"Hun" Brown, 351 Causeway Drive, Franklin Phyllis Carter, 369 Sugarcreek Drive, Franklin Georgetta Rebecca Distefano, Leeper Arlene McEntire Ernst, Anaheim, Calif., formerly of Franklin Larry F. Haskins, 10 Taylor St., Franklin Dora L. "Dode" Haugh, Parker Jack R. Heyison, 601 Cowell Ave., Oil City Joseph Duane Stearns, Charlotte, N.C., formerly of Titusville and Oil City Evelyn C. 'Hun' Brown Evelyn C. "Hun" Brown, 92, of 351 Causeway Drive, Franklin, died at 5:42 a.m. Wednesday, June 1, 2005, in UPMC Northwest, Seneca. Born Feb. 14, 1913, in Reno, she was the daughter of Samuel C. and Anna Heintzleman Confer. Mrs. Brown was a homemaker. She was married Dec. 22, 1946, to Frank A. Brown, who died in 1970. Surviving are three stepdaughters, Alice M. Proper of Salem, W.Va., Connie J. Latchaw and husband, Raymond, of Franklin and Betty L. Judy and husband, Bill, of Gray, Tenn.; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also is survived by a brother, Donald L. Confer of Franklin; two sisters, Violet Compton of Norfolk, Va., and Anna L. Terrill of Gary, Ind.; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters. There will be no visitation and no services. Interment will be in the Reno Cemetery. The Robert W. Gardinier Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Venango County Association for the Blind or to the Venango County VNA Foundation. Phyllis Carter Phyllis Carter, 78, of 369 Sugarcreek Drive, Franklin, died at 1:35 p.m. Tuesday, May 31, 2005, in UPMC Northwest, Seneca. Born Sept. 22, 1926, in Bradleytown, she was the daughter of Christen Plummer Cauvel and Blanche Shields Cauvel. Mrs. Carter was retired from County Home. She was a member of the Sugarcreek United Methodist Church. Mrs. Carter also was a member of the Franklin VFW Auxiliary, Franklin American Legion and Franklin Moose Auxiliary. She volunteered for a number of years at Venango Manor after her retirement. Mrs. Carter enjoyed fishing at her camp at Sugar Lake. She was married Oct. 5, 1942, to Homer T. Carter, who died in 1996. Surviving are two sons, Bill Carter and Richard Carter and his fiancee, Susan Cox, all of Franklin; a daughter, Sandra Carter and special friend, Ed Lynch, of Union City; six grandchildren, Melanie Salerno, Todd Ford, Cathyjo Carter and Kris Carter Cummings and husband, Tom, all of Franklin, Buffyjo O'Dell and husband, Ronald, of Cooperstown and Billejo Carter of New York, N.Y.; and eight great-grandchildren, Ron O'Dell, Abbie O'Dell and Emily O'Dell, all of Cooperstown, Cole and Stevie Ford, Brittany Cummings, Rhett Jr. Salerno and Cassandra Salerno, all of Franklin. She also is survived by a half brother, Norman Umstead and wife, Betty, of Franklin. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Carter was preceded in death by a brother, Bill Cauvel; and four sisters, Alviva Lidsey, Joan Hoover, Helen Worst and Irene Harvey. There will be no visitation. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today in the Robert W. Gardinier Funeral Home with the Rev. Ronald C. Bole, VNA Hospice minister, officiating. Interment will be in Franklin Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Rocky Grove Volunteer Fire Department. Georgetta Rebecca Distefano Georgetta Rebecca Distefano, 55, of Leeper, died Wednesday, June 1, 2005, at her home after an extended illness. Born June 6, 1949, in Fremont, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late George B. Hoffman and Elizabeth Mary Rogers, who now resides in Clarion. Mrs. Distefano was a 1967 graduate of Fremont Ross High School in Fremont, Ohio. She attended Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio, and Kent State University in Kent, Ohio, from 1967 to 1971, studying political science. She continued her education at Clarion State College, now Clarion University, from 1972 to 1982, graduating magna cum laude in 1979 with a bachelor of arts degree in history. In 1979 she also received her master's degree in history, followed by her Instructional I Certificate in secondary education in 1982. During her graduate studies in 1983-1984, Mrs. Distefano was chosen as a graduate assistant in the history department at Clarion University and taught for one semester there. From 1982 to 1995, she served as a substitute teacher for five area schools including long term substitute teaching positions at Clarion Area High School and East and West Forest schools. At Forest Area, she also served as volleyball coach. In 1995, she began teaching full-time at North Clarion High School at Tionesta RD where she taught sociology, psychology, American government and western civilization. She also served as the advisor to the National Honor Society, Student Council and the prom/banquet committees. Mrs. Distefano was an avid reader and enjoyed cooking, traveling, watching the Steelers and Penguins and spending time with her grandchildren and her cat, Bubba. She was married in Bowling Green, Ohio. Aug. 18. 