The LDS films 1315276 through 1315282 contain a general index to registers' and Orphans' Court records for Clarion County, as well as copies of will docket books A-K. Unfortunately, all of the records that I was interested in are part of the "register's docket", which (at least to my knowledge) has not been microfilmed. Jacob Baum, Robert Clark, Seamon Shuman, Andrew Osman, and Gideon Williams (a Welshman) were other pioneers in different sections of the town. Peter Klock, who settled the Daniel Dungelberger place, is reported to have come into the neighborhood about 1775. The first grave-yard was opened on the John Schrob farm. The first school-house was built in 1805, and a school taught by a man named Hein. George Maurer kept the first store in Klingerstown, about 1811. John Reed built the first hotel in 1803, and sold it in 1804 to Jacob Wiest, by whom it was kept for many years. The next hotel was built by Jacob Stenner in 1812, and it is now standing and owned by John Wiest. It was not until 1840 that a practicing physician, named John Piffer, settled in Klingersotwn. The post-office in this place was established in 1850, and mails delivered once a week by way of Reading and Sunbury. The old post road ran near the present road to Sunbury, and was abandoned when the latter was built. The war with Great Britain in 1812 sent the recruiting sergeant to this quiet hamlet, and of the townspeople Sebastian Zimmerman, Jacob Wolfgang, John Kline, Abraham Zimmerman, Solomon Zimmerman, Henry Klock, George Geist, Henry Maurer and Adam Slobig enlisted, serving about four months at York, Pa., and Baltimore, Md. Klingerstown contains at present two hotels, one store, blacksmith shop, school-house, and five or six dwelling-houses. In 1830 the township contained 1,151 inhabitants; in 1840, 1,291; 1850, 1,656; 1860, 786; 1870, 761. The decrease was due to the reduction of its area by the erection of other townships from it. SCHOOLS. The conservatism of its people make Upper Mahantongo the last township in the county, and one of the last in the State, to accept the provisions of the present school laws, and not until the year 1865 were the educational interests of the town placed under its operations. Well adapted for grazing and the culture of roots and fruits, the township needs only the infusion of the fresh young blood, quickened by contact with its fellows, that is rapidly replacing the ultra caution and suspicion of its older inhabitants, to speedily bring it into the front ranks of the farm towns of the Schuylkill region. There was in 1880 but one church organization in town. This, known as Schwalm's church, has an edifice near the center of the township. Schwalm Union Church was organized in 1820, its meetings being held in the old log school-house near where the church now stands. Among its first members were John, Henry and George Maurer, Jacob Dressler, Jacob Bechtel, George Estman, Jacob Stagg, Neitling, Thomas and George Henninger, Peter Jacob Luck- ney, Henry Knorr, Adam Herb, George and Peter Schleyer, ____________end page 356.____________ page 357 NOTES ON GEORGE jR. 1778,1780, 1782,1785, 1787 George Heim Jr.- shows tax assessment on 100 acres Served in the Revolutionary War, Captain William Weirick's Rangers of the Frontier, 1778-1783 Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church Records, Stouchsburg, Berks Co., PA lists marriage of George Heim son of George Heim to Rosina Miller daughter of John Miller, May 15, 1774, both Augusta Twp., Northumberland Co. Mary, I have the John George Himes II and Rosina Miller as the parents of Johann Wilhelm Himes b. 27-Feb-1775 d. Circa 1831. Is this the William Himes that you descend from and that married Barbara Hetrick? I have Johann Jacob Himes b. 31-Mar-1782 d. 20-Jun-1858 as a brother of Johann Wilhelm Himes. This Jacob Himes is the one that married Catherine Koehler and were the parents of Elizabeth Himes b. 16-Mar-1807 d. 16-Jan-1878, the wife of my David Swab. I am just trying to get this straight. Other than some confusion about Jacob's birth date, do I have this right? Do you know the migration path of the Himes from Northumberland Co. to Clarion Co.? This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: LANDON Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/5UC.2ACE/1250 Message Board Post: MY GREAT GRAND MOTHER ELIZABETH ELVETTA LANDON WAS BORN JAN 9,1884 IN LA PORTE PENN CLARION COUNTY I CANNOT FIND A COPY OF HER BIRTH CERTIFICATE CANE ANYONE HELP ME, I WILL PAY FOR A COPY AND MAILING CHARGES THANKS YOU DELTADAWN@inreach.com
Sorry Eric, I gave you incorrect info. I descend from William Himes and Barbara Hetrick. William son of John George Jr. and Rosina Miller, son of John George Sr. got my Williams mixed up. I note that I have Jacob Himes b.5/25/1800 son of John William Himes and Elizabeth Krebs, married to Catherine Raybuck. I have only Jacob's death date source as Russel Himes' readding of grave stone. No other info on this couple except these notes: Information posted on GenForum places this Jacob with William Himes and Anna Heterick although other sources place Jacob born in 1800 with parents William Himes and Elizabeth Krebs. Source was Martha H. Breene cemhbreene@mail.usachoice.net but e-mail bounced back. I believe she has confused the son of William and Elizabeth with Jacob son of William and Anna. Their Jacob's birth date has not been deterimed. NOTE: HERE ARE MY NOTES ON JACOB MARRIED TO CATHERINE KOHLER WHICH DO GIVE SOURCE FOR jACOB'S BIRTH DATE: Other sources have birth date at 3/31/1782. Vada McCracken of Brookville, gives date of birth as 5/14/1782 and death as 6/20/1858.Tim Conrad of Allentown, PA gives the birth date as 3/14 and the baptism as 3/21. Himmel Church Records, on line at Rootsweb, giveS birth as 3/31/1782 & baptisms as 4/14/1782 Eric Swab states Jacob was married to Catherine Raybuck, b. 9/13/1785 and d 3/13/1858 and had a daughter Elizabeth who married David Swab. There is another Jacob married to Sarah Confer who was born around 1812 and is in the 1880 census as living in Elk county and buried at Brockport. Confusion about these two is evident. (end notes) I also have your note attached to Jacob Himes b 1782 son of John George Jr. and Rosina Miller and have him married to Catherine Kohler. I'm still confused! Eric, Yes, it fits my family. I descend from William Himes son of Jacob and Catherine. I was not the source of Rayburn, only name I have is Kohler but I have in my notes that you gave her name as Rayburn. We corresponded before about this. My grandmother Alice Himes used to mention the Rayburns and that we were related to them but, of course, I wasn't too interested in any of that then. Could you share more information on David and Elizabeth's children's dates and their descendents? I have only their names and nothing further.
