    3. Hilda M. Harris, 302 Hiland Ave., Oil City Paul S. Kepple, Sharon, East Brady native Jack W. Osman, Alexandria, Va., formerly of Oil City Hilda M. Harris, 83, of 302 Hiland Ave., Oil City, died at 5:10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004, in the Oil City Presbyterian Home. Born Aug. 30, 1921, in Knox, she was the daughter of James A. and Freda Hartzell Wice. She was a 1940 graduate of Oil City High School and had lived in Oil City all of her life. Mrs. Harris had worked as an Avon salesperson for more than 35 years and was a member of the President's Club of Avon. She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Oil City and the Farther With Christ Class of the church. Mrs. Harris enjoyed sewing, crocheting and knitting. She was married June 17, 1946, to Ralph F. Harris, who survives. Also surviving are five daughters, Judy Reilly and husband, Tom, of Franklin, Sandra Bailey and Steve Conca of Folsom, Calif., Roxann Harris and husband, Joe Kloss, of Lonetree, Colo., Pamela Sponenburgh and husband, Steve, of Youngsville and Doreen Kurschinske and friend, Sam Schrecengost, of Shippenville; one son, Ralph Edward Harris of Oil City; 10 grandchildren, Christine Liscinsky and husband, Steve, Lisa Reilly, Chad Reilly, Emily Kloss, Joey Kloss, Stephanie Sponenburgh, Kristin Kurschinske, Ashley Rapp, Heather Rapp and Autumn Rapp; and one great-grandson, Nicholas Liscinsky. She also is survived by three brothers, Thomas Wice and wife, Janet, of Plumer, James S. Wice and wife, Carol, of Oil City and Clifford A. Wice of Seneca. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Harris was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Gary Bailey; three sisters, Helen McLaughlin, Melda Wice and Edna Wice; and two brothers, Norbert Wice and Russell Wice. Kepple, 72, of 87 Wengler Ave., Sharon, died of natural causes at 11:35 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2004, at his residence following a brief illness. Born Sunday, Oct. 11, 1931, in East Brady, he was the son of Stanley and Margaret Flick Kepple. He was a 1951 graduate of Sligo High School and a graduate of Clarion State Teachers College with a bachelor of science degree in education. He then went on to earn a master's degree of science in education from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Mr. Kepple owned the former Kepple Realty in Sharon and previously taught school in Clarion, Midland and Austin, Pa. He was a member of the National Association of Realtors. Mr. Kepple was of the Protestant faith. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, photography and collecting antiques. Mr. Kepple was married March 21, 1959, to the former Lois L. Havens, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter and husband, Melissa D. and Donald D. Noble Jr. of Sharon; a son and his wife, Brian and Brenda Kepple of Sharon; three granddaughters, Brittany Noble, Suzanne Kepple and Kesley Kepple; and two grandsons, Todd Noble and Zachary Kepple. He also is survived by two sisters, Mary Kriebel and husband, Ivan, and Martha Kepple, all of Callensburg; and two brothers, Arnold Kepple of Callensburg and Ronald Kepple and wife, Judith, of Shepherdstown, W.Va. Osman, 63, of Alexandria, Va., formerly of Oil City, died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2004, at his home of natural causes. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Jack E. and Evelyn A. Osman, who were born and raised in Oil City and were former residents. Mr. Osman was a 1959 graduate of Oil City High School. He attended Allegheny College, Meadville; the University of Pittsburgh School of Business; and the Wharton School of Business, Philadelphia. He served in the United States Army for three years and received an honorable discharge. Mr. Osman was employed as advertising sales representative by various publishers and magazines including McGraw-Hill Publications, Pittsburgh; U.S. News & World Report, Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C.; and Compass Publications, Arlington, Va., where he last worked in 2001. Surviving are Sandra Socrates of Alexandria, Va., formerly of Pittsburgh, his domestic partner for 20 years; two sons from a previous marriage, Jon C. Osman and T.J. Osman, both of Pittsburgh; and six