Charles Dale Alcorn Charles Dale Alcorn, 85, of 4065 Brookville Street, P.O. Box 244, Hawthorn, Clarion County, died at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004, at his home. Born Feb. 28, 1919, in Jefferson County, he was the son of the late John J. and Cleta Jane Huffman Alcorn. Mr. Alcorn was a veteran of World War II. He owned and operated the Charles D. Alcorn Funeral Home in Hawthorn for the past 58 years, a business he purchased from Mrs. Hardy (Anna) Sloan on May 29, 1946. Mr. Alcorn was involved in many organizations throughout his life. He was a charter member of the Hawthorn Lions club, a lifetime member of Hawthorn Volunteer Fire Department and a 50-year member of both the Masonic Lodge of New Bethlehem and the Coudersport Consistory. He was also a member of Hawthorn Presbyterian Church, where he was Sunday School treasurer and was on the church counsel. He was a member of the New Bethlehem Chamber of Commerce and Walter W. Craig Post 354 of the American Legion. He was a past member of Redbank Valley School Board and a founding member of the Hawthorn Area Water Authority. He was treasurer of the Clarion County Funeral Directors Association. Mr. Alcorn was the recipient of the Melvin Jones Award of Lions International. He enjoyed attending the men's prayer breakfast on Thursday mornings. He got the most enjoyment out of talking and sharing with his family and friends. He was a friend to anyone he met and a helping hand to anyone in need. Mr. Alcorn was known by many names including Chuck, Dale, George, Digger, Charlie and Chauncey. He was affectionately known as "Bup" by the people who knew him best. He was married Oct. 6, 1938, to the former Mary Elizabeth Spangler, and she survives. In addition to his wife of 66 years, he is survived by a daughter, Ethel G. Bullers of Hawthorn; three grandchildren, Candice Dale Powell and her husband, Donald, of Ringgold, Bradley Alcorn Bullers and his wife, Lori, of Hawthorn, and Tracy Lynn Franklin and her husband, David, of Punxsutawney; and five great-grandchildren, Courtney and Greg Bullers, Taylor and Jordyn Powell and Andrew Franklin. Along with his parents, Mr. Alcorn was preceded in death by four brothers, Daniel, Ernest, Mervin and Harry Alcorn; and his son-in-law, Bruce Bullers. Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the Charles D. Alcorn Funeral Home in Hawthorn. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Church of God, New Bethlehem. Interment will be in Hawthorn Cemetery. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to any of the local churches, Hawthorn Area Volunteer Fire Department, the New Bethlehem Library or a charity of choice. Earl R. Brosius Earl R. Brosius, 86, of Old Knox Road, Ashland Township, Knox, died at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004, at his home after a brief illness. Born June 18, 1918, in Heathville, Jefferson County, he was the son of John W. and Alda M. Reitz Brosius. Mr. Brosius was a U. S. Army veteran serving as a sergeant during World War II with the 203rd Field Artillery in Europe at the Battle of the Bulge. He served from February 1942 to October 1945 and received four Silver Stars and the Good Conduct Medal. He was employed by Owens Illinois glass plant in Clarion and retired after 41 years as a tank foreman. Mr. Brosius was of the Protestant faith. He was a member of the Quarter Century Club at Owens Illinois and was also a life member of the Pennsylvania chapter of Whitetails Unlimited. In his earlier years he enjoyed coon hunting and bowling. He also enjoyed golf and watching sports on television. He had a hobby of horses and farming and enjoyed hunting. He was married to Louise S. Kelley, Oct. 28, 1942, and she preceded him in death on Feb. 19, 1980. He is survived by two sons, Richard D. "Bear" Brosius of Knox and Brian Brosius and his wife, Valerie, of Clarion; two grandchildren, Bethany and Jason Brosius, both of Clarion; three brothers, Charles E. Brosius and his wife, Janet, of Corsica, Kenneth R. Brosius and his wife, Joyce, of Knox, and Kermit F. Brosius and his wife, Mary Ellen, of Leeper; and one brother-in-law, Kenneth D. Kelley and his wife, Norma, of Oil City. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Merle and James Brosius; and three sisters, Kathryn Silvis, Betty Brosius and Irma Jean Rhoades. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the David C. McEntire Funeral Home, Ohio and Penn Streets, Knox. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the funeral with the Rev. Harold O. Jacobson, pastor of Grace Lutheran Church in Clarion, officiating. Gates, 88, of 35 Burns Road, Sligo, died at 7:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 22, 2004, in the Clarview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center near Sligo after a short illness. Born Jan. 16, 1916, in Toby Township, Clarion County, she was the daughter of the late William E. and Sarah C. Greenawalt Saylor. Mrs. Gates was a homemaker and was of the Protestant faith. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting and working word-search puzzles. She was married Jan. 13, 1935, to Paul R. Gates, who died Nov. 16, 1995. Mrs. Gates is survived by a daughter, Phyllis J. Greenawalt of Sligo; a son, Richard Gates and his wife, Boneta, of Sligo; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Gates was the last surviving member of her immediate family. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Janet Carol; three sisters, Ruth and Mildred Myers and Adda McElhaney; and six brothers, Thomas, James, John, Arnold, Wilbur and Harry Saylor. Friends will be received from noon to 2 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Varner Funeral Home in Sligo. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the funeral home with the Rev. Helen Louise Harrison Helen Louise Harrison, 71, of Rehobeth Church Road, Clarion, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004, at Oak Hill Hospital, Spring Hill, Fla. Born July 24, 1933, in Clarion, she was the daughter of the late Charles Caldwell and Helen G. Detrick Beveridge. Mrs. Harrison was in food service and worked as a kitchen manager for 21 years for the state of New Jersey. She was a member of the Moose, Eagles and VFW clubs. She was married Sept. 23, 1950, in Clarion, to Kenneth W. Harrison, who preceded her in death on Nov. 28, 1979. Mrs. Harrison is survived by a son, Kenneth Harrison and his wife, Stacey, of Edison, N.J.; a daughter, Mary Helen Brandis and her husband, Paul, of Spring Hill, Fla.; seven brothers, Charles Beveridge and his wife, Evelyn, of Clarion, Dan Beveridge and his wife, Connie, of Arizona, Howard Beveridge and his wife, Jeannie, of New York, Tom Beveridge and his wife, Prudy, of Maryland, Bill Beveridge and his wife, Pauline, of Strattanville, Jim Beveridge and his wife, Sherry, of Corsica, and Dick Beveridge and his wife, Gloria, of Clarion; one sister, Mary Perry and her husband, Gary, of Clarion; five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a companion, Ray Sanderford. Hinderliter, 82, of Mayport RD 2, Redbank Township, Armstrong County, died at 2:25 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004, at Jefferson Manor, Brookville, following a brief illness. Born May 24, 1922, in Jefferson County, he was the son of Carl and Texas Minich Hinderliter. Mr. Hinderliter was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in Germany during World War II. He was the owner and operator of Hinderliter Trucking in North Freedom for 50 years. Mr. Hinderliter was a member of North Freedom United Methodist Church. He enjoyed fishing and feeding animals. He was married June 3, 1988, in North Freedom, to the former Mary Wiant, who survives. In addition to his wife, he is survived by son, J. McKeown, 56, of 22975 Titusville Road, Titusville, died at 11:53 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004, at Titusville Area Hospital. Born Dec. 21, 1948, at Fairhope, Ala., he was the son of David and India Prince McKeown. Rev. McKeown attended Bethany Nazarene College in Bethany, Okla. He was the pastor of Hilltop Christian Fellowship Church in Pleasantville. He was previously employed by Pennzoil and Wolf's Head as a plant manager for 18 years. He had also driven for Regal Services of Ripley, N.Y. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and woodworking. Rev. McKeown was married Dec. 28, 1968, in Titusville, to the former Sharon K. Holtz, who survives. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his parents of Titusville; two sons, Michael McKeown and his wife, Michelle, of Binghamton, N.Y., and Marc McKeown and his wife, Lisa, of Dempseytown; four grandchildren, Gabriel, London, Arial and Cameron McKeown; his father-in-law, George Holtz of Titusville; his sister-in-law, Dian McKeown of Hydetown; and two nephews, David and Aaron McKeown. Nellis, 83, of 1293 Grandview Road, Oil City, died at 4:05 a.m. Friday, Oct. 22, 2004, at Beverly Health Care- Oil City. Born Nov. 18, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Hugh B. and Ethel Patterson Graham. She was a resident of the Oil City area all her life and graduated in 1939 from Oil City High