Second St. Stacey Sue Estes, Grove City Phyllis Gandolfi, Clarion Marion J. Goetz, Franklin Chester E. "Sonny" Hartzell, Knox Shawn A. McCall, Parker Kenda R. Mosier, Oil City Susan J. Barrett Pence, Harrisville Thomas A. Schettler, Oil City Delphine W. Thompson, Franklin Ruth Beatrice Bodner Ruth Beatrice Bodner, 89, and Oil City native and a resident of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., since 1972, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005. Born on December 13, 1915, in Oil City, she was the daughter of Harry Wiley and Bertha Hogue Heckathorn. Mrs. Bodner was educated in Cranberry and Oil City area schools. She was gifted musically having played piano by ear, studied voice, and conducting her own local radio program during the 1940s. She was fondly known to many as Mom Bodner or Aunt Ruth. Mrs. Bodner was employed in Oil City at Brody's, Freems, the City of Oil City and the Oil City National Bank. She also served 10 years in the mission field for the Presbyterian Church at Sheldon Jackson Junior College, Sitka, Ala., Ganado Mission, Ganado, Ariz., and Menaul School in Albuquerque, N.M. Mrs. Bodner worked from 1971 until her retirement in 1988, at Maplebrook School, Amenia, N.Y., where the old wing of Evans Hall was named in her honor June 6, 1977. She was the recipient Oct. 29, 2004, of the Serena Merck Memorial Award for Innovation in Practice, an international award presented by the National Association of the Dually Diagnosed, for her compassionate work in this field. She was married to Frank Bodner in 1933. Mrs. Bodner is survived by an only daughter, Shirley R. Henry and her husband, Burl, of Poughkeepsie; two grandchildren, Lawrence E. Henry of Brewster, N.Y. and Nancy L. Brown and her husband, Steven, of Berwyn; two great-granddaughters, Karen E. and Emily K. Brown of Berwyn; a niece, Joan E. Bowman and her husband, Regis, of Natural Bridge Station, Va.; and two cousins, Harold Rugh and his family of Oil City and Harlan Rugh and his family of Franklin. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a sister, Vera Bodner and her husband, Andrew; and a brother, Harry Heckathorn and his wife, Vivienne. Visitation was held Saturday and Sunday at Allen Funeral Home, 1605 Main St., Pleasant Valley, N.Y. Funeral services were held Sunday at the funeral home with the Rev. Mike Gerhardt, pastor of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, officiating. Graveside interment services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Church Hill Cemetery, Licking Township, Clarion County, with the Rev. Robert D. Charles 'Putsy' Cassatt Charles "Putsy" Cassatt, 71, of 118 W. Main St., Sheffield, died at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, at the Erie Veterans Affairs Medical Center following a brief illness. Mr. Cassatt was born Sept. 28, 1933, in Barnett Township, Forest County, to the late Darwin and Mary Jane O'Donell Cassatt. He lived five years in Sheffield and formerly lived in Marienville where he worked for the Marienville Glass Plant, from which he retired. Mr. Cassatt was a former district and post commander for Marienville VFW Post 1424. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Korean War. Mr. Cassatt enjoyed hunting and fishing. Surviving are two sons, Blaine Cassatt of Erie and Keith Cassatt of Jamestown; two daughters, Becky Rockwell of Tiona and Doris Cassatt of Jamestown; one brother, Robert Cassatt of Idaho; and 11 grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Mr. Cassatt was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Gadley Cassatt; and five brothers, John, Darwin, Patrick, Jim and an infant. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Sheffield Sports Boosters or to the American Cancer Society. Robert C. Coulter Robert C. Coulter, 79, of 7 E. Second St., Oil City, died at 2:45 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at his home. Born Dec. 19, 1925, in Oil City, he was a son of the late Louis E. Coulter Sr. and Hazel Davis Coulter. Mr. Coulter lived in Oil City his entire life, attending Oil City schools. He held numerous jobs as he was growing up and last was employed at Viscos Yarn Manufacturing in Meadville for 15 years. Mr. Coulter served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Surviving are a daughter, Helen M. Gifford of Titusville; three sisters, Evelyn "Sis" DeShong of Titusville, Ellen Bond and Shirley Saunders, both of California; a brother, James Coulter of Swanton, Vt.; two grandsons, Jim Oakes of Franklin and Mark Oakes of