Bauer, 98, of Lucinda, died early Thursday morning, Feb. 10, 2005, in Clarion Hospital after a short illness. Born April 29, 1906, in Snydersburg, she was the daughter of Joseph and Anna Wolbert Griebel. Mrs. Bauer attended St. Joseph School in Lucinda. She was a member of St. Joseph Church in Lucinda and the Rosary Society of the church. Mrs. Bauer was a homemaker and enjoyed sewing and making quilts. She also baked and decorated wedding cakes for many years. She was married in St. Mary Catholic Church, Akron, Ohio, July 2, 1929, to Edward Bauer, who died Oct. 16, 1997. Surviving are three sons and their wives, Norbert and Marie Bauer of Marble and Stanley and Rose Bauer and James and Marge Bauer, all of Lucinda; two daughters, Jean Bauer and Virginia Baumcratz, both of Lucinda; 12 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. She also is survived by a sister, Mrs. Agnes Snearline of Country Springs in Sligo; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Bauer was preceded in death by three brothers, Lawrence Griebel, Maurice Griebel and Thomas Griebel; two sisters, Mrs. Susan Hanes and Mrs. Barbara Troup; and a son-in-law, James Baumcratz. The family suggests memorials be made to St. Joseph School in Lucinda. Homer J. Bish Homer J. Bish, 83, of Distant, died Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 9, 2005, in the Armstrong County Memorial Hospital. Born Sept. 5, 1921, in Timblin, he was the son of Charles and Mertie Rhodes Bish. Mr. Bish worked as a heavy equipment operator for various coal companies in the area. He was a member of the Springside Baptist Church in New Bethlehem. Mr. Bish was married Nov. 24, 1960, to O. Jean Shindledecker, who died June 23, 1996. Surviving are one daughter, Cathy J. Truitt and husband, Gary, of Kittanning; three stepdaughters, Teresa Reddinger and husband, Dennis, and Toni Hetrick, all of Distant, and Sally Fitzsimmons and husband, Jim "Buck," of Ringgold; one stepson, William Hetrick and wife, Sandy, of Distant; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He also is survived by one brother, Merle Bish of New Bethlehem; and two sisters, Lula Bish of Indiana and Geraldine Buzzard of Shelocta. In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Bish was preceded in death by three brothers, Bernard Bish, Malcolm Bish and Paul Bish; and one sister, Martha Robinson. Thomas William Frantz Thomas William Frantz, 54, of 542 Plummer St., Oil City, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005, in his home. Born May 30, 1950, in Oil City, he was the son of William C. and Myrna E. Farrell Frantz. Mr. Frantz was a graduate of Oil City High School and had lived in the Oil City area all of his life. He served in the Army in Vietnam, attaining the rank of SP4. Mr. Frantz was employed for a number of years in the stock room at the Oil City Giant Eagle. He previously worked at Foster Forbes Glass until its closing. He enjoyed walking, riding his bicycle and fishing. Surviving are a son, Thomas W. Frantz Jr. of Meadville; three sisters, Nancy Hollenbaugh and husband, Norman, of Lockport, N.Y., Judith Meehan of Oil City and Anna Marie Frantz of Polk; four brothers, David Frantz and Ronald Frantz, both of Oil City, Frank Frantz of Seneca and Raymond Frantz of Titusville; and several nieces and nephews. Interment will be in Grove Hill Cemetery. G. LaRue Bennett Smith G. LaRue Bennett Smith, 93, of Franklin, formerly of Cochranton, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005, in The Caring Place, Franklin. Born Aug. 2, 1911, in Montgomery Township, Indiana County, she was the daughter of Jerome and Elverta Rairigh Bennett. Mrs. Smith was a member of the Canal Wesleyan Methodist Church in Utica for more than 60 years. She had been active with the Women's Missionary Society of the church, completing a great deal of quilting and needlework projects for overseas missions. She also served as a Sunday School teacher and part-time pianist and also was a vocalist. She was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening and tending to her lawn. Mrs. Smith was married Dec. 28, 1935, to W. Rex Smith, who died in 1988. Surviving are two children, Lyle Smith of Cochranton and Rhetta Cummins and husband, Joseph of Waynesboro, Va.; a daughter-in-law, Wanda Thompson of Pittsburgh; six grandchildren, Kevin Smith and wife, Diane; Kimberli Hart; Jerome Smith and wife, Holly; Virginia Foxton and husband, Mark; Gregory Long and wife, Tina,; and Shayne Long and wife, Heather; and five great-grandchildren. She also is survived by a sister-in-law, Florence Bennett of Union City. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by a son, Regnald Smith; four brothers, Reed, Albert, Daniel and Everett Bennett; and four sisters, Viola Coalmer, Laura Johnson, Veda Trimble and Margaret Huey. Charlotte Snyder Charlotte Snyder, 77, of 423 Moreland Drive, Franklin, died at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, in UPMC Northwest, Seneca. Born Nov. 7, 1927, in Oil City, she was the daughter of Robert H. and Edith Prichard Gharing. She attended Lamey and Oakland Township School in Dempseytown and graduated in 1946 from Oil City High School. Mrs. Snyder worked as a secretary in the guardian office at Polk Center, retiring in 1985. She also worked in the Register and Recorders Office in the Venango County Courthouse. She also worked for a short time for Attorneys Wasson & Egan. She served as treasurer for Polk Center when luncheons were held there. Mrs. Snyder was a member of the Oak Hill United Methodist Church where she was treasurer for many years. She volunteered for the Venango County VNA and helped her husband deliver Meals on Wheels. Mrs. Snyder enjoyed gardening for several years at the Gharing family farm and always enjoyed her flower gardens and caring for the lawn. She was married Sept. 15, 1951, to Donald R. Snyder, who survives. Also surviving are a brother and his wife, William P. and Bette Gharing of Oil City; a sister, Evelyn Larson of Green Valley, Ariz.; a sister-in-law, Helen Lepley of Franklin; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Snyder was preceded in death by a brother, R. Wendell Gharing; a sister-in-law, Florence Bunce; and a brother-in-law, George Snyder. "Umpy" Umstead Jr., 82, of Kaneville, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, in UPMC Northwest, Seneca. Born Aug. 17, 1922, in Franklin, he was the son of Marvin R. Umstead Sr. and Mahalia Whitman Umstead. He served in the U.S. Army from Dec. 5, 1942, to Oct. 13, 1945, as a staff sergeant and squad leader with Company K, 349th Infantry. He served in the battles of Rome-Amo Po Valley and North Apennines. He received the Good Conduct Medal, EAMA Service Ribbon and three Bronze Service Stars, Silver Star Medal and a Purple Heart. Mr. Umstead worked as a mechanic for Pennzoil Co. for 37 years, retiring in 1986. He was a past commander of the American Legion Post No. 387 of Rouseville and then it merged with the James E. Henderson American Legion Post No. 32 of Oil City. Mr. Umstead was a member of the Polar Bear Association of World War II veterans. He enjoyed listening to America Folk, Blue Grass and fiddle music, writing poetry, dealing in antiques, working around the house and spending time with family and friends. Mr. Umstead was married in Franklin May 9, 1946, to Thelma P. Orr, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Dennis Umstead and wife, Sylvia, of New Castle and Daniel Umstead and wife, Lyubov, of Magnolia, Del.; three daughters, Elaine Renninger and husband, Jim, of Conneautville, Ohio, Laura LaVan and husband, Allan, of Oil City and Amanda A. McMunn and husband, Tom, of Titusville; 17 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. He also is survived by a brother, Donald W. "Bill" Umstead of Oil City; a sister, Dorothy Faye and husband, Milford, of Saint Ignace, Mich.; several nieces and nephews; and his extended family of the third floor staff of the Oil City Presbyterian Home. In addition to his parents, Mr. Umstead was preceded in death by a son, Daryl Umstead; a daughter, Irene Umstead; and a brother, Paul E. Umstead. Jeffrey Mark 'Possom' Williams Jeffrey Mark "Possom" Williams, 44, of Washington, Pa., Chartiers Township, formerly of Oil City, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, in his home. Born Dec. 16, 1960, in Oil City, he was the son of Larry and Susanne Graham Williams of Houston, Pa., formerly of Oil City. He was a 1979 graduate of Chartiers-Houston High School. Mr. Williams was a welder for Amwell Machine & Fabrication, Washington, Pa., He formerly worked for Lincoln Hydraulics, Meadowlands and DBT of Houston. He attended the First Baptist Church in Canonsburg. Mr. Williams was a member of the Arden Sportsmen's Club and enjoyed riding motorcycles. Surviving, in addition to his parents, are a sister, Lori Williams Yannuzzi and husband, Jeff, of Gibsonia; two nieces, Erin Kisko and Lauren Colussi,; a great-nephew, Dakota; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Young, 86, of Parker, Washington Township, Butler County, died Wednesday evening, Feb. 9, 2005, in Trumbull Memorial Hospital, Warren, Ohio, after an illness. Born March 23, 1918, in Annisville, Butler County, she was the daughter of George and Marie Robb Young. Mrs. Young was a foster grandparent with the Head Start Program of Butler County, working in both Butler and the Moniteau program in Boyers. She frequently attended the Grace Baptist Church in Warren, Ohio. Mrs. Young was married to Lee E. Young, who died March 27, 1976. Surviving are two daughters, Connie Emery of Warren, Ohio, and Ethel Slaughenhaupt of Petrolia; two sons, Gary Young of Hilliards (Ridgeville) and Donald E. Young of Parker, Washington Township; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Young was the last surviving member of her immediate family. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters and five brothers.
