    3. The Derrick, July28, 2007: Jack Daum, Payson, Ariz., formerly of Oil City Teresa A. "Terri" Emery, Oil City Stephen F. Fento Jr., 26 Plum St., Oil City Paul George Mursch, Forest Drive, Summerville Karl May Schurr, Fisher Jack Duane Daum, 83, a former Oil City resident, died Friday, July 13, 2007, at his home in Payson, Ariz. Born Sept. 3, 1923, in Oil City, he was the son of the late William and Jane Daum. Mr. Daum excelled in writing, acting and politics at Oil City High School. After graduating from high school in 1941, he entered the Army Air Corps where he served until 1945. He later attended the University of Washington and the University of Alaska. Mr. Daum was known best for his work as a newspaperman, political strategist and speech writer. He worked for newspapers in Alaska, Washington, D.C., California and New Mexico during a career that spanned more than 40 years and included two Pulitzer Prize nominations. He wrote for the Santa Fe Reporter in New Mexico in the 1960s and for a short time published his own paper, The Challenger. As a political strategist he managed successful campaigns for candidates in the Territorial Legislature of Alaska, as well as for New Mexico's governor David Cargo. He worked in Washington, D.C., for 16 years where he served as an aide, speech writer and campaign manager for Rep. Manuel Lujan Jr. He wrote speeches for numerous politicians including Presidents Nixon, Ford and Reagan. Mr. Daum retired to Tesuque, Ariz. in 1985, where his family had lived since 1964. He was an avid fisherman, poet and storyteller. He was a generous person with a sense of humor and adventure that was appreciated by all who knew him, and his thirst for knowledge was with him until the end. Mr. Daum was enormously proud of his children and great-grandchildren. He was married for 54 years to Alice Daum, and she preceded him in death. Mr. Daum is survived by his sister, Jean Mahoney of Phoenix, Ariz; eight children, 26 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by 10 brothers and sisters. Mr. Daum's body was cremated, and a private family service will be held at a later date. Teresa A. "Terri" Emery, 52, of Oil City, died at 7:40 p.m. Thursday, July 26, 2007, at the Golden Living Care Center in Oil City after an extended illness. Born Jan. 15, 1955, in Oil City, she was a daughter of Joan M. Martin Makowski and the late Frank J. Makowski. She attended St. Joseph Grade School in Oil City and was a 1972 graduate of Oil City Senior High School. Mrs. Emery had previously been employed by PennDOT and the Oil City School District. She was a member of St. Joseph Church in Oil City. Mrs. Emery was a friend of the Oil City Library, and she was an avid reader. She also enjoyed traveling and exercising. She was married in St. Joseph Church to William R. "Moose" Emery on Feb. 4, 1978, and he survives. Mrs. Emery is also survived by one son, Todd J. Emery of Cleveland, Ohio; her mother, Joan M. Makowski of Oil City; and three sisters and their spouses, Ellen Makowski of Oil City, Debbie and Rich Frantz of Pittsburgh, and Kathy and Doug Ekstrom of Oil City. Also surviving are one nephew; three nieces; her father-in-law, Robert Emery of Oil City; her reading partner, Dave Koerner of Oil City; and special friends Melissa Persing, Phil Thompson and Sue George. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Stacey Ann Emery; and her mother in-law, Patsy Emery. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. today and from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday at the Reinsel Funeral Home in Oil City. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with Msgr. John W. Swoger, pastor at St. Joseph Church, presiding. A memorial Mass for Mrs. Emery will be held at a later date to be announced. Internment will take place in Calvary Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Fento Jr., 72, of 26 Plum St, Oil City, died at 6:35 a.m. Friday, July 27, 2007, at UPMC Northwest in Seneca, surrounded by his family. Born Aug. 24, 1934, in Oil City, he was a son of Steve Fento Sr. and Harriett Swartzlander Fento. Mr. Fento served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He retired from Oilwell Supply where he was a crane operator. Mr. Fento was an active member of the Free Methodist Church of Oil City. He enjoyed playing golf. On Aug. 30, 1958, he married the former Sandra Beach, and she survives. Also surviving are five children, Steve Fento and wife, Colleen, of Oil City, David Fento and wife, Carolyn, of New York, Tim Fento and wife, Danielle, of Oil City, Kaylene Cartney and husband, Patrick, of Titusville, and Terry Fento and wife, Carolyn, of Oklahoma; 16 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Janet M. Haniwalt of Franklin and Wanda McDaniel of Maryland; four sisters-in-law, Linda Miller, Lori Bly and her husband, Fred, all of Oil City, Diane Worley and husband, Bo, and Joan Sanford, all of Louisiana; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Rose Tarr; and three brothers-in-law, Tim Beach, Bob Miller and Daniel Beach. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Morrison Funeral Home in Oil City and from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the Free Methodist Church of Oil City. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Free Methodist Church of Oil City with the Rev. T. Christopher Hill officiating. Interment will be in Rockland Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Free Methodist Church of Oil City. Paul George Mursch Paul George Mursch, 84, of Forest Drive, Summerville, died Thursday, July 26, 2007, at Clarion Hospital. Born March 12, 1923, in Crafton, he was the son of the late William H. Mursch and Elva Hill Mursch. He was married to Audrey Rex in 1948, and she preceded him in death in 1992. Mr. Mursch was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Navy. He served on the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown and served as a radioman and tailgunner, flying in the Curtiss SB2C Helldiver dive bombers. Mr. Mursch worked at Owens-Illinois Glass Plant in Clarion for 35 years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and he was an assistant Scoutmaster for Troup 49 of the Limestone Boy Scouts for many years. He was also a member of the American Legion and the National Rifle Association. Mr. Mursch was a member of Kingsville United Methodist Church. He is survived by two daughters, Janet L. Hagan and husband, Frank, of New Bethlehem, and Paula Mursch of Sewickley; one son, Fred W. Mursch of Summerville; and four grandchildren, John Paul Mursch of Summerville, Amy J. Hoffman and her husband, Kenneth W., of New Bethlehem, Mark A. Hagan of New Bethlehem and Lisa A. Hagan of New Bethlehem. Also surviving are two great-grandchildren, Sky A. Hoffman and Tristen A. Hoffman of New Bethlehem; and one brother, William Mursch of Tavarres, Fla. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Marion Rider and Ruth Gammie. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Goble Funeral Home and Crematory, 330 Wood St., Clarion. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The Rev. Saxman of Kingsville United Methodist Church will officiate. Interment will follow at Cedarview Memorial Park in Strattanville. Karl Max Schurr Karl Max Schurr, 76, of Fisher, died early Thursday morning, July 26, 2007, at Clarion Hospital. Born Feb. 28, 1931, in Bellefontaine, Ohio, he was the son of the late George Schurr and Zylpha Shoots Schurr. He worked on his family's farm near Bellefontaine and graduated from Zanesfield High School in 1949. Mr. Schurr entered the U.S. Army in 1950 and served in the Korean War in the Tenth Corps, 196th Field Artillery. After being honorably discharged from the Army in 1952 with the rank of sergeant, Mr. Schurr continued his education at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, earning an undergraduate degree in 1956 and a master's degree in 1957. He met the former Ruth Rosa at Bowling Green, and he married her in 1956. Mr. Schurr went on to earn a Ph.D. in biology at the University of Minnesota. He then took a position at Bowling Green as a professor of biology, and he taught there for 30 years. Mr. Schurr's research focused on agricultural pest control and the environmental monitoring of water quality. He and his wife retired to western Pennsylvania in 1992. Mr. Schurr was an outdoor enthusiast, enjoying hunting and fishing. He was active in environmental and conservation causes, and he was a member of the Seneca Rocks Audubon Society and the American Chestnut Foundation. He was also a member of Strattanville United Methodist Church and served on the Millcreek Township Planning Commission. Mr. Schurr is survived by his wife of 51 years, Ruth Schurr; a son and daughter-in-law, Theodore Schurr and Dana Wormer of Philadelphia; a daughter, Sarah Ruden of Philadelphia; a daughter and son-in-law, Gretchen and John Lugthart and two grandchildren, Emily and Peter Lugthart, all of Rocky Face, Ga.; one sister, Sarah Georgiana "Jan" Bidlack of Geneva, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews and their children. Friends will be received from 2 to 3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 6, at Strattanville United Methodist Church. A memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. that day at the church with the Rev. Julie L. Applegate, the church pastor, presiding. Memorials may be made to Rivers Unlimited of Ohio or American Rivers. The Robert V. Burns Funeral Home in Clarion is handling arrangements.
