She and Thomas were buried in the Matildaville Cemetery, Perry Twp., Clarion Co., PA. She was a sister to my 2nd gr. grandmother Elizabeth Keister Davis - the wife of James Davis and they lived in Callensburg also. I have wondered if Edward was their son also. Jessie Mason Galbraith Jessie Mason Galbraith, 86, of Farmington, Conn., died Friday, Oct. 29, 2004, at New Britain General Hospital in Connecticut. She was born Jan. 15, 1918, in Richmond Hill, Queens, New York, and was a lifelong resident of Jackson, N.J., before moving to Farmington. Mrs. Galbraith attended the Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in New York City and was employed as a secretary at Anheuser-Busch in Newark, N.J., for many years prior to her retirement. She was the wife of the late John W. Galbraith. Mrs. Galbraith is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Wendy K. and Andrew K. Zurstadt of Unionville, Conn.; a son and daughter-in-law, Dennis M. and Sally S. Kaiser of Dillon, Colo.; and a grandson, Colin A. Zurstadt of Unionville, Conn. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be celebrated at The Gables in Farmington, Conn. Private burial will be in Franklin Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Veterans of Foreign Wars Foundation, VFW National Headquarters, 406 West 34th St., Suite 514, Kansas City, Mo., 64111. The Vincent Funeral Home, 120 Albany Turnpike, Canton, Conn., is in charge of arrangements. Robert Edwin Kugler Robert Edwin Kugler, 87, a lifelong resident of Oil City, died at 4:09 a.m. Friday, Oct. 29, 2004, at Beverly Healthcare in Oil City. Born Jan. 14, 1917, he was a son of Frederick E. and Greta Barras Kugler. Mr. Kugler graduated from Oil City High School in 1935. In order to help support his family, he began to work immediately as a tool and die maker at Oilwell Supply Co. In the late 1940s, he entered the sales field at Wayside Furniture. He then moved on to Michaels Furniture, then to manager positions at the J.C. Penney furniture department and Veachs Furniture. In 1966, along with Richard Kugler, he launched Kugler Brothers home improvement business, which continued until their retirement in 1988. Mr. Kugler was the Oil City civil defense director for a number of years, beginning in 1960. He served as an authorized American Red Cross instructor beginning in 1967. He also worked as a volunteer tour guide on the Oil Creek and Titusville Railroad and as an auxiliary policeman for Oil City for some years, logging more than 100,000 miles on motorcycle patrol. Mr. Kugler's fascination with woodworking attracted many people to his home, which was a wonderland for visitors of all ages. It was filled with countless working, handmade models of everything from vehicles, toys, houses, fish, games, puzzles and illusions to a working model of an oil lease. Until his heart attack in December 2003, he was a regular user of the Justus bicycle trail, accumulating more than 20,000 miles. In his trademark jumpsuit, he could often be found at the River Ridge gate entertaining visitors with stories of the past. He is survived by a sister, Greta Webber of Reno, Nev.; a niece, Mary Exley of Oil City; and a nephew, Stephen Kugler of Flagstaff, Ariz. In his later years, he found support and encouragement from his niece-in-law, Deborah Kugler, whom he referred to as Dr. Debbie, and a cousin, Bill Bowen. Mr. Kugler was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Kenneth and Richard; a sister-in-law, Lois Kugler; and a nephew, Noel Kugler. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. The Morrison Funeral Home in Oil City is in charge of arrangements. Maurice Jerome Licht Maurice Jerome Licht, 79, of 103 Walnut St., Tionesta, died at 4:45 a.m. Friday, Oct. 29, 2004, in Titusville Area Hospital following an extended illness. The Leo N. Hennes Funeral Home, 203 East Main St., Titusville, is in charge of arrangements. A complete obituary will be published Monday in The Derrick. Myrtle L. McGinty Myrtle L. McGinty, 95, formerly of 423 Elk St., Franklin, died at 3:15 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, 2004, in the Harley Manor care facility in Springfield. A daughter of Joseph and Elsie Klein Dittman, she was born in Knox on Aug. 26, 1909. She attended public schools in Knox. Mrs. McGinty was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Patrick Church. She was married Sept. 30, 1934, to Joseph P. McGinty, who preceded her in death on May 23, 1980. Surviving are two daughters, Judith Wagner and her husband, Michael, of Eldersburg, Md., and Maureen Phelan of Newtown Square. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Mrs. McGinty was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Joseph P. McGinty Jr.; a son-in-law, Dr. Thomas Phelan; and 10 brothers and sisters. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in the Huff Chapel, 312 West Park St., Franklin. A vigil service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Monday in the funeral home. David Clyde Newell David Clyde Newell, 98, of Ocala, Fla., died at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 29, 2004, at the Oakwood Nursing Center in Ocala. Mr. Newell moved to Ocala in July 2001. Born Oct. 22, 1906, in Beulah, W.Va., he was a son of John James Wesley Newell and Jennie Glover Mahood Newell Hotaling. He graduated from the Salvation Army Training College in 1930. After serving for six years as a Salvation Army officer, Mr. Newell returned to the Oil City area where he worked for Oilwell Supply. He retired from Penelec in 1971. Mr. Newell joined the Oil City Kiwanis Club in 1971 and became a life member on Dec. 8, 1977. He was a Kiwanis district lieutenant governor from 1974-1976 and again in 1991. Mr. Newell had been a 32nd Degree Mason since 1972 and served as chaplain and choir director. He was also involved with the AARP and RSVP, Meals on Wheels and Mostly Brass. He served 14 years with the Area Agency on Aging as president and chairman of the council. He was also involved with Family Service and Children's Aid Society, serving five years as a financial advisor. Active in musical organizations, Mr. Newell was director of the Polk State School Band for 10 years and the Reno Community Band for five years. The Salvation Army Band was under his leadership for approximately 50 years, and he also served as Sunday School teacher during that time. He was the recipient of the Gold Deed Award on April 22, 1975. His hobbies included hunting, camping and traveling. On May 15, 1929, he was married to Freeda Belle Dolby in the Oil City Salvation Army citadel. She preceded him in death. Survivors include three daughters, Betty Lyons, Mary Lou Marshall and Viola Newell, all of Ocala; a son, David Newell, of Strongville, Ohio; three brothers, Chester Newell of Oil City, Clayton Newell of Green Pond, N.J., and Harry Newell of Nanuet, N.Y.; five grandchildren, Linda Lyons Brown, Raymond Marshall Jr., Leanna Rae Marshall Conant, Ingrid Newell Perruchon and Amy Newell Hold, and 10 great-grandchildren, Jami Marshall, Kassandra Marshall, Jennifer Conant, David Robert Perruchon, Christopher Perruchon, Leah Perruchon, Max Martin, Tara Martin, James Holt and Amanda Holt. In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Newell was preceded in death by two grandsons, Michael Marshall and Ronald Robert Lyons; and siblings Jennie Newell Walls, William Newell, John Newell, Orpha Newell Orr, Alonzo Newell, Elmer Newell and Mildred Newell Green. Nancy J. Stanley Shontz Nancy J. Stanley Shontz, 65, of 1734 State Route 227, Oil City, died at 3:17 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, 2004, at her home, surrounded by her children, after a heroic battle with cancer. Born Dec. 15, 1938, in Oil City, she was a daughter of Andrew and Maxine Miller Stanley. Both preceded her in death. Mrs. Shontz was employed as a car hop at Nelson's Drive-In, First Seneca Bank, Quaker State, Weaver Buick, Dollar General and Baker Auto Parts. She attended the First Church of God in Oil City. She was known as an excellent mother and friend to all her children and grandchildren. Surviving are four daughters, Tambra Eismont and her husband, Michael, Dara Shontz and Sally Shontz , all of Oil City, and Marlene Aylesworth and her husband, Bob, of Franklin; a son, Andrew Shontz of Decatur, Ga.; seven grandchildren, Angela Eismont, Tina Eismont, Matt Myers and his wife, Amanda, Michelle Krosnicki, Danielle Smith and Mark Smith all of Oil City, and Sarah Aylesworth of Franklin; a great-grandson, Jordan Eismont of Oil City; several nieces and nephews, and special friends, Priscilla Eck and Helen Sutley. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Irene and John "Sharkey" Rehberg. McGuire Loreda M. McGuire, 85, of Allison Road, Clarion, Limestone Township, died at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2004, at her home following a brief illness. Born March 30, 1919, in Summerville, she was the daughter of John T. and Mary Emily Bird Thomas. Mrs. McGuire was a member of the Limestone Baptist Church She was a homemaker and enjoyed baking cookies and bread and visiting with her children and grandchildren. Mrs. McGuire was married July 3, 1935, to Harry W. "Mickey" McGuire, who died July 8, 1991. Surviving are five daughters, Mary Henry of New Bethlehem, Pat Eaker of Sligo, Deanna Sphakoff and husband, Ed, of Clarion and Jean Sphakoff and husband, Mal, all of Clarion, and M. Kay Dreihaup and husband, Gary, of Tionesta; four sons and their wives, Harry O. and Carol McGuire of Clarion RD 2, Fred M. and Lynn McGuire of Sigel, J. Dennis and Marilyn McGuire and D. Lee and Sherri McGuire, all of Clarion; 38 grandchildren; 63 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She also is survived by two sisters, Mary Louise Wolfe of Brookville and Gen Hildebrand of Summerville. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. McGuire was preceded in death by two sons, an infant Timothy and Calvin McGuire; one great-grandchild, Brendon Blair; three sons-in-law, Reeves Henry, Robert Allen and Charles "Joe" Eaker; four brothers; and six sisters. McLaughlin, 57, of 8 Petroleum St., Oil City, died at 2:05 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004, in UPMC Northwest, Seneca. Born Aug. 28, 1947, in Oil City, he was the son of Jarmila Plechacova McLaughlin Maiorana and the late Philip A. McLaughlin. His family moved in 1950 to Pittsburgh where he graduated in 1965 from Peabody High School. He then attended Clarion University where in 1972 he received his bachelor of arts in sociology/anthropology, in 1979 he receive his bachelor of arts and sciences in accounting and in 1984 he received his master's in business administration, summa cum laude. From 1981 to 1986, Mr. McLaughlin went from temporary into full time instructor in accounting at Clarion University. Mr. McLaughlin also worked as manager/projectionist at the Cranberry Mall Cinemas. He also was the startup manager for various cinemas located in Pennsylvania and Ohio. He retired due to an eye sight disability after working 10 years as an auditor for the Pennsylvania State Department of Banking. Mr. McLaughlin then became very active for the causes of the handicapped in Venango County where he was well respected and liked. Surviving are his mother and stepfather, Jarmila and John Maiorana of Pittsburgh; and a stepson, John Knakal of St. Louis, Mo. Born May 24, 1939, in Pitch Pine in the Shippenville area, she was the daughter of the late John W. and Viola Burchett Sharpe. She was married June 5, 1960, to Jack E. Battin Sr., who died Oct. 17, 1971. She lived and worked in Venango County before moving in 1987 to Bradenton. She loved to travel the country seeing new and fascinating sights and had many friends in the area with whom she would gather to talk, dance and share. Surviving are four children, Jack E. Battin Jr., Brian K. Battin, Edith K. Battin and Faith A. Taylor; six grandchildren, Robert C. and Melanie A. Taylor, Joshua J. and Amanda K. Battin, Keith A. Battin and Danielle N. Curran; and two great-grandchildren, Meralus E. Ponce and Alexandria M. Moore. Also surviving are a brother, Hubert Sharpe; and three sisters, Dorothy Becker, V. Fern Carlson and Joan Sharpe. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, John E. Sharpe, Walter K. Sharpe and Charles F. Sharpe; and a sister, Nora Sharpe. Lucile Rosen Lucile Rosen, 90, of Clearwater, Fla., formerly of Largo, Fla., died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004, in Mease Hospital Countryside, Safety Harbor, Fla. Born Dec. 29, 1913, in Venango County, she was the daughter of Rulif James and Katherine Elizabeth Pettit Beach. Mrs. Rosen moved to Largo in 1957 from Meadville. She and her husband owned the Rosen Studio in Largo. Mrs. Rosen was a member of the Common Cause of Clearwater. She was a Protestant. Mrs. Rosen was married for 61 years to Leonard Rosen, who preceded her in death. Surviving are a son, Mark Rosen of Clearwater; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Born Aug. 27, 1928, in Titusville, he was the son of Delmar and Neva Dailey Williams. Mr. Williams attended the former Henderson Grade School and Titusville Junior and Senior High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in January 1946 and served 18 months in the states and in Germany as a radio operator until his honorable discharge in 1947. After his discharge, Mr. Williams and his brother, Pat, opened Williams Service Station & Wrecker Service in Titusville. He was employed from February 1960 to 1980 by the Titusville Police Department. He also was employed at Peebles Motors until his retirement due to ill health. Mr. Williams was a member of the Pleasantville United Methodist Church. He was a former member of the Bruce Shorts Post No. 5958 VFW. Mr. Williams enjoyed hunting and golfing. He was married in Titusville June 26, 1953, to Twila Crawford, who survives. Also surviving are two sons and their wives, Denny and Amy Williams and Mark and Debbie Williams, all of Titusville; a granddaughter, Tess; and two stepgrandchildren, A.J. and Kristin MacQuarrie.     3. My parents own the property in Knox where there was to be a Catholic Church. I believe it probably was the one mentioned in Caldwell's Atlas, 1877, named St. Ann's. Would any one know any of the history of this church? Would there be a description or picture of the church? I live in KS and would very much like to find out about it. But I am not sure yet. Frederick was born in Ohio in 1861 and I have found a family on the 1880 census from Erie, Ohio with those names. According to family lore they had not been in the country very long, having come from either Alsace Lorain or Germany.... Let me know if any of this sounds familiar to you...

