Watson, getting it right Violet Mae Conner Violet Mae Conner, 86, of Riverview Apartments, East Brady, formerly of Sandy Hollow, Rimersburg, died of natural causes early Monday morning, Sept. 13, 2004, at her residence. The Richard D. Hillis Funeral Home in Rimersburg is in charge of arrangements. A complete obituary will be published Wednesday in The Derrick. W. Virgil Hovis W. Virgil Hovis of Sewickley died Sunday, Sept. 12, 2004. Mr. Hovis was the owner for 63 years of the Sunoco Station at the Sewickley Bridge. His wife, Dorothy Dame Hovis, survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Karen Furney of Napoleon, Ohio, and Donna Schirmer of Fairfield, Va.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He also is survived by a sister, Ruth Hovis of Oil City; and several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Richard D. Cole Funeral Home, Inc., 328 Beaver St., Sewickley. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home. Interment will be in Clintonville. Walter W. Jackson Walter W. Jackson, 93, of Walnut Street, Emlenton, died unexpectedly at 3:54 a.m. Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, shortly after his arrival in the emergency room at UPMC Northwest, Franklin. Born June 19, 1911, in Richland Township, Clarion County, he was the son of Oscar A. and Sadie B. Kagle Jackson. Mr. Jackson attended St. Petersburg Schools and graduated in 1930 from Emlenton High School. He received a bachelor of science degree from Wharton School of Finance and Commerce of the University of Pennsylvania. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as an officer with the 2nd Armored Division. He retained reserve status, earned the rank of lieutenant colonel and was the commander of the 409th Civil Affairs Co. at Franklin. Mr. Jackson was employed for many years by the Quaker State Corp. as an internal auditor. He retired in 1976. He was a member of the Emlenton United Methodist Church where he had served as Sunday school superintendent for many years and was a member of the church's administrative board and was a trustee for many years. Mr. Jackson also served as a member of the board of education of the Allegheny-Clarion School District. He was a member and past secretary of the A-C Valley Kiwanis Club of the Emlenton area. He belonged to the Parker City-Allegheny Valley Lodge No. 521, F. & A.M., and the Consistory, Valley of Coudersport. He was a member of the Franklin Elks Club and the Miller-Rankin American Legion Post No. 636 in Foxburg. Mr. Jackson enjoyed gardening and playing cards. He was married in Pittsburgh March 6, 1942, to Catherine Jane McCullough, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Patricia A. Greene of Randallstown, Md., and Mrs. Gail Y. Miller and husband, Gary L., of Pasadena, Md.; a granddaughter, Kristina Miller of Pasadena, Md.; and a son-in-law, Leonard Greene of Baltimore, Md. He also is survived by two sisters, Zella Dunkle of Titusville and Mrs. Thelma Rhoades of Knox; a brother and his wife, Arnell E. and Evelyn Jackson of Audobon, N.J.; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert W. Jackson, and a sister, Margaret R. Beck. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the Hile Funeral Home Inc., 1204 Kerr Ave. at Walnut Street, Emlenton. Box 67, Emlenton, 16373. Helen M. Karns Helen M. Karns, 88, a resident of St. Mary's of Asbury, 4855 W. Ridge Road, Erie, formerly of Reno, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 2004, at St. Mary 's. She was born May 14, 1916, the daughter of Lawrence and Blanche Martin Myers. Mrs. Karns retired as a food service supervisor at Polk State School. After retirement, she spent time with her husband in Chautauqua, N.Y. She was a lifelong member of the Reno United Methodist Church and was active in the Reno community. Mrs. Karns was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Karns Sr., in 1998. Surviving are a son, Frank C. Karns and wife, Maureen, of Fairview; a daughter, Pat Romano and husband, Donald, of Short Hills, N.J.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She also is survived by four sisters, Dorothy Dunshie and husband, Robert, of Portville, Genieve Anderson and husband, Alfred, of Louisiana, Virginia Simon and husband, Raymond, of Olean, N.Y., and Bonnie Bartlett and husband, Robert, of Phoenix, Ariz. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Karns was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister. Diana Lynn Smith Diana Lynn Smith, 49, of 157 Pear St., Cranberry Township, died at 3:45 p.m. Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, at her residence following an extended illness. Born Dec. 31, 1954, in Franklin, she was the daughter of Cecil and Patricia Frantz Smith. She was a 1972 graduate of Franklin High School. Ms. Smith was employed for the past 29½ years as a custodial lead worked at Polk Center, retiring there in May due to health reasons. She and her life companion, Angel C. Alcorn, owned and operated the popular eatery, the Plane View Take-Out Restaurant in Mapledale for a number of years. Ms. Smith was a member of the VFW Jesse Greer Post No. 1835 of Franklin. She also was a member of the Franklin Women's Pool League of the Corner Pocket Lounge in Franklin where she was a second- and third-place finisher on many occasions. Ms. Smith was of the Protestant faith. As her health permitted, she enjoyed playing poker with her family and friends, spending time in the outdoors, especially camping and fishing and a general love of nature. She also enjoyed horseback riding. Surviving, in addition to Ms. Alcorn of Franklin, are her mother, Patricia Frantz Smith of Franklin; two brothers, Cecil Smith Jr. and wife, Carol, of Stoneboro and Mike "Bob" Smith of Franklin; two sisters, Jan Carlson and husband, Matthew, of Sugarcreek Borough and Lou Ann Smith of Franklin; many nieces and nephews; and Rachael Macvay, daughter of Ms. Alcorn. She was preceded in death by her father. At her request, there will be no public visitation. A graveside service, open to family and friends, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Franklin Cemetery.
