Thomas, Conneaut Lake Robert Lee Vasbinder, 9048 Route 68, Rimersburg J. Louise Yoder, Maple Grove, Rimersburg Ronald E. 'Sonny' Buck Ronald E. "Sonny" Buck, 73, formerly of Franklin, died at 5:15 a.m. Saturday, May 14, 2005, in the Oil City Presbyterian Home. Born Oct. 10, 1931, in Sugarcreek, he was the son of Rollin E. and Mary Applegate Buck. Mr. Buck was a graduate of Rocky Grove High School and Clarion College. He was an outstanding athlete and was a member of the 1949 Rocky Grove High School District 10 champion basketball team. He was an integral member of the 1951-52 Clarion basketball team that had a record of 21-1, losing to the University of Utah in the National Tournament at Kansas City and was named the "Small College Team of the Year." A sports enthusiast, Mr. Buck played several years on softball and fast-pitch softball teams competing in Pennsylvania, New York and Ohio. He was well-known as an official in basketball, baseball, football and softball. He had served as president of the Tri-County Basketball Officials Chapter. Mr. Buck enjoyed baseball and was a die-hard Dodgers fan. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the U.S. Army in Korea and saw action in Mak Tong, North Korea. Mr. Buck began his working career as a bread man for Tip Top Bakery, then worked at Joy for a time before becoming a salesman for Bohlender John's, which later became Spauldings. He retired in 1991. He was a former member of the Eagles and Elks. Mr. Buck was married Sept. 1, 1956, to the former Mary Ann Harris, who died Sept. 7, 1992. Surviving are a son, Ronald E. Buck Jr. and wife, Tammy, of Franklin; two grandchildren, William Buck of Misenheimer, N.C., and Rachel Buck, a student at Columbia College, Chicago, Ill.; his companion, Sally Zinz of Oil City; and two sisters, Lois Hedglin and husband, Jim, of Johnstown and Patricia Conlon and husband, Lee, of Neptune, N.J. Also surviving are three sisters-in-law, Sally Marshall and Helen Sharp of Franklin and Diane Boal of Polk; four brothers-in-law, Lt. Col. George Harris of Ozark, Ala., John Harris of Rimersburg, Mike Harris of Lindenwald, N.J., and Bill Harris of Orlando, Fla., and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Buck was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Grimm. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today in the Huff Chapel, 312 W. Park St., Franklin. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home with the Rev. David Parker, pastor of Grace United Methodist Church, Rocky Grove, officiating. Gloria Burns Gloria Burns, 75, of Sligo, died Sunday morning, May 15, 2005, in Clarion Hospital. The Varner Funeral Home in Sligo is in charge of arrangements. Anna Louise Cravenor Anna Louise Cravenor, 99, of Main Street, Rimersburg, died at 2:10 p.m. Friday, May 13, 2005, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jean Smith, in New Bethlehem. Born March 31, 1906, in Templeton, she was the daughter of Francis V. and Elizabeth Mary Butler Lorenz. She attended the Rimer Hill School to the eighth grade. Mrs. Cravenor had been employed at Meredith's Store in Widnoon and then was the caretaker for Mrs. T.T. Meredith until her death. She was a member of St. Richard Roman Catholic Church of Rimersburg and the Rosary Society of the church. She was a former member of the Pocahontas Lodge of Armstrong County. Mrs. Cravenor was married in Wheeling, W.Va., Jan. 21, 1925, to Albert Harrison Cravenor, who died Dec. 19, 1968. Surviving are two daughters, Bernadine R. Stephens of Rimersburg and Jean Smith and husband, William, of New Bethlehem; seven grandchildren, Penney Coradi and husband, William, Sherry Billman and Charles Billman Jr., all of Rimersburg, Michael Stephens and wife, Frances, of Kyle, Texas, Michelle McCanna of Marshfield, Wis., Mary Ann Fye and husband, Randy, of Smith's Station, Ala., and Jeffrey Billman and wife, Dorothy, of Aliquippa; 11 great-grandchildren, Billie Coradi, Patrick Coradi and Jessica Billman, all of Rimersburg, Aaron Stephens and