Philadelphia; Mr. Coulter's companion with whom he lived, Esther Winters Robinson of Oil City; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Coulter was preceded in death by a brother, Lewis E. Coulter Jr. There will be no visitation and it was Mr. Coulter's wish to be cremated. Stacey Sue Estes Stacey Sue Estes, 45, of 1037 Barkeyville Road, Pine Township, Grove City, died at 9:18 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, at her residence following a sudden illness. Born Nov. 5, 1959, in Grove City, she was a daughter of Gaylord Clyde and Alyce Carl McCarl and lived at Barkeyville Road for 20 years. She was a 1978 Grove City High School graduate. Ms. Estes worked at Polk State Center, Polk, where she was a personal care assistant for seven years. She also worked for the office of personnel management in Boyers. Ms. Estes was a member of the Church of the Nazarene, Grove City, where she was active as a quiz team coach, a caravan guide, junior church, nursery and leading women's Bible study. She also was affiliated with the Christian Motorcycle Association, Pennsylvania Prayer Warriors, Chapter 425, and worked with Sandy Lake Volunteer Fire Department. Surviving are one sister, Sherry Alldredge and her husband, Wayne, of Taylor, Ariz.; two brothers, Lanny McCarl of Columbus, Ohio, and Kim I. McCarl and his wife, Sandy, of Mercer; and several nieces and nephews, one great-niece and a host of friends and extended family. Ms. Estes was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister, Brenda Gay McCarl. There will be no public visitation. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Church of the Nazarene, Grove City, with the Rev. Terry Wyman, pastor of the church, officiating. Phyllis Gandolfi Phyllis Gandolfi, 82, of Clarion, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005, at the home of her daughter, Sheila Rivers, in Knox. Born Oct. 24, 1922, in Sligo, she was the daughter of Arthur Roy and Maude Daugherty Davis, both of whom preceded her in death. Mrs. Gandolfi worked 20 years at the Sylvania Plant in Brookville and also had a 20-year career as a library assistant at Clarion University of Pennsylvania's Carlson Library. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Clarion where she was active in the Chimers, the funeral dinners team, Circle Group and sewing group. Her hobbies included traveling, gardening, reading and crossword puzzles. She was married April 10, 1943, to John Gandolfi, who preceded her in death Nov. 28, 2000. Surviving are two daughters, Sheila Rivers and her husband, David, of Knox, and Sandra Lytle and her husband, Robert, of Homer City; five grandchildren, Sandra and Jeffrey Rivers, Shannon Blum, Jamie Short and Tom Lytle; and six great-grandchildren. Mrs. Gandolfi was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Goble Funeral Home, Clarion. Goetz, 81, of 316 9th St., Franklin, died at 8:55 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh. Born Jan. 16, 1923, in Rockmere, she was a daughter of the late Edgar L. and Vera Porter Ely. She graduated from Franklin High School and was a lifelong homemaker who loved being at home and cooking and baking for her family. Mrs. Goetz was married April 4, 1942, to William O. Goetz, who preceded her in death July 14, 2000. Surviving are two children, William M. Goetz and his wife, Kathleen, of Franklin, and James L. Goetz and his wife, Kathleen, of Fort Myers, Fla.; and five grandchildren, Jennifer L. Goetz and her husband, William P. Montague, of Denver, Matthew W. Goetz of Denver, John J. Goetz and Melinda Gahr of Pittsburgh, Kari K. Keller and her husband, Allan, of Tampa, Fla., and Gregory W. Goetz of Fort Myers, Fla. Also surviving are two brothers, Paul O. Ely and his wife, Janet, of Homosassa Springs, Fla., and Ralph H. Ely and his wife, Ora Mae, of Topton; a brother-in-law, Howard Goetz of Erie; one sister, Sarah E. McNutt of Rancho San Diego, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Helen Ely of Wesleyville; and 18 nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents are husband, Mrs. Goetz was preceded in death by two brothers, Norman E. Ely and Ebin S. "Sonny" Hartzell Chester E. "Sonny" Hartzell, 71, of St. Mark Church Road, Knox, died at 8:38 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at UPMC Northwest, Seneca. Born Oct. 24, 1933, in Clintonville, he was the son of George E. and Mary Slater Hartzell. At the age of 7, he moved with his family to a farm on St. Mark Road where he most recently lived. Mr. Hartzell served with