Magness, 329 Hidden Hollow Lane, Rimersburg Raymond LeRoy Mong, getting it right William Craig Daugherty, 72, of 1309 Eastwood Drive, Clarion, died Monday, July 16, 2007, in his home following an extended illness. Born Aug. 30, 1934, in Fisher, he was the son of the late Craig and Pearl Hummel Daugherty. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving for the Commander, XXI U.S. Army Corps from 1957 to 1966. He was discharged with the rank of staff sergeant. Mr. Daugherty worked at Owens-Brockway Glass Co., retiring in 1977 after 30 years of service. He most recently was employed at True Value Hardware in Clarion. He was a member of Clarion Lodge No. 277. F. & A.M., and was a life member of the Scottish Rite Consistory in Coudersport. Having a strong faith, Mr. Daugherty was a member of the First Baptist Church in Clarion. Mr. Daugherty was a former member of the Clarion Lions Club. He enjoyed working and helping others and was a best friend to many people. Mr. Daugherty was married Feb. 23, 1957, to Beverly Curll, who survives. Also surviving are three children, Joan Kriebel of Clarion, Craig Daugherty and wife, Donna, of Hughesville, Md., and Jayne Daugherty of Seattle, Wash.; two grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He also is survived by two sisters, Audrey Lewis and husband, Donald, of Fisher and Adeline Chikosky of Clarion; one brother, Donald Daugherty and wife, Hazel, of Fisher; a sister-in-law, Jessie Daugherty of Maryland Heights, Mo.; a brother-in-law, Ross Curll and wife, Phyllis, of McMurray; and several nieces and nephews. Bowersock Flockerzi. He was a lifetime resident of Cranberry and a member of Calvary United Methodist Church . Mr. Flockerzi served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He retired in May 1991 from the Education and Community Services Comptroller's Office, headquartered in Harrisburg, after 25 years of service. Mr. Flockerzi enjoyed his garden, working outdoors and the Statler Brothers. He especially enjoyed and appreciated his kitty friends, Hayden, Reba and Shay-Boy. Mr. Magness was a truck driver most of his life and recently was employed by Carcia Trucking Co. of Marienville. He enjoyed farming, four wheeling, hunting and spending time with his son. Gladys Marie Rice Corner Gladys Marie Rice Corner, 93, of 183 W. Adams St., Cochranton, died Saturday, July 14, 2007, in her residence. Born Dec. 29, 1913, in Franklin, she was the daughter of the late Burris W. and Mary Ellen Blair Rice. Mrs. Corner had been a member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Cochranton since 1952. She was also a member of the Wynmor Club of Carlton for many years. She was a member of the "Young at Heart" group at the Meadville Christian and Missionary Alliance Church and played the organ there for many years. Mrs. Corner loved music, especially the older hymns. She enjoyed being with her family and friends and writing many letters to people in nursing homes or ill at home. Mrs. Corner was married Dec. 29, 1932, to Edward Corner, who preceded her in death in April 1989. Born in Oil City, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Mary Anna Kresinske Curran and received her early education in St. Joseph Parish schools, Oil City. Sister Nora entered the Benedictine Sisters of Erie in 1943 and graduated from St. Benedict Academy the following year. She made her final profession as a Benedictine Sister Aug. 28, 1947, and had celebrated her 25th, 50th and 60th anniversaries of her profession. She was an accomplished teacher whose education included a bachelor of arts degree is social studies, English and Spanish from Villa Maria College, Erie, and a master of arts degree in Spanish literature from the International University, Saltillo, Mexico, where she later served as dean of women. Her post graduate studies included work at Gannon, Fordham and Georgetown universities. She also received a Fulbright grant for study at the Cartagena University, Bogota, Columbia. Sister Nora taught in several parish elementary schools: St. Mary's, Erie; St. Joseph, Oil City; St. Joseph, Sharon; St. Joseph, Oil City; St. Gregory, North East; and St. Joseph, Sharon. She later taught at St. Joseph and Venango Christian High schools in Oil City and at St. Benedict Academy, Erie. After her service in education, Sister Nora's ministry came to be centered in her deep concern for the poor, especially for the poor in Latin America, whom she