In her early years, Mrs. Plants worked at the former Sandy Lake Hotel. She retired in 1976 after 20 years of service in the dietary department at Polk State School and Hospital, now Polk Center. Mrs. Plants belonged to the New Lebanon Community Church for 71 years and was recognized last year as the oldest living member of the church. She also served on the Ladies Aid Society. She was a member of the former Princess Rebekah Lodge No. 442 of Sandy Lake. Since her retirement Mrs. Plants had been sewing quilts for all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed gardening and her many flowers, canning and watching the birds, and especially spending time with her great-grandchildren. Mrs. Plants was married March 19, 1938, to A. Seman Plants, who died April 27, 1997. Surviving are two sons, Louis S. Plants and wife, Sue, of Monument, Colo., and Robert E. Born May 23, 1930, in Johnstown, he was the son of John and Margaret Keim Bee. Mr. Bee graduated in 1948 from Ferndale High School in Johnstown. He was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force during the Korea Conflict, serving from 1950 to 1953. Mr. Bee was in the contracting business in Florida before retiring to Tionesta in 1990. He had been employed for 13 years by the Flying "W" Ranch of Kellettville as an equestrian trail guide. He was a member of the Kellettville Sportsman's Club and the Kellettville Shuffleboard League. Mr. Bee first was married in Tampa, Fla., April 4, 1980, to Nancy K. Longfellow, who died Oct. 22, 1995. He then was married in Tionesta June 24, 2000, to Karla S. Marshall, who survives. Also surviving are one stepson, Mathew K. Marshall of Tionesta; one stepdaughter, Cynthia Garcia and her husband, Jaun, of Miami, Fla.; two stepgranddaughters, Valerie and Jacquelyn Garcia, both of Miami; and several nieces and nephews. Davis, 87, of 1401 Morris St., Sligo, died at 2:02 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 24, 2004, in the Intensive Care Unit of Clarion Hospital. Born Sept. 27, 1917, in Clarion, he was the son of Charles M. and Minerva McKinley Davis. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II, serving from 1944 to 1946 with the rank of sergeant in the European Theater of Operations. He served in the 80th Infantry Division as a squad leader in combat. He received the Combat Infantry Badge, Good Conduct Medal, ETO Ribbon with three Battle Stars and the Purple Heart. He served with the 102nd Division as provost sergeant over regiment military police. Mr. Davis owned and operated the Davis Fountain Store in Sligo for 15 years. He also worked for the Bureau of Traffic Safety Examiner Office of Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Sligo Methodist Church. Mr. Davis was a member of the Parker VFW Post No. 7073 and the Sligo Sportsmen's Club. He enjoyed hunting and golfing. Mr. Davis was married May 26, 1938, to Virginia Meier, who died Nov. 19, 2003. Surviving are a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Davis was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two sisters and three brothers. There will be no public visitation. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Sligo Methodist Church with the Rev. Rick Russell, pastor, officiating. Mrs. Filer had resided for 75 years in her former home on Hatwick Road, Pardoe, Findley Township. Born Nov. 13, 1901, in Pardoe, she was the daughter of Peter J. and Mary Ann Amhoff Kolb. Mrs. Filer was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Mercer. She was a life member of St. Hermengilds Catholic Church in Pardoe until its closing and was a member of the Rosary-Altar Society of that church. She was a homemaker and was active in the Homemakers Club of Findley Township. Mrs. Filer was married Sept. 29, 1920, to Joseph Enoch Filer Sr., who died Oct. 11, 1969. Surviving are nine children, Mary Eleanor Mirda of Mesa, Ariz., Marjorie Ann Cross and husband, Reed, of Fairview, Patricia Lee McDannel and husband, John A., of DuBois, Virginia Marie Filer of Pardoe, Judith Lynne Messina and husband, Michael R., of Harrisville, David J. Filer and wife, Doris, of Stoneboro and Joseph E. Filer and wife, Virginia M., Robert L. Filer and wife, Helen M., and Merle E. File and wife, Sara M., all of Grove City; 26 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. She also is survived by a sister, Mary V. Warner or Grove City. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Filer was preceded in death by an infant son, Peter Filer; one sister, Laura Magargee; and two brothers , John and Paul Kolb. Laurie Arlene (Clay) Hall Laurie Arlene (Clay) Hall, 42, of Tionesta, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004, at the home of her sister and brother in-law in Oil City after losing a seven-year battle with breast cancer. Born Aug. 12, 1962, in Oil City, she was the daughter of Betty Head Hall, with whom she resided at Tidioute RR 1, and the late Donald E. "Gene" Hall Sr. She graduated in 1981 from West Forest High School, Tionesta, then from Robert Morris Business College in Pittsburgh. She previously had been employed by National Fuel Gas Co. of Titusville, the Forest Area School District, MCI of Winchester, Ky., and most recently by Monessen Hearth Systems in Paris, Ky., before moving back to the area. She was a member of the Tionesta Presbyterian Church and was a troop leader for Girl Scout Troop No. 715 of West Hickory. She was active in volunteer work in the West Forest Elementary School. In addition to her mother, she is survived by the joy of her life, her 8-year-old daughter, Sarah, and her faithful friend and companion, her dog, Sam. Also surviving are three brothers, Donald E. Schmude, 79, died at 6:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 24, 2004, at the residence of his daughter, Joyce Tobin, in Titusville. Born May 18, 1925, in Seneca, he was the son of Ernest J. and Mary Helen Smith Schmude. He attended Cranberry area schools. Mr. Schmude was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. He entered the service July 30, 1943, in Erie and was an aircraft and engine mechanic. He received the American Campaign Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged with the rank of corporal April 30, 1946, at Fort Dix, N.J. He was employed as a millwright for 50 years by the Greater Pennsylvania Regional Council of Carpenters. In addition, he and his wife owned and operated the Pizza Villa and later the Grand Slam Café in Titusville. Mr. Schmude was a member of the Cleo J. Ross Post No. 368 American Legion, the Bruce Shorts Post No. 5958 VFW and the Moose Club. He was an avid Steelers fan and enjoyed watching NASCAR. Mr. Schmude was married in Oil City Nov. 15, 1947, to Eunice G. Hall, who died Nov. 15, 1997. Surviving are four children, Joyce A. Tobin and her significant other, Butch Henry, of Titusville, Jeffrey A. Schmude and wife, Nan, of Erie, James A. Schmude and wife, Peggy, of Port Saint Lucie, Fla., and Jon A. Schmude and wife, Patti, of Oil City;13 grandchildren, Jeremy Tobin of Titusville, Kelly Tobin of Venus, Dillon Tobin of Titusville, Ian Tobin, a student at Grove City College, Nicole Schmude of Leeper, Natile Schmude of Newmansville, Jacob Schmude of Tempe, Ariz., Alex Schmude, Lucas Schmude of Erie, William Schmude, stationed with the military in Germany, Jamie Schmude of Port Saint Lucie, Fla., Brandon and Jordan Schmude of Oil City; and five great-grandchildren. He also is survived by three sisters, Ruth Blair of Rockland, Lois Swartsfager and husband, Edward, of Oil City and Sandy Hinebaugh and husband, Robert, of Okeechobee, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Monroe St., Titusville, 16354. Ernest L. Taylor Ernest L. Taylor, 67, of Tionesta, died Saturday evening, Oct. 23, 2004, at his home after an extended illness. He had lived in the Tionesta area since 1971. Born March 4, 1937, in Pulaski, he was the a son of the late H. Leroy and Esther Biddle Taylor. Mr. Taylor was a graduate of the Ross Leffler School of Conservation in Brockway and had been a wildlife conservation officer with the Pennsylvania Game Commission, retiring in 1993. He also served five years in Monroe County. He was an avid trapper, hunter, fisherman and an arrowhead knapper. Surviving are his wife Nancy Fox Taylor; two daughters, Mrs. Buck ( Sue ) Gilbert of Pleasantville and Brenda Taylor of Tionesta; and two sons, Rodney Taylor and Ralph Taylor, both of Tionesta; and seven grandchildren. He also is survived by a brother, George Taylor of New Wilmington. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Word of Grace Church, German Hill, Tionesta, with the Rev. John Mlakar officiating. Interment of Mr. Taylor's cremains will be in Riverside Cemetery, Tionesta. The family suggests memorials be made to the Tionesta Ambulance Service or to the Tionesta Library.
