Garbarino, Clarion Edward Earl Shields, 2360 Rockland Road, Cranberry Hubert Jack Bartlett Hubert Jack Bartlett, 87, a former Oil City resident and a 1938 graduate of Oil City High School, died Friday, June 22, 2007, at an Alzheimer's care facility in Ormond, Fla. He served a tour of duty in the U.S. Navy during World War II, then returned to Oil City where he lived with his family for many years while working as a patternmaker at Oil Well Supply. Arthur E. Berko Arthur E. Berko, 60, of 47 Taylor Drive, Reedsville, Pa., died at 11:06 a.m. Tuesday, July 10, 2007, in Milton S. Hershey Medical Center 's Surgical Intensive Care Unit. Born April 12, 1947, in Bronx, N,Y., he was the son of the late Eugene and Hannah Cohen Berko. He was a Vietnam veteran of the U.S. Navy and was a member of the elite Silent Service/Submarine Service. He was a sonar technician who served on board the USS Simon Bolivar, on which his son later served, the USS Abraham Lincoln, USS Senate, USS Trout and the Submarine Tender USS Canopus. Mr. Berko worked for Macy's Department Store and Minit Mart in Belleville. He previously was employed in sales for Metropolitan Life, Bell Telephone and Southern Bell Telephone where he retired. He was a past member of the Burnham Lions Club. Mr. Berko was an avid bowler in several leagues throughout his life. On Jan. 5, 2004, he bowled a perfect game of 300. He also was an animal lover. He was an old salt and a fisherman and loved his New York Yankees. He was a best friend for many people in his life. Mr. Berko was married April 27, 1968, to Linda L. Schulze, who survives. Also surviving are his mother-in-law, Betty J. Schulze of Lewistown; a son, Andrew J. and wife, Yvonne El Berko of Berlin, N.J., and grand-pup, Max; a daughter, Sarah R.R. Berko Eroh and husband, Justin T. Eroh, of State College; grandchildren, Sydney Kenepp of Yeagertown and John C. Snyder of Oil City; sister and brother-in-law, Diane and Kenneth Nosonowitz of Barefoot Bay, Fla.; brother and sister-in-law, Bernard, deceased, and Glenda Berko of California, children, Hanna, Beth and Ronald; nephew and wife, Phillip and Diane Nosonowitz of New Rochelle, N.Y., and children, Sasha, Daniel and Christine; niece and husband, Lisa and Mark Doris of New Rochelle, N.Y., and children, Lauren Varian and Marissa Varian; brother-in-law and wife, Robert and Joanne Schulze of Shillington and children, Lisa, Robert and Steven; sister-in-law, Peggy A. and Floyd R. Milhan of Egg Harbor Township, N.J., and children, Christopher and Matthew; brother-in-law, David L. and Lynn Schulze of Reedsville and children, Meagan and Avery. Family and friends will be received from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday in the home of David and Lynn Schulze, 28 Estella Drive, Reedsville. James Earl Dotterer Jr., 64, of 1595 Lawsonham Road, Rimersburg, died Wednesday morning, July 11, 2007, in his residence following an extended illness. Born July 17, 1942, in Scrubgrass Township, Venango County, he was the son of James Earl and Helen Patterson Dotterer. He served in the Air Force from 1961 to 1964. Mr. Dotterer was a welder by trade and retired June 29, 2007, from Miller Welding of Brookville. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and camper. Mr. Dotterer was a member of the Rimersburg Rod and Gun Club, enjoyed four-wheeler riding, gardening and spending time with family. He was of the Protestant faith. Mr. Dotterer was married Aug, 20, 1999, to Sherry LaRaye Halstead, his loving wife and best friend who survives. Also surviving are four children, Roxane Brink of Kittanning, Teresa Surratt of Clarion, Daniel Dotterer and fiancée, Michele Smerker of Clarion and David Matthew Dotterer and wife, Beverly, of Fisher; one stepdaughter, Ginni Overly and companion, Delton Barger, of Harrisville; nine grandchildren, Lindy Lipps, Lucas Leis, Tyana Dotterer, Cameron Davis, Zach Dotterer, Haley Dotterer, Codie Dotterer, Jessie Dotterer and Alista Dotterer; and numerous cousins, aunts and uncles. Mr. Dotterer was preceded in death by his parents. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in the Richard D. Hillis Funeral Home, Main Street, Rimersburg. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home with the Rev. Kenton Shaw, a retired minister and cousin of Mr. Dotterer, officiating. Military honors will be accorded at the funeral home by members of the VFW and American Legion Ceremonial Squad of Rimersburg. A private burial will follow in Big Bend Cemetery, Venango County. George B. Garbarino George B. Garbarino, 93, a well-known Clarion businessman, died Wednesday afternoon, July 11, 2007, in St. Vincent Health Center, Erie. The Robert V. Edward Earl Shields, 83, of 2360 Rockland Road, Cranberry, died Tuesday morning, July 10, 2007, at his home. Born March 18, 1924, in Oil City, he was a son of Orville J. and Mabel M. Hause Shields. Mr. Shields was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps in the European Theater of Operations. He worked at Joy Manufacturing, retiring in 1989. Mr. Shields attended the Heckathorn United Methodist Church. He enjoyed traveling all over the United States, especially Alaska, and spent winters in Florida. On Aug. 12, 1989, he married the former Isabelle McCauley Irwin, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Danny Shields and friend, Cathy King, of Franklin; five daughters, Pat Rosenburg and husband, Fred, of Cheyenne Wyo., Kitty Richards and husband, Doug, of New York, Marge McFetridge and husband, Pat, of Oil City, Terri Croyle and husband, Bud, of Rocky Grove and Deana Beach and husband, Larry, of Oil City; three stepchildren, Jerry Irwin and special friend, Stacy Fox, of Plumer, Kay Armagost and husband, Bob, of Oil City and Karen Flannigan and husband, Dan, of Oil City; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild. He also is survived by two brothers, Lewis Shields and wife, Marge, of New Castle and Peter Shields and wife, Nadine, of Arizona. In addition to his parents, Mr. Shields was preceded in death by his first wife, Audrey Shields; an infant son; three sisters; three brothers; and a grandson, Matt McDougal.
