Schill, Venus Barbara Whitten, funeral and memorial set Charles Albert Bechtel Jr. Charles Albert Bechtel Jr., 57, of 109 Indiana Lane, Williamsburg, Va., a former Oil City resident, died at 8:05 p.m. Sunday, March 6, 2005, in the Hampton Sentara Caraplex, Hampton, Va., following an extended illness. Born July 4, 1947, in Oil City, he was the son of Ruth Hagadone Bechtel and the late Charles A. "Abe" Bechtel Sr. Mr. Bechtel attended St. Joseph Grade School and was a graduate of Venango Christian High School He was a Vietnam War veteran, serving 20 years in the U.S. Navy. Following his retirement, Mr. Bechtel took a position at the VA Hospital in Batavia, N.Y., until 1996, living there for 16 years. He then moved to Virginia where he took a position with Colonial Williamsburg. He was married in Oil City July 4, 1975, to former Oil City resident Jane Nesbit Koerner, who survives. Also surviving are his mother, Ruth H. Bechtel of Oil City; a daughter, Leah Marie Griffith of Destin, Fla.; a son, Joseph T. Sarbak of Montclair, N.J.; and three grandchildren, Austin Griffith, Conrad and Minyu Sarbak. He also is survived by one brother, William Bechtel of Oil City; four sisters, Alberta Nordstrom of Warren, Mary Hadaway of Ames, Iowa, Janet O'Neil and Doris "Dolly" Bechtel, both of Oil City; a sister-in-law, Mary Bechtel of Titusville; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his father, Mr. Bechtel was preceded in death by a brother, Larry Bechtel. There will be no viewing or visitation. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday in St. Joseph Church, Oil City. Committal will follow in Sunset Hill Memorial Gardens. Buzard, 86, of 157 Hideaway Lane, Rimersburg, died Sunday, March 6, 2005, in UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh, due to smoke inhalation from a fire in her residence Saturday morning. Born July 15, 1918, in East Brady, she was the daughter of James and Rose Bowser King. Mrs. Buzard was a member of St. Richard Roman Catholic Church in Rimersburg. She also was a member of St. Richard Ladies Quilters and the Lawsonham Methodist Church Quilters. She was a homemaker. In addition to quilting, she enjoyed sewing, crocheting and reading. Mrs. Buzard was married in East Brady April 26, 1946, to Edward R. "Cutty" Buzard, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter and her husband, Rae and Thomas Hoover of Rimersburg; two sons, John Buzard and wife, Nancy, of Rimersburg and James A. Buzard of Deltona, Fla.; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. She also is survived by a brother, Paul King of East Brady. Heckathorn Davis, 44, of 391 Cooperstown Road, Cooperstown, died at approximately 10:30 p.m. Saturday, March 5, 2005, in a motor vehicle accident on Route 322 in Victory Heights. Born Sept. 2, 1960, in Oil City, she was a daughter of JoAnn Russell Heckathorn and the late Guy Heckathorn. She was 1978 Cranberry High School graduate. Mrs. Davis had been employed as a dispatcher at the Sugarcreek Borough police station for a number of years and was a police communication officer with the state police barracks in Franklin at the time of her death. She was a member of Heckathorn United Methodist Church. Mrs. Davis enjoyed walking, exercising, riding motorcycles, Bible study and being with her dog, Jacob, who also was killed in the same accident. She was married Sept. 22, 1990, in her home by the Rev. Harry J. Rosenberg to Thomas Edwin Davis. He preceded her in death June 25, 2003. Surviving are her mother of Seneca; three stepchildren, Benjamin Lee Davis who is serving overseas with the U.S. Army, Elizabeth Ann Uskert and her husband, Matthew, of Wilmington, N.C., and Amber Nicole Davis of Seneca; and one brother, Richard Heckathorn and his wife, Charlene, of Franklin, and their children, Jodi, Nick and Jeremy and his wife, Samantha, and their daughter, Kailee. Born March 21, 1918, in Greensburg, she was a daughter of Michael and Kalliope Ascounis Manos. She was a Seton Hill College graduate. Mrs. Deligiannis was co-owner of Franklin Bottling Company with her husband from 1943 until 1985. The business was sold in 1985 to the Pepsi Cola Company. The mother of three sons, she served as a Cub Scout den leader and was a loyal spectator at Little League and Pony League ball games. She was married June 6, 1940, to Aristomenis "Manny" Deligiannis at Chicago's Edgewater Beach Hotel. He preceded her in death Feb. 23, 1999. Surviving are three sons, Robert and his wife, Rita, of Duluth, Ga., Michael and his wife, Sandra, of Franklin, and Constantine "Connie" and his wife, Bonnie, of Richmond, Va.; and six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother, Alex Manos and his wife, Marie, of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; and a sister, Aliki Mathas, of Miami Shores, Fla. Spring St., Titusville, died at 12:13 a.m. Monday, March 7, 2005, in Titusville Area Hospital following a brief illness. Born Feb. 23, 1920, in Titusville, he was the son of David J. and Catherine M. Strawbridge Dowling. He was a lifelong resident of Titusville and attended St. Titus Grade School and was a member of the class of 1939 at St. Joseph Academy. After high school graduation, Mr. Dowling worked in the maintenance department at Titusville Iron Works. Shortly before the start of World War II, he was transferred to the machine shop. In August 1943, Mr. Dowling volunteered to serve in the U.S. Navy. He served with the Seabees (CBMU 541-Construction Battalion Maintenance Unit) in the southwest Pacific Theater and was granted an honorable discharge Feb. 17, 1946, in San Pedro, Calif. After the war, he worked for various contractors in the Titusville area. He was a member of the Carpenters and Joiners of America Local No. 705 in Lorain, Ohio. Later he worked as a bricklayer in Cleveland and was a member of the Brick Mason and Plaster International Union (BM&:PIU) Local No. 5. He was a member of St. Titus Church. Mr. Dowling was married in the rectory of St. Titus Church April 7, 1951, to the former Edna Korb, who survives. They were married by the Rev. James F. Hopkins. From May 17, 1951, until his retirement Oct. 31, 1981, Mr. Dowling owner and operated Marsh Gauge Pole Co. During their retirement years, he and his wife enjoyed playing bridge and traveling to many far away and exotic places including China, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, Western Europe, Hawaii and Alaska. In addition to traveling, Mr. Dowling was an avid hunter and raised beagles. Mr. Dowling had a quick wit and the gift of story telling. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a brother, Gerald "Jerry" Dowling and wife, Polly, of Farrell; various sisters and brothers-in-law and countless nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, cousins and good friends. Mr. Dowling was preceded in death by his brothers, John Arthur, George and Louis; and sisters, Sr. Mary Camilla, RSM, Sr. Mary Marguer ite, RSM, Florence Butler, Frances Lindsay and Helen Barry. Zelma A. Evans Zelma A. Evans, 99, a resident of The Caring Place in Franklin for the last two years and a longtime Siverly resident, died at 2 a.m. Monday, March 7, 2005, at UPMC Northwest, Seneca, after an extended illness. Born Jan. 16, 1906, in Wallaceville, she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Bertha Miller Gesin, and lived in Oil City's Siverly neighborhood since she was 12. A homemaker, Mrs. Evans had been a telephone operator with the General Telephone Company in her earlier years. She attended the Willow Street Free Methodist Church. Mrs. Evans enjoyed baking and sewing and loved to be around her children and grandchildren. She was married June 18, 1937, in Maysville, N.Y., to Andrew M. Evans. He preceded her in death Dec. 5, 1981. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Raymond (Toby) Aikins of Rocky Grove and Mrs. Daniel (Janet) Boland of Loveland, Colo.; four grandchildren, Raymond Aikins Jr., David Aikins and his wife, Amy, Andrew Boland and his wife, Chesy, and Mark Boland; two great-grandchildren, Christian David Aikins and Elijah David Aikins; and several nieces and nephews. Frederick Everett Key Frederick Everett Key, 68, of Roswell, Ga., formerly of Oil City, died Saturday, March 5, in St. Joseph Hospital, Marietta, Ga., from complications due to transitional cell cancer. Born Jan. 14, 1937, in Brooklyn, Ohio, he was the son of Elmer A. Key and Frances L. Amsden. Mr. Key grew up in Oil City and attended Cranberry High School before moving to Lancaster where he attended Thaddeus Stevens Trade School, now the Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology. He worked for IBM for more than 30 years as a senior marketing support representative and later retired from MARCAM as a software consultant. He had a passion for woodcarving, enjoying many years as a member of the Southeastern Woodcarver's Association and later pursuing his love of woodcarving with close friends at the Smyrna, Ga., Senior Center. His talents as a woodcarver were appreciated by friends and family and he was a sought after instructor, hosting many classes in character