Huff, Butler Street, Clintonville Constance Black Kase Kapp, 150 Main St., Seneca Elizabeth "Betty Jane" Sullivan, Industry Orval Paul Sweitzer Sr., 219 Prospect Ave., Franklin James Alexander Watson, Brookville James L. Huff, 61, of Butler Street, Clintonville, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at his residence after an extended illness. Born Sept. 8, 1942, in Salem, he was the son of Walter V. and Claribel B. Griffin Huff. Mr. Huff graduated from Victory Joint School, now part of the Franklin School District, in Irwin Township in 1962. A resident of Clintonville since 1980, he was employed at Daniels Transfer as a tractor-trailer driver for 15 years before his retirement. He was a member for most of his life of the Moose lodges in Mercer and Franklin, the VFW of Grove City and a social member of Paul W. Wood Post No. 7840 at Hilliards. He also was a member of the Thompson Memorial Association at West Sunbury Legion No. 243, West Sunbury. Mr. Huff enjoyed hunting and fishing and enjoyed the outdoors. Surviving are a daughter, Pamela E. Gariepy, and companion, Rodney J. Smathers, of Grand Valley; two sons, James A. Huff of Pleasantville, and Walter Vern Huff, and wife, Wendy L., of Titusville; a sister, Beverly J. Gilmore, and husband, Edward L., of Clintonville; a sister-in-law, Connie M. Huff of Harrisville; several nieces and nephews; six grandchildren, Jesse, Melissa and Tiffany Vanderhoof and Joshua, Amanda and Cody Huff; and a great-grandchild, Jag Ryan Vanderhoof. He was preceded in death by his father on Aug. 2, 1993; his mother on July 4, 1999; and a brother, Arnold B. Huff Sr., on Oct. 5, 2003. Services will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Larry E. McKinley Funeral Home, 109 Emlenton St., Clintonville, with the Rev. Anthony Catullo of the Union Presbyterian Church of Clintonville officiating. Constance Black Kase Kapp, 83, of 150 Main St., Seneca, died early Tuesday morning, Aug. 17, 2004, in UPMC Northwest, Franklin. Born Nov. 20, 1920, in Franklin, she was a daughter of George Acheson and Constance Estella Hunter Black. She was a 1938 graduate of Franklin High School and then attended Allegheny College in Meadville and the University of Alabama. Mrs. Kapp started her business career at United Welding with her father and brother in 1947. In 1958, she began the business of Kapp Alloy and Wire Inc. She was the owner, president and CFO of the company until 1997, when it was sold to Franklin businessman Jack Crawford. The business, still operating as Kapp Alloy and Wire Inc., expanded to international markets under Mrs. Kapp's leadership. She served on the Alumni board of Allegheny College from 1990 to the present and was an active member of the Franklin Industrial and Commercial Development Authority from 1995 to 2003. She was a member of the Franklin Club and had been a member of Wanango Country Club. She traveled extensively all over the world. Mrs. Kapp was well known for not only caring for her family, but also her friends and people in general. She was married in 1941 to James Harrison Kase Sr., who preceded her in death. In 1950, she married Donald C. Kapp, who preceded her in death. Surviving are a son, James Harrison Kase Jr. of Phoenix; four grandsons, Robert James Kase, and wife, Tonyia, of Prescott, Ariz., Michael John Kase Jr. of Franklin, Bret Wayne Kase of Oil City, and Wesley Paul Kase of East Lake, Ohio; 13 great-grandchildren; a brother, George Acheson, and wife, Patricia, of Franklin; and a dear friend, Tammy Masterson of Seneca. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Michael J. Kase Sr.; a daughter, Katherine Kase; and a great-granddaughter, Tonya Leona Kase. There is no visitation. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Franklin Cemetery. The family suggests memorials be made to the Venango County Humane Society, 2724 Deep Hollow Road, Franklin, 16323. Arrangements are being made by Huff Chapel, Franklin. Elizabeth "Betty Jane" Sullivan, 69, of Industry died Friday, Aug. 13, 2004. Among her survivors are a son, Malcolm Sullivan and his wife, Mindy, and two grandchildren, Zach and Aaron Sullivan, all of Oil City. Orval Paul Sweitzer Sr., 78, of 219 Prospect Ave., Franklin, died at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, at his residence. Born June 1, 1926, he was the son of Clair and Rebeca Shanko Sweitzer. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and served on the USS Alabama. Mr. Sweitzer retired in 1974 as a foundry worker for Oil Well Supply. He was of the Presbyterian faith. He enjoyed working on lawnmowers and reading Westerns. He especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was married June 25, 1955, to Mary McCool, who survives. Also surviving are 10 children, Howard Sweitzer, and wife, Julia, of Titusville, Larry Sweitzer, and wife, Dianna, of Franklin, Tom Sweitzer of Franklin, Orval Paul Sweitzer Jr., and wife, Maxine, of Franklin, Eugene Sweitzer, and wife, Cheryl, of Conneaut Lake, Darlene Sweitzer, and husband, Jack Doyle, of Franklin, Mary Sweitzer-Williams, and husband, Bill, of North Carolina, Diana Sweitzer-Sparley, and husband, Dave, of Cooperstown, Ella Sweitzer of Franklin, and Betty Sweitzer-Van Zandt, and husband, Ron, of Franklin; 23 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Pauline Perry of Indiana, Pa. James Alexander Watson, 85, of Laurelbrooke Landing, Brookville, and formerly of Butler Street in Brookville, died Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, at Brookville Hospital. Born Aug. 22, 1918, in Curwensville, he was the son of Alex and Imogene Liddle Watson. Mr. Watson was a 1936 graduate of DuBois Area High School and a 1938 graduate of DuBois Business College. He served as a quartermaster in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater. He was the former owner and president of DuBois Business College and retired in 1976. Mr. Watson was a member and lay minister of the Brookville and DuBois First United Methodist Church. He was a member of the DuBois Rotary Club, the DuBois Area Chamber of Commerce, the Brookville Kiwanis Club and had been elected as Man of the Year in DuBois. He was married Oct. 4, 1975, in Brookville, to Evelyn Black Heaton Watson, who survives. He previously was married to Kathryn J. Baker, who preceded him in death. Also surviving are two stepsons, John Kline of DuBois, and D. Jack Heaton, and wife, Hindy, of York; two stepdaughters, Janet Martz, and husband, Earl, of New Bethlehem, and Janice Sebring, and husband, Lon, of Brookville; a brother, Robert Watson of Clearfield; a sister, Jean Peterson of Charleston, W.Va.; and nine grandchildren. Huff, Butler Street, Clintonville Arthur Ian "Bud" James, Main Street, Rimersburg Jessika Elaine Davenport, 21, of Emlenton and the Butler area, died suddenly at 3:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, in Penn Township, Butler County. She was born May 21, 1983, in Butler, and was a 2001 graduate of Allegheny-Clarion Valley High School, Foxburg. Ms. Davenport had served with the Pennsylvania National Guard until physical health problems prevented her participation, and she was honorably discharged because of health reasons. She then served as a certified nurse's aide in the Butler area. She was Protestant by faith. Surviving are a brother, Daniel Davenport of Butler; her maternal grandmother, Elaine Johnson Wideman of Emlenton; two aunts, Deborah Irvin and Diane Wideman, both of Butler; five uncles, William Wideman of New Mexico, Edmund and Darren Wideman, both of Emlenton, and Milton and Ralph Wideman, both of Butler; and several cousins. She was preceded in death by her mother, Judith Lynn Wideman Davenport, on Feb. 9, 1992. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the H. Gillette, 66, of Venice, Fla., and an Oil City native, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004. Among his survivors are two daughters, LeAnne Gillette Hengstler, and Diane Myers Rehberg, both of Seneca; and two sons, Brian Myers of Titusville, and Chris Myers of Franklin. James L. Glass, 66, of 143 Glass Lane, Venus, died at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at his residence. Born July 13, 1938, in Venus, he was a son of Lester E. Glass Sr. and Julia H. McCauley Glass. Mr. Glass served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1963. He had worked for Neiderriters, Asplundah Tree Co., Salsgivers, Exley Lumber and Koppers. Mr. Glass was an avid hunter, enjoyed fishing, camping, outdoors and spending time with his grandchildren, family and dog, Button. On Dec. 31, 1966, he married the former Betty L. Greenwald, who survives. Also surviving are two children, Melissa D. Garich, and husband, Christopher, of Franklin, and Randy L. Born May 28, 1956, in Langhorne, he was the son of Fred and Thelma Allshouse Haag. Mr. Haag was a high-lift operator for Mercer Forge, retiring in 2000 after 20 years of service. He was a member of ABATE and Grove City American Legion Post 220. He loved to sing and play guitar. He was of the Protestant faith. He was married June 28, 1975, to Sandra McCauley, who survives in Hadley. Also surviving are two children, Anthony Paul Haag and Sonya R. Arthur Ian "Bud" James, 86, of Main Street, Rimersburg, died at 12:45 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at Beverly Health Care, Shippenville, following a long illness. Born Oct. 25, 1917, in Pittsburgh, he was the only son of Arthur I. James and Honor Fenton James. He was a member of the United Church of Christ in Rimersburg and had attended schools in Pittsburgh and Florida before graduating from Union High School in 1936. He then attended Allegheny College in Meadville. He served with the Army Air Corps during World War II and received his pilot's certificate while stationed at Randolph Field in Texas. He was a charter member of the Rimersburg Lions Club and