School. Mrs. Nellis was employed by W.T. Grant Co., Loblaws and retired from Jamesway after 14 years of service. She was a lifelong member of Reno United Methodist Church and Reno United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the ladies auxiliaries of the Salvation Army and Reno Volunteer Fire Department. Mrs. Nellis was married April 11, 1940, to Jerry E. Nellis Sr., who preceded her in death Sept. 4, 1995. Her survivors include a son, Jerry Nellis and his wife, Suzette, of Oil City; a daughter, Judith Flickner of Central City; five sisters, Marion Hagen and her husband, William, of Grafton, Ohio, Joan Slater and her husband, Lloyd W., of Columbus, Ga.; Susanne Williams and her husband, Larry, of Huston, Pa., Judith Fleckenstien and her husband, David, of Oil City, and Dorothy Stiller of Oil City; a brother, Donald Graham and his wife, Rose, of Pittsburgh; and six grandchildren, Kim Palanes and her husband, Alan, of Freedens, Kelly Maddy and her husband, Sam, of Cairnbrook, Rick Flickner of Windber, Rhonda Chappell of North Huntingdon, Michael Nellis and his wife, Kathy, of Clovis, N.M., and Amy Still and her husband, Jim, of New Oxford. She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren, Adam and Eric Maddy of Cairnbrook, Cassidy Chappell of North Huntingdon, Rachel and Michael Nellis of Clovis and Haley and Jack Still of New Oxford; a sister-in-law, Audine Nellis of Seneca; a brother-in-law, Fred Adams of Reno; and several nieces and nephews. Lena Lavina Moore Newell Lena Lavina Moore Newell, 87, of 1004 Grandview Road, Oil City, died at 2 a.m. Friday, Oct. 22, 2004, at UPMC Shadyside Hospital, Pittsburgh. Born Oct. 9, 1917, at German Hill in the Tionesta area, she was the daughter of the late Allen and Maude Alabaugh Moore. Mrs. Newell lived in the Oil City area most of her life and was a 1936 graduate of Oil City High School. She began her working career at the Corner Restaurant in Tionesta and rode the train from Oil City to Tionesta each week. During the week, she stayed with her uncle and aunt, Archie and Lena Hepler, whom she was named after. She later worked for GTE for more than 15 years and retired in 1980. For years, Mrs. Newell was active in the Oil City Salvation Army and held several offices in the Ladies Home League and the Girl Scouts. Along with her husband, she was very active in the Oakland Volunteer Fire Department and held several offices while residing in the Dempseytown area. She also enjoyed playing bingo. She was married April 30, 1940, to Chester E. Newell, and he survives. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Darrell Newell and his wife, Katie, of Cooperstown, and Ronald Newell and his wife, Judy, of Greencastle; two brothers, Allen "Junior" Moore of Arizona and Claude Moore of Oil City; three sisters, Wilda Lynn of Titusville, Deloris Hollowell of Alabama and Phyllis Lindsey of Warren; four grandchildren, Darlene Newell of Cooperstown, Lisa Garrison and her husband, Rob, of Chambersburg, Brian Newell and his wife, Amy, of Mercersburg, and Todd Newell of Greencastle; and two great-grandchildren, Emma Newell of Mercersburg and Brody Garrison of Chambersburg. Mr. Heasley was a veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theater with the First Army, 153rd Field Artillery. He was a former executive of Henry Crown & Co. and Prussian-Schloss, Inc. Surviving are his wife, the former Carolyn Clinger; five children, Marsha Heasley of McAlester, Okla., Kathleen Okmark and husband, Gannar, of Minooka, Ill., Janice Heinemann and husband, Mike, of Clarendon Hills, Ill., Charles Henry Heasley and wife, Arleen, of Darien, Ill., and Jean Heasley and husband, William Kalafut, of Westmont, Ill.; and 12 grandchildren. Henry, 79, of 1906 Penn Ave. E., Warren, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2004, at his residence. Born Oct. 21, 1924, in Sligo, he was the son of Gilbert Henry Sr. and Ressie Guntrum Henry. Mr. Henry served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was a member of the American Legion. He was a supervisor at Warren State Hospital for 35 years, retiring in 1977. Mr. Henry was instrumental in starting the union and credit union for Warren State Hospital, and he served on the fund-raising committee for the building of the Interfaith Chapel. He is survived by his wife, the former Betty Lee Lewis, whom he married April 12, 1946, in Martinsburg, W.Va. Also surviving are two sons, Robert Henry of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., and David Henry of New Port Richey, Fla.; three daughters, Elizabeth Henry of Mansfield, Mrs. William (Judith) Smith of Sugar Hill, Ga., and Mrs. Peter (Donna) Henry-Murphy of Tampa, Fla.; and eight grandchildren. He also is survived by two brothers, Robert Henry and Gilbert R. Henry Jr.; four sisters, Dorothy Faust, Dolores Fowler, Norma Lewis and Shirley Hoover; and several nieces and nephews. Born Aug. 8, 1942, in Titusville, she was the daughter of Emanuel and Rose V. Bertie Donini. She was a 1960 graduate of Redbank Valley School District, New Bethlehem. Mrs. McGregor was a legal secretary for 41 years, starting with the Robert B. Filson Law Office which later became the law office of Green & Bish and then Attorney Gerald Bish, all of New Bethlehem. After the death of Attorney Gerald Bish, she assisted in the transition, which led to the law offices of Attorney Scott Allen. She retired in December 2001. She was a member of the New Bethlehem Presbyterian Church. Mrs. McGregor loved spending time with family and friends and enjoyed gardening. She was an avid golfer. She was married in New Bethlehem June 6, 1964, to William Ellsworth McGregor, who survives. Also surviving are a sister, Flora Shick of New Bethlehem; a brother, Richard Donine and wife, Gale, of Mayport; numerous nieces and nephews; and a "special sister," Paulette Schultz. Mrs. McGregor was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Erma Sterner and Edith Gahagan; and one brother, Arthur Donine. Her love for children led her to employment at the Clarion Area High School cafeteria, the Clarion Free Public Library and as a crossing guard for Clarion Area Elementary School. She greatly enjoyed people and spent much time with her children, grandchildren and friends. She attended a monthly luncheon with her high school classmates who exchanged stories about the changes in Clarion over the years. She also enjoyed sitting on her front porch, watching and feeding the birds and visiting with neighbors. Mrs. Wenner was a 50-year member of First Presbyterian Church in Clarion and also was a member of the Order of Eastern Star. She was married to Donald E. Wenner, who died in 1961. Surviving are two children, Brenda W. Aravich and husband, Tom, of DuBois, and Thomas A. Wenner and wife, Delores, of Clarion; and four grandsons, Jason Wenner and wife, Amy, of Columbia, Md., Matthew Wenner of Clarion and Adam Aravich and David Aravich, both of DuBois. Mrs. Shakley was among the first group of patients transferred on the opening day to the new hospital, UPMC Northwest at Seneca. Born March 27, 1924, in Bruin, Butler County, she was the daughter of Henry C. and Frances Zagst Rose. During and after World War II, Mrs. Shakley was employed by the former Knox Glass Corp. in Parker. Later, she was employed by W.A. Moyer & Sons Level Works in Parker until the plant closed in the early 1980s. Mrs. Shakley was a member of St. Mary Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Parker. She was a longtime active member of the Altar-Rosary Society as well as chairwoman of the mercy dinners for many years. Along with her two daughters, Mrs. Shakley was instrumental in the operation of the food bank in the Parker Community Building until recent months when ill health prevented her participation. Mrs. Shakley was a member and past treasurer of the Ladies Auxiliary of Parker City Volunteer Fire Department. She also was a longtime member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Parker VFW Post No. 7073. She enjoyed growing beautiful flower gardens, nurturing potted floral plants and collecting any type of religious figurines. Mrs. Shakley first was married in 1943 to James Floyd "Curt" Sproull, who died in 1956. She then was married in 1963 to Dean R. Shakley, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Deana L. Shakley at home; one stepdaughter, Pam Olama of Orlando, Fla.; two sons, James Sproull of Richmond, Va., and Robert "Skip" Sproull of Kennesaw, Ga.; eight grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren. Mr. Burt worked as a clerk at Dairy Queen in Franklin. He was a member of the Four Square Church of the Living God, Franklin. Mr. Burt was an organ tissue eye donor. He enjoyed baking, pets, especially birds, plants and history. Mr. Cobbett was married in Carson City, Nev., April 3, 1953, to Maude Lucy Claque, who survives. Mrs. Droddy graduated from Clarion High School and attended two years of business school in Warren. She worked at Moore Funeral Home in Leeper, New Process in Warren, J.C. Penney in Clarion and the State Highway Department in Clarion. Most recently Mrs. Droddy was a housewife who enjoyed quilting, needlepoint, baking and