Udick, Austin, Texas Hazel Miller, memorial set DeRose Minich DeRose Minich, 79, of Route 208, Knox, died Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 2, 2005, in Beverly Healthcare-Shippenville. The David C. McEntire Funeral Home in Knox is in charge of arrangements. A complete obituary will be published Friday in The Derrick. John A. Ochs John A. Ochs, 86, of Leeper, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2005, in Beverly Healthcare-Shippenville after a short illness. Born Oct. 17, 1918, in Leeper, he was the son of John F. and Mary Schmader Ochs. He was a 1936 graduate of Farmington High School. Mr. Ochs served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was the owner/operator of Leeper Roller Mill in Leeper, retiring after 50 years of service. Mr. Ochs was a charter member of Farmington Township Volunteer Fire Department and was treasurer for 30 years of the Farmington Area Ambulance Service. He was a southpaw pitcher in the Hayrake League. Mr. Ochs enjoyed collecting coins and watching baseball. He was married in Limestone, N.Y., June 22, 1942, to Henrietta Hartle, who died May 20, 1999. Surviving are two daughters and their husbands, Karen and Dick Andre of Leeper and Marilyn and Tom Metzger of Novelty, Ohio; five grandchildren, John, Mike and Chris Andre and Andy and Hollace Metzger; and three great-grandchildren, Veronica, Danielle and David Andre. He also is survived by two brothers, Eugene Ochs of Tylersburg and Hugh Ochs of Ocala, Fla.; and a sister, Joann Vogel of Butler. In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Ochs was preceded in death by four brothers, Cyril Ochs, Arnold Ochs, Raymond Ochs and Robert Ochs; and three sisters, Leone Byerly, Mary Nash and Helen Mealy. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Mary Church, Crown. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday in the church with the Rev. Denny Veltri, pastor, presiding. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The Borland Funeral Home Inc. of Leeper is in charge of arrangements. Plunkett II, 44, formerly of Cooperstown, now of Connecticut, died at 10:22 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, in the Methodist Medical Center, Oak Ridge, Tenn. Among his survivors are his wife Kimberly Lowman; two children, Vanessa and Victor H. Plunkett III, all of Cooperstown; a sister, JoAnn Straub of Franklin; his father, Victor Plunkett of Cooperstown; his mother and brother, Carol and David Plunkett, both of Connecticut. Charles Henry Slye Charles Henry Slye, 87, of 661 Spruce Lane, Venus, died Tuesday evening, Feb. 1, 2005, at his home. Born July 8, 1917, in Venus, he was the son of John E. and Lottie Shaffer Slye, and lived on the family farm where he was born. He was a lifelong resident of the Venus area. He attended Lewis School in Elk Township to the fifth grade, then Pinegrove School to eighth grade and was a 1935 graduate of Knox High School. Mr. Slye worked on the family farm with his parents and brothers; worked as a chauffeur and butler for the Brown family in Oil City; worked at Fryburg Motors; operated the Hillcrest Store for Seigworth Brothers for 19 years; worked several years at Joy Manufacturing; and was associated with the George J. Howe Co. for 15 years. He enjoyed farming and raising sweet corn and parsnips which he shared with friends. Mr. Slye was a member of the Pine City Free Methodist Church. He was married Dec. 19, 1941, to Eunice Kathryn Wingard, who survives. Also surviving are four children, Lita Beck and husband, Victor, of Rockland, Violetta Davis of DuBois, Charles Merritt Slye and wife, Patricia, of Oil City and Iris Jane Delp and husband, Jode R., of Brockway; 15 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He also is survived by a brother, Milo Slye and wife, Patricia, of Irwin; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Slye was preceded in death by five brothers, William Slye, Thomas Slye, Ernest Slye, John Walter "Bus" Slye and an infant, Merle Slye; and an infant sister, Esther. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in the Faller Funeral Home Inc. in Fryburg. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Pine City Free Methodist Church where viewing will be held from 10 a.m. to the time of services. The Rev. William Houben of Clarion, retired Free Methodist minister, and the Rev. Jerri Walford, pastor of the church, will officiate. Interment will be in Venus Cemetery. Ida 'Tootie' Swab Ida "Tootie" Swab, 90, of 588 Mill Road, Franklin, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at her residence. Born July 9, 1914, in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the daughter of Edward W. and Viola Welch Harkinson. She was a 1932 graduate of Rocky Grove High School. Mrs. Swab was a homemaker and a member of the Canal Wesleyan Methodist Church. She was married June 1, 1940, to James Swab, who died June 6, 1996. Surviving are several distant relatives and her church family. Friends may call from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday in the Dickson Family Funeral Home Inc., 123 S. Franklin St., Cochranton. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home with the Rev. Brian Covert, pastor of the Canal Wesleyan Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be in Cochranton Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Canal Wesleyan Methodist Church, Deckards Run Road, Utica, 16362. Michael R. Udick Michael R. Udick, 37, of Austin, Texas, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, in Houston, Texas. He was the son of Frank P. "Skip" Udick and Georgiana Marchinke Udick, who reside in Inverness, Fla. Mr. Udick grew up in Houston and graduated from Sharpstown High School. He later graduated from the University of Texas in Austin where he was a member of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity. He loved hunting, fishing, music, and enjoying great times with his friends. Surviving, in addition to his parents, are three brothers, William Udick and wife, Kim, of Alvin, Texas, Thomas Udick and wife, Debi, of Perryton, Texas, and Stephen Udick and wife, Sharon, of Oil City; two uncles, Randy Marchinke of Oil City and Roger Marchinke of West Palm Beach, Fla.; four nieces; six nephews; and many good friends in the Austin and Houston areas. Mr. Utick was preceded in death by an older brother, Donald J. Udick, in 2001, and by his maternal and paternal grandparents. Services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday in the Scott Funeral Home, Alvin, Texas. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the American Cancer Society. Memorial set for Hazel Miller A memorial service for Hazel Redmond Miller, 82, of 1220 Chestnut St., Franklin, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Hasson Heights Presbyterian Church, Oil City, with the Rev. John Bower officiating. Mrs. Miller died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, in UPMC Northwest, Seneca. She was the mother of Roger Curley of Dublin, Ohio, and sister of Lois A. Green of Franklin.
