The Derrick, May 6, 2005: John Daniel Berlin, Knight Town Road, Shippenville Margaret R. Berrett, 3678 Georgetown Road, Polk Thelma B. Daugherty, Franklin, formerly of Old Route 8, Polk Dorothy Maxton, Leeper William D. "Billy" McLendon, Lamartine John Daniel Berlin John Daniel Berlin, 78, of Knight Town Road, Shippenville, died at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 4, 2005, at his residence following a lengthy illness. Born Oct. 26, 1926, in Elk Township, Clarion County, he was the son of George W. and Elizabeth L. Botts Berlin. He was a 1944 graduate of Shippenville High School. Mr. Berlin then joined the U.S. Navy where he served until his retirement in 1967. During his tours of duty, he saw action in World War II and the Korean War, serving aboard the USS Philadelphia, USS Norfolk, USS Dewey and the USS Manchester. At the time of his retirement, he was senior chief fire control technician for the ship's missile systems. He received the following commendations: World War II Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle East Medal, China Service Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal with Asia clasp, Korean Service Medal with three stars, United Nations Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Cuba), National Defense Medal with Bronze Star and Combat Action Medal. Following his Navy retirement, Mr. Berlin worked for 15 years for the Civil Service in missile systems at Fort Hueneme, Calif. He again retired and move back to his beloved Pennsylvania in 1982, settling near Shippenville. Mr. Berlin became involved in many area charities and organizations. He was a lifelong member of Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Shippenville where he served on the church council and was always available for any work that was needed at the church. He was a member of the Knox Lions Club, served as past King Lion, chaired the membership committee and chaired the eye screening program at local schools. In recognition of his service to the Lions, he was awarded the "Melvin Jones" Award which is the highest award in Lionism. Mr. Berlin was involved for many years in the Grange where he held several district offices. He originally was with Prosperity Grange near Shippenville before transferring to Murphy Grange near Sligo. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and belonged to Edenburg Lodge No. 550, F. & A.M. in Knox. Mr. Berlin served on the board of directors for the Knox Library and as a trustee, represented both the Lions Club and Elks Township with that organization. He enjoyed gardening, mowing his lawn and sewing, donating many articles to various charities. He also enjoyed watching and feeding the many birds and animals that came to his back yard. Surviving are two sisters, Anna C. Ekis of Shippenville and Helen L. Parker of Clarion; two brothers, Jacob L. Berlin of Shawneetown, Ill., and Floyd W. Berlin of Gainesville, Va.; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, all of whom referred to him lovingly as "Uncle John." In addition to his parents, Mr. Berlin was preceded in death by a brother, Frederick A. Berlin; and his beloved dog, "Rusty." The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the David C. McEntire Funeral Home, 504 E. Penn St., Knox. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home with the Rev. Gary Hilfiger, pastor of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Shippenville, officiating. Interment, with full military honors accorded by the Berlin-Bowser American Legion Post of Knox, will follow in Cedarview Memorial Park near Strattanville. The family suggests memorials be made to the Clarion County Humane Society, Route 322 West, Shippenville, 16254, or to the Clarion-Forest VNA Hospice Program, P.O. Box 668, Knox, 16232. Margaret R. Berrett Margaret R. Berrett, 80, of 3678 Georgetown Road, Polk, died at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 3, 2005, in The Caring Place, Franklin. Born June 10, 1924, in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of Anton and Mary Niehl Ribic. Mrs. Berrett retired as a clerk in the shipping department at Westinghouse. She attended St. Patrick Catholic Church. Mrs. Berrett enjoyed gardening, sewing and crocheting. She was married Oct. 14, 1959, to George Berrett, who died June 23, 2002. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Martin (Jeanne) Saban of Lake Tapawingo, Mo., and Mrs. Ken (Esther) Tweede of Independence, Mo.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She also is survived by a sister, Catherine Galket of North Huntingdon; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Berrett was preceded in death by one brother, Tony Ribic; and two sisters, Marie McCracken and Ann Yenchi. Services will be held in St. Patrick Church at a date to be announced. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorials may be made to St. Patrick Church. The Robert W. Daugherty, 96, of Sugar Creek Station, Franklin, formerly of Old Route 8, Polk, died at 12:20 p.m. Thursday, May 5, 2005. Born Dec. 1, 1908, in Victory Township, she was the daughter of Byron and Lizzie Hovis Blair. She was a graduate of Rouseville High School. Mrs. Daugherty was a homemaker. She was married to Elton "Ace" Daugherty, who died June 14, 1978. Surviving are a niece and her husband, Thelma and Bruce Brooks of Old Route 8, with whom she lived for three years prior to residing at Sugar Creek Station. Also surviving are several other nieces and great-nieces and great-nephews; and one sister, Vera Rowand of Florida. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Daugherty was preceded in death by one sister, Cleone Cross; and two brothers, Carl Blair and Clair "Pete" Blair. There will be no visitation.