feeding the birds. She was an avid Pirates, Steelers and Penguins fan. Mrs. Droddy was married in St. Joseph Church, Lucinda, Sept. 21, 1948, to Clarence Ray Droddy, who survives. Mrs. Graffius was a member of the Greenwood United Methodist Church and throughout her life, she was a committed, active church member. In her earlier years, she participated in a variety of civic and social organizations. She was a housewife and an intelligent well-spoken woman who was a voracious reader and reveled in the love of and for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mrs. Graffius was married Oct. 3, 1942, to George E. Graffius, who died Feb. 15, 1989. Surviving are a son, William Howard Graffius and wife, Beverly, of Gearhart, Ore.; nine grandchildren, George Edward Graffius III, Donald Martin Graffius, Julia Susanne Bilskie, Patrick Matthew Graffius, D'Arcy Ann Yerace, Megan Elizabeth Graffius, William Stuart Trafford Graffius, Graham Nightbear Fee and Willow Marie Fee; and seven great-grandchildren. Hanna Sr., 72, of 455 Meadow Road, Seneca, died at 12:54 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, 2004, in UPMC Northwest, Seneca. Born Feb. 23, 1932, in Oil City, he was the son of Jesse and Virginia Proper Hanna. Mr. Hanna graduated in 1950 from Cranberry High School and then worked at the glass plant. He attended several computer schools. He entered the U.S. Air Force in 1952 and served for 20 years. He was discharged in 1972 at March Air Force Base in Riverside, Calif. After his discharge, Mr. Hanna worked for Conair until 1987. Mr. Hanna enjoyed fishing and hunting, was an avid Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers fan, enjoyed watching sports on television and going to comedy shows and musicals. On Jan. 15, 1974, he married the former Sandra Lee Watson, who survives. Also surviving are three sons, John H. Hanna Jr. of Arizona, William R. Porath Jr. of Seneca and Donald J. Porath of Oil City; three daughters, Mrs. Bradley (Paulinda) Davidson of Georgia, Mishelle R. Fletcher of Saltsburg and Tina L. Bickel of Erie; and seven grandchildren, Jeremy Davidson stationed in Iraq, Tim Davidson and Keri Davidson of Georgia, Jami Porath of Titusville, Chad Fletcher of Oil City, Angel L. Fifth St., Oil City, died as the result of an automobile accident Friday, Oct. 15, 2004, along Route 8 near the Pepsi Bottling facility. Born Jan. 8, 1916, in Burma, he was the son of Charles F. and Aurie L. Prentise Mohr. Mr. Mohr was a 1934 graduate of Oil City High School, then graduated from Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, and received his master's degree from the University of Pittsburgh. He had worked for National Transit from 1937 to 1944 and Worthington from 1945 to 1947. In 1951 he started teaching for the Oil City School District and retired in 1979 as the department head of the Business Education Department. Mr. Mohr was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He also was a member of the Oil City Lions Club, Oil City Lodge No. 710, F. & A.M., Venango Lodge of Perfection, New Castle Consistory, Zem Zem Shrine, Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees, the Venango Chapter of Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees and Meals-on-Wheels. On June 25, 1944, he married the former Myrtis Karle, who also died in the same accident. Surviving are a daughter, Melissa Anne Mohr of Minneapolis, Minn.; a brother, John M. Mohr of Union City; and a sister, Nancy McDowell of Reno. In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Mohr was preceded in death by a sister, Yoma M. Yahner; a brother, Homer E. "Ted" Mohr; and a half brother, Robert Mohr. Myrtis Karle Mohr Myrtis Karle Mohr, 83, of 318 W. Mrs. Mohr was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, whom she married June 25, 1944. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the Morrison Funeral Home. Murphy Arthur L. Murphy, 76, of 210 Petroleum St., Oil City, died at 8:41 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, in UPMC Northwest, Seneca. Born Nov. 26, 1927, in Ellwood City, he was the son of Archie and Ivabelle Hunt Murphy. Mr. Murphy served in the U.S. Army with the Occupational Services in Japan. He graduated from Geneva College with a degree in engineering. Mr. Murphy first was employed at American Bridge in Ambridge and then went to work for U.S. Steel. In 1968 he went to work for Manion Steel Barrel where he became president. After retirement he volunteered his time in the Genealogy Room at the Oil City Library. He also enjoyed golfing and bowling. Mr. Murphy was a 36-year