served for nearly 30 years in Saltillo, Mexico, and in Cali, Columbia, as teacher, mentor and friend. She returned in recent years to Mount Saint Benedict where her love for the poor continued to be manifested in her monastic life. Denslinger, 80, of lifelong resident of Fryburg, died Saturday, July 14, 2007, surrounded by his family in UPMC Northwest, Seneca, following a lengthy illness. Born Oct. 23, 1926, he was the son of Aloysius and Bertha Siegel Denslinger. Mr. Denslinger worked as a self-employed farmer and retired in 1999 from PennDOT. He drove car No. 333 at the half mile dirt track in Shippenville from 1949 to 1950. Mr. Denslinger served in the Navy from Oct. 13, 1950, to Nov. 19, 1953. He was assigned to the USS Columbus Heavy Cruiser during the Korean War and served in the European Theater. While in the military he achieved the rank of Boatswain Mate 3rd Class. He was a member of St. Michael Church in Fryburg, a member of the Fryburg Sportman Club where he served as secretary for seven years and was a member of St. Michael Society for 10 years. Mr. Denslinger was an honorary member of the Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department. He was married June 12, 1954, to Patricia Rodgers, who survives. Also surviving are three children, Richard Denslinger and wife, Sharon, of Fryburg, Debra Zacherl of Clarion and Lori Smith and husband, Butch, of Clarion; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Rodgers, 96, formerly of 107 E. Second St., Oil City, died at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 14, 2007 in The Caring Place, Franklin. Born Aug. 9, 1910 in Rocky Grove, he was the son of the late Frank Duane and Clara N. Minnis Rodgers. Mr. Rodgers lived in the Oil City area most of his life. He was employed for 23 years as a laborer with Chicago Pneumatic Tool in Franklin, retiring at the age of 65. On Aug. 3, 1957, he was married to Ellen Mae Andrews who preceded him in death on June 17, 1999. Mr. Rodgers was a member of the Oil City Community Alliance Church. He was very active with the Oil City Senior Citizen Center. While staying at The Caring Place, he attended church services there and was a member of the bell choir. He is survived by two daughters, Ella Mae and her husband, Ernest R. "Buck" Butryn of Oil City and Anita Ann Wilson of Lancaster; a sister, Ruth Koziara of Franklin; five grandchildren, Melissa and her husband, Ryan Gerlach, of Lancaster, Bradley E. Wilson of Florida, Christine M. Nies of Cooperstown, David M. Butryn of Cresson and Thomas M. Butryn of Meadville; nine great grandchildren, Joshua W. Gerlach of Lancaster, Bradley E. Wilson II and Brittany E. Wilson, both of Ohio, Brianna N. Wilson of Florida, Ashley J. Butryn of Oil City, Jeff Thompson of Cooperstown, Paige Butryn of Titusville, Thomas M. Butryn II of Ohio and Emily Butryn of Oil City; a brother-in-law, Francis Zagar of Franklin; three sisters-in-law, Marjorie Rodgers of Franklin, Jean Rodgers of Cochranton and Joan Annable of Peach Tree City, Georgia, and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Rodgers was preceded in death by a son, Harry Elmer Rodgers; five brothers, Claude, Wesley, Frank, Kenneth and John Rodgers; five sisters, Ann Meehling, Mabel Mourey, Elizabeth Culbertson, Martha "Teen" Rossman and Josephine L. Mrs. Schwabenbauer had been employed for many years as a bus driver for the Oil City School District. She also had been employed briefly at the former Isaly's Store in Oil City . She was married in Oil City May 3, 1947, to Howard W. "Bill" Schwabenbauer, who preceded her in death April 15, 2001. Surviving are three children, William H. Memorial Funeral Home Inc. of Watervliet, N.Y. Howard Lawrence Schultz, formerly of Oil City, died March 20, 2007, in Northwest Medical Center in Coconut Creek, Fla. Born Oct. 27, 1932, in Oil City, he was the son of Rose and Joseph Schultz. Mr. Schultz graduated from Staunton Military Academy and then Cornell University where he met Nancy Siegel and they were married in 1954. After serving with the U.S. Army in Japan, he returned home to work in the family business, the Oil City Variety Store. In the 1990s, Mr. and Mrs. Schultz moved to Maryland where Mr. Schultz owned One Stop News in the George Washington University Mall. An avid runner since his teens, Mr. Schultz competed in numerous marathons. He loved books, crossword puzzles, old movies, bridge and golf, and most of all, he loved his