"Buck" Walter, getting it right Rebecca Katherine Ekas Rebecca Katherine Ekas, 88, of Karns City, died at 3:45 p.m. Sunday, July 29, 2007, at Whispering Acres Personal Care Home, Chicora, following a brief illness. Mrs. Ekas was born Aug. 23, 1918, in Philipston, the daughter of the late Edward and Mary Hiwiller Milliren. She graduated from Rimersburg High School, Class of 1937. She lived in the East Brady area until moving to Karns City in 1951. Mrs. Ekas was a member of the Karns City United Methodist Church. She was a homemaker and lived for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was well-known for her pie baking. In her younger days, she enjoyed snowmobiling and fishing in Canada with her friends. Later in life, she enjoyed putting puzzles together. Mrs. Ekas was married April 29, 1939, in Cumberland, Md., to Harry W. Ekas Jr., who preceded her in death Jan. 22, 1985. She is survived by a daughter, Judy Dunn and her husband Thomas of Karns City; two sons, Harry Daniel "Dan" Ekas and his wife Beverly of Karns City and Thomas C. Ekas of Lyndora; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; a brother, Edward Milliren and his wife Alene of Rimersburg; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Ekas was preceded in death by five brothers, Howard, Charles, Richard, John "Jack," and David Milliren; and two sisters, Ruth "Boots" McKee and Nelda Milliren. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Richard D. Hillis Funeral Home, Petrolia. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home with the Rev. Richard F. Rowe, retired Presbyterian pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in the Bear Creek Cemetery, Petrolia. Waddell Ganoe, formerly of 935 Grandview Road, Oil City, died at 12:04 a.m. Monday, July 30, 2007, in UPMC Northwest, Seneca. Born Jan. 12, 1924, in Rouseville, she was the daughter of the late William and Maude Sharrow Schaming. She graduated in 1941 from Oil City Senior High School. Mrs. Ganoe had been employed in her earlier years by Armstrong-Colliers and Bell Telephone Co. She was a member of St. Joseph Church, the Rosary Society and the Primetimers and sang alto in the church choir for many years. Mrs. Ganoe was a founding member of the Cast Offs and Shindiggers Square Dance clubs. She enjoyed traveling with the Gallivanters, gardening, doing crafts, playing bingo, homemakers club and the companionship of her cat. She first was married in St. Venantius Church June 7, 1947, to Robert J. Waddell, who died Oct. 5, 1950. She then was married in St. Venantius Church May 7, 1955, to Paul L. Ganoe, who died Jan. 21, 1985. Surviving are two children and their spouses, Joseph and Judy Waddell of Spartansburg, S.C., and Rosemary and Michael Griep of Oil City; two grandchildren, Mary Jane Williams of Missouri and Lauren Elizabeth Johnson of South Carolina; and two great-grandchildren, Cailean and Connor Williams of Missouri. She also is survived by one sister, Dorothy Snyder of California; and several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the Reinsel Funeral Home. Gesin, 54, of Emlenton, died suddenly Sunday afternoon, July 29, 2007, in his residence. Mary Frances Griffin, 91, of Butler Street, Clintonville, died Saturday, July 28, 2007, in Grove City Medical Center after a brief illness. Born Jan. 22, 1916, in Venango County, Irwin Township, she was the daughter of John Franklin Walter and Emma Pearl Martin Walter. Mrs. Griffin graduated in 1934 from Grove City High School. She was a devoted housewife and mother who enjoyed spending time with her family and taking care of her flowers. Mrs. Griffin was a member of the TOPS Club in Clintonville and Card Club in Clintonville. She was a member of the Union Presbyterian Church in Clintonville. Mrs. Griffin was married Aug. 14, 1946, to Earl W. Griffin, who survives. They would have celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary this year. Surviving, in addition to her husband, are two children, Jack D. Griffin and wife, Joyce A., of Kennerdell and William E. Griffin and wife, Gloria M., of Clintonville; six grandchildren, Jeffery C. Armstrong of Grove City, Daryl J. Armstrong of Harrisville, Melissa M. Linn of Muncy, Rebecca L. Carter and husband, Chris, of Franklin and Joshua T. Griffin and Aleah D. Griffin, both of Clintonville; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Griffin was preceded in death by a son, Walter C. "Butch" Armstrong, Dec. 19, 2005; two brothers, Clell and Lee Walter; and her former husband, Harold E. Armstrong. Heckman, 89, of 25 Lake St., Stoneboro, died at 10 a.m. Monday, July 30, 2007, in St. Paul Homes, West Salem Township, after an extended illness. Born July 21, 1918, in Utica, she was the daughter of Floyd B. and Grace A. Morrison Heffern. She was a 1935 graduate of Utica High School. Mrs. Heckman worked for 15 years as an LPN at Mercer County Home and Hospital and also worked for nine years at Polk State School and Hospital until she retired in 1980. She was a very active member of the Stoneboro United Methodist Church and was a member of the Ready to Serve Class. Mrs. Heckman was a member of the Stoneboro Water Lily, Rebekah Loge No. 380 and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Stoneboro Volunteer Fire Co. She loved