"Woody" Wood, 4373 Old Route 8 North, Titusville Esther L. Bahnsen Esther L. Bahnsen, 86, of Trinity Living Center, Grove City, since Feb. 18, 2004, formerly of Clintonville and Kennerdell, died at 11:15 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, 2007, after an extended illness. Born March 27, 1921, in North Side, Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of Clyde A. Clever and Henrietta Neuner. She attended the Herron Public School and graduated from Schenley High School in Pittsburgh. Mrs. Bahnsen had worked for more than 18 years at the Kennerdell Music and Art Festival, having served on the governing board. She was a member of the Clintonville Presbyterian Church and previously was a 25-year member of the Kennerdell Church of God. Mrs. Bahnsen was a member of the AARP in Clintonville and the Senior Citizens at the Scrubgrass Grange in Lisbon for more than 15 years. She was a devoted housewife. Mrs. Bahnsen was married May 4, 1946, to Herman P. Bahnsen, who died April 29, 1980. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Bahnsen was preceded in death by two brothers, Clyde A. Clever and Samuel B. Clever, both formerly of Pittsburgh. Friends will be received from 11 a.m. to noon today in the Larry E. McKinley Funeral Home, 109 Emlenton St., Clintonville. Goughler, 49, of 306 Sugarcreek Drive, Franklin, died at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, 2007, in the home of her parents surrounded by her loving family. Born Oct. 26, 1958, in Franklin, she was the daughter of William and Marjorie Sutley Orr. She was a 1977 graduate of Rocky Grove High School. As her health permitted, she attended the Sugarcreek United Methodist Church. She enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting with members of her family. She loved spending quality time with her family and will be remembered as a devoted grandmother to her grandchildren. She was very creative in home decorating and landscaping around her home. Surviving, in addition to her parents of Franklin, are her daughter, Michelle Orr Shaderline, and five grandchildren, Shauna, Jenna, Jeffrey, Tristin and Shawn, all of Franklin. She also is survived by two brothers and their wives, Jeff and Lisa Orr and Larry and Debra Orr, and a sister, Brenda Rhodes and fianc,, Sam Rice, all of Franklin; three nieces, Lisa and Amanda Orr and Amy Domres; and two nephews, Kevin Orr and Thomas Rhodes Jr. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Lawrence and Opal Orr; and her maternal grandparents, Elmer and Dessie Sutley. Phipps, 97, of Grove Manor Nursing Home, Grove City, since 2000, formerly of Clintonville, died at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, 2007, after a brief illness. Mr. Phipps had lived at Clintonville for more than 60 years prior to moving to Grove City. Born Nov. 12, 1909, in Irwin Township, Venango County, he was the son of Lowry Phipps and Alma Surrena. He attended the public school in Irwin Township and also attended Wesley High School located in Wesley. He was a graduate of Grove City High School. Mr. Phipps had worked as a machinist at Cooper Energies-Cooper Cameron in Grove City until his retirement in 1973. He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Clintonville where he was active as a deacon and attending Sunday school in earlier years. Mr. Phipps enjoyed gardening and yard work and hunting in earlier years and most of all his family and grandchildren. He was married June 6, 1934, to Olive L. McElroy, who preceded him in death Sept. 18, 1993. Surviving are one son, James W. Phipps and wife, Charlotte L., of Grove City; three grandchildren, Mrs. Patrick (Sharon) Stone of Butler, the Rev. Richard J. Phipps and wife, Marsha, of West Mifflin and Randy E. Phipps and wife, Rita, of Perrysburg, Ohio; and five great-grandchildren, Katie Stone and Tyler Stone of Butler, McKenna and Abby Phipps of West Mifflin and Kade Phipps of Perrysburg, Ohio. He also is survived by two brothers, Paul Phipps of Grove City and Andy Phipps of California. "Peg" Smith, 90, of 551 Smith Road, Sandy Lake, Mill Creek Township, died at 2:35 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, 2007, in Grove City Medical Center after a brief illness. Born June 27, 1917, in Grove City, she was the daughter of Jesse E. and Twila J. Snyder Gardner. She was a 1935 graduate of Grove City High School and attended Grove City College. For many years, Mrs. Smith, along with her husband, Robert M. Smith, owned and operated Smith Dairy Farm of Mill Creek Township, now owned and operated by their son, Steve. She also was the Mill Creek Township tax collector for many years. Mrs. Smith enjoyed music and was a member for many years of the Mel-O-Dears Barbershop Quartet which sang locally. She was a faithful and active member of the New Lebanon Community Church where she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir and helped with Bible school. Mrs. Smith was a homemaker who enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an avid reader and liked quilting. She was married June 22, 1938, to Robert S. Smith, who preceded her in death Jan. 3, 2000. They were married for 61 years. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. William L. (Janet S.) Hovis of Cochranton, Mrs. Carl G. (Judy S.) Twilla of Carlton and Mrs. Dennis (Shirley S.) Newberry of Las Vegan, Nev.; one son, Steven G. Smith and wife, Donna, of Carlton; three grandchildren, Mrs. David (Jill) Musser of State College, Jason S. Trubic and wife, Tammy, of Sandy Lake and Mrs. Michael (Julie) Thumann of Cincinnati, Ohio; 10 stepgrandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren. Born April 26, 1940, in Titusville, he was the son of the late Conard and Marian Brickner Wood. He was a 1958 graduate of Titusville High School. Mr. Wood was employed as an electrician most of his career with IBEW Union No. 712. He also previously worked as a union welder and built race car engines in Ohio, North Carolina and Florida. He was an avid race car driver and was known locally as the driver of the "Black Widow." He raced at Tri City Speedway, Erie, Stateline, Sharon, Knox and Raceway 7. He also was a road racer at the Nelson Ledges in Ohio. Mr. Wood was an avid pistol shooter and was a member of the Gem City Sportsman's Club in Harborcreek and also was a member of the Isaac Walton Sportsman's Club in Oil City. Surviving are a sister, Susan Fry and husband, Robert, of Titusville; his fianc,e, Patricia Klus-Owens of Erie; two nieces, Cricket Tracey and husband, Ken, and Jennifer "Pooh" Fry and Will Kinney; a nephew, Conard "Skeeter" Fry and wife, Bonnie; several cousins including Betty Hollabaugh and husband, Joe, and Jeannette Ensle, all of Titusville; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
