Buzard Gloria F. Buzard, 76, of 977 Main St., Rimersburg, died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004, in Clarview Nursing & Rehabilitation Center near Sligo following a brief illness. Central Ave., Titusville, died at 10:12 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004, in Titusville Area Hospital. Born Jan. 4, 1931, in Oil City, he was the son of George and Laura Howe Harper. He was a graduate of Oil City High School. Mr. Harper was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the U.S. Army. He was self-employed for many years as a barber in Titusville and also had worked for several years at Jones & Laughlin Steel in Oil City. Mr. Harper was a member of the Bruce Shorts Post No. 5958, VFW and was a member of the Cleo J. Ross Post No. 368, American Legion. He enjoyed sports and was a fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers. He enjoyed golfing and spending time with his family. He was married in Cherrytree Aug. 7, 1954, to Arlene Zerres, who died April 11, 2004. Surviving are two sons, John G. Harper and Alan J. Harper and wife, Alice, all of Naples, Fla.; two daughters, Louise McMahon and husband, Michael, of Titusville and Mary Whitehill and husband, Mark, of Pleasantville; and two grandchildren, Nicki McMahon and her fiance, Benjamin Thompson, of Wilmington, N.C., and John McMahon of Titusville. He also is survived by three brothers, James Harper and Glenn Harper, both of Oil City, and Ernest "Doc" Harper of Auburndale, Fla.; a sister, Mrs. William (Ethel) Smith of Dempseytown; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Harper was preceded in death by three brothers, Thomas, George and Robert Harper; and two sisters, Mrs. Anna Cordaro and Esther Harper. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the Gordon B. Garrett Funeral Home, 303 N. Washington St., Titusville. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the funeral home with the Rev. Dale Hallaway, pastor of the East Troy Community Church, officiating. Hedglin, 94, of Mercer Road, Franklin, died at 11:47 p.m. Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, in The Caring Place, Franklin, where she had resided since March 25, 2003. Born Feb. 9, 1910, in Franklin, she was the daughter of Fred and Effie Bennehoff Ferson. Mrs. Hedglin was married in Ripley, N.Y., Sept. 5, 1925, to W. Carl Hedglin Sr., who died June 18, 1983. They were married for 58 years. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, crafts, flower gardening and especially family activities. She was an avid deer hunter, hunting with her family until age 85. Mrs. Hedglin was a lifelong Christian and was the oldest member of Grace United Methodist Church of Rocky Grove where she attended Sunday school regularly as long as her health permitted. She was a member of the Polk Quilters, P.A.R.S.E., AARP, Grace Church Keenagers and the Frenchcreek Homemakers. Mrs. Hedglin served for 30 years on the Frenchcreek Township Election Board. She retired in 1971 from Polk Center after 21 years of service as a dietary supervisor. Surviving are two sons and their wives, James E. and Lois Hedglin of Johnstown and Carl Hedglin Jr. and Patti of Franklin. Her 14 grandchildren are James E. Hedglin and wife, Cheryl, Susan Urbassig and husband, Mike, and Carl Hedglin III, all of the Franklin/Polk area; Robert Hedglin and wife, Carla, and Stacy Mohanty and husband, Viz, of Pittsburgh; Stephen C. Hedglin and wife, Debbie, of Pensacola, Fla., Sarah Timko and husband, John, of Gillette, Wyo., Cheryl Mihalaki and husband, Matt, W. Craig Hedglin and Saundra Dee Suppes and husband, Michael, all of Johnstown, Richard Hedglin and wife, Darlene, of Meadville; Valerie A. Smith and husband, Brett, of Maryland, Tecia M. Rasar and husband, Joe, of Windsor, S.C., and Holly Read Osborn of Warren, Ohio. She also is survived by one granddaughter-in-law, Kathy Read Newtzie and husband, Ron, of Franklin; 20 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. Kagle Dardanella R. Kagle, 84, of 106 S. Main St., Seneca, died at 7:45 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004, at her home, which she made with her niece, Pam Shepard, and great-niece, Mary Dardanella Boal. Born July 6, 1920, in Clarion, she was the daughter of Thomas T. and Dorothy K. Schimp Reddinger. She was a 1938 graduate of Clarion High School. Before her marriage, Mrs. Kagle worked for Owens-Illinois. After her marriage, she worked for the Derrick Publishing Co. and last for Seneca Printing, retiring July 20, 1984. Mrs. Kagle was a member of St. Stephen Church, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, the Rosary Society, Legion of Mary, Gallivanters and the YWCA. She was married June 26, 1954, to Wayne R. Kagle, who died Aug. 7, 1993. Surviving are two sisters, Marian L. Edwards of Waterson and Dorothy E. Klepfer and husband, Howard, of Clarion; two brothers, Thomas F. Reddinger of Shippenville and John A. Reddinger and wife, Virginia, of Rural Valley; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Kagle was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Reddinger. There will be no visitation. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday in St. Stephen Church with the Rev. Jeffery Noble, pastor, presiding. Interment will be in Sunset Hill Memorial Gardens. McFate, 90, died in his home in Oil City Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, after a brief illness. Mr. McFate was a native of Oil City and the senior partner of the law firm of McFate, McFate & McFate. He was in active practice for more than 66 years. He was a member and past president of the Venango County Bar Association and was a member of the Pennsylvania and Federal Bar associations. He was in general practice before all state and federal courts. He specialized in corporate matters, trusts and estate work. For many years, Mr. McFate was a member of the board of directors of Quaker State Corp. and served as general counsel and as a member of the executive committee. He was an administrative trustee of the Dr. and Mrs. Arthur W. Phillips Trust, a private charitable foundation and, as a member, assisted in establishing multiple scholarship programs for various colleges and universities in Pennsylvania, primarily for students from Venango and neighboring counties. In 1993, he was honored by the Boy Scouts as Man of the Year. Mr. McFate was a graduate of Oil City High School, the University of Michigan and the University of Michigan Law School, where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and Michigauma Honor Society. He was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church of Oil City and served as president of the board of trustees and chairman of the building committee of the church. Mr. McFate was a veteran of World War II, drafted as a private in the field artillery and later becoming a captain, serving as a Trial Judge Advocate at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base until discharged. He was active in community affairs and at various times served on the boards of the Oil City Hospital, YWCA, Oil City Club, Salvation Army and Wanango Country Club. He had been president of the Adelphoi Club and was a former long-term member of the Franklin Club and the Oil City Elks Club. Mr. McFate was a member of Masonic Lodge 710, Zem Zem Temple and various Masonic orders. His father was the late Earl C. McFate, a banker and past president of the Oil City National Bank, Farmers-Merchants Trust Co. of Greenville and Citizens Banking Co. of Oil City. His mother was the late Agnes Gault McFate, also an Oil City native. Mr. McFate was married to Carol Graham McFate, a native of Emlenton. who died May 19, 2003. Surviving are one son, Harry G. McFate of Mesa, Ariz., his daughter-in-law, the former Margaret Kiskadden, and their son, Mark H. McFate, a senior at Brophy College Preparatory High School in Phoenix, Ariz.; a brother, John E. McFate and sister-in-law, Mary M. McFate; and many nieces and nephews. Arrangements have been made with the Morrison Funeral Home for a memorial service to be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Second Presbyterian Church, Reed Street, Oil City. The family will greet friends and associates in the church immediately following the service. Interment will be conducted after the church service at the family memorial cemetery located at the McFate Farm in Plumer. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to one's favorite charity. Elizabeth I. McLaughlin Elizabeth I.J. McLaughlin, 83, of Bay Street, Cape Vincent, N.Y., formerly of Oil City, died Monday evening, Sept. 20, 2004, in Carthage Area Hospital, Carthage, N.Y., where she had been a patient since June 25. Born July 6, 1921, in Oil City, she was the daughter of George Y.W. and Esther J. Latshaw Ritchie. She was a 1939 graduate of Oil City High School and attended Welch's Business College, Oil City. Mrs. McLaughlin was a secretary for the Tuberculosis Society for Venango, Clarion and Forest counties. She was married in Wallace Memorial Chapel at Westminster College, New Wilmington, March 18, 1967, to Fred B. McLaughlin. Mrs. McLaughlin and her husband lived in Oil City until moving in 1975 to Cape Vincent. In 1981, they moved to Dexter, N.Y., where her husband died in 1985. She then returned to Cape Vincent. Mrs. McLaughlin was a member of the Order of Eastern Star No. 491, North Side Improvement League; Cape Vincent Senior Citizens and Cricket Club of Cape Vincent. Surviving are two daughters, Karen Williams of West Chester, Pa., and Alide Bates of Goose Creek, S.C.; and two stepchildren, Jean Balko of Virginia Beach, Va., and Fred D. McLaughlin of Pasadena, Calif.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. McLaughlin was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Nikki Rex; and a brother, William Ritchie. There will be no calling hours or funeral services. Ada Maye Markwell Pence Ada Maye Markwell Pence, 88, formerly of Hendersonville, died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004, in St. Paul Homes, Greenville, where she had resided for several years due to failing health. Born Sept. 12, 1916, in Morehead, Ky., she was the daughter of Luanna and David Owen Markwell. Mrs. Pence was a member of the Hendersonville United Methodist Church. She was a homemaker who enjoyed spending time with her family. Her faith in God sustained her through many illnesses and losses in her life. Mrs. Pence was married Jan. 30, 1935, to Charles Russell Pence, who died Jan. 9, 1984. Surviving are one daughter, Ina Marie Goodwin of Oklahoma City, Okla.; four sons, Charles D. Pence of Oklahoma City, Okla., George C. Pence of Mentor, Ohio, and Edward J. Pence and Roger G. Pence, both of Stoneboro; 16 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. She also is survived by one brother, Ivan Markwell of Morehead, Ky. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Pence was preceded in death by two daughters, Mrs. George P. (Anna Jane) Elder and Betty Jean Pence; one son, William Owen Pence; six brothers, Hinton Markwell, Russell Markwell, Levi Markwell, William Markwell, Carl Markwell and Ervin Markwell; and two sisters, Martha Jane Curtis and Ina Wagoner.
