There were hundreds of Henry Smiths in the era we are probing. Believe me, the military records down in the Carlisle, PA Army Museum (and archive) show an amazing number of men of this name. (The War College used to be there, may still be.) My greatgrandfather Henry Harrison Smith went by Harrison in his 6-month Second Independent Battalion militia unit and some non-legal documents. He married Maria E. Brecht whose mother and grandmother, Maria Schafen Brecht, were Marias. To avoid confusion, two of them went by Mariah as seen in the 1860 Fed Census. The Brechts spelled their name Breicht in land purchase and on one grave marker in the Licking(ville) cemetery, Farmington Twp. They came to Philadelphia in 1832 from Wurtemburg, Germany, and moved to Clarion County in 1839 just before the County was formed from Indiana and Venango Counties. I must tell him that I do not recognize any of the names he sent us for possible identification. Warren Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
