Senn, Carnes School Road, Seneca Yvonne Eileen Summerville, Rimersburg Joyce M. Birch Joyce M. Birch, 58, of 62 South White St., Brookville, died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2007, at Brookville Hospital. Born July 18, 1949, in West Virginia, she was the daughter of Walter R. Catron, who survives in Daphne, Ala., and the late Mary Frances Carroll. Mrs. Birch worked as a waitress at Truckstops of America in Brookville for more than 20 years. She enjoyed playing bingo and spending time with family and friends, especially her grandchildren. On April 2, 1966, in Fayetteville, N.C., she married Albert R. Birch, who preceded her in death Aug. 22, 2001. She is survived by two daughters, Valerie Dunham of Brookville and Aimee Carbaugh of Marienville; two nephews who she raised at home, Curtis and William Hankins, both of Brookville; numerous other nieces, nephews and cousins; a sister, Wanda Maye of Daphne, Ala.; two brothers, David Catron of St. Peters, Mo., and Scott Catron of Cartersville, Ga.; and five grandchildren, Mykayla Dunham, Cheyenne Carbaugh, Shawna Carbaugh, Shaylee Carbaugh and Savannah Whiteman. In addition to her mother and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Walter Catron, Jr.; a sister, Beverly Lynn Hankins; and an infant son, Michael Scott Birch. Burgard, 57, of 538 Atlantic Ave., Franklin, was pronounced dead shortly upon his arrival at 6:39 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, 2007, in the emergency department of UPMC Northwest, Seneca. Mr. Burgard was stricken suddenly at his home with an apparent massive heart attack. Born June 5, 1950, in Franklin, he was a son of the late Charles W. Burgard and Selena Jewell Barnes. He attended the Rocky Grove Area Schools and graduated in 1968 from Rocky Grove High School. For his working career, Mr. Burgard was employed as a steel worker and truck driver with the former Franklin Steel. He retired, following 20 years of service. Mr. Burgard was an avid NASCAR racing fan. He enjoyed traveling, and most especially traveling to the Daytona Speedway each year for its annual 500 race. He was an avid reader, with a particular fondness for Stephen King novels. He will always be remembered for his passion for Harley Davidson motorcycles and riding his own Harley as often as he could. Most especially, he enjoyed spending time with his family, in particular with his grandchildren. He was of the Protestant faith. Mr. Burgard was married on Sept. 1, 2000, in Franklin, to the former Tammy Snyder, who survives. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Sabrina Backer and her husband Brian of Huntersville, N.C.; his step-daughters, Amber Snyder of Franklin, Jamie Parker of York and Jessica Parker of Butler; and six grandchildren, Britton and Cambree Backer, Dominic Hatstat, Tyus and Jaylin Wood and Rashawn Washington. Also surviving are a sister, Musetta "Tubby" Latchaw of Franklin; and brothers, Arthur "Art" Simpson and his wife Diane of Nevada, Charles "Chook" Burgard and his wife Shirley, and Walter "Walt" Burgard and his wife Donna, all of Franklin; and many loving nieces and nephews. Joey Edwin Clonch Joey Edwin Clonch, 30, of 54 Pearl Ave., Oil City, died at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, 2007, in the home of his sister, Hilda Shontz. Armand A. "Tabby" Davis, 93, of Loomis Street Ext., Ripley, N.Y., died peacefully Saturday, Sept. 22, 2007, in the home of his sister, Mavorette Rater, in Ripley. Born May 22, 1914, in Warren, he was the son of William H. and Loretta Corbin Davis. Mr. Davis was a machinist for 35 years in Building 18 for General Electric, Erie, until his retirement in 1972. He loved the outdoors and served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in the early 1930s, fighting fires and making trails in Oregon, Montana, Washington, California and Idaho. For 25 years, Mr. Davis went on fishing trips with his buddies in Quebec, Canada. He loved to bowl, read and watch PBS programs when he could still hear well. He also loved to go to lunch and visit with his friends. Surviving are his daughter, Linda DeVries and husband, Larry, of Sherman, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Nick DeVries of Appleton, Wis., and Lindsay DeVries of Seattle, Wash.; and several nieces and nephews including Paul A. Rater of Buckeye, Ariz., and Clarence "Hank" Rater of St. Augustine, Fla., and others in the Oil City area. In addition to his parents, Mr. Davis was preceded in death by two brothers, Jean B. and Donald H. Davis; a brother-in-law, Clarence F. Rater; and a nephew, William F. Rater. Irene Harkleroad Keck Irene Harkleroad