wife, Holly, of Kyle, Texas, Ian Stephens and wife, Christin, of Freeport, La., Corey Fye of Smith's Station, Ala., Jason Billman of Oil City, Christopher McCanna of LaCrosse, Wis., Nicholas McCanna of Plover, Wis., and Edwin Billman and Marcus Billman, both of Aliquippa; three great-great-grandchildren, Rainha Stephens of Kyle, Texas, Hailey McCanna of Plover, Texas, and Dennis Stephens of Freeport, La.; six stepgrandchildren, William Smith and wife, Lana, of New Bethlehem, Joyce Silagyi and husband, Bruce of Worthington, John Smith and friend, Connie Chapman, of Knox, Christina Adams and husband, James, of Clarion, Barbara Crissman and husband, Stanley, of Mayport and Linda Matey and husband, Wayne, of Richmond, Va.; and nine step-great-grandchildren, Kattie, Sarah and Audrey Crissman of Mayport, Leann, Holly, Andrew, Patty and Josh Smith, all of New Bethlehem, and Christopher Salvadori with the U.S. Navy, Norfolk, Va. She also is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Ida Boefinger of Venice, Fla., and Mrs. Frances M. Geer of New Castle; and a number of nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death was her father, Dec. 22, 1949; her mother, Dec. 24, 1973; a son-in-law, Patrick R. Stephens, Nov. 24, 1993; a great-granddaughter, Gretchen Coradi, Aug. 31, 1982; a step-great-grandson, David Smith, January 1988; one brother, Leonard Lorenz, Jan. 10, 1982; and three sisters, Martha Bish, July 8, 2001, Estella Worthern, Jan. 29, 2001, and Eva Beers, June 15, 1971. Thomas James Dolphin Thomas James Dolphin, 78, of Gibsonia, formerly of Oil City, died Saturday, May 14, 2005. Born Feb. 5, 1927, in Oil City, he was the son of John Thomas and Germaine Lynam Dolphin. He was a graduate of St. Joseph High School, Oil City, Gannon University, Rensselaer and SUNY, Buffalo. Mr. Dolphin was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving during World War II. He had been an electrical engineer for Westinghouse for more than 40 years. He invented and patented several steel-making processes. Mr. Dolphin was a devout Catholic and was an avid golfer and skier. He was married for 54 years to the former Jean Layden, who survives. Also surviving are three children, John Thomas Dolphin and wife, Louanne, of Butler, James Andrew Dolphin of Gibsonia and Anne Dolphin Sheridan and husband, Kevin, of Winsted, Conn.; and four grandchildren, Christopher Dolphin, Hannah, Cara and Kyle Sheridan. He also is survived by two sisters, Mary Dolphin and Margaret Dolphin Klosinski, both of Oil City. In addition to his parents, Mr. Dolphin was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Marie Dolphin; and a brother, John "Jack" Dolphin. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the H.P. Edward Walter Homer Edward Walter Homer, 84, of 322 Union St., Titusville, died at 6:30 a.m. Sunday, May 15, 2005, in the Titusville Area Hospital. Born Jan. 24, 1921, in Titusville, he was the son of Walter E. and Gertrude Ida Sweetland Homer. He was a 1939 graduate of Colestock High School, Titusville. Mr. Homer enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force Jan. 6, 1942, in Pittsburgh. He served as link trainer instructor until Nov. 29, 1945, when he was honorably discharged at Patterson Field, Ohio, with the rank of staff sergeant. A lifelong resident of the Titusville area, he was a member of St. Walburga Catholic Church, Titusville, where he served on Parish Council for several years. He also served as eucharistic minister at St. Anthony Church in Tionesta and St. Walburga Church. He was a member of Cleo J. Ross American Legion Post No. 368. Mr. Homer worked as a machinist at Universal Cyclops Specialty Steel Corp. for 16 years and owned and operated Ed's Cabinet Shop in Neilltown for 29 years. A skilled craftsman, he was very instrumental in the early development of Homer Wood Hardwood Floors and assisted in the renovation of St. Walburga and St. Titus churches and St. Thomas More Center in Cranberry. He was an avid bowler, golfer, pool player, TV sports fan and joke teller. He loved telling family stories and playing his own handcrafted guitar. He was a man of honor and integrity. Mr. Homer was married in Kansas City, Mo., Jan. 19, 1945, to the former Rita Ruot, who survives. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this year. Also surviving are a son, John M. Homer and wife, Dr. Marcie Wethlie Homer of Titusville; three daughters, Lorraine K. Baker and husband, Brian, of Titusville, Denise J. Goodwin and husband, Michael, of Blooming Glen and Michelle L. Fitzgerald and husband, Ray, of Brookville; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He also is survived by a sister, Edna M. Cardullo of Erie; a brother-in-law, Joseph Ruot and wife, Ruth, of Titusville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, Mr. Homer was preceded in death by two sisters, Katherine Ross, who resided in Colchester, Mass., and Elizabeth "Betty' Smith, who resided in Salem, Ohio; and four brothers-in-law, Homer Ross, James Smith, Francis H. Ruot and Charles Ruot. Relatives and friends will be received in the gathering space at St. Walburga Church from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today. A Christian wake service will be held at 3:45 p.m. today in the church. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the church with the Rev. D.G. Davis, pastor, presiding. Interment will be in St. Walburga Cemetery with full military burial rites. Mary Theresa Maj Moran Mary Theresa Maj Moran, 75, of Oil City, died Saturday, May 14, 2005, at her home following a 13-year courageous battle with cancer and every day she lived strong. Born Jan. 18, 1930, in Oil City, she was one of eight children born to Stanley and Sophie Kutyla Maj. She was a 1948 graduate of Oil City High School. Mrs. Moran held various jobs prior to marrying Frank Joseph Moran Aug. 15, 1948, and raising a family of seven children. Her life centered around family and church. She was always concerned with the well being of others and her heart and home were always open. She was an active member of the Assumption B.V.M. Catholic Church and the Rosary Society of the church. Mrs. Moran enjoyed traveling and visiting her children and grandchildren. Surviving are her husband, Frank Moran, of 56 years; six children, Francis A. Moran of Oil City, Dianne Moran Evripidou and husband, Aristotelis, of Chandler, Ariz., Susan Moran and Mary Ann Moran, both of Chandler, Ariz., Jon Moran and wife, Kristen, of Louisville, Ky., and Daniel Moran and wife, Nichelle, of Pittsburgh; seven grandchildren, Rebecca Moran of Peoria, Ill., Jessica Moran Streczywilk of Franklin, Alex Moran of Gilbert, Ariz., Nikolas, Christopher and Michael Evripidou of Chandler, Ariz., and Alexis Rose Moran of Pittsburgh; and two great-grandchildren. She also is survived by a brother, John Maj of New Castle, Del.; four sisters, Lottie Hajec of Corry, Stella Szabat, Frannie Garbacz and Helen Mansfield, all of Oil City; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Carl J. Moran; a brother, Edward May; and her sister, Cecelia Maj Guy. Elizabeth Lucille Swarm Perry Elizabeth Lucille Swarm Perry, 87, of Waynesburg, formerly of Clarion County, died at 11:40 a.m. Friday, May 13, 2005, in Washington Hospital, Washington, Pa. Born May 28, 1917, in Sligo, she was the daughter of Wayne and Bernice Morris Swarm. Mrs. Perry attended the Oak View United Methodist Church. She was a caregiver for her son, Butch, for 17 years. Mrs. Perry was married Nov. 18, 1942, to Joseph F. Perry, who died April 27, 1977. She and her husband owned and operated several small grocery stores in and around Clarion County. She also was a cashier at the former 76 Truck Stop in Clarion. Mrs. Perry loved reading, crocheting and doing crafts. Surviving are a daughter and husband, Frances and Jerry Hardy of Waynesburg; two granddaughters, Rebecca Hardy and Stephanie Hardy; and a stepbrother and wife, Roy and Mary Hile of Sligo. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Perry was preceded in death by a son, Thomas "Butch" Perry; a stepsister, Virginia Yates; and her grandparents, Tom and Vera Hile, who adopted her and raised her upon the death of her mother. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Interment will be in Clarion Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Eccles-Lesher Library in Rimersburg. Thomas, 70, of 12090 Midway Drive, Conneaut Lake, died at 11:03 p.m. Friday, May 13, 2005, in Sugar Creek Station, Franklin. Born June 16, 1935, in DuBois, she was the daughter of James and Helen Kriner Anderson. Mrs. Thomas was a secretary for Diner's Delight Inc. and also was a bookkeeper for Shear Expressions. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Franklin. She was a youth counselor for the United Methodist Youth Fellowship and sang in the church choir. Mrs. Thomas was a member of the Conneaut Lake Red Hat Society. She enjoyed traveling, golf, playing cards and music, especially the piano. Mrs. Thomas was married Oct. 28, 1956, to John L. "Sharkey" Thomas, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Lynanne R. Gardinier and husband, Michael, of Franklin and Nancy T. Smith and husband, Blaise, of Franklin; and five grandchildren, Ryan C. Gardinier, Kyle T. Gardinier, Macy N. Smith, Spencer B. Smith and Dexter G. Smith, all of Franklin. She also is survived by a sister, Judith Myers and husband, Terry, of Hermitage; a sister-in-law, Marcy Anderson of Columbus, Ohio; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. Robert Lee Vasbinder Robert Lee Vasbinder, 79, of 9048 Route 68, Rimersburg, died at 9:25 p.m. Friday, May 13, 2005, in Clarion Hospital. Born Jan. 29, 1926, in the Village of Rimerton, Armstrong County, he was the son of Charles and Mildred Butler Vasbinder. Mr. Vasbinder was employed for 25 years by Conrail and for many years worked at the Sligo tipple for C&K Coal Co. He was a Protestant, an avid sports fan and enjoyed gardening. Surviving are five sons, Garry Vasbinder, Dick Vasbinder and wife, Karen, Don Vasbinder and wife, Sherry, and Jerry Vasbinder, all of Rimersburg, and Chuck Vasbinder and wife, Jodi, of Widnoon; seven grandchildren, Zachary, Alison, Cory Tyler, Christina, Mellissa and Tori; and two great-grandchildren. He also is survived by one sister, Betty Watson of Elkhart, Ind.; and two brothers, Jesse Vasbinder of Rimersburg and Hank Vasbinder of Cowansville. In addition to his parents, Mr. Vasbinder was preceded in death by a brother, Richard "Fluke" Vasbinder; a sister, Caroline Smail; and a granddaughter, Kara Vasbinder. Louise Yoder, 82, of 31 Bell Road, Maple Grove, Rimersburg, died Sunday morning, May 15, 2005, in the Intensive Care Unit of Hamot Medical Center, Erie. Born Jan. 24, 1923, in Madison Township, Clarion County, she was the daughter of James and Barbara Sample Watterson. Mrs. Yoder was retired from the Davis Cookie Co. of Rimersburg. She attended the New Athens Church of God of Prophecy near Rimersburg. Mrs. Yoder was married Nov. 6, 1941, to Archie M. Yoder, who died May 25, 1978. Surviving are two daughters, Nancy L. McNaughton of West Bend, Wis., and Jill A. Hibell of Fairview; two sons, James L. "Jobe" Yoder of Rimersburg and John W. Yoder Sr. and wife, Carole, of Parker; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. She also is survived by four sisters, Betty Slaugenhaupt and Margie Zitzman, both of Saxonburg, and Bessie Henry and Peggy Schons, both of Rimersburg. She also is survived by one brother, Donald E. Watterson of North Berwick, Maine. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Yoder was preceded in death by three sisters, Billie Henry, Kathryn Darden and an infant, Enid; and six brothers, Charles, David, Guy, Jerry, Joe and Mark Watterson. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the Varner Funeral Home of Rimersburg. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home with the Rev. Leonard Goughler, pastor of the New Athens Church of God of Prophecy, officiating. Interment will follow in the Rimersburg Cemetery.