member of the Second Presbyterian Church where he served as both elder and trustee. He was married May 12, 1951, in Bell Memorial Presbyterian Church, Ellwood City, to the former Barbara Marion, who survives. Also surviving are four children, Lee Ann Donovan of Titusville, Brian Murphy of Oil City, Tom Murphy of Pembroke Pines, Fla., and Susan Rizzo and husband, Joe, of Oil City; his grandchildren, Melissa, Heather, Aaron and Ben and his wife, Mindy; and one great-grandchild Paiton. He also is survived by a sister, Jean Cates of Chapel Hill, N.C.; and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Roy and Pat Marion of Beaver. Mr. Murphy was preceded in death by his parents. Born March 2, 1914, in Pleasantville, he was the son of George Luther and Linnie Elizabeth Shaw. Mr. Shaw was owner of Shaw's Shoes in Franklin for 20 years, retiring in 1979. He also was the former owner of Shaw's Atlantic Gas Station in Franklin. He was a member of the Fox Street Church of God. Mr. Shaw was married June 15, 1939, to the former M. Marguerite Holtz, who survives. Mrs. Wetzel had been self-employed with her husband in Wetzel Bussing for the Keystone School District. She previously had worked at the D&M Market in Knox. She was a member of St. Mark Memorial Chapel in Kossuth. Mrs. Wetzel enjoyed cooking, sewing, crocheting, camping and her garden. She was married Sept. 25, 1940, to Charles "Paul" Wetzel, who died Jan. 24, 2002. Surviving are two daughters and their husbands, Barbara and Paul La Pierre Sr. if Knox RD and Kay and Dennis Zerbe of Knox; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Born Feb. 7, 1920, in Montoursville, she was the daughter of William Louis and Rosa Harriet Kaiser. Mrs. Winger was a homemaker and formerly was a food service employee at the former Victory Joint High School. She was a member of the Barkeyville United Methodist Church, Barkeyville, for the past 14 years and was particularly active in United Methodist Women, having served as secretary for many years. She was very involved in their mission outreach to the community, making bibs and lap robes for local nursing homes, hats and booties for AIDS babies and stuffed animals for the Pine Township Rescue Squad to use when escorting young children to the hospital. Mrs. Winger was well-known for her pumpkin pies and her homemade chocolate covered Easter eggs. She also provided homemade chili every year on election day for those who worked the polls all day in the Barkeyville Borough. She was married Sept. 22, 1943, to Samuel B. Winger, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Barry W. Winger and wife, Darlene, of Sharpsville and Russell W. Winger and wife, Betsy, of Transfer; four grandchildren, Melinda Wilbert, Rhonda Valez, Jill Fertig and Sean Winger; and six great-grandchidren, Haley Wilbert, Caitlyn Wilbert, Joshua Valez, Corey Valez, Chelsea Valez and Jenna Winger. She also is survived by four sisters, Mildred Bertha Kaiser of Florida, Mabel Marie Harris of Conneautville, Lillian Myrtle Lewis of Montoursville and Jean Carol Barber of Socorro, N.M.; and one brother, Don Robert Kaiser of Friendsville, Tenn. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Winger was preceded in death by four brothers, Harry Ellsworth Kaiser, Ralph Louis Kaiser, Emerson George Kaiser and Perry William Kaiser. Ashbaugh, 66, of Dayton, Ohio, formerly of Knox, died Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004, following a lengthy illness. Born Feb. 8, 1938, in St. Petersburg, he was the son of Cletus and Esther Plunkard Ashbaugh. He attended Pennsylvania State University where he earned a bachelor's degree in aeronautical engineering in 1960. He earned a master's degree in aerospace engineering in 1978 from the University of Dayton. Mr. Ashbaugh had a distinguished 44-year civil service career as an aerospace engineer with the U.S. Air Force at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. He began his career in 1960 as a young engineer, specializing in aircraft flight stability and controls. He quickly developed and applied his knowledge to projects that involved most aircraft in the U.S. Air Force ranging from the F-105 Thunderbolt in 1962 to the current generation of F-16 Fighting Falcons. He was also a specialist in the development of sophisticated Air Force air-launched missiles, both nuclear armed and conventional warhead configured. Mr. Ashbaugh worked on more than 10 such missile systems. Mr. Ashbaugh's engineering expertise and dedication have been instrumental in the security of the country during portions of the Cold War era and