Whatever, eh? I see three Fitzgerald properties on the map, all near Scotch Hill. J. has 150 acres, C., 8 acres, and John, 28 acres. No others were found. My scanner is not functioning. I will get a copy or that and one of the school group. Provide an address and I will send them to you. Sounds as though you may not have photographs of the potential Smith mothers in the school photo. If you should be able to identify any others than those I can, please let me know. WS PS I sent a reply to your other, former message with much the same info.

    3. Here's what I have on Harrigers - warts and all: Descendants of Johann Michael Harriger Generation No. 1 1. JOHANN MICHAEL1 HARRIGER was born Abt. 1675 in Bedeb-Wuerttemberg, and died 1740 in Lancaster Co, near McSherrystown. He married ANNA MARGARETHA (HARRIGER). She was born Abt. 1680. Notes for JOHANN MICHAEL HARRIGER: Arrived about 1717 with a group of Lutherans led by Minister Anthony Jacob Henckel. Johann Michael Hoerger/Harriger/Harrier, born about 1670 in Baden/ Germany and came with his wife Anna Margaretha in 1714/1717 to Philadelphia/ Montgomery Co., Pa. Son Gottlieb stayed with his father, but Andreas moved on to Lancaster/Adams Co. Johann M. is listed as the first settler of Fredericks township in Montgomery Co. In 1739 He moved to McSherrystown near his son Andreas and died in 1740. Andreas married Eva Eyler and had Andrew, Anna Margareta,Anna Maria,Catharina,Johannes,Michael,Peter, and Salome. Child of JOHANN HARRIGER and ANNA (HARRIGER) is: 2. i. GOTTLIEB2 HARRIGER, b. Abt. 1700, Germany. Generation No. 2 2. GOTTLIEB2 HARRIGER (JOHANN MICHAEL1) was born Abt. 1700 in Germany. He married CATHERINA (HARRIGER). She was born Abt. 1700. Notes for GOTTLIEB HARRIGER: Gottlieb married Catharina ? and hadAnna Barbara, John 1721 (no sons), Peter 1725-1786, and maybe a Philip. Child of GOTTLIEB HARRIGER and CATHERINA (HARRIGER) is: 3. i. PETER3 HARRIGER, b. 1725. Generation No. 3 3. PETER3 HARRIGER (GOTTLIEB2, JOHANN MICHAEL1) was born 1725. He married SUSANNA BAYER, daughter of ANDREAS BAYER. She was born Abt. 1730. Children of PETER HARRIGER and SUSANNA BAYER are: i. GEORGE4 HARRIGER, b. 1750. ii. ANDREAS HARRIGER, b. 1755. 4. iii. JOHN MICHAEL HARRIGER, b. 1765, Heidelberg Township, Northampton Co, PA; d. 1834, Monroe Township, Armstrong Co. Generation No. 4 4. JOHN MICHAEL4 HARRIGER (PETER3, GOTTLIEB2, JOHANN MICHAEL1) was born 1765 in Heidelberg Township, Northampton Co, PA, and died 1834 in Monroe Township, Armstrong Co. He married ANNA ELIZABETH SMATHERS Abt. 1791, daughter of GEORGE SMETHERS and ROSANNA KLINETAUB. She was born 1772 in Northampton Co, and died Aft. 1840 in Monroe Twp, Armstrong Co. Notes for JOHN MICHAEL HARRIGER: Lived in Luzerne County in 1771. 1790 Census, Luzerne Co Michael Harriger 1 male 2 females Resettled in Red Bank in 1811, listed as one of several early settlers on Leatherwood Creek Harrigers apparently form a long line of gunsmiths, continuing to present day. Descendant Russell Harriger wrote an excellent book (I'm told) called "Longrifles of Pennsylvania," which contains a lot of information about our pioneer Pennsylvania ancestors. He lives in Brookville, PA, with wife Jean Harriger. Jean is an expert genealogist who is supposed to have a lot of information about this line, but she has no email connection. Their daughter Katy Harriger is an esteemed professor of Political Science at Wake Forest. There lie buried in the Churchville cemetery Michael Harriger, the grandfather of Henry Harriger, and by his side his wife, who was Elizabeth Smathers, both natives of Luzerne county, Penn., where they lived as early as 1771. Michael Harriger, a son of this pioneer couple, and the father of Henry Harriger, was born in Luzerne county, June 19, 1806, and in 1811 came with his parents to what is now Clarion county, where they located on a farm in Monroe township, upon which their grandson (under consideration) now resides. ELIZABETH5 HARRIGER (JOHN MICHAEL4, PETER3, GOTTLIEB2, JOHANN MICHAEL1) was born Abt. 1794 in Nescopeck, Luzerne Co, and died Aft. 1860 in Porter Township, Clarion Co. She married NICHOLAS BALLIET/POLLIARD Aft. 1810, son of JOHANNES BALLIET and MARIA SCHNEIDER. He was born February 08, 1774 in Egypt, Whitehall Twp, Northampton or Luzerne Co, PA, and died December 13, 1851 in Curlsville, PA. Notes for ELIZABETH HARRIGER: The census records show her born between 1790 and 1800, so the consensus that she was born in 1794 is probably accurate. However, she was much too young to have born the older children in this family, so I suspect she was a second wife. Note that Nicholas' wife in 1810 is the same age or older than him, but in 1820 she is younger than him. Thus, I suspect he did not marry Elizabeth until after 1810. 