The Derrick, May 25, 2005: Getting it right Mary Kulinski Szalewicz - Mary Kulinski Szalewicz, 86, of Vo-Tech Drive, Oil City, died at 6:06 a.m. Monday, May 23, 2005, in UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh. Among those preceding her in death was a sister, Valeria Reinke. Memorials may be made to Family House, 233 McKee Place, Pittsbrgh, 152133. The Derrick, May 26, 2005: Martha A. McMurdy Martha A. McMurdy, 79, of Oil City, died Tuesday, May 24, 2005, at her residence. Born April 20, 1926, in Eau Claire, Butler County, she was the daughter of Howard and Gladys Rihel. Mrs. McMurdy attended the Calvary United Methodist Church in Oil City. She was a homemaker and loved to spend time with her family and friends. Mrs. McMurdy enjoyed completing crossword puzzles, tending to her plants and flowers, embroidery, and volunteering in various capacities at the church. She was married in Butler Jan. 3, 1946, to Eugene McMurdy, who preceded her in death in 1976. Surviving are two daughters, Jeanie Umstead of Seneca and Gladys Sweeney and husband, Robert, of Seneca; two sons, Joseph McMurdy and wife, June, of Seneca, and Alan McMurdy and wife, Gayle, also of Seneca; 12 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren. She also is survived by a brother, Lawrence Rihel and wife, Vi, of Butler; a special friend, Mary Rybak of Oil City; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Chuck Umstead, in 2000; her daughter, Sandra Emanuele in 2002; her son, Thomas F. McMurdy in 2004; and seven brothers. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Hile-Best Funeral Home, 2781 Route 257 in Seneca, Cranberry Township. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the funeral home with the Rev. John Emigh, pastor of Calvary United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will follow in Brandon Cemetery, Cranberry Township, Venango County. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.