Keck, 86, of Distant, died in her residence early Friday morning, Sept. 28, 2007. Carrie Avonell "Avy" Mowry, 90, formerly of Mercer Street, Sandy Lake, died at 4:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 28, 2007, in St. Paul Homes, Greenville, after a period of failing health. Born Jan. 25, 1917, in East Randolph, N.Y., she was a daughter of the Rev. Charles C. and Rozella DeHaven Mohney. She was a 1934 graduate of Jamestown High School in New York and attended Grove City College. She managed the former Sanford's Drug Store of Sandy Lake for 17 years and also worked at the former McQuiston Jewelry Store of Sandy Lake for six years, retiring in 1982. For several seasons along with her husband, she operated the campgrounds for the Army Corps of Engineers at Shenango Dam and Tionesta Dam. She was a 50 year member of the former Sandy Lake Methodist Church, now Lakeview Methodist Church. She was an artist and loved to paint and for many years did much work locally. She was a member and past president of the Sandy Lake Women's Literacy Club, and was also a member of the Lakeview Music Club and the Sandy Creek Conservancy. On April 10, 1939, she married Merrill B. "Mern" Mowry, who preceded her in death May 29, 1996. Mrs. Mowry is survived by a daughter, Judith A. Arnold of Alexandria, Va.; a son, James M. Mowry of Mississippi; six grandchildren, William J. Mowry of Chesapeake Beach, Md., Jill A. Hoffman of Conestoga, Jennifer R. Arnold of Fairfax, Va., Melissa J. Williams of Charlotte, N.C., Meghan A. Arnold of Alexandria, Va., and Carrie D. Arnold of Charlotte, N.C.; four great-grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren; and one step great-great grandchild. Also surviving are a sister, Frances P. Parker of Akron, Ohio; and a brother, Dr. Joseph P. Mohney and his wife LaVerne of Johnstown. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Mowry was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Blanche Sollinger and Elizabeth Hariot Mohney; and a brother, Charles Raymond Mohney. "Skippy" Senn, 47, of Carnes School Road, Seneca, died Friday evening, Sept. 28, 2007, at his residence. The Hile-Best Funeral Home in Seneca, Cranberry Township, is in charge of arrangements. A full obituary will be published in Monday's Derrick. Yvonne Eileen Summerville, 80, of Rimersburg, died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2007, at Golden Living Center in Shippenville. Born Aug. 9, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Lloyd "Dewey" and Bernice "Bea" Kline Boltz of Rimersburg. She graduated from Union Joint High School in 1945. Mrs. Summerville was the prothonotary and clerk of courts for Clarion County from 1977 until her retirement in 1995. She served as the state president of that organization in 1987-88 - one of the only women to serve in that capacity. She also served on the state committee to write the procedure manual for those offices and took law classes at Clarion and Indiana universities. Prior to her political career, Mrs. Summerville was employed for 13 years as an elementary secretary for Union School District. In her earlier years, she served as a charter volunteer librarian for Eccles Lesher Memorial Library and a Sunday School teacher and superintendent. She was a member of the Jerusalem United Church of Christ of Rimersburg, where she had sung in the church choir. In recent years, she enjoyed participating in a local Bible study, the Eccles Lesher Library Book Club, and Clarion County Democratic Women. A devoted mother and grandmother, she was an avid reader and sports enthusiast. Other hobbies included cooking, painting, crafts, and any musical or sporting event in which her children and grandchildren participated. In short, her family was her life. She is survived by two sons, Rick and friend Rebecca Leas of Fairmont City, and Crist and wife Debb of Knox; two daughters, Lugene Crawford and husband Rich of Parker, and Suzanne Olszewski and husband Bill of Renfrew. Also surviving are five grandsons, Curtis and Adam Crawford, and Cody, Christian and Corbin Summerville; and two granddaughters, Danielle and Logan Olszewski. She was preceded in death by her parents. Friends will be received from noon to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, at the Varner Funeral Home in Rimersburg. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, at the Jerusalem United Church of Christ in Rimersburg, with Associate Pastor Korona Say and Senior Pastor Lonnie Wolford of the Park Hill First Church of God in West Freedom and Pastor Samuel Swick of Nevin Memorial United Church of Christ in Frogtown officiating.
