Franklin St., Titusville William J. Smith, Ross Street, Clarion John R. "Jack" Stanford, 428 Lobaugh Hill Road, Rimersburg The Rev. John F. Weibel, Coudersport, formerly of Franklin and Oil City Bernadine Helen Garner Bernadine Helen Garner, 83, of Highland Oaks, Shippenville, formerly of Knox and Kossuth, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, in Clarion Hospital. Born Dec. 13, 1921, in Oil City, she was the daughter of Walter S. and Mabel Johnson Webb. Mrs. Garner was a homemaker. She was married to Robert W. Crankshaw, who is deceased, and to Raymond Garner, also deceased. Surviving are one daughter, Wanda McDaniel and husband, Robert, of Kossuth; and four grandchildren, Bruce, Ernie, Steve and Brian McDaniel; and nine great-grandchildren. She also is survived by four brothers; Walter Webb Jr. and wife, Ann, of Albuquerque, N.M., Ray Webb and wife, Jane, of Lamartine, and Jim Webb and wife, Erna, and Carl Webb and wife, Dorothy, all of Kossuth; and two sisters, June Horner and husband, Ivan, of Clarion and Lois Runninger and husband, Jim, of North Fort Myers, Fla. In addition to her parents and husbands, Mrs. Garner was preceded in death by one sister, Irene Reed. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at a later date. The Goble Funeral Home, 330 Wood St., Clarion, is in charge of arrangements. Daniel D. Hynes Daniel D. Hynes, 62, of Buffalo, N.Y., formerly of Oil City, died of cancer Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005, in the Veterans Hospital in Buffalo. Born Nov. 5, 1942, in Oil City, he was the youngest of five sons born to James Edward and Loretta Gertrude Quinn Hynes. He was a 1960 graduate of St. Joseph High School. He went to Buffalo where he graduated in 1964 from Canisius College with a bachelor of arts degree in economics. He also was a basketball manager at Canisius and remained an avid Canisius fan through the years. After graduation from college, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served in Vietnam and attained the rank of first lieutenant. During his life, Mr. Hynes held various sales positions in Buffalo working for Lever Brothers, Queen City Liquor Corp., DuPont Mobile Homes, Palmer Green and Spectrum Home Mortgage, which later became Marine Midland Mortgage Department and then HSBC Mortgage Division. He recently retired due to illness from HSBC Mortgage Division, where he worked as a mortgage loan officer since 1985. Mr. Hynes returned to Oil City frequently, including annual trips for the Oil Heritage Week one-pitch softball tournament. He was instrumental in bringing teams from Buffalo to compete in the tourney, and his friends from Buffalo forged lasting relationships with his friends from Oil City. "Danny's greatest achievements are the impact he made on the people in his life. He was an individual who made a tremendous amount of friends in his life, serving as a tremendous example by never giving up when you are down," his daughter, Sarah Bertei, said. Surviving are two daughters, Sarah Bertei and husband, Michael, and Martha Hynes, all of Charlotte, N.C.; and two grandsons, Chad and Zachary Bertei of Charlotte, N.C. He also is survived by two brothers, Dr. Robert Hynes and wife, Kathleen, of Seattle, Wash., and William Q. Hynes and wife, Lee, of Shippensburg. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hynes was preceded in death by two brothers, James Hynes and Donald Jerome Hynes. Mr. Hynes was cremated at his request. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday in the gathering space of St. Joseph Church, Oil City. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday in the church with Msgr. John W. Swoger, pastor, presiding. Burial of his cremains will follow in Calvary Cemetery. The Reinsel Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements. Memorials are being accepted to start a college fund for his grandchildren, in care of Mrs. Sarah Bertei, 12309 McAllister, Park Drive, Charlotte, N.C., 28277. Gladys C. Lamberton Gladys C. Lamberton, 90, of 501 S. Franklin St., Titusville, died at 5:38 p.m. Monday, Jan. 24, 2005, in Titusville Area Hospital. Born March 14, 1914, in Titusville, she was the daughter of C.L. and Elizabeth McDonald Grove. She was a 1931 graduate of St. Titus High School, Titusville, and had attended Mercyhurst College,. Erie. Mrs. Lamberton was co-owner of C.L. Grove Plumbing & Heating. This family-owned business began in 1914 and was operated for more than 75 years. She was a member of St. Titus Church and the Titusville BPW. Mrs. Lamberton was an accomplished pianist and played the organ and piano at St. Titus Church. She was married in Erie Feb. 8, 1937, to James A. Lamberton, who died April 14, 1992. Surviving are four children, Jane L. Lamberton of Titusville, Thomas C. Lamberton and wife, Judy, of Mercer, J. Mark Lamberton and wife, Judy, of Phoenix, Ariz., and Joyce Covell and husband, Arthur, of Pleasantville; seven grandchildren, David Allen Lamberton and wife, Valerie, of Mechanicsburg, Debra Shaffer and husband, Drew, of Mercer, E. Ashley Lamberton of Raleigh, N.C., Lindsey K. Lamberton of Phoenix, Ariz., Alison B. Covell of Midway, Ky., Arthur A. Covell of Hagerstown, Md., and Andrew L. Covell of Erie; and two great-grandchildren, Joshua and Danielle Lamberton of Mechanicsburg. She also is survived by a sister, Eleanore Meier and husband, Paul, of Hope Sound, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the Gordon B. Garrett Funeral Home, 303 N. Washington St., Titusville. The Rev. Gregory Passauer will lead the recitation of the rosary at 2 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home. Smith, 65, of Ross Street, Clarion, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, in Clarion Hospital. Born March 22, 1939, in Clarion, he was the son of Fredrick and Frances Reinsel Smith. Mr. Smith worked for 32 years at Brookville High School and also was self-employed as a carpet installer. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Clarion, the Knights of Saint George and the Clarion American Legion. Mr. Smith enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a member of the Wild Turkey Federation, Ducks Unlimited and the National Rifle Association. He was married May 26, 1962, to Rose Niederriter. who survives. Also surviving are one son, Bret Smith of Laredo, Texas; two daughters, Dawn Zimmerman and husband, Clair, of Hegins and Tina Conrad and husband, Ron, of Sigel; and two grandchildren, Devon and Kelsey Zimmerman. She also is survived by two brothers, Robert Smith of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Charles Smith of North Huntington; and one sister Frances Frost of Clarion. Mr. Smith was proceeded in death by his parents and two sisters, Mary Alice Flick and Pat Barr. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Goble Funeral Home in Clarion. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Immaculate Conception Church, Clarion, with the Rev. James G. Faluszczak presiding. Interment will follow in Cedarview Memorial Park in Strattanville. Memorials may be made to the Clarion Free Library or to the American Cancer Society. John R. "Jack" Stanford John R. "Jack" Stanford, 67, of 428 Lobaugh Hill Road, Rimersburg, died at 11 p.m. Monday, Jan. 24, 2005, in UPMC Montefiore Hospital, Pittsburgh. Born Feb. 19, 1937, in Rimersburg, he was the son of John C. and Effie Mae Holibaugh Stanford. Mr. Stanford was employed as a high-lift operator for 29 years by C&K Coal Co., Sligo. He retired in 1994. He was a member of the Rimersburg Rod & Gun Club. Mr. Stanford was a Protestant. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. Mr. Stanford was married Nov. 11, 1955, to the former Gail Yates, who survives. Also surviving are a son and his wife, John "Jack" and Joyce Stanford of Emlenton RD; three daughters and their husbands, Brenda and Robert Pinson of Clarion and Karen and Richard Vasbinder and Kristy and Jeffrey Conner, all of Rimersburg; grandchildren, Melissa Semanco, Mrs. Eric (Jennifer) Hawk, Mrs. Kenneth (Jamie) Bray, Mrs. Todd (Jackie) Peterson, Joyce Stanford and Chad Shernock, Mrs. Leon (Julie) Shreffler, Tori Vasbinder and Ashley and Elizabeth Conner; and 12 great-grandchildren. He also is survived by three sisters and their husbands, Shirley and Eugene Slaugenhaup and Sally and Joe Striet, all of Ellwood City, and June and Joe Westerly of Wampum; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Stanford was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kara Vasbinder; a brother, Larry Stanford; two infant sisters; and two infant brothers. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Varner Funeral Home of Rimersburg. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home with the Rev. Mark Deeter, pastor of the Wildcat Wesleyan Methodist Church near Rimersburg, officiating. Interment will follow in Rimersburg Cemetery. The family suggests memorial donations be made to the Wildcat Wesleyan Methodist Church, Rimersburg, 16248. Rev. John F. Weibel Rev. John F. Weibel, 58, pastor of St. Eulalia Catholic Church in Coudersport and a former Oil City resident, died unexpectedly of natural causes Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005. Rev. Weibel taught and coached at Venango Christian High School and was assigned to St. Stephen Church during his many years in Oil City. The highlight of his coaching career came in 1980 when he led the VC girls basketball team to the Class A state championship, the first PIAA state title ever for a Venango County basketball team. Born Jan. 28, 1946, in Orange, N.J., he was the son of the late Elmer and Gertrude Gallagher Weibel. Rev. Weibel was a 1964 graduate of Bayley-Ellard High School. He attended Gannon College and St. Mark Seminary in Erie from 1964 to 1966 and Christ the King Seminary at St. Bonaventure University in Olean, N.Y., from 1966 to 1972. Rev. Weibel was ordained a priest on May 11, 1972, at St. Peter Cathedral in Erie by Bishop Alfred M. Watson. His home parish was St. James in Springfield, N.J. Rev. Weibel was assigned to the faculty of Venango Christian in 1972, and he was named assistant headmaster there in 1981. He taught theology and English at VC and was active in overseeing school fund-raisers. Rev. Weibel also served for a period of time as Venango Christian athletic director. He coached the VC girls basketball team for many years, and in addition to the 1980 state championship he guided the girls to numerous other successful seasons and playoff appearances from the late 1970s through the 1980s. He also coached golf, junior high football and ninth-grade and junior varsity boys basketball. A running enthusiast, the Rev. Weibel enjoyed jogging along West First Street in Oil City. Rev. Weibel remained with Venango Christian until 1993. In addition to his teaching duties, he served as diocesan youth moderator for Venango, Clarion and Crawford counties. He served as weekend assistant at St. Patrick Church, Franklin, from 1972 to 1977, and at St. Stephen Church, Oil City, from 1977 to 1993. Rev. Weibel was assigned in 1993 as pastor of St. Eulalia Church, where he remained until his death. He was an avid New York Mets and St. Bonaventure basketball fan. Surviving is a sister, Kathleen Weibel, of New Jersey. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at St. Eulalia Church, 6 E. Maple St., Coudersport. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday with Bishop Donald Trautman of the Catholic Diocese of Erie officiating. Interment will follow in St. Eulalia Catholic Cemetery, Coudersport. Memorial contributions may be made to Venango Catholic High School, 1505 W. First St., Oil City, 16301.
