The Clarion County Obituary books (1895-1920) are for sale, as well as many other goodies. I try to get there at least once a year. Did you know you get a discount on books if you are a member of the Historical Society? We have a farm in Fisher, and go out to eat regularly. One of my favorites is Vince's Tavern on Rt 322 in Shippenville. My Dad really enjoys the Vowinkel Hotel in Vowinkel on Rt 66. Two wonderful restaurants are The Foxburg Inn in Foxburg (http://www.foxburggroup.com) and the Westline Inn (this one is way up by Kinzu in the Allegheny Mountains [http://www.westlineinn.com/], but it is well worth the drive). We have also heard the Clarion River Lodge (http://www.clarionriverlodge.com/) in Cook Forest is quite good, but we have yet to go there. Since we usually stay for a few days, we stop at the super Walmart just off the 80 exit and get sandwich meet and sliced cheese. They have a good deli there. Newspepers can be purchased at The Book Nook (a bookstore) downtown. It's better than getting a paper (and possibly loosing money) in one of those paper things outside the courthouse or outside Walmart. Aslo, if you are like me and can't live without Diet Pepsi, you can buy it at the sub shop across from the courthouse or from the machine in the courthouse basement. A snack machine is also there. Good for you, Bill! Have fun. Not sure if I told you this... In May 2002 I posted a query on the Clarion list regarding your father Samuel and his family. I got a reply and this is in my FTM notes: 5/21/2003: Submitted query to the Clarion Co., PA, list regarding Samuel and his family. Received this info from Jeanne Rugh of Coos Bay, OR jrugh@hotmail.com: "husband grew up in New Bethlehem and knew the Reitz boys. In addition to the ones you have listed there was a Richard and a Glenn. Richard graduated from New Bethlehem High in 1947. Glenn worked in our grocery store when he was in high school. I am not sure when he graduated, but his picture was in the Leader-Vindicator recently, the weekly New Bethlehem newspaper. He may have been because he worked at the newsstand as a kid delivering papers. Charles became an undertaker like his dad (Note: meaning Samuel). He had his business in New Bethlehem on Penn S. He died of a heart attack. Walter went on to become a Methodist Missionary in Central America." Jeanne Rugh and I corresponded for awhile. In fact, Art and I drove up the coast of Oregon and almost stopped to visit her, but we were very tired and left Coos Bay after having a snack there and pushed on. She was disappointed that we didn't. She's a very kind lady and you might want to get in touch with her. She would probably love reminiscing with you. Hi! Does anyone have the Clarion County Obituary Books (1895-1920) that would do a look-up for me? I'm looking for Frank G. REITZ who died between 1912 and 1920. His birth name is Franklin Godfrey REITZ. He could also be listed as G. Franklin. He is my 2nd great granduncle and I have been looking for him for a very long time. Darla, et al, The REITZ obits that I should be receiving are the obits of Frank's grandchildren, not children. Their father is Samuel Franklin REITZ; mother Lydia Marie HETRICK. Sorry about that. Hi Darla (my friend)! I'm wanting the obits for Frank REITZ (b. 1862); died between 1912 and 1920 and his wife Catherine McSPARRIN, died after 1930. Actually, we do have someone that is looking for a bunch of us who are REITZ researchers. I just got a message that some of their children's obits have been found. They will be mailed to a cousin who will be out of town when the arrive, so I'll have them eventually. They are for Walter K. REITZ, Archie REITZ, Harry REITZ, and Bernice Cello REITZ. If anyone is interested or has anything to add, let me know. Hi Again My recollection is that there are some obits at the Historical Society. I also recall tombstone readings....some done a long time ago and some conflict among versions in some case. Best write to them and ask specifically what they have. I don't live nearby but go from time to time when in western PA. It has been some time and my memory about various repositories isn't "total recall" Virginia
I visited the Clarion County Historical Society in September of 2004 and found the people there very helpful. 2 publications that they produced for us were: Obituaries From the Clarion Democrat 1911 and 1912, compiled by Sally Jordan Reed Obituaries From the Clarion Democrat 1913, 1914, 1915, compiled by Sally Jordan Reed. These books contain full transcriptions of the obits. There may be more books in the series, these were the ones with family members that interested me. These publications may be for sale. They also have a computer database of Cemetery listings in Clarion Co. These consist of the person's name and the inscription from the gravestone, and a key to the name of the cemetery. They can print these out by surname. You must provide the alternative spellings of the name as the search is by exact spelling. We found the listing for the Shannondale Union Cemetery to be incomplete, however, it was certainly a good place to start. We had a good, reasonable family style meal at Izzies Restorante (Italian) East of town on 322. We also ate at Loomis Hotel just a block of so East of the Town Square. It is fancier atmosphere but we did not think it any better than Izzies. If you plan to be in the vacinity of Fryberg you might try Montanas Country Café in Marble, another popular family style restaurant. For those who can go to Clarion to research: The Clarion County Historical Society Library does have quite a nice collection. They used to be upstairs in the museum but have moved to their own facility across the side street. The court house is just across the green so it is a town that is convenient to research. The public library is not "right there" but down the street a few blocks and they have some additional research materials, especially microfilm. There is long-term metered parking around the green and beside the court house. Didn't find any good restaurants (don't take much time to look when I am researching) but there is fast food on the main street Also a convenience store and gas station very nearby. I have often sat in the green and had a snack lunch before going back to work! Happy hunting Virginia Banerjee