in the exhibition of the power of the Air Force in conflicts spanning the Vietnam era through Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He recently worked with organizations such as the Special Operations Forces to investigate conceptual and often novel solutions that would meet the future needs of shadow warriors. Mr. Ashbaugh's attitude, work ethic and technical knowledge will be missed by his colleagues and the Air Force, which he deeply loved. He was a member of the Penn State Club, serving as treasurer for more than 30 years. He was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church in Dayton and attended Salem United Church of Christ in Lamartine. Mr. Ashbaugh was a multi-gallon blood donor, having donated more than 50 gallons of blood. He was an avid deer hunter and fisherman, and he also enjoyed gardening, especially growing lilies. He is survived by his mother, Esther Ashbaugh of Knox; his sister, Velma Baker and her husband, George, of Lamartine; a brother, Richard Ashbaugh and his wife, Patricia, of Cranberry; four nieces, Susan Botts of Frederick, Md., Karen Baker of Lamartine, Cheryl Anwar of Pittsburgh and Eileen Ashbaugh of Clintonville; a nephew, Anthony Baker of Erie; two great-nieces and one great-nephew. She suffered an apparent heart attack earlier in her home. Born May 10, 1952, in Shippenville, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Viola "Birdie" Colwell Salsgiver. Mrs. Glas attended the Franklin and Oil City schools. She was married to William Glas, who survives. Also surviving are three sons, Frank Glas of Butler, Richard Glas and Carrie of Seneca and William Glas and Wanda of North Carolina; and two grandchildren, Savanna and Mckynna Glas. She also is survived by two brothers, Jim Salsgiver of Titusville and Ed Salsgiver of Warren; one sister, Mary Jane Lawrence of Oil City; three half sisters, Donna Salsgiver of California, Mary Kunselman of Franklin and Elizabeth Rockwell of Clarion; and a half brother, Fred Davis of Jackson, Ky. Hanby Jr., 76, (U.S. Army Ret.), died of lung cancer Saturday, July 31, 2004, at his residence in Austin, Texas. Born July 9, 1928, and reared on the family farm near Kossuth, he was the son of J. Byron Hanby Sr. and Erma Sayers Hanby. After graduation from Ashland Consolidated School, he attended Clarion State Teachers College and Penn State. While at Penn State, he participated on the varsity boxing team and the Penn State Blue Band. He was a member of Alpha Gamma Roe fraternity. Col. Hanby received a bachelor of science degree in 1950 in agricultural education and taught one year at Sandy Lake High School before entering the Army. Upon completion of basic training, Col. Hanby was selected for Officers Candidate School at Fort Sill, Okla. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1951 in the artillery branch. During the Korean War, he served as an artillery forward observer until his capture by enemy forces. He was imprisoned from September 1952 until his repatriation at the end of the war in 1953. During the course of his military career, Col. Hanby received a master of arts degree from Babson Institute, Babson Park, Mass. Other completed training included courses at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland; Armed Forces Special Weapons at Albuquerque, N.M.; graduation from the Command and General Staff College; and the Army War College in Carlisle. Military assignments included commander of the 15th Ordnance Battalion, Darmstadt, Germany; Commander of the 23rd Special Weapons Co.; assistant to the Director of Procurement and Production in WECOM headquarters; project manager for the 155mm Close Support Artillery Weapon System; Deputy Commander, Rock Island Arsenal, Illinois; and project manager for the HELLFIRE laser guided weapon system at Army Missile Command. Col. Hanby concluded his military career as Deputy Commandant of the Defense Systems Management College. Col. Mr. Hartle worked as a carpenter and independent contractor and then worked as a carpenter for Rhea Lumber in Clarion for 20 years until he retired. Pfendler David C. Pfendler, 48, of North Market Street, Berwick, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004, in Berwick Hospital Center. Born Sept. 2, 1956, in Oil City, he was the son of Norman and Dorothy Lauer Pfendler. He was a 1974 graduate of North Clarion High School and attended the Naval Academy in Saratoga, N.Y., where he took classes in nuclear engineering. Mr. Pfendler was an MMI in the U.S. Navy for seven years, helping to build the first nuclear submarine in Trident, Ohio. He was