the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1957. He was stationed in Germany where he served with CIA personnel at the Berlin Wall. He worked in the forming department of Knox Glass from 1957 until the plant closed in 1987. Mr. Hartzell then worked for Glenshaw Glass in Etna until 1995. From 1995 until his health failed in April 2004, he managed Selker Brothers Gulf Station at Interstate 80, Exit 53. Mr. Hartzell enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, horses and dogs. He first was married to Elva Beichner, who survives. He married again in October 1985 to Margaret Grantz, who also survives. Also surviving is his father of Mequon, Wis.; three sisters, Shirley Moyar of Knox, Jean Stahlman and her husband, Mervin, of Knox, and Michelle Etzel and her husband, Steve, of Mequon, Wis.; two daughters, Debra Kahle and her husband, John, of Knox, Bonda Reddinger and her husband, Larry, of Knox; a son, George Hartzell and his wife, Brenda, of Pine City; three step-children, Randy Bell and his wife, Beverly, of Knox, Jeff Bell and his wife, Kim, of Alabama, and Tonia Yockey and her husband, David, of Freeport; 13 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and a number of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Hartzell was preceded in death by his mother in 1983; a brother, John "Butch" Hartzell in 1968; and an infant son, Francis. McCall, 39, of Parker, died Friday evening, Jan. 7, 2005, in Hovey Township, Armstrong County, of injuries suffered in a multi-vehicle accident on Route 268 between Foxburg and Emlenton. Born May 19, 1965, in Butler, he was a son of Robert and Julia "Babe" Rottman McCall of Parker, who survive. Mr. McCall was a 1984 graduate of Allegheny-Clarion Valley High School in Foxburg. A heavy-equipment operator most of his life, he was employed most recently for Fox Estate renovation operation in Foxburg. Mr. McCall was of the Protestant faith. In addition to his parents of Parker, Mr. McCall is survived by two daughters, Brigette McCall and Brooke McCall, both of Clyde, N.Y.; his companion, Holly Larkin of Parker; one brother, Robert J. McCall and his wife, Carol, of Vestal, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Dennis Dean McCall in March 1980. Mosier, 86, formerly of West Front Street, Oil City, died at 4:50 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at the Oil City Presbyterian Home. Born May 1, 1918, in Oil City, she was a daughter of the late Kenneth Hall and Carolyn Stoughton Hall Danko. Mrs. Mosier was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church. She enjoyed playing bingo and crafting ceramics. She was married April 3, 1942, to Ronald Mosier, who preceded her in death April 2, 1991. Surviving are a son, James H. McElroy and his wife, Bonita, of Erie; three daughters, Ruth Drummond of Port Ritchey, Fla., Donna Lee Brown and her husband, Robert, and Kendalynne L. Snyder and her husband, Mark, all of Oil City; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother, Harry K. "Bud" Hall of Oil City; a sister, Alice Hajduk of Oil City, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a stepfather, George Danko; a son, Harold E. "Butch" McElroy; and a brother, Robert Hall. There will be no visitation and services were held at the convenience of the family. Interment will take place in Rynd Farm Cemetery. Barrett Pence, 59, of 133 Jones Road, Irwin Township, Harrisville, died at 10:45 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005, following an extended illness. She had lived in the area most of her life and lived from 1964 to 1971 in Lancaster County. Born March 14, 1945, in Eau Claire, Butler County, she was a daughter of James F. Hanna and Geraldine Parks. Mrs. Pence most recently worked in the housekeeping department of United Community Hospital, Grove City. She was affiliated with the Church of God of Prophecy in Nectarine. Mrs. Pence graduated from the Victory Joint High School in 1963, Irwin Township, which is now part of the Franklin Area School District. She was a member of WIBC of Mercer County. Mrs. Pence enjoyed collecting angels, reading, writing and spending time with her family. She was married Sept. 2, 1967, to Terry Barrett, who preceded her in death March 2, 1996. She married again Aug. 21, 1998, to Martin L. Pence, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Jeremy J. Barrett of Harrisville; a foster daughter and her husband, Kathleen "Buffy" Donegan and her husband, Chris, of New Castle; her stepmother, Violet Hanna of Harrisville; two sisters, Lois