    3. The Derrick, May 27, 2005: Donald L. Brown, Franklin Jean Mateer Evans-Mihaly, California, formerly of New Bethlehem Chester Earl Newell, Oil City, formerly of Dempseytown John C. Stewart Jr., Franklin Donald L. Brown Donald L. Brown, 74, of 267 Sugarcreek Drive, Franklin, died at 4:25 a.m. Thursday, May 26, 2005, in North Harmony, N.Y. Born June 17, 1930, in Franklin, he was the son of Frank A. Brown and Gertrude White. Mr. Brown was the retired owner of Bonanza restaurant in Franklin. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, having served in the Korean War. Mr. Brown was a life member of Franklin BPOE Elks Lodge No. 110, past governor and a lifetime member of Franklin Moose Lodge No. 83 and a lifetime member of Legion of Moose Lodge No. 88. He also was a member of the Franklin Eagles Aire No. 328; VFW Post No. 1835; Lakewood Rod and Gun Club; and American Legion Post No. 0476. Mr. Brown enjoyed fishing, cutting wood and boating. Surviving are a son, Donald James Brown and wife, Connie, of Franklin; two grandchildren, Jessica Brown and Jared Brown, both of Franklin; three sisters, Alice Marie Proper of Salem, W.Va., Connie Latchaw and husband, Raymond, of Franklin, and Betty Judy and husband, Bill, of Gray, Tenn.; and his fiancee, Pat Hays, of Franklin. Mr. Brown was preceded in death by his parents and infant daughter. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday in the Robert W. Gardinier Funeral Home Inc., Franklin. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home with the Rev. Ronald C. Bole, VNA Hospice pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in Franklin Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society and/or the Elks National Foundation, 2750 Lakeview Ave., Chicago, Ill., 60614. Jean Mateer Evans-Mihaly Jean Mateer Evans-Mihaly, 93, of Sacramento, Calif., died Monday, Dec. 7, 2004, in Sacramento. Born Feb. 10, 1912, in Pittsburgh, she was a former New Bethlehem resident. Mrs. Mihaly graduated from Allegheny Teachers College and taught school until 1941. She was an avid gardener and bird watcher. Mrs. Mihaly enjoyed dancing to big band music, and she loved spending time with her family and friends. She was married in 1941 to Thomas Evans in Buffalo, N.Y. He preceded her in death in 1973, at which time she moved to California to be with her daughters. She was married in 1983 to Albert Mihaly of Santa Rosa, Calif. He preceded her in death in 2002. Surviving are two daughters, Ann Burroughs and husband, Robert, of Ferndale, Calif., and Ellie Evans of Sacramento, Calif.; a granddaughter, Amelia Burroughs of San Diego, Calif.; and two grandsons, Thomas Burroughs of Arcata, Calif., and Andrew Oesterreicher of Sacramento, Calif. Also surviving is a brother, Joseph Mateer of Middleton. A graveside memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday in New Bethlehem Cemetery with the Rev. Richard Hartsfield, pastor of New Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, officiating. The family suggests memorial contributions be made in Mrs. Mihaly's name to the Madrone Audubon Society, P.O. Box 1911, Santa Rosa, Calif., 95402. The Bish Memorial Funeral Home, 206 South St., New Bethlehem, is in charge of arrangements. Chester Earl Newell Chester Earl Newell, 87, of Oil City, formerly of Dempseytown, died at 9:35 p.m. Wednesday, May 25, 2005, at Beverly Healthcare-Oil City. Born Oct. 18, 1917, in Blue Jay, W.Va., he was a son of John W. and Jennie Mahood Newell. In his youth, Mr. Newell was actively involved in the Oil City Salvation Army, becoming a skilled musician at only 11 years old while playing in the adult band. His musical talents were further developed through the years as he also became a skilled organist, much to the delight of those for whom he played. He worked at Oilwell Supply division of U.S. Steel in Oil City as a heat treater and toolmaker, retiring in 1979 after 37 years. Mr. Newell also ran his own radio and television repair business while residing in the Dempseytown area. His hobbies and interests were many, including music, hunting, woodworking, gardening, bowling and amateur radio. Mr. Newell had been active with and held various in the Oakland Volunteer Fire Department and fire police. He also had been an active member of the Oakland senior center. During his retirement years, he and his wife spent winters in Florida. He was married April 30, 1940, to the former Lena Moore, who preceded him in death October 2004. Surviving are two sons, Darrell Newell and wife, Katie, and their daughter, Darlene, all of Cooperstown, and Ronald Newell and wife, Judy, of Greencastle, and their children, Lisa and husband, Rob, with their children, Brody and Lilly of Chambersburg, and Brian and wife, Amy, and daughter, Emma, of Mercersburg, and Todd of Greencastle; and two brothers, Clayton Newell and wife, Kathryn, of Greenpond, N.J., and Harry Newell, of Nanuet, N.Y. In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Newell was preceded in death by three sisters, Jennie, Orpha and Mildred; and five brothers, William, John, David, Alonzo and Elmer. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Morrison Funeral Home, Oil City. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home. Interment will follow in Dempseytown Lutheran Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Oil City Salvation Army band department. John C. Stewart Jr. John C. Stewart Jr., 78, of 315 Sugarcreek Drive, Franklin, died Thursday, May 26, 2005, at his residence. Born April 26, 1927, in Butler, he was a son of the late John C. Sr., and Freda Fisher Stewart. Mr. Stewart was a graduate of Franklin High School. During his working career, he worked at the U.S. Post Office, Joy Manufacturing Company, Socony-Mobil, Systematics and Chicago Pneumatic Tool Company where he worked as a millwright. While employed at the Chicago Pneumatic Tool Company, he was a member of the machinist's union where he had formerly served as steward. Mr. Stewart has served his country proudly with the U.S. Navy during World War II, having spent two years in the South Pacific. He was among the first Americans to enter into Japan at the end of the war. During the late 1950s, he was the former owner and operator of the Sugarcreek Village Water Company. Mr. Stewart was a member of the First Baptist Church in Franklin for more than 50 years where he served as a deacon. He enjoyed gardening and working in the outdoors. Mr. Stewart was always ready to lend a helping hand to his family and many friends. He will be remembered for his droll sense of humor. He was married Feb. 25, 1950, in the First Baptist Church to the former BettyLou Smith, who survives. In addition to his wife of 55 years, Mr. Stewart is survived by two sons, Randy and wife, Susan, of Franklin, and Thomas and wife, Diane, of Cranberry Township, Butler County; and a son-in-law, Gene Homan of Ashville, N.Y. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Siusanne and husband, Gene, and Michael, Timothy, Caitlin, Ann and Chad; two step-grandchildren, Matthew and Christopher; one great-grandson, Samuel; three brothers, George and wife, Mary, of Franklin, Edward of Oil City and Robert of Jersey City, N.J.; and one sister, Patricia McSparren of Franklin. In addition to his parents, Mr. Stewart was preceded in death by his daughter, Melissa Homan, who died Feb. 3, 2003. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday in the Timothy E. Hartle Funeral Home, 1328 Elk St., Franklin. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home with Dr. Eddie M. Rape, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Franklin, officiating. Interment will follow in Rockland Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Visiting Nurse's Association of Venango County, 176 E. Bissell Ave., Oil City, 16301.