family. Surviving are his daughters, Amy Strauss of Woodcliff Lake, N.J., and Carla Schultz-Skraly of Westboro, Mass., and their spouses, Michael Strauss and Sam Skraly; and his grandchildren, Schuyler and Zachary Strauss and Chloe and Madison Skraly. He also is survived by his brother, DJ Schultz of Pittsburgh. Burial was in Beth Israel Cemetery in Woodbridge, N.J., next to his beloved wife, Nancy. Nancy Siegel Schultz, formerly of Oil City, died Dec. 16, 2006, in Hackensack University Hospital in New Jersey. Born July 25, 1933, in New York City, she was the daughter of Harry and Celia Siegel. She attended Bronx Science and then Cornell University where she met Howard Schultz and they were married in 1954. While her husband served his tour of duty with the U.S. Army, stationed in Japan, Mrs. Schultz taught remedial English to U.S. soldiers stationed there. Mr. and Mrs. Schultz returned to Oil City where she became an English teacher, first at Rocky Grove High School and then at Oil City High School, and earned her MA from Allegheny College, Meadville. Up until the day she died, she was in contact with many of her former students who spoke of the influence and impact she had on their lives. A firm believer in the power of education, Mrs. Schultz enrolled in Duquesne University Law School at age 40, commuting the 90 miles each way at night and continuing to teach during the day. Upon graduation, she became a public defender and then established a solo practice. In the 1990s, Mrs. Schultz and her husband moved to Maryland and she became corporation counsel for the District of Columbia. In 2000, they retired to Coconut Creek, Fla., and Lakewood, N.J. Surviving are her daughters, Amy Strauss of Woodcliff Lake, N.J., and Carla Schultz-Skraly of Westboro, Mass., and their spouses, Michael Strauss and Sam Skraly; and her grandchildren, Schuyler and Zachary Strauss and Chloe and Madison Skraly. Burial was in Beth Israel Cemetery in Woodbridge, N.J., next to her beloved husband, Howard. Shirley J. Reagle Vogus-Burke, 74, of Tavares, Fla., died Jan. 26, 2007, at home with her loving husband, William L. Burke, and caregivers after a long and courageous battle with congestive heart failure. Born Feb. 25, 1932, in Titusville, she was the daughter of the late Charles R. and Velola V. Reagle. She was a graduate of Titusville High School. Mrs. Vogus-Burke sold Avon Cosmetics and Beeline Clothes and also worked at Oil City Hospital as a nurse's aide. She was a certified nursing assistant for Polk State School and Hospital for approximately 20 years, retiring in 1992. She was married Sept. 2, 1950, to Clarence I. Vogus, who died Nov. 11, 1992. In 1995, she moved from Pennsylvania to Florida and was married Feb. 24, 2001, to Bill Burke of Tavares, Fla. He survives. Mrs. Vogus-Burke was a member of the Lake Square Presbyterian Church of Leesburg, Fla., the VFW Auxiliary and the Aqua-Knots Boat Club. She was an avid bowler and enjoyed swing band, line dancing, ceramics and being creative in the art of crocheting. Although she had many interests, her great love was spending time with her husband, Bill, and helping her children and their families. Surviving, in addition to her husband, are his five children, Mike, Barbara, Judi, Bobby and Steve; a brother, Darrell Reagle of Ohio; two daughters, Connie Hedglin of Cordes Lakes, Ariz., and Col. Diana Bodner of Folsom, Calif.; a son, Major Ronald Vogus of Fayetteville, N.C.; a grandson, Michael, of Arizona; three granddaughters, Carson, Molly and Stephanie of North Carolina; an aunt, Frances Wood of Corry; and a number of cousins, nephews, nieces and many friends. Garbarino, 93, a longtime Clarion resident, died Wednesday, July 11, 2007, in St. Vincent Health Center, Erie. Born Feb. 21, 1914, in Brynedale, he was the son of Leo H. and Margarette Hayes Garbarino. He had 10 siblings, seven of whom preceded him in death. In 1935, the Garbarino family moved to Clarion where George started and managed a Nationwide grocery store; his father operated a Firestone Store; and his brother, Hayes, build and ran the Garby Theatre which was named for his father, with all three businesses located on Main Street in Clarion. In 1956, Mr. Garbarino opened and managed the Super Value Market at the east end of Clarion. The market eventually became the BiLo store. He was an active member of the community, being a founding member of the Autumn Leaf Festival; was an officer of the Chamber of