He was warranted a large tract of land by the Commonwealth of Penn. It began at Little Piney Creek and extended westward, including such lands as later became the property of Ogden Heirs, Uriah George, Harrison George, Samuel George, and others. This tract was covered with virgin timber. The pine was sawed into lumber and sold at Elk City during the oil boom there, and the hardwood was made into charcoal and used in the Limestone iron furnace

Janiel Kapp, Shippenville, formerly of Lamartine Ralph LeRoy Say, Clarion William Edmund Breene William Edmund Breene, for many years president judge of the Court of Common Pleas of Venango County, died on his 88th birthday Wednesday, March 16, 2005, in UPMC Northwest, Seneca. Judge Breene was born March 16, 1917, in Oil City, the son of William Edmund Breene and Grace Inez Pitts Breene. His father's family had owned and managed the Stoneboro and Chautauqua Lake Ice Co., which later became the Venango Ice and Coal Co. on Main Street, Oil City. After the death of his father in 1921, he was raised by his widowed mother. He was a 1935 graduate of Oil City High School, a 1939 graduate of Dickinson College and a 1942 graduate of Dickinson School of Law. During World War II he was a special agent with the FBI, stationed in the New York City Field Office. In 1945, he began the practice of law in Venango County, first with the late Robert M. Dale in Franklin and then in Oil City, where he also was general counsel to the National Transit Co. From 1950 to 1956, he served on the Oil City School Board. He was a member of city council in Oil City from 1956 to 1961. In November 1961, he was elected judge of the Court of Common Pleas of Venango County, the 28th Judicial District of Pennsylvania, and was sworn in as president judge Jan. 1, 1962. In 1971 and again in 1981 he was retained in office. For 25 years, until his mandatory retirement in 1987 at age 70, he remained president judge of this court. He then was commissioned as a senior judge, serving in that capacity for 15 further years until the end of 2002. Judge Breene was a member of the American Bar Association, the Pennsylvania Bar Association and the Venango County Bar Association. Active in the community, Judge Breene was a trustee of the Samuel Justus Charitable Trust and the Dr. and Mrs. Arthur William Phillips Charitable Trust. He had been a board member of the Salvation Army and the Oil City Public Library and had been president of the Kiwanis Club. He was the recipient of the Oil City Exchange Club's Golden Deeds Award and the Boy Scouts of America Silver Beaver Award. Judge Breene was a member of Christ Episcopal Church where he had been a lay leader, a member of vestry, senior warden and chancellor of the Episcopal Diocese of Erie. He was active in several Masonic organizations and felt greatly honored to have been named a 33rd Degree Mason, Freemasonry's highest award. On Sept. 6, 1941, he was married to the former Mary Louise Kirkpatrick, who survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Barbara Breene Hoelscher and her husband, Dr. Wolfgang Hoelscher of Gauting, Germany, Roberta A. Breene of Stuart, Fla., and Christine L. Breene of Mill Creek; five grandchildren, Dr. Theodore G. Williams III and his wife, Athena Scotes, of Athens, Greece, Lydia Williams and her husband, Scott Thomas, of Stuart, Fla., Susanna Hoelscher and Caroline Hoelscher, both of Gauting, Germany, and Alice Rose Breene of Mill Creek; two great-grandchildren, Sophia and Andrew Williams of Athens; and a nephew, John E. Breene of Herndon, Va. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Louise Breene Mountain, and a brother, John Earl Breene. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 23, in Christ Episcopal Church, 16 Central Ave., Oil City. The family will receive friends in the parish hall of the church following the services. Private interment will be in Grove Hill Cemetery. The Morrison Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to a charity of one's choice. June Baker Donaldson June Baker Donaldson, 85, formerly of Franklin, a 1937 graduate of Rocky Grove High School, with several relatives in the Franklin area, died Tuesday, March 15, 2005, in San Angelo, Texas. William Roy Grove William Roy Grove, 86, of Allegheny Township, Parker, died at 9:15 a.m. Thursday, March 17, 2005, in Butler Memorial Hospital after an illness. Born Aug. 25, 1918, in Foxburg, he was the son of Wesley and Kathryn Irene Whitling Grove. Mr. Grove was a veteran of World War II and was honorably discharged from the United States Army Air Force as a private first class. He entered the military Nov. 24, 1942, and was discharged Feb. 10, 1946. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the American Theater Service Medal, the European-American Theater Medal and the Victory Medal. Mr. Grove was a sawyer in saw mills in western Pennsylvania for many years. He then was employed by Sunbeam Coal Co. He then became employed as a custodian at Allegheny-Clarion Valley School in Foxburg, retiring there. He was an active member of the Parker Senior Citizens Center for many years and was a member of the ECHO Club in Eau Claire. Mr. Grove was Protestant by faith. Surviving are a brother, Carnie W. Grove of Eau Claire; a sister, Pearl Altman of Spring Church near Elderton; two nephews; one niece; great-nieces and great-nephews. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday in the H. Jack Buzard Funeral Home, Wayne Street, Parker. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home. Interment will be in Old Zion Cemetery near Emlenton. Roberta Rose Hays Roberta Rose Hays, 41, of 6189 Sandy Lake-Polk Road, Polk, died at 4 a.m. Thursday, March 17, 2005, at her home after an extended illness. Born Oct. 30, 1963, in Wytheville, Va., she was the daughter of James W. and Ella Mandy Chrisley Ring. Mrs. Hays was an independent distributor for McKee Foods (Little Debbie). She was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Sandy Lake, Mrs. Hays enjoyed spending time with her family. She was married Oct. 30, 1995, to David C. Hays, who survives. Also surviving are three sisters, Wilma Cline and Freda Leagens, both of Virginia, and Betty Castle of Polk; and one brother, James D. Ring of Meadville. Mrs. Hays was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Brenda Campbell; and one brother, Charles Ring. Edward Hemmes Edward Hemmes of Oakmont, a former resident of Oil City and Butler, died Sunday, March 13, 2005, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, following a three-week illness. Born March 30, 1926, in Clearfield, he was the son of Mabel and Edward Fern and was raised by Elsie and Fritz Hemmes. Mr. Hemmes, a veteran of World War II, was employed in a variety of positions throughout his long working career. Janiel Kapp, 92, of Beverly Healthcare-Shippenville, formerly of Lamartine, died at 11 p.m. Wednesday, March 16, 2005, in the Beverly facility. Born Aug. 25, 1912, near Knox, she was the daughter of Joseph and Laura Brothers Sheffer. She was a graduate of Salem High School where she was a star basketball player. She also attended Oil City Business School. Mrs. Kapp was a switchboard operator in Lamartine. After her marriage, she and her husband owned and operated Kapp's Mobil Station prior to their retirement in 1974. She was a member of the Salem Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school for many years, sang in the choir and worked with the youth group. Mrs. Kapp had been chaplain of the American Legion Auxiliary in Lamartine. She enjoyed cooking, baking, playing the piano and spending time with her family. Mrs. Kapp was married Aug. 24, 1934, to Harold A. Kapp, who died Dec. 27, 2004. They had celebrated their 70th anniversary last August. Surviving are a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Kapp was the last surviving member of her immediate family. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Sarah Sheffer Benner; and three brothers, Paul Sheffer, Everett Sheffer and Robert Sheffer. The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the David C. McEntire Funeral Home, 504 E. Penn St., Knox. Born Nov. 8, 1948, in Grove City, he was the son of Herbert and Vivian Coast Say. Mr. Say loved the outdoors, traveling, hunting, fishing and airplanes. Surviving are his mother, Vivian Say of Emlenton; a brother, Gary Say of Emlenton; and four sisters, Carol Jenkins of Knox, Pat Miller of Titusville, Judy Hartzell and husband, Hartford, of Knox and Janet Dittman and husband, Wayne, of Oil City; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Say was preceded in death by his father, March 9, 1977; his maternal grandparents, Floyd and Ida Coast; and his paternal grandparents, Daniel Lee and Mae Say. I believe he came to the Fryburg, PA area (Friedensburg) as a young man and there married Maria Dalritsch who was born in Friedensburg. He died February 23, 1829. I am also interested in his son John Washington Heffner, Sr. born May 6, 1813. He died December 22, 1887. His wife's name was Mary Catherine Schwartz. Many records have these persons in Schuylkill County PA. or Berks County PA but I think they were here in Clarion County. Anyone know anything?