employed as a foreman for PPL. Mr. Pfendler was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Berwick and was a former Boy Scout leader and CCD teacher at St. Mary Catholic Church in Berwick.. He also was a member of the Beach Haven Salem Township Fire Co. Mr. Pfendler had interest in the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman . Surviving are his mother, Dorothy Pfendler of Highland Oaks, Shippenville; his wife of 26 years, Cathy J. Pfendler; a daughter, Mary Ann Pfendler of Berwick; and a son, David Michael Pfendler of Killeen, Texas. He also is survived by three sisters, Dorothy Weaver and husband, Dave, of Marble, Darleen Hartle and husband, Robert, of Clarion and Jean Gates and husband, Paul, of Jefferson, Md.; and two brothers and their wives, Norman and Bonnie Pfendler of Franklin and Leo and Sherry Pfendler of Drummond, Mont. Mr. Pfendler was preceded in death by his father and one sister, Deborah C. Allio. Born Dec. 28, 1909, in Tidioute, she was the daughter of William M. and Emma Gustafson Pyles. She attended the Oil City area schools and attended Welch's Business College in Oil City. Miss Pyles worked as a bookkeeper for Borland Lumber Co., Grandview Supply and Strickland Construction in Oil City throughout her life. She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Oil City and the United Methodist Women of the church. Miss Pyles also belonged to the Oil City YWCA. Surviving are several cousins. Miss Pyles was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Grace Pyles. Rodgers Sr., 84, of Second Street, Cooperstown, died at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004, at his residence. Born April 14, 1920, in Cooperstown, he was the son of Guy M. and Alice Rebecca Rogers Rodgers. Mr. Rodgers was a member of the last graduating class of Cooperstown High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and the Korean War. Mr. Rodgers was self-employed as a barber, tax preparer and notary public. He was a member of the Cooperstown United Methodist Church. Mr. Rodgers was active as a motorcyclist and airplane pilot. He was married Sept. 18, 1948, to Evelyn Gertrude Wescott, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Gary L. Rodgers and wife, Judi, of Meadville and Samuel G. Rodgers Jr. and wife, Janet, of Cooperstown; two daughters, Linda A. Rodgers and Sandra M. Meyer and husband, Jeffrey, all of Cooperstown; and eight grandchildren, Gary Rodgers and wife, Marisa, of Huntersville, N.C., Heather Miller and husband, Paul, of Cochranton; David Rodgers and wife, Cindy, of Cairo, Neb., Lisa Meyer, Jeff Meyer, Michael Meyer and Nikki Meyer, all of Cooperstown, and Jeremy Hitchcock of Waterford. He also is survived by a brother, John Rodgers and wife, Pat, of Cooperstown. Perry St., Titusville, died at 6:20 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004, in Southwoods Assisted Living Community, Titusville. Born May 9, 1928, in Youngstown, Ohio, he was the son of Abraham and Julia Crow Sauber. He was a graduate of Youngstown Rayen High School and later earned a bachelor of science and electrical engineering degree in 1950 from Ohio State University. While a student at Ohio State, Mr. Sauber joined ROTC in the signal corps and served in the reserves from 1946 to 1950. Mr. Sauber was employed from 1950 to 1954 as an engineer with Westinghouse in Detroit. He then moved to Titusville and became a broadcaster and owner of WTIV radio station. In 1955, he opened another radio station WFRA and in the early 1970s opened WVEN. He retired from the radio industry in 2000. He was a member of the Tree of Life Synagogue in Oil City. Mr. Sauber served on the board of directors for the Titusville Area School District, former Penn Bank, and also was a past president for the Titusville Area Redevelopment Authority, Titusville Area Hospital, Pennsylvania American Heart Association, Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters, and French Creek Council Boy Scouts of America. He was married in St. Titus Rectory July 15, 1959, to the former Mary Phillips, who died Oct. 9, 1998. Surviving are two sons, Alan C. Sauber and wife, Laurie, of Charlotte, N.C., and Thomas J. Sauber and wife, Kelley, of Titusville; one daughter, Juliann M. Dibble and husband, Jeffrey, of Columbia, Md.; and eight grandchildren, Amy and Nathan Sauber of Charlotte, N.C., Jacob, Samuel, Elijah and Noah Sauber of Titusville, and Olivia and Adeleine Dibble of Columbia, Md. He also is survived by one brother: James William Sauber of Marble Falls, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the Gordon B.