1969, to Vincent Distefano Sr. of Leeper. He survives, along with her mother. Also surviving are two sons, Vincent C. Distefano Jr. and wife, Laura, of Lancaster and Anthony G. Distefano and his friend, Heather, of Harrisonburg, Va.; and two grandchildren, William and Michael. She also is survived by three half sisters, Margie Hille of Sandusky, Ohio, Judy Schlea of Fremont, Ohio, and Carol Smith of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; one brother, David Hoffman of Brick, N.J.; her mother-in-law, Angelina Distefano of Vowinckel; a brother-in-law, Tom Distefano and wife, Nancy, of Clarion; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Angela, and her father-in-law, Anthony Distefano. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in the Borland Funeral Home Inc. in Leeper. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Mary Church, Crown, with the Rev. Denny Veltri presiding. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family suggests memorials be sent to North Clarion High School for a scholarship to be set up in the near future. Arlene McEntire Ernst Arlene McEntire Ernst, 80, of Anaheim, Calif., formerly of Franklin, died Jan. 5, 2005, of cancer. She was born June 6, 1924, to Everett and Esther McEntire of Conneaut Lake. Mrs. Ernst was a 1940 graduate of Meadville High School. On Sept. 1, 1943, she married Charles F. Ernst and also graduated from Edinboro State Teachers College. Her husband preceded her in death in 1980. Mrs. Ernst taught school in Greenville and in Franklin at 14th Street School and at Sandy Creek Elementary School. She had been a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Franklin. In 1977, Mrs. Ernst and her husband retired to Anaheim, Calif., where she was a member of the Anaheim Senior Citizens Club. She was an avid bridge player. Surviving are a daughter, Linda S. Hager and her husband, Delmar G. Hager,9 of Austin, Texas; and grandchildren, Charlotte of Louisville, Ky., Ruthann, Regina, Daniel and Laela Hager. She also is survived by a brother-in-law, Dick Kennedy of Greenville; a nephew, Jon Kennedy of Charlotte, N.C.; and a niece, Kathy Kennedy of Sheridan, Wyo. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Ernst was preceded in death by her sister, Twana Kennedy in 1999, and her granddaughter, Aleesha A. Hager Lundberg in 2003. Friends may call from 6 to 7 p.m. Saturday in the Huff Chapel, 312 W. Park St., Franklin. A memorial service, open to relatives and friends, will follow at 7 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home. Haskins, 56, of 10 Taylor St., Franklin, died at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 31, 2005, in UPMC Northwest, Seneca. Born Jan. 31, 1949, in Grafton, W.Va., he was the son of Franklin E. and Juanita A. Malone Haskins. He attended high school in Coraopolis. Mr. Haskins served with the U.S. Marine Corps from 1967 to 1971. He served a tour of duty in Vietnam with the 1st Marine Division I Corps where he received the Silver Star, the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. He was employed for 25 years in the maintenance department at Franklin High School. Mr. Haskins enjoyed fishing and woodworking. He married the former Donna Hoffman in March 1972. Surviving are three sons, Bryan Haskins, Todd Haskins and Shaun Haskins, all of Cooperstown; and a granddaughter, Evangeline Haskins of Cooperstown. He also is survived by his mother, Juanita Haskins of Coraopolis; three brothers, John Haskins and Paul Haskins and wife, Elaine, all of Coraopolis, and Kenneth Haskins and wife, Colleen, of Auburn, Mass.; a sister, Sherry Hornack and husband, Andrew, of Coraopolis; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 8:30 p.m. today in the funeral home. Interment will be made at 1 p.m. Friday in the Sewickley Cemetery. Dora L. 