    3. The Derrick, September 19, 2007: Charles Lloyd Burdett, Stoneboro Joan Freas, South Seventh Avenue, Clarion Thomas Carson Osborn, Columbus, Ohio, formerly of Riverside Drive, Oil City Fred H. Strus, Girard, formerly of Oil City Charles Lloyd Burdett, 78, of 1061 Jackson Center-Polk Road, Hendersonville, Worth Township, Stoneboro, died at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2007, in UPMC Horizon, Greenville, after a brief illness. Born Oct. 11, 1928, in Rocky Grove, Venango County, he was the son of Herbert L. and Cora I. Kilgore Burdett. Mr. Burdett attended the former Sandy Lake High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the Occupational Forces in Germany. In early years, Mr. Burdett worked at Cooper-Bessemer in Grove City, Meadow Gold Dairy of Sandy Lake and Tassa Coal Co. and retired in 1990 from PennDOT where his co-workers knew him as "Burdie" after many years of service as a mechanic. Mr. Burdett was a member of the Lakeview United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir and served as a greeter. He was an avid gardener, loved working with his hands and could do most anything. Mr. Burdett loved music and played the fiddle, mandolin and guitar and used to play for square dances. He also loved to read and spend time with his family. He was married March 17, 1956, to Geraldine M. Glas, who survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Debra S. Burdett Schaefer and husband, David, of New York City; three sons, Michael L. Burdett and wife, Pamela, of Stoneboro, Russell D. Burdett and wife, Valerie, of Hadley and Thomas J. Burdett of Sandy Lake; three granddaughters, April, Kathleen and Jessica Burdett. He also is survived by one brother, William Burdett and wife, Shirley, of Stoneboro. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Esther Weaver and Louella Hamler. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the Scott A. Black Funeral Home, 99 Franklin St., Stoneboro. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the funeral home with the Rev. James G. Young, pastor of Methodists United in Faith, and the associate pastor, the Rev. Susan Hoover, co-officiating. The interment and committal service will be held in Crestview Memorial Park, Grove City. Joan Freas, 89, of South Seventh Avenue, Clarion, died Monday, Sept. 17, 2007, in County Place Heathcare, Crossville, Tenn. Born Jan. 7, 1918, in Akron, Pa., she was the daughter of Lester and Lucy Matthews Kroh. Mrs. Freas worked five to seven years for Citizen's Trust Co in Clarion and worked three years for Clarion Area High School doing clerical work. She also was a homemaker. She was active in Girl Scouts, was on the Clarion Library Board for 10 years and was the organist for Grace Lutheran Church. Mrs. Freas was married July 10, 1941, to John E. Freas who preceded her in death March 24, 2005. Surviving are two daughters, Lucy J. Elder and husband, Timothy, of Mount Vernon, Ohio, and Florence Jane Pinkham and husband, George, of Clark Range, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Nathaniel Elder, Capt. Mitchell Elder, Darrick Elder, Amy Joann Yoder and Johnathan Pinkham; and seven great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Freas was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and Jack Kroh; and one sister, Jean Doverspike. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Goble Funeral Home & Crematory, 330 Wood St., Clarion, 16214. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Grace Lutheran Church with the Rev. Harold Jacobson officiating. Interment will be in the Clarion Cemetery. Thomas Carson Osborn, 81, formerly of Riverside Drive, Oil City, died Friday, Sept. 14, 2007, in Columbus, Ohio where he had lived for four years with his son. Born April 28, 1926, in Oil City, he was the son of Joseph and Nina Osborn. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II. Mr. Osborn was a member of the Oil City Moose Club and the Eagles Club. He was married Jan. 6, 1951, to M. Ruth Farrell who died in 2004. Survived are three children, Thomas J. Osborn and Karen Sue Osborn, both of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Robert C. Osborn and wife, Joyce, of Phoenix, Ariz.; grandchildren, Thomas D. Osborn and wife, Ruth, Eric Krause and wife, Beth, and Ruth, Joshua and Joanna Krause and Robert and Mathew Osborn; and great-grandchildren, Joshua Osborn, Kayle and Madelyn Krause. He also is survived by a sister, Jane Cummings of Oil City. In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Osborn was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald L. and Joseph M. Osborn. The family is planning a memorial graveside service in November in Oil City. Strus, 91, a resident of Pleasant Ridge Manor, Girard, formerly of Oil City, died at 11:45 a.m. Monday Sept. 17, 2007, in his residence. Born Aug. 18, 1916, in Oil City, he was the son of John and Martha Palycia Strus. Mr. Strus attended St. Joseph schools and was of the Catholic faith. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, serving with the 214th Anti Aircraft Artillery Group in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. Following the war, Mr. Strus moved to Erie where he worked as a machinist until he retired. Surviving are five nieces and nephews and their spouses, Thomas J. "Tim" Strus Jr. and his wife, Susan, of Oil City, James and Oi Strus of Severna Park, Md., Mary Mauro of Lower Burrell, Joyce and David Shull of Fairview and Julie Idzi of Oil City; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Strus was preceded in death by Thomas J. and Eileeen Strus Sr., Michael and Leo Strus, John and Anna Boczon and John and Catherine Idzi. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday in the gathering space of St. Joseph Church in Oil City. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday in the church with Msgr. John W. Swoger presiding. Internment will follow in Calvary Cemetery with full military honors provided by the V.E.T.S. Honor Guard. The Reinsel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
