Burt, 69, of Louisville, Ky., formerly of Oil City, died Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, in Audubon Hospital, Louisville. Born May 20, 1935, in Oil City, he was the son of the late Leo Wade and Elva Van Guilder Burt. Mr. Burt was a retired bill poster for Neagle Outdoor Advertising Co. in Louisville. Surviving are his wife, Susan Shaw Burt; and three children, Robin Strong and Robert and Randy Burt, all of Louisville; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He also is survived by four sisters, Louise Proper, Ruby Deeter, Joann Tenza and Dorothy Frankenberger, and a brother, Jack Burt, all of Oil City; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mary Jane Buzzard Mary Jane Buzzard, 84, of New Bethlehem, died Friday evening, Sept. 17, 2004, in Clarview Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Sligo. Born Aug. 9, 1920, in Fairmount City, she was the daughter of Bird and Garnat Neiswonger Sherman. Mrs. Buzzard was a homemaker. She first was married in 1939 to Dart Ferringer, who preceded her in death. She then was married in 1967 to Harry Buzzard, also deceased. Surviving are four sons and their wives, Ken and Debbie Ferringer of Callensburg, Roy and Vicki Ferringer of Knox, Joe and Gladys Ferringer of Curllsville and Lee and Mary Ellen Ferringer of Widnoon; one daughter and her husband, Karen Sue and William Bowser of Rimer Hill; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She also is survived by four sisters. In addition to her parents and two husbands, Mrs. Buzzard was preceded in death by a son, Donny Ferringer; two sisters; and two brothers. Jackie Lee "Jack" Davis Jackie Lee "Jack" Davis, 58, of Laurel, Miss., formerly of Parker, died Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, in Forrest General Hospital, Hattiesburg, Miss., of injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Mississippi. He officially was listed as one of the victims of Hurricane Ivan as a tree was uprooted due to the storm and fell upon his car as he was operating the vehicle. Born Feb. 1, 1946, in New Bethlehem, he was the son of the late James LeRoy Davis and Catherine Elizabeth Kriebel Davis Garris. Mr. Davis was a 1964 graduate of the former Fairview Township-Karns City School District in Karns City. He earned a bachelor of science degree from William Carey College in Mississippi and he later earned a master of finance degree from the same college. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving with the Corps of Engineers with the U.S. Army. He was honorable discharged with the rank of captain. Mr. Davis, at the time of his accident, was employed as district manager with Pantry Oil Co. of Mississippi. He attended St. John Episcopal Church in Laurel. Surviving are his wife, Edith M. Sertik Davis of Laurel; one daughter, Mary Elizabeth Azbell of Laurel; two sons, Joseph Lee Davis of Dorchester, Texas, and Timothy Edward Davis of Gulfport, Miss.; and three grandchildren. He also is survived by his stepfather, C.O. "Red" Garris of Parker; his father-in-law, Walter Sertik of Parker; three sisters, Mary Pierce of Melvindale, Mich., Martha Cochran of Oil City and Helen Roosa of Anchorage, Alaska; five brothers James, Donald and Andrew Davis, all of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Matt Garris of Lincoln Park, Mich., and Mark Garris of Parker; and a number of nieces and nephews. Bertha Ashbaugh Hays Bertha Ashbaugh Hays, 85, of Emlenton, died Sunday morning, Sept. 19, 2004, in the Bear Creek Personal Care Home. Born Nov. 26, 1918, in Richland Township, Venango County, she was the daughter of Vern E. and Myrna Bashline Ashbaugh. Mrs. Hays attended the White Memorial School in Knox and Welch's Business College in Oil City. She retired after 30 years of service with Quaker State Refinery where she was the assistant to the export manager. Mrs. Hays was a member of the Salem United Church of Christ in Lamartine. She was married in 1981 to Walter Hays, who survives. Also surviving are one son, William R. Miller of Smethport; and two grandsons, Isaac Miller of Nashville, Tenn., and Jerod Miller of Smethport. Surviving also are one stepdaughter, Linda Heineman and husband, Karl, of Seneca; three stepsons, Michael Hays of Emlenton, Donald Hays and wife, Sally, of Baton Rouge, La., and Frederick Hays and wife, Carla, of Ocean View, N.J.; and four stepgrandchildren, Mila and Laura Heineman of Seneca and Emily and Sarah Hays of Ocean View, N.J. "Jack" Minich, 77, of 1091 Swartfager Road, New Bethlehem, died at 6:27 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh. Born