1860 Census, Monroe Twp, Clarion County Relatively near Reuben Shirey - son of Mary Balliet/Polliard Elizabeth, 66 Rachel, 28 Catharine, 26 Angeline, 24 Mary, 8 Oliver, 7 Edward, 3 Notes for NICHOLAS BALLIET/POLLIARD: Daughter Rachel's death certificate indicates he was born in Luzerne County. RACHEL6 POLLIARD, b. 1831; d. 1914. Notes for RACHEL POLLIARD: According to Rachel's death certificate, her parents were Nicholas Polliard, born in Luzerne County, and Elizabeth Harriger, b. in PA. "She had three children by three different men, none of whom she was married to. My ggggrandmother, Mary Ann Fulton, was the oldest; her father was George Washington Fulton, son of a prominent iron manufacturer in Clarion County. The second child was Agnes Harriger. I am trying to find out who her father was. The third child was James Alvin London, probably son of Samuel London. Daughter Mary Ann married Truman B. London, Jr., son of prominent Lumberman in Jefferson County. Both Washington Fulton and Samuel London later married and had other families; I don't know how involved they were in the lives of these illegitimate children. According to family stories and the records I have been able to find, Rachel bounced from one family member to another. She did "housekeeping" to earn her keep, and moved her children around with her until they struck out on their own. Each child retained the surname of their respective fathers." SUSANNAH5 HARRIGER (JOHN MICHAEL4, PETER3, GOTTLIEB2, JOHANN MICHAEL1) was born Abt. 1798 in Luzerne Co, and died Abt. 1857. She married CHRISTIAN SMATHERS, JR., son of CHRISTIAN SMATHERS and ELIZABETH DAUBENSPECK. He was born 1794 in Luzerne Co, and died March 01, 1865 in Oliver Township, Jefferson Co, near Cool Spring. Notes for CHRISTIAN SMATHERS, JR.: Christian and Susan (Harriger) Smathers, who came from east of the mountains, and located in Clarion county at an early day. There they successfully engaged in farming, and reared their family of eight children, namely: Sarah, who married Henry Milliron, but both are now deceased; Eliza, wife of John Nigh; Margaret, wife of John Jones; John, of this sketch; Susannah and Rosanna (twins), the former the wife of William Shingledecker; Jacob, a farmer of Clarion county; A. J. Smathers, of Stanton, Penn., deceased; and William Smathers, deceased, of Clarion county, Pennsylvania. Peter Henry, Copyright, 1898 Christian Smithers Sr. his wife Elizabeth, with their three Children, George, Christian, and Elizabeth moved in 1797 southeast forty or fifty miles to McElevy's fort on the western Turnpike, yet in Allegheny County. Christian Smithers died here in 1834. His wife died about 1842, was buried in Churchville Cemetery, two and a half miles south of their homestead, where they cleared it from the forest, erected buildings, and made the land tillable and the homestead prosperous and inviting. It is the truth that they settled first in Allegheny County in 1795; in 1797 they again settled in the same county. Geographical lines have changed the county three different times. It was here Christian took up 600 acres of land in the forest. Here their fourth child, Jacob was born in 1800, died in 1881. John, the fifth child was born Feb. 11, 1803: William, sixth child, was born June 5, 1807; David, seventh child was born 1810; Henry, eighth child was born 1813. Philip, born Nov. 1816, was the baby of this family. -- The History of the Smathers Family in America, by Dr. Wilson Jones Smathers 2 Elizabeth Smathers b: August 09, 1826 in PA d: July 18, 1880 2 Jacob Smathers 2 Margaret Smathers 2 Rosanna Smathers ............. +William Shingledecker 2 Sarah Smathers 2 William Smathers 2 John Smathers b: January 04, 1828 in Clarion, PA d: August 25, 1895 ............. +Anna Jones b: March 09, 1829 in Beaver Twp, Jefferson, PA m: January 30, 1850 in Jefferson, PA d: May 10, 1915 .................... 