Benedictine Sister Mary David Callahan Benedictine Sister Mary David Callahan, a former Oil City resident, died Tuesday, March 15, 2005, in Mount Saint Benedict Monastery, Erie, after a long illness. She was born in Oil City, a daughter of the late Leo David and Anna Short Callahan and received her early education in St. Joseph Parish schools, Oil City. Sister Mary David graduated in1941 from St. Benedict Academy, Erie, and entered the Benedictine Sisters of Erie in August of the same year. She made her final profession as a Benedictine Sister Aug. 21, 1945, and had celebrated her silver and golden anniversaries of profession. She was an accomplished pianist, organist and composer who began her ministry in music at age five with piano lessons. At age 12, she was playing the church organ as well as the piano. Her formal education in music included a bachelor's degree in music with concentration in composition, theory and piano awarded by the Eastman School of Music, Rochester, N.Y., and a master's degree in liturgy and liturgical music from Notre Dame University, South Bend, Ind. Sister Mary David taught piano and choral music in several parish schools including Immaculate Conception, Clarion; St. Stephen, Oil City; Venango Christian High School, Oil City; and St. Benedict Academy, Erie. She served as organist at St. Julia Parish, Erie, and St. Titus Parish, Titusville. The compositions that were her primary focus since the 1950s are well-known and widely published. While most of her work is related to liturgy and ranges from psalm tones to hymns to masses, she composed orchestral and instrumental works, including a symphony. Sister Mary David served her Benedictine community as novice director and as liturgical musician at Mount Saint Benedict Monastery. As novice director, she trained dozens of young sisters in the Rule of St. Benedict. As a musician, her compositions and interpretations of her own and other music graced and energized monastic liturgies daily for many years. Surviving are her religious community, the Benedictine Sisters of Erie; her brother, David L. Callahan of Oil City; and her nephew, Dr. Paul LaFemina of Las Vegas, Nev. Sister Mary David was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Dorothy. Visiting hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday at Mount Saint Benedict Monastery. Clarence Loren Conner Clarence Loren Conner, 74, of East Brady, formerly of Parker, died of natural causes at 12:35 p.m. Tuesday, March 15, 2005, at his residence. Born Dec. 24, 1930, in Bluegoose, near Parker, he was the son of Harry and Elizabeth Hook Conner. Mr. Conner retired in 1982 after 30 years of service with Asplundh Tree Co. He was a member of the Regular Baptist Church in East Brady. For more than 30 years, Mr. Conner was a social member of VFW Post 7073 in Parker. Throughout his entire lifetime, Mr. Conner enjoyed working on automobiles and was well-known as one of the finest mechanics in the area. In his earlier years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing and gardening with both vegetables and flowers. Mr. Conner loved spending time with his family and had a great love for his dogs, Pierre and Cokie. He first was married to Mable Kathleen Smith, who died July 22, 1981. He later married Shelda Hilliard Ashbaugh, who died March 3, 2000. Surviving are five sons, Loren Dean "Butch" Conner of Mineral Ridge, Ohio, the Rev. Born April 23, 1951, in Brookville, he was the son of Dennis F. Glosser, who died Feb. 18, 2005, and Olive C. Smith Glosser, who died Oct. 26, 1988. Mr. Glosser was a 1970 graduate of Clarion High School. and was a 1988 graduate of Missouri Western State College where he received a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Mr. Glosser was employed by various trucking companies as a truck driver and retired in 1984 due to health reasons. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Clarion. Mr. Glosser was an elected constable for Paint Township. He enjoyed country music, crossword puzzles, spending time with his family especially his grandson, and long weekend get-aways. Mr. Glosser was married Aug. 1, 1986, to Kathy Best, who survives. Also surviving are two brothers, Dan Glosser and wife, Sue, of Allison Park and Jeff Glosser and companion, Jennifer Hetrick, of Shippenville; one stepson, Michael Cotherman and his companion, Katie Beck, of Shippenville; and one grandson, William Cotherman of Shippenville. Dorothy L. Lesh Dorothy L. Lesh, 89, of Winston-Salem, N.C., died Tuesday, March 15, 2005, at Arbor Acres United Methodist Retirement Community. Born July 14, 1915, in Oil City, she was the daughter of Roy V. and Edith B. Lesh. She graduated from Oil City High School and graduated with honors in 1940 from Pennsylvania State University with a bachelor of science degree in home economics. She received a master of science degree in library science in 1956 from Columbia University. Miss Lesh became a literature scientist in 