J. Adams and her husband, Clair A., of Harrisville, and Joy E. Bickel and her husband, Paul L. of Galesburg, Ill; and four brothers, James P. Hanna and his wife, Martha J., of Franklin, Roger D. Hanna and his wife, Betty, of Girard, Ohio, Timothy P. Hanna and his wife, Linda, of Kennerdell, and Stephen F. Hanna and his wife, Leona B., of Harrisville. In addition to her first husband, Mrs. Pence was preceded in death by her mother Jan. 13, 1947 and by her father Dec. 12, 1996; and infant son, David R.; and a brother, David R. Hanna. Thomas A. Schettler Thomas A. Schettler 76, of 225 Ahrensville Road, Oil City, died at 3:30 a.m. Saturday Jan. 8, 2005, at his home following an illness that started in September. Born March 22, 1928, in Oil City he was the son of the late John and Anna Lauer Schettler. He was a 1945 graduate of St. Joseph High School. A corporal in the U.S. Army, Mr. Schettler served during the Korean Conflict in Great Britain. He was a member of St. Stephen Church. Mr. Schettler enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, vacationing with his family, and his Volkswagen Beetle. After his retirement in 1991, he started to furnish his home and the homes of his children with pieces of custom made furniture - made by a craftsman with a lot of love and toil. Mr. Schettler first worked for Oilwell Supply, then later at Asel's Cabinet Shop in McClintockville, which he later purchased. He retired as owner/operator in January 1991 after 31 years in the trade. He was married on Oct. 7, 1950, to the former Patricia A. White of Siverly in Our Lady Help of Christians Church, Oil City. The late Rev. Francis Kaltenbach officiated. In addition to his wife, Mr. Schettler is survived by six children and their spouses, Thomas P. and Kathleen A. Schettler of Ahrensville, Mary J. and Alvin Fish of Oil City, Mark J. and Beverly A. Schettler of Seneca, William J. and Kimberly A. Schettler of Ahrensville, Patricia A. and Richard L. Snyder of Oil City and Stephen A. "Sam" and Joan Schettler of Oil City. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, Elizabeth Fish, Matthew Fish, Christopher Fish, Natalie Schettler, Michael Schettler, William Schettler, Wesley Schettler, Julia Snyder, Reed Snyder, and Hannah Schettler; one sister, Margaret Schettler of Sarasota, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Schettler was preceded in death by four brothers, Harold Schettler, John Schettler, Ray Schettler and Robert Schettler; and one sister, Catherine Metz. Thompson, 72, of Franklin, formerly of Clearfield, died at 3:08 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, in UPMC Northwest, Seneca, after a brief illness. Born Sept. 13, 1932, in Clearfield, she was the daughter of Clair D. and Mae E. Lumadue Wilsoncroft. Mrs. Thompson attended public schools in Clearfield. She later attended Edinsburgh School of Nursing where she studied dentistry, psychiatry and medicine. She also attended the Miracle Revival Fellowship, where she received her ordination and minister's license in 1972. Mrs. Thompson enjoyed reaching out to others and spreading God's word, leading Bible studies and participating in mission trips to help others. In her earlier years, she worked as a nurse and doctor's assistant at various hospitals in Clearfield, Pittsburgh and Florida. After receiving her ordination, she and her husband ministered at several evangelistic churches in the Clearfield area, and most recently in Oil City. She often led a worship service at the civic center in Curwensville. Mrs. Thompson was a member of the Women's Aglow organization, a faith-based women's group in Ohio. Most recently, she attended the Abundant Life Fellowship Church in Franklin. She was married Sept. 27, 1959, in Kingsland, Ga., to Harold A. Thompson, who survives. He is a resident at the Oil City Presbyterian Home. Mr. Thompson, a retired naval officer, was also very active with his wife in their evangelistic and music ministry. Also surviving are two children, Debra M. Laird of Seneca and James L. Thompson of Franklin; nine brothers and sisters, Milford J. Wilsoncroft of West Decatur, Wanda Lee Peoples of Curwensville, Wilma Lou Welch of Olanta, Bonita Welker of Clearfield, Sandra Gill of Olanta, Chester Wilsoncroft of Salem, W.Va., Larry Wilsoncroft of Olanta, Andy Wilsoncroft of Clearfield and Audrey Little of Clearfield; 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and numerous niece and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by a grandson, Matthew "Michael" Marcinko Conley in 2003.