'Dode' Haugh Dora L. "Dode" Haugh, 87, of Parker, died Wednesday afternoon, June 1, 2005, in Bear Creek Rest Center, Parker, after an illness. Born March 12, 1918, in Parker, she was the daughter of John and Lillian Foringer Hottel. Mrs. Haugh was a graduate of the former Parker High School and was Protestant by faith. She had been employed for 15 years at the former W.A. Moyer & Sons Level Vial Works in Parker. She then worked for six years in the school cafeterias in Allegheny-Clarion Valley School District. Mrs. Haugh was married to Harry E. Haugh, who died May 27, 2003. Surviving are a sister-in-law, Enie Hottel of Parker; one niece, Patty White of Butler; and three nephews, David White of Pennsylvania, Howard White of Butler and Michael Hottel of California. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Haugh was preceded in death by a sister, Grace White; and three brothers, George, Earl and William Hottel. Friends may all from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in the H. Jack Buzard Funeral Home, Wayne Street, Parker. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home. Interment will be in Parker Presbyterian Cemetery. Jack R. Heyison Jack R. Heyison, 91, of 601 Cowell Ave., Oil City, died Tuesday, May 31, 2005, in Sugar Creek Station, Franklin. Born Aug. 6, 1913, in Oil City, he was the son of Joseph and Ida Fisher Heyison, both immigrants from what is now Kannas Province Lithuania. Mr. Heyison was a lifelong member of the Oil City YMCA where he developed his intense love of athletics, particularly basketball and handball. He continued playing basketball at Oil City High School where he was a star guard on the 1929 and 1930 teams. Winning an athletic scholarship at Penn State, he played basketball and tennis and was elected president of his fraternity, Phi Sigma Delta. After graduating in 1935, he attended the University of Pennsylvania Law School, graduating in 1938 as a member of the Order of Coif. Mr. Heyison returned to Oil City and began his general law practice in 1939, practicing for almost 60 years. He was a member of the Venango County, Pennsylvania and American Bar Association. In the late 1960s he became a member of the Oil City Charter Commission and helped organized the city's current form of government. He also played a leading role in the Oil City Centennial Commission in 1971 and was elected to Oil City Council, serving from 1972 to 1976. Mr. Heyison was a former trustee and lifelong member of the Tree of Life Synagogue, a long serving director of the Oil City YMCA and the Allegheny AAA, a member of the Oil City Elks where he was a past exalted ruler, and a member of Wanango Country Club where he was an avid golfer, complementing his love of tennis and handball. On July 26, 1953, he married the former Florence Recht of Aliquippa and she survives. Also surviving are two sons, Joseph Heyison of Stamford, Conn., and Michael Heyison of Wellesley, Mass.; and four grandchildren, Brenda, Alex, Caila and Hilary. In addition to his parents, Mr. Heyison was preceded in death by a brother, Abe Heyison; and two sisters, Rose Landskroner and Sylvia Sokolsky. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. today in the Morrison Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in the funeral home with Adriane Caplowe, spiritual leader at the B'Nai Abraham Synagogue in Butler, officiating. Interment will be in the Jewish Cemetery near Titusville. In lieu of floral tributes, donations may be made to the Tree of Life Synagogue or to the Oil City YMCA. Joseph Duane Searns Joseph Duane Stearns, 42, formerly of Titusville and Oil City, died at his home in Charlotte, N.C., Monday, May 30, 2005, as the result of an accident. Born March 10, 1963, in Titusville, he was the son of Charles Alfred and Sarah Louise Robishaw Stearns. Mr. Stearns was a tanker truck driver. He was a member of the New Life Baptist Church in Charlotte, N.C. Mr. Stearns collected die cast tractor trailers and steins. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and NASCAR. On Jan. 27, 1981, he married the former Martha Jean Sanford. They moved from Oil City to Charlotte in March 2002. Also surviving are a son, Joseph Duane Stearns Jr. of Oil City; two daughters, Nancy Rose Elaine Hayden of Oil City and Lisa Marie Stearns of Charlotte, N.C.; and a grandson, Jacob James Hayden. He also is survived by his mother of Cherrytree; two brothers, Douglas Stearns of Spanaway, Wash., and Daniel "Pete" Stearns of Oil City; and two sisters, Charlene Armstrong and Joyce Berlin, both of Pleasantville. Mr. Stearns was preceded in death by his father and a sister, Cheryl Stearns. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in the Huff Chapel, 312 W. Park St., Franklin. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home with the Rev. Rick Barker, pastor of the New Life Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will follow in the Franklin Cemetery.