playing cards and belonged to numerous card clubs and also enjoyed playing bingo. She loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them. Mrs. Heckman was married Dec. 3, 1938, to Charles J. "Chuck" Heckman, who died Oct. 16, 1982. Surviving are three sons and their wives, Charles F. "Chuck" and Betty Heckman of Stoneboro, Paul E. "Ed" and Fran Heckman of Utica and Frederick L. and Jean Heckman of Sandy Lake; a daughter-in-law, Barb Heckman of Stoneboro; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. She also is survived by one sister, Irene Marsteller of Mooresville, N.C. Martha Slabaugh Miller, 73, of 392 Roberts Road, Sandy Lake, formerly of Hartville, Ohio, died at 11:55 a.m. Monday, July 30, 2007, at home following a short and intense battle with cancer. Born Oct. 29, 1933, in Hartville, Ohio, she was the daughter of John D. and Amelia Byler Slabaugh. Mrs. Miller was a loving mother and a creative homemaker. She enjoyed reading, needle crafts and outdoor activities including gardening, flowers and birds. She was deeply committed to the Lord and giving in support of missions. She was the wife of Ura E. Miller, owner of Miller & Sons Construction Co. of Sandy Lake. They were married April 19, 1958, and he survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Joel (Ruth) Mast of Cochranton; two sons, James Miller and wife, Sandy, of Utica and Mark Miller and wife, Tanya, of Sandy Lake; six granddaughters; and one grandson. She also is survived by one brother, Clarence Slabaugh and wife Velma, of Hartville, Ohio; and one sister, Mrs. Lloyd (Mary) Kauffman of West Jefferson, Ohio. Ronald Paul Nevel Ronald Paul Nevel, 54, of Clarion, formerly of Parker, died suddenly at 4:15 p.m. Sunday, July 29, 2007, of injuries sustained in an ATV accident near Clarion. Born Dec. 17, 1952, in Butler, he was the son of Paul E. and Lillian Marie Phillips Nevel, who survive in Parker. He was Protestant by faith. Mr. Nevel recently had been employed by Saylor's Farms near Clarion. Prior to recent employment, he was employed as a truck driver with TexasDOT, PennDOT and North American Van Lines. He was a member of the Moose Lodge of Clarion and was a former social member of the VFW in Parker. Surviving, in addition to his parents of Parker, are his wife, Melissa Helene "Missy" Caton Nevel, whom he married Feb. 14, 2007; three sons, Ronald Paul Nevel Jr. at home, Michael Nevel of West Middlesex and Steven Nevel and wife, Jessica, of Harrisville; four grandchildren, Terra Jean, Steven David, Kaitlyn and Michael Nevel; his mother-in-law, Linda Zurcher and husband, James, of Harrisville; and stepmother-in-law, Norma Caton of Cranberry Township. He also is survived by one brother, Bruce Nevel and wife, Amy, of Harrisville; four sisters, Linda and Nancy Nevel of Butler, Lois Robinson and husband, Gary, of Richmond, Ky., and Rita Thompson and husband, Tim, of Saxonburg; and a number of nieces and nephews. Glenn William Shaffer Glenn William Shaffer, infant son of Daniel and Jessica Nace Shaffer of Middlesex Township, Valencia, died Sunday evening, July 29, 2007, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh. The infant was born June 28, 2007, in Pittsburgh. Surviving, in addition to his parents, are two sisters, Laurianne and Morgan Shaffer at home; maternal grandparents, Suzanne and Mitchell Nace of Beaver County; paternal grandparents, Craig and Sandra Shaffer of Tionesta; maternal great-grandmother, Eileen Nace of Boyertown; paternal great-grandmother, Mary Haniwalt of Franklin; and aunts, uncles and cousins. Terwilliger, 80, of Eberhart Road, Chicora, died at 5 p.m. Sunday, July 29, 2007, at Life Care Hospitals, Pittsburgh, following a brief illness. Born Oct. 22, 1926, in East Brady, she was the daughter of the late Victor E. and Gladys McIntyre Clark. Following the death of her mother, her father married Irene V. Johnson. Mrs. Terwilliger grew up and resided in Rimersburg until the late 1950s when she moved to Chicora after her husband, the late Clair V. Terwilliger, and his family purchased the United Block Company. She later assisted her husband in the operation of the business. Mrs. Terwilliger also worked at the Clarion Glass Plant for several years in the 1950s prior to the move to Chicora. She was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and a past member of the Eastern Star in Chicora and the Associated Artists in Butler. She loved to paint pictures, hunt deer in their camp near Cook Forest and spend time with her family and friends. Mrs. Terwilliger especially enjoyed numerous outings with her daughters and granddaughters. She will be desperately missed by her family. She was married June 25, 1949, in Rimersburg, to Clair James Terwilliger who preceded her in death Feb. 9, 1986. Mrs. Terwilliger is survived by two daughters, Vickie McNany and her husband Ronald and Carol Berteotti and her husband Stephen, all of Chicora; four grandchildren, Josh and Chad McNany and Colby and Tim Berteotti, all of Chicora; a brother, V. Eugene Clark and his wife Alice of Rimersburg; four sisters, Betty Rickel of Girard, Ohio, Helen McClain and her husband Jack of Youngstown, Ohio, Kay Weaver and her husband Lee of Rimersburg, Joanne Seybert and her husband Don of Rimersburg; and several nieces and nephews.