was King Lion in 1988 and 1989. He was a member of the Rimersburg Borough Council, served as president, and was instrumental in the establishment of the new water system from East Brady. Also, he was a founding member and past treasurer of the Southern Clarion County Development Committee; a member of the Council of Government while the Sligo Park was built; a member of the American Legion; and he was Rimersburg's Citizen of the Year in 1982. He operated Arthur I. James Insurance Agency in Rimersburg, Petrolia and Butler from 1946 until 1976, and then operated the Rimersburg office until his retirement in 1992. He was married Dec. 28, 1940, to the former Pauline J. "Polly" Jordan, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, James Robert James, and wife, Marlene, and Arthur William James, all of Rimersburg; a daughter, Honor Katherine Stawarz, and husband, James, of Johnstown; five grandchildren, Steven Stanley Stawarz, and wife, Amy, of Johnstown, Sheila Pauline Johnson, and husband, Dirk W., of Ebensburg, Jesse Robert James, and wife, Suzann, of Leeper, Jamie Marvin James of Monaca, and Richard William James of Rimersburg; nine great-grandchildren, Jordan, Catherine, Zander, James and Nolan Dirk, and Karson and Pauline Johnson, all of Ebensburg, Seth Steven and Sydney Honor Stawarz, both of Johnstown, Christy Ann and Elizabeth Grace James, both of Leeper, and Joshua Thomas James of Monaca. Eleanor Elizabeth Wolfe, Lawsonham Street, Rimersburg Jessika Elaine Davenport, 21, of Emlenton, died suddenly early Sunday morning. Arrangements are being made by the H. Earley, 95, of Oil City died at 8:50 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at the Oil City Presbyterian Home. Born Oct. 29, 1908, in Cabot, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Felix and Sarah Schreckengost Humes. A homemaker, Mrs. Earley was married in Wheeling, W.Va., on June 19, 1936, to James G. Earley, who proceeded her in death Oct. 14, 1977. Mrs. Earley had been member of the Calvary United Methodist Church. She was a member of the ladies auxiliary of the United Transportation Union for 54 years. She is survived by one son, James R. Earley and wife Joanne of Cumming, Ga.; three daughters, Donna Patton and husband Robert of Columbus, Ohio; Norita Warner of Titusville and Joyce Young of Butler; 12 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; two step-great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband she was proceeded in death by a grandson, Ronnie Warner; three sisters, Della, Florence and Clara; and three brothers, Harold, Myron and Chester. Pamela Lee Fauzey Silvis, 49, of Staab Road, Strattanville, died Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, at Clarion Hospital. Born Sept. 3, 1954, in Oil City, she was the daughter of John and Bethel Grubbs Fauzey Sr. She attended West Forest High School. She was a homemaker and loved to collect Avon products. She loved sewing, reading romance novels and her pets. She collected angels and Christmas decorations. She is survived by her fiancé Lonnie L. Jackson of Strattanville; two daughters, Shawna Weichler of California, and Sandy Silvis and her boyfriend, Jason Weilacher, of Oil City; a grandson, Jayson Weilacher of Oil City; two brothers, John Fauzey Jr. of Nickleville, and Rickey Fauzey Sr. of DuBois; a sister Madeline Fauzey of Oil City; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her ex-husband, Russell Silvis Jr., two infant sons and several aunts and uncles. Donald William “Poncho” Sterling, 59, of 18 Spring St., Rouseville, died at 7 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, at his home following an extended illness. Born June 19, 1945, in Baltimore, Md., he was the son of Ruth Hollabaugh and the late Ken Sterling. Mr. Sterling was a 1963 graduate of Duarte High School in California. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served as a helicopter repairman. He received the National Defense Service medal and the Sharpshooter badge. Mr. Sterling worked at Pennzoil as a crane operator in maintenance, retiring in 2000 after 30 years of service. He was married Jan. 26, 1968 in Las Vegas to the former Linda Fig, who survives. An avid sports fan, he especially enjoyed watching the Pittsburgh Steelers, West Virginia University and the Mad Dog softball team. He also enjoyed NASCAR and hunting. Mr. Sterling was a member of the Oil City Men’s Pool League and several golf leagues. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. In addition to his wife he is survived by two sons, Mark Christopher Sterling, who is serving with the U.S. Army in the Netherlands, and James Martin Sterling and wife Renee of Fredericksburg, Va.; two grandchildren, Tiffany and Matthew Sterling of Fredericksburg; and one brother, Chris Sterling of Oregon. A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Sportsman’s Tavern. Memorials may be made to the VNA Hospice. The Reinsel Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Eleanor Elizabeth Wolfe, 76, of Lawsonham Street, Rimersburg, died at 8:20 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at Clarion Hospital following a lengthy illness. Born in Distant, Armstrong County, on Nov. 24, 1927, she was a daughter of Daniel B. McCauley and Rosetta “Rose” Ruth McCauley. She attended elementary school at the Porter Township School and Cove School and then graduated from New Bethlehem High School in 1946. She was employed by Owens Illinois in Clarion in the selecting department for 19 years and retired in 1975. She was a member of the Baker Street Church of God in Rimersburg. She enjoyed cooking, baking, attending church and her collection of bells and angels. She was married Sept. 9, 1946, in Cumberland, Md., to Lester L. Wolfe, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Donald L. Wolfe, and friend, Debra Cornman, of Kittanning; two grandchildren, Donald Jeffrey Wolfe of New Castle, and Ginger R. Born Nov. 6, 1964, in Franklin, he was a son of the late Ronald Hawke Sr. and Carol Bowser Hawke Davis, who survives in Utica. Mr. Hawke attended Franklin High School. He was employed as a concrete finisher for L&G Baker Construction. He enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing and spending time with his children. He was married Aug. 5, 2004, to the former Brandi Montgomery, who survives. Also surviving are two children, Gage and Alicia Hawke, both at home; a sister, Linda Reddish and husband, Randy, of Stuart, Fla.; a brother, Ronald "Rocky" Hawke Jr. and wife, Melissa, of Franklin; two half-brothers, Stephen Hawke, serving in the U.S. Navy, and Scott Hawke of Cleveland; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Born Aug. 14, 1916, in Springfield Township, Mercer County, she was the daughter of Henry Orville Welton and Louelle Mae Johnson. Mrs. Neeley was a retired cafeteria worker and school bus driver for the Grove City area schools. She worked with child evangelism, church camps and as a Sunday School teacher. She also was involved with prison ministry and the Christian Cross-Road Bible Institute. She was married April 18, 1936, to Joseph M. Neeley, who preceded her in death Sept. 7, 2001. Surviving are five daughters, Elizabeth Book and her husband, Jim, of Rockford, Mich., Rebecca Mae Hilliard of Mercer, Josephine Ellen Snyder of Harrisville, Gloria Welton and husband, Stanley, of Oil City, and Judy Foster of New Castle; two sisters, Josephine Wagner and husband, Gerald, of Ohio, and Della Mae Patterson and husband, Richard, of Slippery Rock; three brothers, Robert J. Born Nov. 12, 1948, in McKeesport, he was the son of Robert Paul Ruffing and Mildred Lee. Mr. Ruffing was a U.S. Air Force veteran of Vietnam. He was a maintenance supervisor at the Scrubgrass Power Plant. He was a member of East Grove United Methodist Church, a member of the Franklin Elks and was very active in the Franklin YMCA. He also was an avid golfer and enjoyed working in his yard and the fellowship provided by the Fox and Boar. He was married July 14, 1973, to the former Kathryn Veronick, who survives. Also surviving are three children, Cory Ruffing of Franklin, Tiffany Nolf and husband, David, of Cooperstown, and Inde Ruffing of Franklin; two grandchildren, Julian Rivas and Malee Jane Nolf, both of Cooperstown; two brothers, Robert Thomas Ruffing and wife, Pam, of Dravosburg, and Donald Paul Ruffing of Elizabeth Township; and two sisters, Mary Ann Boord of Smithton and Sharon Lynn Cryer and husband, Dale, of Walls, Miss. Mary Jane Crate was born December 24, 1832 to Daniel & Hannah Crate. She married Samuel Jacob Watterson 1857. He was born June 07, 1830 in Clarion Co. PA, and died December 27, 1925 in Missouri. Mr. Dovenspike was retired from Clarion Newspapers and had formerly worked for PennDOT. He was well- known thoughout the area as a poet having published poems in The Derrick and The Clarion News and was noted for his anthologies. Mr. Dovenspike was a member of the Shippenville Methodist Church and taught Sunday school classes at that church for several years. He was also a member of the Lion's Club of Clarion. Mr. Kriebel retired in 1997 after serving more than 30 years as a laborer for the Street Department for the City of Franklin. He was a member of the Professional Bowlers Association and bowled on the Monday and Friday Night Industrial Leagues. Mr. Kriebel also enjoyed fishing and puzzles. He was married Feb. 25, 1964, to Mary A. Hogue, who died Nov. 15, 2000. Surviving are two children, David R. Kriebel at home and Cindy McFadden and husband, Michael, of Oil City. John Edward Moyar, 82, of Falls Church, Va., died Monday, July 19, 2004, at his residence. Born May 13, 1922, in Rouseville, he was the son of Eugene S. and Lottie Osborne Moyar. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a yeoman second class aboard the USS Eldorado and witnessed the raising of the flag on Iwo Jima. After his discharge from the Navy, Mr. Moyar worked and retired from the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and lived around the surrounding area until his death. Mr. Moyar enjoyed life and spending time with his family and friends. He was a strong Episcopalian by faith and was said to be one of the youngest men ever named lay reader at Christ Episcopal Church in Oil City. Mr. Moyar was a member of the American Legion of Arlington, Va., Fraternal Lodge No. 483 in Rouseville, a 32nd Degree Mason of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry of the Valley of Washington, Orient of District of Columbia, and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans. Surviving are three sisters, Charlotte G. Farren of Williamstown, W.Va., Maryetta J. Snow and husband of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Helen P. Foster of Steubenville, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. Calvin Elmer Paugh, 78, of Tionesta, formerly of Sharon, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, in the VA Medical Center, Erie. Born July 31, 1926, in Vindex, Md., he was the son of Ira H. and Ethel May Paugh. Mr. Paugh was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. He loved the Tionesta area and loved to hunt and fish. Mr. Paugh was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Paugh. Surviving are two brothers, Frank Paugh of South Carolina and Claude Paugh and wife, Karen, of Wheatland; four nephews; one niece; and his long time companion, Minnie Engel of Tionesta. He was a 1966 graduate of Franklin High School and was a 1970 graduate of Grove City College with a degree in mechanical engineering. After college, Mr. Witherup served with the U.S. Navy as a radar technician in the Mediterranean Sea. He started employment in 1972 with Witherup Fabrication & Erection Inc. and in 1985, he became president of the company, a position he held to this day. Mr. Witherup was a certified installer and inspector in Pennsylvania of above ground storage tanks. He had served on the board of the Venango Economic Development Corp. He was very involved in the economic development of Venango County and was well-known for his generosity to numerous organizations. Mr. Witherup was a member of the Franklin Elks Lodge No. 110, the Franklin Moore Lodge and the Franklin Eagles. He enjoyed science, debating, reading scientific and technical manuals and spending time with his friends and family. Orville Raymond "Windy" Orton, 72, of Parker, died at 11:53 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004, in UPMC Northwest, Franklin, following an extended illness. Born July 26, 1932, in Allegheny Township, Butler County, he was the son of Orville D. and Violet Johns Orton. Mr. Orton graduated in 1950 from the former Parker High School. He then served as a member of the U.S. Army from Feb. 24, 1953, to Feb. 10, 1955, with the 82nd Airborne Division. He was honorably discharged with the rank of corporal. Mr. Orton was employed by the former Glass Containers Corp. of Parker for more than 17 years until ill health forced his early retirement. He was a life member of the Parker City Volunteer Fire Department, having served the department for more than 50 years, many of those years as an active fire policeman. He assisted with the fire company's Mother's Day dinners always in the kitchen on dish washing duty as long as health permitted. Mr. Orton attended the Church of God of Prophecy at Six Points and for many years was secretary of the Allegheny Cemetery Association of Allegheny Township. He was an avid NASCAR fan and especially was a fan of driver Bill Elliott. In addition to racing, he was well-known for his patience in woodcutting to make firewood for family and friends. Mr. Orton was married March 27, 1958, to Ramona O'Neil, who survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Tammy Thompson and husband, Robert, of Parker; one son, Bradley R. Orton and wife, Diane, of Parker; and four grandchildren, Amber Barger and husband, Cory, of Butler, Brittany Thompson and Andrew and Eric Orton, all of Parker. He also is survived by two sisters, Dorothy J. Hansotte of Butler and Opal Steff of Emlenton; one brother, Samuel M. Orton and wife, Lois, of Emlenton; and a number of nieces and nephews. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the H. Jack Buzard Funeral Home, Wayne Street, Parker, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Six Points Church of God of Prophecy, Route 58, east of Eau Claire. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the church with the Rev. Jay Croyle, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Allegheny Cemetery. Members of the VFW and American Legion of the Parker area will conduct a military service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Church of God of Prophecy at Six Points or to the QRS Department of Parker City Volunteer Fire Department.
