    3. The Derrick, March 31, 2005: Betty Jane Grant, Wilmington, N.C. Jonathan H. Hutchinson, 201 Bissell Ave., Oil City Raymond C. "Mike" Kinnear, Mansfield, Texas, formerly of Franklin Michael K. "Grumpy" Phillips, Knox Jefferson Henry "Jeff" Russell, Wooster, Ohio, formerly of Marienville Betty Jane Grant Betty Jane Grant, 77, of Wilmington, N.C., died at 4:30 p.m. Monday, March 28, 2005, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington following a brief illness. Born Feb. 16, 1928, in Ebensburg, she was the daughter of Bob and Eva Rodgers Betzler. Mrs. Grant was a homemaker and was of the Methodist faith. She was married June 5, 1954, to Harold Lincoln Grant, who died July 30, 1976. Surviving are a daughter and husband, Danette and David Young; a son and wife, Mark and Debbie Grant; and one grandson, Christopher Lincoln Grant, all of Wilmington, N.C. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Grant was preceded in death by an infant brother. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Grandview Cemetery, Sligo, with the Rev. Richard Russell, pastor of the Sligo United Methodist Church, officiating. The Varner Funeral Home in Sligo is in charge of arrangements. The family suggests memorial donations be made to the American Heart Association or to the Humane Society of Wilmington, N.C. Jonathan H. Hutchinson Jonathan H. Hutchinson, 74, of 201 Bissell Ave., Oil City, a prominent Oil City businessman and former elected official, died Tuesday, March 29, 2005, in UPMC Northwest, Seneca. Born May 28, 1930, in Philipsburg, he was the son of Jonathan Eccles and Hilda Hagyard Hutchinson. He graduated in 1948 from Houtzdale-Woodard-Brisbin High School and worked in the funeral business from that time on, starting as an apprentice for his father. Mr. Hutchinson moved in 1957 from Houtzdale to Oil City where he joined the C.C. Crawford Funeral Home staff as a licensed funeral director. In 1960, he became a partner in the Hutchinson and Morton Funeral Home and in 1978, he purchased full ownership of the business, operating as the Jonathan H. Hutchinson Funeral Home. Later, he operated the funeral home in partnership with his son, James. During the Korean War, Mr. Hutchinson served as a high speed radio operator in the U.S. Army stationed in Japan. Following his discharge from the Army, he attended the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science, graduating in 1955 with honors and receiving his funeral director's license. Mr. Hutchinson later completed coursework in criminology and criminal law at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. In 1970, he was elected as the Venango County coroner, a post he was re-elected to five times over an 18-year period, stepping down when he was elected a Venango County commissioner, serving in that capacity from 1988 to 1994. Under his leadership, the county undertook and completed some long talked about construction projects, including the Veterans Memorial Bridge, the new Venango Regional Airport terminal, the new Venango Manor nursing home, the new county jail and the courthouse annex among others. As a former ambulance service operator, Mr. Hutchinson also was particularly pleased to establish 911 emergency telephone numbers in Venango County during his commissioner tenure. Mr. Hutchinson was very active in civic affairs. He was inducted into the Oil City Lions Club in 1958 and served for 44 years, making him the longest active member of the club. He held various club positions over the years including Tail Twister, board of directors and was the "Growler" editor for more than 25 years. He rose through the chairs of third, second and first vice president to become King Lion in 1966-67. One of his most notable achievements as a Lion was the founding of the Venango County Eye Bank in the year of his presidency. In June 1973, he also became the first person in Venango County certified to perform eye enucleations for the purpose of corneal transplantation by the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Active in all Lions activities, he received a Master Key for recruiting and sponsoring 12 new members. In 1998, the Oil City Lions Club presented Mr. Hutchinson with the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, which is the highest honor in Lions Club International for community humanitarian service. Over the years, he has given time to serve on or with many other volunteer organizations including Community Services of Venango County; Venango-Forest Chapter, American Red Cross, serving as former chairman and treasurer; the Venango County Association for the Blind, serving as longtime treasurer; Boy Scouts of America, honored as the first Eagle Scout in Houtzdale; Order of the Arrow, serving as cubmaster and scoutmaster; and Lincoln School PTA president. Mr. Hutchinson also held membership in the American Legion (Post No. 32 member and past commander of Freeberg Post