He was known by many names including Coach, Russ and "Ripper," but the one he cherished most was "Pop" as he was affectionately known by his eight grandchildren. Born Jan. 5, 1931, in Wesleyville, he was the son of the late Richard C. and Mildred Reichart Russell. Mr. Russell grew up in the Rocky Grove/Franklin area and always spoke fondly of the time he spent as a youth at the old YMCA on 13th Street, Franklin. He graduated in 1949 from Franklin High School and was a member of the school's championship football and basketball teams. He then enrolled at Clarion State College and graduated in 1959 with a bachelor of science degree in education. In 1967, he received his master's degree in guidance from Edinboro University. Mr. Russell was a respected athlete in all sports. During his career, he played baseball in the Hayrake League for the Re-Arm Team and it was during this time that he was given the name "Ripper" because of the number of home runs he hit. As a freshman at Clarion State College, he played varsity basketball. He then played for the local independent basketball teams of Schenck's, Franklin Elks and Franklin Re-Arm, with those teams rated as the best among the independent cage clubs in this part of the state. In 1958, the Re-Arm team went to the National YMCA Basketball Tournament in Salina, Kan., and advanced to the finals. He then was named head basketball coach at Franklin High School in 1970, a position he held until 1978. His 1977-78 basketball team advanced to the district playoffs. He was out of coaching for a few years and prior to his retirement from education in 1993, he went back into coaching at the JV level for seven years. He truly loved teaching the game of basketball evidenced by his 23 years as a coach. In earlier years, he also was very involved in the youth basketball programs at the Franklin YMCA. Following his coaching career, Mr. Russell and his wife were loyal fans of Franklin High School athletic teams. Mr. Russell was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Franklin where he served on the board of trustees and also was a member of the ushering team.