carving. Mr. Key had a love of nature and the outdoors that included a love of gardening and landscaping. He especially enjoyed his koi pond, which he installed in the back yard of his home in Roswell, Ga. He was a founding member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Marietta, Ga., and worked tirelessly with the St. Vincent DePaul Society, organizing the annual Adopt-a-Family Program for needy families in the metro Atlanta area during Christmas time. Mr. Key was married for 46 years to the former Barbara Jean Houser of Lancaster. She died June 22, 2003. Surviving are two sons, James Richard Key of Canyon Country, Calif., and Thomas Patrick Key of Smyrna, Ga.; and a brother, Elmer Scott Key of Alpharetta, Ga. Knecht, 73, of 1007 Pioneer Road, Franklin, died at 5:27 p.m. Sunday, March 6, 2005, in UPMC Northwest, Seneca. Born March 17, 1931, in Cleveland, Ohio, he was the son of Albert E. and Charlotte L. Dietzel Knecht. He was a 1949 graduate of Cathedral Latin High School. He earned his BBA degree in 1956 from John Carroll University, Cleveland, and earned his MBA in 1975 from Youngstown State University. Mr. Knecht served in the U.S. Coast Guard during the Korean War. He was awarded the National Service Defense Medal for his valor. He relocated with his family in 1977 to the Franklin area where he was employed by Joy Manufacturing Co. as manager of applications support. He retired from Joy Jan. 1, 1994. Mr. Knecht was a faithful member of St. Patrick Church and was very active in the Knights of Columbus, Franklin Council 1020, as a member of the Fourth Degree. He was a member of the zoning hearing board of Sandycreek Township, a board member of the Literacy Council of Venango County and a member of Franklin Elks Lodge No. 110. Mr. Knecht enjoyed golfing with the Senior League of the Sleepy Hollow Golf Club. He also enjoyed gardening and designing and building homes, especially the home in which he and his wife currently resided. He was married June 28, 1958, in Immaculate Conception Church in Willoughby, Ohio, to the former Virginia M. "Ginny" Keefe, who survives. They were married for 46 years. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two sons, Michael V. Gold and wife, Annie, of Suffern, N.Y., and Joseph P. Knecht of Raleigh, N.C.; one daughter, Colette M. Richard Moyer of Vo-Tech Drive died Sunday, March 6, 2005, in the Oil City Presbyterian Home. Born in Chanute, Kan., he was the son of Claude M. and Lenora Mae Moyer. He grew up in Lakeland, Fla., and moved to Oil City in 1941. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Ranger. That aircraft carrier saw action off the coast of Norway and also was deployed to Newfoundland and Iceland and crossed the Arctic Circle before being sent to the Pacific Theater of Operations. In civilian life, Mr. Moyer spent most of his working years as a sales representative in the gift industry. He enjoyed a lifelong interest and pleasure in golf. He was married March 5, 1946, to Louise Conn, who died July 12, 1980. He was married again Aug. 5, 1982, to Jacqueline Lamb, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Jenny Barney; a son, David Moyer; four stepchildren, Pat Knight, Janet Morley, Judy Vendetti and William J. Lamb; and seven grandchildren, Lindsey Moyer, Scott and Ann Morley, John and Ben Coogan, and William and Rachel Lamb. A daughter, Paula Lamb Everman, died in December 2004. Andrew Wayne Salsgiver Andrew Wayne Salsgiver, 33, of Wrightsville, died unexpectedly Thursday, March 3, 2005, at his home. He was born in Warren, the son of Karen H. Getty and Lawrence S. Salsgiver. He served as a machinist mate in the U.S. Navy as a member of the submarine force, the "Silent Service." Mr. Salsgiver was a jack of all trades, honest and dependable, and worked at Thermotech of Harrisburg, where he performed, among many tasks, HVAC installations. He attended the Heritage International Assembly Church of Wrightsville. Mr. Salsgiver was married to Tracy Lea Smith, who survives. He enjoyed children and those around him to the fullest. He and his wife, Tracy, were expecting a son, Travis Andrew Salsgiver, within the next two weeks. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are his mother, Karen H. Getty of Sandy Lake; his father and stepmother, Lawrence S. and Peg Salsgiver of Leeper; a brother, Robert S. Surviving are special cousins, Sharon Stone of Hollywood, Calif., Chris and Penny Domres of Franklin, Ressie Hapac of Cooperstown, and Tasha, Christy and Scott. She was preceded in death by a nephew, Robert Matthew Owens.