Aug. 14, 1928, in Clarion County, Redbank Township, he was the son of James C. and Ellet Bowersox Minich. He served in the Korean War from 1951 to 1952 in the U.S. Army. He was wounded twice in action. Mr. Minich was an operating engineer and was a member of the Operating Engineers Local No. 66. He was a Protestant. Mr. Minich belonged to the Disabled Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 415 and the American Legion Post No. 354, both of New Bethlehem. He was a lifelong Republican and served as a committeeman of the Clarion County Republican Party. Mr. Minich was an avid outdoorsman and was a member and officer of the Clarion Gun Owners. He was married June 21, 1964, to Beverly A. Freedline, who survives. Also surviving are two sons and their wives, Thomas and Heidi Minich and James and Sherri Minich, all of New Bethlehem; one daughter and husband, Jackie and Michael Quinn of Mayport; and seven grandchildren, Michi Quinn, Michael J. Sampsell Sr. Robert E. Sampsell Sr., 60, of 927 E. Main St., Titusville, died unexpectedly at 8:15 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, in Hamot Medical Center, Erie, shortly after his arrival there. Born Oct. 26, 1943, in the Pioneer area of Cornplanter Township, Venango County, he was the son of the late Lloyd Sampsell Sr. and Nina Winger Sampsell. He attended the Oil City Schools. Mr. Sampsell formerly was employed by Asplundh Tree Service of New York and J&M Manufacturing of Franklin. He was a member of the Polish National Alliance Group 2031 and Cleo J. Ross American Legion Post No. 368, both of Titusville. He was a former member of the Bruce Shorts VFW Post No. 5958 and Loyal Order of Moose Lodge No. 84. Mr. Sampsell enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, telling stories, working on cars, gardening and hunting. He was married in Titusville June 7, 1983, to Miriam Mullett, who survives. Shadle, 64, of 395 Ridgeview Road, Cooperstown, died at 11:45 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, at her home of complications related to a long battle with cancer. Born March 19, 1940, in Pittsburgh, the Ingram-Crafton area, she was the daughter of the late John V. "Bud" and Beulah B. Allen Brown. After graduating from Crafton High School, Mrs. Shadle obtained her nursing degree from Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, and worked in the nursing field for many years. She ran a successful home-based business and served as a hospice volunteer. Mrs. Shadle also taught classes for the Red Cross. She enjoyed snow skiing, tennis, competitive running, gardening and spending time with her family. Mrs. Shadle was devoted to the Christian faith, which carried her through the recent difficult times. She was married Sept. 1, 1962, to Donald W. Shadle, who survives. They had just celebrated their 42nd wedding anniversary. Surviving, in addition to her husband, are a daughter, Susan Nelson and husband, Kenneth, of Girard; two sons, Scott Shadle and wife, Tania, of Franklin and Stephen Shadle and wife, Cindy, of Pittsburgh; and seven grandchildren, Christopher, Noah, Sydney, Samuel, Sophie, Paul and Sullivan. She also is survived by one sister, Sarah Lottes and husband, Robert; and one brother, John W. Brown and wife, Fatima. Born Oct. 10, 1930, in Perryville, he was the son of the late Charles "Art" and Alice Mae Clark Texter. He was a graduate of White Memorial High School in Knox. Mr. Texter was employed for many years by the Pennsylvania Game Commission prior to retiring in 1978. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and was an excellent carpenter. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, particularly his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and his beloved dogs, Ginger and Baby. He liked to play blue grass music on his guitar. Mr. Texter was married Jan. 24, 1951, to Shirley Huffman, who survives. They celebrated 53 years of marriage this past January. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two daughters, Sherry Smith of Anchorage, Alaska, and Brenda Wagner and husband, Jerry, of Knox; a son, Steven D. Texter and wife, Laura, of Knox; and eight grandchildren, Laurie Smith of Butler, Nathan Smith of Clarion, Jeremy Wagner of Knox, Jessica Wilshire and husband, Scott, of Cranberry and Thomas Jasko, Katie Texter, Erin Texter and Ronald Paul Texter, all of Knox; and two great-grandchildren, Drew and Quentin of Butler. He was an avid bowler, enjoyed working on cars, hunting, collecting movies and four-wheeling. Surviving are his mother, Barbara J. Webber of Plumer; a brother, Daniel L.
