The Derrick, March 18, 2005: Judge William Edmund Breene, Oil City June Baker Donaldson, San Angelo, Texas, formerly of Franklin William Roy Grove, Parker Roberta Rose Hays, 6189 Sandy Lake-Polk Road, Polk Edward Hemmes, Oakmont, formerly of Oil City and Butler C. Janiel Kapp, Shippenville, formerly of Lamartine Ralph LeRoy Say, Clarion William Edmund Breene William Edmund Breene, for many years president judge of the Court of Common Pleas of Venango County, died on his 88th birthday Wednesday, March 16, 2005, in UPMC Northwest, Seneca. Judge Breene was born March 16, 1917, in Oil City, the son of William Edmund Breene and Grace Inez Pitts Breene. His father's family had owned and managed the Stoneboro and Chautauqua Lake Ice Co., which later became the Venango Ice and Coal Co. on Main Street, Oil City. After the death of his father in 1921, he was raised by his widowed mother. He was a 1935 graduate of Oil City High School, a 1939 graduate of Dickinson College and a 1942 graduate of Dickinson School of Law. During World War II he was a special agent with the FBI, stationed in the New York City Field Office. In 1945, he began the practice of law in Venango County, first with the late Robert M. Dale in Franklin and then in Oil City, where he also was general counsel to the National Transit Co. From 1950 to 1956, he served on the Oil City School Board. He was a member of city council in Oil City from 1956 to 1961. In November 1961, he was elected judge of the Court of Common Pleas of Venango County, the 28th Judicial District of Pennsylvania, and was sworn in as president judge Jan. 1, 1962. In 1971 and again in 1981 he was retained in office. For 25 years, until his mandatory retirement in 1987 at age 70, he remained president judge of this court. He then was commissioned as a senior judge, serving in that capacity for 15 further years until the end of 2002. Judge Breene was a member of the American Bar Association, the Pennsylvania Bar Association and the Venango County Bar Association. Active in the community, Judge Breene was a trustee of the Samuel Justus Charitable Trust and the Dr. and Mrs. Arthur William Phillips Charitable Trust. He had been a board member of the Salvation Army and the Oil City Public Library and had been president of the Kiwanis Club. He was the recipient of the Oil City Exchange Club's Golden Deeds Award and the Boy Scouts of America Silver Beaver Award. Judge Breene was a member of Christ Episcopal Church where he had been a lay leader, a member of vestry, senior warden and chancellor of the Episcopal Diocese of Erie. He was active in several Masonic organizations and felt greatly honored to have been named a 33rd Degree Mason, Freemasonry's highest award. On Sept. 6, 1941, he was married to the former Mary Louise Kirkpatrick, who survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Barbara Breene Hoelscher and her husband, Dr. Wolfgang Hoelscher of Gauting, Germany, Roberta A. Breene of Stuart, Fla., and Christine L. Breene of Mill Creek; five grandchildren, Dr. Theodore G. Williams III and his wife, Athena Scotes, of Athens, Greece, Lydia Williams and her husband, Scott Thomas, of Stuart, Fla., Susanna Hoelscher and Caroline Hoelscher, both of Gauting, Germany, and Alice Rose Breene of Mill Creek; two great-grandchildren, Sophia and Andrew Williams of Athens; and a nephew, John E. Breene of Herndon, Va. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Louise Breene Mountain, and a brother, John Earl Breene. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 23, in Christ Episcopal Church, 16 Central Ave., Oil City. The family will receive friends in the parish hall of the church following the services. Private interment will be in Grove Hill Cemetery. The Morrison Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to a charity of one's choice. June Baker Donaldson June Baker Donaldson, 85, formerly of Franklin, a 1937 graduate of Rocky Grove High School, with several relatives in the Franklin area, died Tuesday, March 15, 2005, in San Angelo, Texas. William Roy Grove William Roy Grove, 86, of Allegheny Township, Parker, died at 9:15 a.m. Thursday, March 17, 2005, in Butler Memorial Hospital after an illness. Born Aug. 25, 1918, in Foxburg, he was the son of Wesley and Kathryn Irene Whitling Grove. Mr. Grove was a veteran of World War II and was honorably discharged from the United States Army Air Force as a private first class. He entered the military Nov. 24, 1942, and was discharged Feb. 10, 1946. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the American Theater Service Medal, the European-American Theater Medal and the Victory Medal. Mr. Grove was a sawyer in saw mills in western Pennsylvania for many years. He then was employed by Sunbeam Coal Co. He then became employed as a custodian at Allegheny-Clarion Valley School in Foxburg, retiring there. He was an active member of the Parker Senior Citizens Center for many years and was a member of the ECHO Club in Eau Claire. Mr. Grove was Protestant by faith. Surviving are a brother, Carnie W. Grove of Eau Claire; a sister, Pearl Altman of Spring Church near Elderton; two nephews; one niece; great-nieces and great-nephews. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday in the H. Jack Buzard Funeral Home, Wayne Street, Parker. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home. Interment will be in Old Zion Cemetery near Emlenton. Roberta Rose Hays Roberta Rose Hays, 41, of 6189 Sandy Lake-Polk Road, Polk, died at 4 a.m. Thursday, March 17, 2005, at her home after an extended illness. Born Oct. 30, 1963, in Wytheville, Va., she was the daughter of James W. and Ella Mandy Chrisley Ring. Mrs. Hays was an independent distributor for McKee Foods (Little Debbie). She was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Sandy Lake, Mrs. Hays enjoyed spending time with her family. She was married Oct. 30, 1995, to David C. Hays, who survives. Also surviving are three sisters, Wilma Cline and Freda Leagens, both of Virginia, and Betty Castle of Polk; and one brother, James D. Ring of Meadville. Mrs. Hays was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Brenda Campbell; and one brother, Charles Ring. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday in Jehovah's Witnesses Kingdom Hall of Sandy Lake, 3481 Sandy Lake-New Lebanon Road, Sandy Lake, with Roger Stallsmith officiating. Edward Hemmes Edward Hemmes of Oakmont, a former resident of Oil City and Butler, died Sunday, March 13, 2005, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, following a three-week illness. Born March 30, 1926, in Clearfield, he was the son of Mabel and Edward Fern and was raised by Elsie and Fritz Hemmes. Mr. Hemmes, a veteran of World War II, was employed in a variety of positions throughout his long working career. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Ann Hemmes of Beverly Healthcare-Oil City; his children, Barry Hemmes of Las Vegas, Nev., Marty Hemmes and wife, Linda, of Oil City, Denise Tiberi and husband, Paul, of Lakewood, Colo., Annie Potter and husband, Bob, of Irwin, Debbie Hemmes of Washington, D.C., Ronie Barger and husband, Bill, of Petaluma, Calaif., and Annette Boomer and husband, Mark, of Virginia Beach, Va.; 10 grandchildren, Steven Hemmes, Sherri Hemmes, Heather Conrad, Tim Hemmes, Leslie Rutherford, PJ Tiberi, Victoria Potter, Bobby Potter, Jennifer Barger and Erin Barger; four stepgrandchildren, Justin Bennitt, Tanya Bennitt, Amanda Potter and Miles Boomer, and five great-grandchildren, Heather Hemmes, Cody Conrad, Jaylei Hemmes, Jack Rutherford and Taylor Conrad. In accordance with Mr. Hemmes' wishes, there will be no services. Cremation arrangements are in charge of Burkett-Truby Funeral Home in Oakmont. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice. C. Janiel Kapp C. Janiel Kapp, 92, of Beverly Healthcare-Shippenville, formerly of Lamartine, died at 11 p.m. Wednesday, March 16, 2005, in the Beverly facility. Born Aug. 25, 1912, near Knox, she was the daughter of Joseph and Laura Brothers Sheffer. She was a graduate of Salem High School where she was a star basketball player. She also attended Oil City Business School. Mrs. Kapp was a switchboard operator in Lamartine. After her marriage, she and her husband owned and operated Kapp's Mobil Station prior to their retirement in 1974. She was a member of the Salem Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school for many years, sang in the choir and worked with the youth group. Mrs. Kapp had been chaplain of the American Legion Auxiliary in Lamartine. She enjoyed cooking, baking, playing the piano and spending time with her family. Mrs. Kapp was married Aug. 24, 1934, to Harold A. Kapp, who died Dec. 27, 2004. They had celebrated their 70th anniversary last August. Surviving are a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Kapp was the last surviving member of her immediate family. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Sarah Sheffer Benner; and three brothers, Paul Sheffer, Everett Sheffer and Robert Sheffer. The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the David C. McEntire Funeral Home, 504 E. Penn St., Knox. Viewing also will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday in the Salem Lutheran Church in Lamartine. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the church with the Rev. Rob McCarty, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in the Salem Lutheran Cemetery. The family suggests memorials be made to the Salem Lutheran Church, Lamartine, 16375, or to the Gideons. Ralph LeRoy Say Ralph LeRoy Say, 56, of Clarion, died at 1:30 a.m. Thursday, March 17, 2005, at his residence following a three-month battle with cancer. Born Nov. 8, 1948, in Grove City, he was the son of Herbert and Vivian Coast Say. Mr. Say loved the outdoors, traveling, hunting, fishing and airplanes. Surviving are his mother, Vivian Say of Emlenton; a brother, Gary Say of Emlenton; and four sisters, Carol Jenkins of Knox, Pat Miller of Titusville, Judy Hartzell and husband, Hartford, of Knox and Janet Dittman and husband, Wayne, of Oil City; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Say was preceded in death by his father, March 9, 1977; his maternal grandparents, Floyd and Ida Coast; and his paternal grandparents, Daniel Lee and Mae Say. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the William N. Rupert Mortuary in Knox. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in the funeral home with the Rev. Randy Evans, Clarion County Hospice chaplain, officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family to help defray expenses.