3 Wilson Jones Smathers b: March 28, 1851 in Greenville, Clarion, PA ........................ +Margarette Caroline Sims Fulton b: February 16, 1851 in Indiana, PA m: July 22, 1875 in Smicksburg, Indiana, PA ............................... 4 Margarette Smathers ............................... 4 John Marion Simms Smathers ............................... 4 Bessie Fulton Smathers ............................... 4 Dorothy Ruth Smathers ............................... 4 Francis C. ANNA JONES; b. 1829, Beaver TWP, Jefferson Co. Notes for JOHN SMATHERS: Although John Smathers started out in life for himself in limited circumstances, by industry, economy and good business ability he became one of the most extensive farmers and stock dealers of Jefferson county, where he located in 1853. For a few years he resided in Oliver township, and then removed to the farm in Ringgold township, where his widow and son, Charles, are still living. He gave each of his children a large and valuable farm, or its equivalent, all of which property he had acquired through his own unaided efforts and good management. Enterprising and progressive, he was numbered among the valued citizens of the community, was a firm supporter of the Democratic party, and an active and consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. On January 30, 1850, he was married to Miss Anna Jones, and they became the parents of seven children, namely: Wilson J., born March 28, 1851, married Maggie Fulton, and is now a leading physician of Du Bois, Penn.; M. Fillmore, born September 8, 1853, married Maggie Wilson, an ex-school teacher, and is engaged in farming and stock raising in Ringgold township; Emily A., born May 25, 1860, died at the age of two years and nine months; Winfield S., born April 1, 1858, married Amanda Yaney, and is engaged in merchandising in Worthville, Jefferson county; J. Curtis, born June 23, 1863, married Mattie Campbell, and follows farming in Indiana county, Penn.; Charles, born September 10, 1866, wedded Mary Buck, and operates the old homestead farm; and Anna A., born March 7, 1870, died April 16, 1870. The family is one of prominence, its members holding high positions in social and business circles. -- Peter Henry, Copyright 1898, Commemorative Biographical Records of Central Pennsylvania. Notes for ANNA JONES: Mrs. Smathers, a most estimable lady, was born in Beaver township, Jefferson county, March 9, 1829, and is a daughter of John and Lydia (Grinder) Jones, of Huntington county, Penn., who at an early day came to Beaver township, Jefferson county, where the father followed agricultural pursuits. He was a son of Thomas Jones, a native of Ireland, who emigrated to the New World in early life, first locating in Maryland, whence he removed to Westmoreland county, Penn., and later to Beaver township, Jefferson county, where he was numbered among the early settlers. To John and Lydia (Grinder) Jones were born the following children: Doris, deceased wife of James Guthrie, a carpenter of Summerville, Penn.; Louisa, widow of Charles Jaycox, of the same place; Richard, deceased; John, a farmer of Beaver township; Anna, widow of our subject; Emily, widow of Abraham Flemming, of Shannondale, Penn.; Elizabeth, wife of Joseph Hand, an agriculturist of Nebraska; David, who was killed in the army; Thomas, who is conducting a boarding house in Seigle, Penn.; Reilly, who also laid down his life on the altar of his country during the Civil war; and Elias, a prominent farmer of Beaver township. The parents of these children have also passed away, the father dying in 1861, aged sixty-three years, the mother in 1892, aged eighty-seven, and both were interred in the Beaver township cemetery. They were faithful members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and in politics Mr. Jones was an ardent Republican. -- Peter Henry, 1898 iv. Notes for HENRY HARRIGER: Henry Harriger was born January 17, 1837, on the homestead where he has practically resided for sixty years. At the age of twenty-two years he went to work on a farm for John Trainor, remaining