grandchildren. He also is survived by his mother, Evelyn A. Osman of Lancaster; and one sister, Joanne Osman Haberberger of Reading, a graduate of Oil City High School, Clarion University and Penn State. He was preceded in death by his father, Jack E. Osman. His cremains were interred Saturday, Aug. 28, in the First Presbyterian Church, Lancaster. Robinson, Meadville, formerly of Cochranton Phyllis Ann Bedzyk Vernum, Seneca Richard Edward Vernum, 141 E. State Road, Seneca Leland G. "Lee" Wirtner, 3287 Bell Road, Emlenton Olin A. Altman, 70, of Gravelick Road, Leeper, died Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004, at his residence. Born in Clarington Nov. 24, 1933, he was the son of Maurice William and Ada Fay Dunkle Altman. He was a Korean War veteran serving in the Army as a paratrooper. Mr. Altman worked as a laborer, carpenter and driller. He was of the Methodist faith. Mr. Altman was a member of the VFW and American Legion. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, loved being outdoors and enjoyed nature, finding mushrooms, nuts, berries and leeks. Mr. Altman was married March 21, 1956, to Shirley M. Sleppy, who survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Freda F. LaPier of Scotch Hill; four grandchildren, Christine O'Donnell, Michael Eck, Lurinda Clark and Mitchell Altman; and two great-grandchildren, Alexia LaPier and Nevaeh Hachter. Mr. Altman was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Timothy O. Altman, Feb. 22, 2004; and a sister, Phyllis Jane Altman Cassatt. He was preceded in death by his parents. There will be no visitation. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Scotch Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Mark Hurst officiating. Interment will follow there. The Goble Funeral Home of Clarion is in charge of arrangements. Dennis E. Brown, 58, a resident of Bruin for the past 30 years, formerly of Foxburg, died at 12:50 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, at his residence after an extended illness. Born July 14, 1946, in Irwin Township, Venango County, he was the son of Earl M. and Dorothy J. Kirkham Brown. He was a 1964 graduate of A-C Valley School District in Foxburg. After graduation, Mr. Brown worked at the Parker Glass Plant and then served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam from Nov. 16, 1965, to Nov. 15, 1967. Mr. Brown retired in July 2002 from Indspec Chemical Co. in Petrolia after 32 years of service in the labor department. He was a life member and past commander of VFW Post 7073 in Parker and presently was junior vice commander in the VFW. Mr. Brown was of the Methodist faith. He was a member of the Bruin Bowling League, the Tri-County Men's League and the Petrolia Valley Men's Bowling League. He also was a member of Bruin Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Brown enjoyed hunting and fishing. Prior to his son, Dustin, enlisting in the U.S. Air Force, they enjoyed micro-car racing as a hobby in the surrounding area. He was married Feb. 27, 1976, to Paulette K. "Polly" Bell, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Dennis "Rocky" Brown Jr. of Bruin and Dustin G. Brown with the U.S. Air Force in Kun Sun Air Force Base, Korea. He also is survived by four brothers-in-law, Gerald W. Bell of Chicora and Thomas A. Bell, James R. Bell and John W. Bell, all of Chicora RD 1, and a sister-in-law, Rebecca A. Bell of Bruin. Mr. Brown was preceded in death by his mother on Dec. 29, 1985, his father on Oct. 20, 1986, and an infant brother, Melvin. Dorsett, 85, a resident of Warren Manor, Pleasant Township, Warren County, formerly of Marienville, died Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004, in Warren Manor. Born Nov. 27, 1918, she was the daughter of Charles and Bessie J. Hepinger Cussins. In her early years, Mrs. Dorsett worked at the Knox Glass Co. of Marienville and later was a home care aide for the Office of the Aging. She was a volunteer at the Snyder Memorial Home. Mrs. Dorsett was married Aug. 18, 1945, to Delmar E. Dorsett, who died Nov. 11, 1985. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Dennis (Jane Dorsett) Covert of Coraopolis; one son, Tim E. Dorsett and wife, Cindy, of Warren; five grandchildren, Kristian Covert of Sharpsville, Kayla Covert of Moon Township, Erin Dorsett Napolitan of Warren, Deana Dorsett of Carnegie and Cara Dorsett of Warren; and two great-granddaughters, Rylee and Taylor Napolitan of Warren. She also is survived by two sisters, Leora Silvis and Esther McDonald, both of Marienville. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Dorsett was preceded in death by an infant grandson, Jason Robert Covert, in August 1979; two brothers, Gerald Cussins and Nathan Cussins; and four sisters, Ruth Schrecengost, June Hulings, Doris Hetrick and Lenora Weber Mullin. Fair, 58, of Perry Township near Parker, died suddenly Friday afternoon, Sept. 3, 2004, of injuries sustained in a two-vehicle accident on Route 368 near Callensburg. Born Oct. 13, 1945, in Piney Township, Clarion County, she was the daughter of Richard and Helen Johnson Best. She was a homemaker and enjoyed attending yard sales and spending time with her family. She was of the United Methodist faith. Surviving are one daughter, Joanie Pugh of Knox; three sons, Robert Pugh of Sandy Lake and Patrick Pugh and Wesley "Wes" Fair, both of Dutch Hill; and eight grandchildren. She also is survived by two sisters, Shelby Wolfe of West Freedom and Mrs. Terry (Sue) Deitz of Sligo; two brothers, Mike Best of Parker and Jessie Best of Rimersburg; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her longtime companion, Russell Wyant. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today in the H. "Bud' Johnston, 83, formerly of 204 Second Ave., Rouseville, died at 4:10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004, in the Oil City Presbyterian Home where he had resided for the past several years. Born Nov. 26, 1920, in DuBois, he was the son of Roy R. and Anna W. Tattersol Johnston. He was a graduate of DuBois High School. Upon graduating from high school, he went on to play semi-pro football until an injury ended his career. Mr. Johnston was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps with duty in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of Operations. He had been employed for 37 years by the United Natural Gas Co., which later became National Fuel Gas. He retired in 1982 as a sub-foreman from the Mars plant. Upon returning to Oil City after his retirement, he worked as a guard for Allied Security. Mr. Johnston was a life member of the DuBois VFW and Military Order of Cooties and was a past commander. He also was a life member of the Fourth Ward Hose Co. No. 4 Fire Department in DuBois. He was a 35-year member of the American Legion Post No. 0787 in Mars. He enjoyed hunting, watching high school sports, especially football, and being around family and friends. Mr. Johnston was married in Oil City Aug. 14, 1950, to the former Mabel E. Dunkel of Oil City. She survives. Also surviving are a daughter and husband, Linda and Matthew Sargent of Rouseville; two grandchildren, Melissa Sargent of Rouseville and Matthew Sargent and wife, Kelly, of Maryland; three great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Jennifer and Matthew Sargent of Maryland; and several aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews. "Bud" Long, 78, of Emlenton, a longtime Emlenton businessman, died at 5:25 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004, in Beverly Healthcare-Shippenville. Born Jan. 8, 1926, in New Kensington, he was the son of John Albert and Maude Rae Sutton Long. He was a 1944 graduate of Emlenton High School. Mr. Long was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He and his wife owned and operated Long's Cleaners in Emlenton for more than 40 years. He retired in 1995. Mr. Long had been a member of the Odd Fellows. He was involved in Boy Scouts in the Emlenton area for many years. He enjoyed bowling and golfing and was a sports enthusiast. Mr. Long was a member of Emlenton Presbyterian Church. He was married in Muscogee, Okla., Feb. 3, 1945, to Grace Marie Hindman, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Charles Albert Long and wife, Dorothy, of Crosby and John William Long of Parker; a daughter-in-law, Bonnie J. Long of Parker; eight grandchildren, Melissa Lee Long, Wendy Marie Kaziska, Jessica Louise Long, Mandy Marie Bittinger, Megan Jane Long, Melinda Ann Long, Jacob Michael Long and Connie Margaret Long; and