1950, specializing in research on organic nitrogen compounds. She was a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Association of University Women and the Special Libraries Association. Miss Lesh was a lifelong Methodist and was a member of Stokesdale United Methodist Church in Stokesdale, N.C. She enjoyed extensive travel throughout the world with her cousin, Edith Mohnkern Fox, and was an amateur photographer and hiker. Surviving are her special friend and caregiver, Texie Wilson of Stokesdale, N.C.; her cousins, Joyce and Darrell Gibbs of Titusville, George and Carol Fox of Titusville, Beth Bowser of Oil City, Doug and Vicky Fox of Cranberry, Dee and Dave Busch of Lewisville, Texas, Clayton and Sue Fox of Oil City, Bill and Vicky Fox of Marshall, N.C., Al Mohnkern of Pennsylvania, Ray Lesh and wife Polly, of Independence, Mo.; and numerous other cousins throughout the United States. Mrs. Niederriter moved from Oil City to Warren six years ago to be near her daughter. Born Feb. 17, 1937, in Oil City, she was the daughter of James H. and Catherine Lonergan Carey. She attended St. Joseph Grade School and was a 1956 graduate of St. Joseph High School. Mrs. Niederriter was a homemaker and enjoyed baking, cooking, crossword puzzles, soap operas and being around her family and grandchildren. She was married May 4,1957, in St. Joseph Church, Oil City, to James F. Niederriter, who died Feb. 22, 1994. Surviving are four children, J. Steven Niederriter and wife, Janet, stationed with the U.S. Army in Belgium, Daniel P. Niederriter of Oil City, Diane M. Niederriter of Halifax and Debra A. Niederriter of Warren; and three grandchildren, Sara, Joshua and Kristen Niederriter. She also is survived by two sisters, Joanne Meagher and husband, Paul, and Barb Hall, all of Oil City; and one brother, Robert Carey of Wilmington, Del.; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Niederriter was preceded in death by three brothers, James Carey, Richard Carey and Jack Carey; and one sister, Patricia McClellan. Mr. Stormer was a member of the VFW and many local organizations. "Jack" Tarr, 68, of 31 Fairview Ave., Oil City, died at 9:15 a.m. Monday, March 14, 2005, in the Oil City Presbyterian Home after a short illness. Born June 15, 1936, in Meadville, he was the son of John D. Tarr Sr. and Genevieve Fink Tarr. At a young age, his family moved to Oil City. He attended St. Joseph Grade School and was a 1954 graduate of St. Joseph High School. Mr. Tarr started to work at age 19 with the United Natural Gas Co. He retired from National Fuel Gas as director of labor relations in 1992 at age 55. Following his retirement, he developed a passion for working with wood and created beautiful pieces of furniture. Mr. Tarr was a member of St. Joseph Church. As an amateur scuba diver, he had been called upon from time to time in his earlier years to do underwater repair work. He had a pilot's license and enjoyed bowling and golfing. Mr. Tarr was married June 10, 1956, in St. Joseph Church by the Rev. James Webber to his high school sweetheart, Marjorie "Marge" Swasta, who survives. Also surviving are special friends, Howard and Patty Faunce and Michelle Rankin, all of Oil City, and Lou and Mary Cecchinato of Sheffield, Mass. Clatus Wessell Clatus Wessell, 91, of 1339 Wallaceville Road, Dempseytown, died at 5:15 p.m. Saturday, March 12, 2005, at his residence. Born Nov. 7, 1913, in Oil City, he was the son of Albert A. and Clara Neubauer Wessell. Mr. Wessell retired from Oil Well Supply in Oil City after 40 years of service. He was a longtime member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church of Franklin. Later in life when unable to drive, he attended services at the Wallaceville United Methodist Church and helped in the construction of that church.. Mr. Wessell enjoyed hunting and farming. He was married May 1, 1937, to Ruth Wyher, who preceded him in death. Surviving are a son, Alan Wessell and wife, Gloria Jean, of Wallaceville; two grandchildren, Darren Wessell and wife, Amie, of Cooperstown and Sheila Allen and husband, Ron, of Titusville; and three great-grandchildren, Wesley and Courtney Allen of Titusville and Mariah Wessell of Cooperstown. He also is survived by two brothers, Gerald Wessell and wife, Lois, of Seneca and Jim Wessell and wife, Marge, of Cranberry; and two sisters, Mable Runninger of Oil City and Pat Toscano of Franklin. Berlin, 80, of 910 Main St., Knox, died at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 10, 2005, at his residence following a short illness. Born Jan. 27, 1925, in Beaver Township, Clarion County, he was a son of the late Frederick and Bertha McDonald Berlin. Mr. Berlin was a World War II veteran, serving with the U. S. Army Construction Battalion in the Pacific Theater of Operation. He worked for Knox Glass in various capacities for 35 years, retiring in 1985. He also owned Berlin Busing and was a school bus contractor for Keystone School District. Mr. Berlin was very involved in the Knox community. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and attended services there for 77 years. He served on the church council for 15 years and the building and grounds committee for 20 years, and he was involved with the progressive group. He and his family cleaned the church for many years. Mr. Berlin also donated his time and his buses for church and Sunday School activities. He also volunteered for numerous Boy and Girl Scout group activities such as camping at Camp Coffman and the Boy Scout Jamboree. He helped as a cook for the 100th anniversary of Drake Well. Mr. Berlin was also a 34-year member of the Knox Volunteer Fire Company, where he was active in the fire police and worked in the kitchen. In 2002, he was awarded an honorary membership and had been named "fireman of the year" at one time. Mr. Berlin was a member of Edenburg Lodge 550 of the F&AM, the Venango Lodge of Perfection in Oil City and the New Castle Consistory. He belonged to the Clarion County Zem Zems and the Clarion County Shrine Club. He also was a member of the Knox Lions Club for more than 30 years, and he participated in youth field days at Camp Coffman, Horsethief Days, bike races, highway cleanup, Salvation Army fund drive and the Relay for Life annual campaign. He was married March 1, 1943, to Martha Klingler, and she survives. The Berlins celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary this year. In addition to his wife, Mr. Berlin is survived by a daughter, Carol Meier of Knox; three sons, Paul Edward "Stoner" Berlin and his wife, Joan, of New Port Richey, Fla., Lee Berlin and his wife, Peggy, of Knox, and Brian Berlin and his wife, Teresa, of Acme; nine grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Walter Berlin of Erie. Born Aug. 8, 1922, in Clarion County, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Margaret Norris Snyder. Mrs. Centorcelli was a 1941 graduate of Rimersburg High School. She retired in 1990 after 21 years as a cafeteria worker in Union School District, Rimersburg. Mrs. Centorcelli was a member of Jerusalem United Church of Christ and the Golden Rule Class, where she served as treasurer for a number of years. She enjoyed her family, flowers and birds and studying the Bible. She had resided at the Clarview Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center, Sligo, since June 2004. Mrs. Centorcelli was married Nov. 5, 1951, in Rimersburg, to Leroy William Centorcelli, who preceded her in death Nov. 6, 1993. She is survived by a daughter, Margaret R. Born April 8, 1939, in Warren, he was the son of the late Heath and Anna Fladry Ferrie Sr. Mr. Ferrie was formerly employed with Warren County School District in the building and grounds department, retiring in August 2001. He was a former employee of Valentines Disposal and was an officer in the Elk Township Police Department. He had owned and operated Ferrie Land Market since 1953. Mr. Ferrie attended the First Church of God. He was known as the "pumpkin king of Warren County." He was married July 16, 1994, in Diamond United Methodist Church to the former Jodi Lynn Cresswell, who survives. Mr. Ferrie is also survived by two daughters, Sherry Moore of Scandia and Courtney Ferrie of Clarendon; a son, Raymond Ferrie of Hearts Content; two brothers, Heath Ferrie of Russell and Pat Ferrie of Scandia; a sister, Anna Mae Rowley of Lakeland, Fla.; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Ray and Ella Brown Gourley. Mr. Gourley worked as a truck driver and at Ron Seidle Chevrolet in the parts department. He also drove the wrecker for Seidle. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Clarion, and he was a past member of the Murphy Grange and Odd Fellows Lodge. Mr. Gourley was married Oct. 21, 1939, to Lulu Belle Elder, and she survives. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in October. Paden, 59, of Homer, N.Y. and New Smyrna Beach, Fla., died Monday, March 7, 2005, at his Florida home. Born March 21, 1945, in Franklin, he was the son of the late Glen and Pauline Fellner Paden. Mr. Paden was a 1963 graduate of Franklin High School. He received his bachelor's degree from Penn State and his master's from Pace. He retired from IBM in Endicott, N.Y, where he was a systems analyst. Mr. Paden was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served during the Vietnam War. He was an award-winning vintner in the Southern Tier Brew Club and an enthusiastic golfer in the Cortland Country Club twelvesome. He was a charter member of the revived South Skaneateles Singing and Sailing Society. Mr. Paden will be remembered for perfecting the art of serious porch sitting. He was also serious about fishing and gourmet cooking. He was married April 25, 1970, in Hawaii, to the former Carol Sessums, and she survives. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a brother, Glen Paden Jr. of Winsted, Conn.; and two sisters, Florence Schaub of Christmas, Fla., and Mary Usoff of Polk.