four years. In 1862, when our Union was threatened and Civil war was upon us, fired with patriotism and love of country, young Harriger enlisted in Company H, 155th P.V.I. He was with the Army of the Potomac, and shared the fate of his command from Antietam to Appomattox, participating in the numerous skirmishes and battles in which his company was engaged. Among them were Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Hatcher's Run, and the Wilderness. During the battle of Gettysburg he was confined in the hospital at Fairfax, Va., where he was ill for six weeks. He received an honorable discharge from the service in June 1865, then returned to the home farm of his parents, and in the fall following resumed agricultural pursuits. Following farming through a long life, Mr. Harriger is not without that ripe experience and knowledge of that avocation that one acquires in years of practical work. He has a beautiful farm of 200 acres, on which he is building a new two-story frame house, which will make himself and wife a cozy home where they may pass the evening of life with the comforts their industry and frugality have won for them. They are upright Christian people, members of the Presbyterian Church, and enjoy the respect of the entire community. Patrick J. Yes, I was disappointed that we were not connected, but there are alot of Smiths. The 1880 map you mentioned. Is that something on line that I can look at?? Is it something that can be scanned. There should be Fitzgeralds somewhere there. Dr. Fitzgerald practiced in that area. J.Heck Smith is part of my Smith family. Thanks, Ethel in Oregon

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/5UC.2ACE/556.557.1.2 Message Board Post: Dear Ethyl, This is my third try at a message to you tonight. Dumb mistakes!! Hope the last message was not too discouraging. I found on the Farmington Twp. map of about 1880 three Smiths that may be those you mentioned. P. and J.H. had adjoining 200 and 85 acre properties which were closer to the Lewis School than any other shown. J. Smith had 56 acres a short distance southwest of Scotch Hill with a school in the village. My grandfather got a temporary teaching certificate in 1898 at age 18. He taught at the Lewis School not far from his home. Your Smith family children may be in the photo, but I only have identification for the Smiths in my family. The photo shows the mothers standing behind their kids which may allow identification by you. Some ladies are dressed in their finery for cool, perhaps wet, weather. If you return to your message board and read this, know that copies of the school group and the map can be sent to you for your examination. Good luck in your searches. WS

    3. Bob: No, just go back to William Ace born about 1795? just have him alive in 1830 but no dates of birth and death. Listed the three daughters, I have a problem with Sarah Ann Ace born 1832 when married 1858 to Robert Hayes Downing, 8 5 1828/ 2 24 1898, buried Foxburg Cemetery, served in Civil War, and what do you have as the date of his birth and death? What are the dates of their children? I only have Sarah Ann Downing 1867/ 1958 buried Parker Presbyterian Cemetery, Armstrong County, Pa. I have a friend in Parker who recently walked the entire cemetery and updated the stones and listing. If Sarah Ann Ace born 1832, she is too old to have a son, Lines Johnson Downing 8 8 1883/ 1 14 1919 married 11 8 1903 to Margaret MaLinda McCoy. Do you have a correction on this son? The other children we have listed as: Margaret, Mary, Sarah Ann, William, Isabella, Saul, Emma Louise, Robert Hayes Downing, Alexander Jenkins Downing, Lines Johnson Downing. What dates of birth and death do you have for these children? What are the dates for your grandmother, Ida Williams? I did not have her name before. Pearl DowningQ@aol.com wrote: Yes Sarah Ann Ace was my Great Grandmother, I am really Robert Hayes Downing IV since my grand father was Robert Hayes Downing (1873-1972) and my father Robert Hayes Downing (1904-1980) Me Robert Hayes Downing (1938-?) I do not have much on the Ace side. I also am looking for some link to my Grandmothers family she was Ida Williams of Armstrong County (Hovey Township) almost Foxburg, Clarion County.