six great-grandchildren, Matthew James Kaziska, Justin Charles Kaziska, Ashley Michelle Kaziska, Lacy Marie Martin, Jaren Bittinger and Aven Bittinger. He also is survived by a brother, Albert Dale Long of Waterloo, Ala.; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. McDevitt, 61, of 10 Arbor Circle, Franklin, died at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3, 2004, in The Caring Place, Franklin. Born Sept. 9, 1942, in Franklin, she was the daughter of Grover and Dora Mae DeLong Shoffstall. Mrs. McDevitt worked at various restaurants in Florida and McDonald's in Franklin as a service worker. Surviving are four brothers, Grover A. Shoffstall of Franklin, Richard Shoffstall of Plant City, Fla., Lawrence Shoffstall of Franklin and Donald Shoffstall of Columbus, Ohio; and three sisters, Pauline Shorts, Mary Wentworth and Nancy Sires, all of Franklin. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Charlie Shoffstall. There will be no viewing or service. Interment will be in Old Sandy Cemetery. The Robert W. Robinson, 93, a resident of Cordia Commons, Meadville, for nine years, formerly of Cochranton, died Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, in the Crawford County Care Center, Saegertown. Born Sept. 16, 1910, in Hobaker, she was the daughter of Leonodus and Harriet Atwell Sutton. She was a 1929 graduate of Rocky Grove High School and a 1930 graduate of Welch's Business College, Oil City. Mrs. Robinson worked as a bookkeeper at Reynolds Red & White in Franklin. She also was a homemaker. She was a member of Sugar Lake United Methodist Church and taught Bible studies at the church. Mrs. Robinson was married April 20, 1932, to Gerald Robinson, who died Oct. 5, 1992. Surviving are a son and wife, Gerald and Barbara Robinson of Poland, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Jay Richard Robinson of Phoenixville, Richard Dewayne Robinson II of Raleigh, N.C., Teresa M. Peterson and husband, Bruce, and Tracy Carroll and husband, Kevin, all of Cochranton, Cindy Gouldsberry and husband, Rick, and Brian Robinson and wife, Beth, all of Poland, Ohio, Beth Bowen of Citrus Heights, Calif., and Bruce Robinson of North Highlands, Calif; 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Phyllis Ann Bedzyk Vernum, 50, of Seneca, died unexpectedly Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004, in Perry Township, Clarion County, Born Jan. 11, 1954, in Ambridge, she was the daughter of John and Lucille Bedzyk. She graduated from Ambridge High School and later from Penn State with a degree in nursing. Throughout her nursing career, Mrs. Vernum was employed with the Surgery & Laser Center in Seneca, Fritz Orthopedic Center in Franklin and the Clarion Hospital. Mrs. Vernum was a member of the Holy Ghost Orthodox Church in Ambridge. She enjoyed riding motorcycles and traveling. Surviving are her mother of North Carolina; two sons, Brian and Michael Pratt, both of Seneca; and a brother, John Bedzyk of North Carolina. She was preceded in death by her father in 1988. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to a charity of one's choice. Richard Edward Vernum, 49, of 141 East State Road, Seneca, died Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004. Born Nov. 16, 1954, in Lake George, N.Y., he was the son of Helen Johnson Vernum. Mr. Vernum was employed for 27 years by Merisol in Rouseville. He was a member of the Titusville Aero Club and enjoyed traveling in his RV, riding his Harley and attending different rallies. Mr. Vernum was a loving father and grandfather. He was married to the former Phyllis Pratt Nov. 16, 1992, in Las Vegas, Nev. Surviving are two daughters, Heidi J. Hulsizer and husband, Joseph K., and Heather M. Schurg and husband, Walter E., and a granddaughter, Mackenzie J. Schurg, all of Oil City; and two stepsons, Brian Pratt and Michael Pratt, both of Seneca. "Lee" Wirtner, 69, of 3287 Bell Road, Emlenton, died at 5:10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 6, 2004, at his residence. Born March 14, 1935, in Pittsburgh, he was the son of Cyril and Ruth Ryan Wirtner. He was a graduate of Oliver High School in Pittsburgh. Mr. Wirtner served with the U.S. Air Force in Germany and North Africa. He was employed as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Erie from 1969 until his retirement in 1995. After his retirement, Mr. Wirtner moved with his family to the Emlenton area. Mr. Wirtner was married June 22, 1968, to the former RuthAnn Feltenberger, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Heidi Leanne Wirtner of Eau Claire; a brother, Jan C. Wirtner and wife, Theresa, of Erie; a brother-in-law, Dennis Feltenberger and wife, Anna Mae, of North East; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Hildagarde Wirtner. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the Huff Chapel, 312 W. Park St., Franklin.     3. Charles A. Gillette, Venice, Fla., formerly of Oil City Walter John Kaiser, 437 Township Line Road, Oil City Robert M. Meals, 3974 Deep Hollow Road, Oil City Charles A. Gillette, 66, of Venice, Fla., formerly of Oil City, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, in Venice Hospital, Venice, Fla. Born Nov. 1, 1937, in Oil City, he was the son of Walter and Phyllis Huth Gillette. Following his graduation from Oil City High School, Mr. Gillette joined the U.S. Navy and served from 1956 to 1966, including two tours of Vietnam Mr. Gillette retired as a computer programmer for Alltel in Albany, N.Y., and then worked for Sears in Sarasota, Fla. He was an avid Steelers fan. Mr. Gillette was married Dec. 23, 1966, to Joyce A. Haines Myers of Venice. She survives. Also surviving are three sons, Lance D. Inurnment will be in Sunset Hill Memorial Gardens, Cranberry. Walter John Kaiser, 68, of 437 Township Line Road, Oil City, died Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004, at his residence. Born Dec. 4, 1935, in Catskill, N.Y., he was a son of Walter Morris and Klasina Catharina TerVeen Kaiser. Mr. Kaiser had worked as a welder at Joy Manufacturing prior to operating a septic tank cleaning business. He enjoyed model airplanes, fishing, raising Pomeranians and his grandchildren. Mr. Kaiser was a member of Heckathorn United Methodist Church. On April 26, 1977, he married the former Jeannette Franklin, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Walter Mark Kaiser and wife, Gerry, of Templeton; a daughter, Susan King and husband, Les, of Oil City; five grandchildren, Lisa Mook, Fred Mook, Alexis King, Sarah Kaiser and Matthew Kaiser, all of Oil City; and several stepgrandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. Mr. Kaiser was preceded in death by his parents. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Morrison Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home with the Rev. Pat Ellis, pastor of Heckathorn United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be in Heckathorn Cemetery. Robert M. Meals, 77, of 3974 Deep Hollow Road, died at 7:55 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004, in the Transitional Care Unit of UPMC Northwest, Oil City. Born Sept. 5, 1926, in Argentine, Pa., he was the son of Sam and Alice Greer Meals. He was a veteran of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War and served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 until 1966. Mr. Meals had been employed as a construction worker and meat cutter. He was a member of the Jesse G. Greer Post No. 1835 VFW for more than 40 years, served as commander for seven years and held many offices in the post. He currently was serving as a trustee. Mr. Meals was married Aug. 3, 1980, to Sara Umstead Gregory, who died Feb. 10, 2004. Surviving are five stepchildren, Dorothy L. Legler of Oil City, Beverly A. Mercado of Chicago, Ill., Christina J. Howard and companion, Richard McGinnis Jr., of Franklin, Richard W. Gregory and wife, Elsa, of Utica and Kenneth E. Gregory of Franklin; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. He also is survived by his stepmother, Maxine Meals of Ridgway; and two brothers, Merle Meals of Lady Lake, Fla., and Wesley Meals of Ridgway. In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Meals was preceded in death by a brother, James Meals. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Huff Chapel, 312 W. Park St., Franklin. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Oak Hill United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bonnie F. King, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Hill Memorial Gardens.