No. 591); Oil City VFW Post No. 464; the Oil City Area Chamber of Commerce legislative chairman, two terms. He was active in the Oil City First Presbyterian Church where he sang in the church choir for 46 years, served as former clerk of sessions, deacon, elder, treasurer, taught Sunday school and served as a member of the Ecumenical Commission of Oil City. Mr. Hutchinson served on several economic development boards including VCIDC, Oil City Community Development Corporation and Northwest Regional Training Partnership. In addition, he was appointed in 1997 by Gov. Tom Ridge to serve on the Governor's Community Partnership for Safe Children. He served as Republican Precinct Committeeman in Oil City for many years and was a member of the Venango County Republican Executive Committee. In addition he was a member of the Oil City Lodge No. 710, F. & A.M., Venango Lodge of Perfection, New Castle Consistory and Acacia Grotto. Mr. Hutchinson was married in Reading Aug. 31, 1957, to Daria E. Belis, who survives. They were married by the Rev. Volodymyr Kowal. Also surviving are seven children, Jonathan D. Hutchinson of Seattle, Wash., Robert P. and Marilyn Hutchinson of Jamestown, Pa., Scott E. and Marybeth Hutchinson of Oil City, James B. and Tracey Hutchinson of Oil City, Daria Anne Hutchinson of Richmond, Va., Eric A. Hutchinson of Baltimore, Md., and David E. and Lynn Hutchinson of Fort Drum, N.Y.; and seven grandchildren, Kathryn and Sarah Hutchinson of Jamestown, Pa., Sophie, Anne Marie and Lucy Hutchinson of Oil City and Megan and Jonathan Hutchinson of Fort Drum, N.Y. He also is survived by two brothers and their wives, Thomas and Ruthann Hutchinson of West Chester and Robert and Barbara Hutchinson of Port Neches, Texas; three sisters, Margaret and husband, Eugene Shimel of Houtzdale, Mary and husband, Samuel Sleigh of Brockway and Hilda Mae Hutchinson of Houtzdale; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Hutchinson was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother. Friends will be received from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday in the Hutchinson Funeral Home, 201 Bissell Ave., Oil City. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the First Presbyterian Church, 215 E. Bissell Ave., Oil City, with the Rev. Joseph E. Filer IV, pastor of the church, officiating. Interment will be in Grove Hill Cemetery, Oil City. "Mike" Kinnear, 65, of Mansfield, Texas, formerly of Franklin, died Wednesday morning, March 30, 2005, in Texas. Among his survivors are a brother, F. David Kinnear of Seneca, and three sisters, Carolee Michener and Katy Hosier, both of Franklin, and Barbara Wabrick of West Mifflin. Michael K. 'Grumpy' Phillips Michael K. "Grumpy" Phillips, 56, of Knox, died of cancer at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, 2005, at his home. The Robert V. Burns Funeral Home, Clarion, is in charge of arrangemen ts. Jefferson Henry 'Jeff' Russell Jefferson Henry "Jeff" Russell, 87, of Wooster, Ohio, formerly of Marienville, died Saturday morning, March 26, 2005, in Sunrise Assisted Living. Born May 11, 1917, in Detroit, Mich., he was the son of Merrill and Clara Reynor Russell. Mr. Russell was a graduate of Marienville High School. He served with the United States Army from 1945 to 1947, including a tour in Japan with the Central Intelligence Corps. Mr. Russell managed the family business, a general store in Marienville, and then worked for several years at the Internal Revenue Service in Pittsburgh. However, the greatest portion of his business career was spent in various positions with Glass Containers Corp. in Knox. Prior to his retirement there in 1983, he was a senior quality control engineer with responsibility for much of the northeastern United States. During his lifetime, Mr. Russell was a member of the Presbyterian Church, U.S.A., having served as an elder and a trustee of churches in Pennsylvania. Mr. Russell was a member of the Masonic Order. While working for the IRS in Pittsburgh, Mr. Russell met Mollen Dohanyos and they were married for 63 years until her death in 2003. They retired in 1985 to Wooster, Ohio, where they were members of the First Presbyterian Church. Surviving are a son, John M. Russell and his wife, the Rev. Susan Russell of Strongsville, Ohio; and two grandsons, David Lloyd and Timothy John of Boston and Plymouth, Mass. He also is survived by a sister, Clara Baughman and husband, Robert, of Appomattox, Va. In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Russell was preceded in death by his two younger brothers, Harry and John Russell. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 5, in the First Presbyterian Church in Wooster with the Rev. James Watt officiating. The family will receive friends in the church parlor following the service. Interment will be made at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 6, in the North Forest Cemetery in Marienville.