Commerce; a member of the advisory board of First Seneca Bank; and chairman of various charitable fund raisers. Mr. Garbarino was a member of the Elks and VFW and was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He was married to Frances McDonald who died June 19, 2001. Three of their six children preceded them in death. Surviving are a son, Barry and his wife, Gwen, of Evergreen, Colo., a daughter, Judy Siegel of Erie, and a son, Jack and his wife, Denise, of Charleston, S.C.; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Garbarino, Clarion Edward Earl Shields, 2360 Rockland Road, Cranberry Hubert Jack Bartlett Hubert Jack Bartlett, 87, a former Oil City resident and a 1938 graduate of Oil City High School, died Friday, June 22, 2007, at an Alzheimer's care facility in Ormond, Fla. He served a tour of duty in the U.S. Navy during World War II, then returned to Oil City where he lived with his family for many years while working as a patternmaker at Oil Well Supply. Arthur E. Berko Arthur E. Berko, 60, of 47 Taylor Drive, Reedsville, Pa., died at 11:06 a.m. Tuesday, July 10, 2007, in Milton S. Hershey Medical Center 's Surgical Intensive Care Unit. Born April 12, 1947, in Bronx, N,Y., he was the son of the late Eugene and Hannah Cohen Berko. He was a Vietnam veteran of the U.S. Navy and was a member of the elite Silent Service/Submarine Service. He was a sonar technician who served on board the USS Simon Bolivar, on which his son later served, the USS Abraham Lincoln, USS Senate, USS Trout and the Submarine Tender USS Canopus. Mr. Berko worked for Macy's Department Store and Minit Mart in Belleville. He previously was employed in sales for Metropolitan Life, Bell Telephone and Southern Bell Telephone where he retired. He was a past member of the Burnham Lions Club. Mr. Berko was an avid bowler in several leagues throughout his life. On Jan. 5, 2004, he bowled a perfect game of 300. He also was an animal lover. He was an old salt and a fisherman and loved his New York Yankees. He was a best friend for many people in his life. Mr. Berko was married April 27, 1968, to Linda L. Schulze, who survives. McCoy Gordon, 97, of McCoy Road, Emlenton, died at 12:20 p.m. Monday, July 9, 2007, in her residence following a brief illness. Born June 4, 1910, in Scrubgrass Township, Venango County, she was the daughter of Plumer V. and Cora M. Leyda Eakin. She had lived the majority of her life in the Emlenton area. She was the last remaining member of her Clintonville High School Class of 1927, which marked its 80-year reunion June 23. Earlier in life, Mrs. Gordon was a member of the East Unity Presbyterian Church in Cherry Valley Borough, Butler County, and after her marriage she became a very active member of the Scrubgrass Stone Church where she played piano for the Sunday school classes each week until her 80s. She also belonged to the Clara Counter Bible Class of the church. Mrs. Gordon was very helpful and cheerful and was a devoted housewife and mother. She enjoyed reading, gardening, raising flowers, quilting, needlework and baking. She was an active farm wife who enjoyed the many tasks involved to keep a farm operating. She started writing poetry at age 73 and wrote until she was 96. She had written 14 complete books of poetry about her family and life's experiences. She also played the piano in the Scrubgrass Grange Band which included three generations of her family. Surviving are three children, Jean M. Milliron and husband, Vernon E., and Joseph P. McCoy and wife, Susan E., all of Emlenton, and John C. McCoy of Polk; two stepdaughters, Mae McGinnis and husband, Mac, of Emlenton and Helen Reichart and husband, Eugene, of Pittsburgh; grandchildren, Cathy R. and Michelle D. McCoy of Emlenton, Philip N. McCoy and wife, Anoma D., of Mountain View, Calif., Daniel J. McCoy and wife, Stephanie, of Sarver, Stephen E. Milliron and wife, Frances, of Emlenton and Scott E. Milliron and wife, Melissa, of Harrisville; and great-grandchildren, Joshua, Jack and Katie McCoy of Sarver. In addition to her parents and both husbands, she was preceded in death by a brother, Clarence P. Eakin, July 30, 1998, and two stepdaughters, Mary Young and June Kemery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in the Larry E. McKinley Funeral Home, 109 Emlenton St., Clintonville. Swartfager, 60, of 141 Pheasant Farm Road, Distant, died at 5:18 a.m. Monday, July 9, 2007, in UPMC Pittsburgh. Born July 14, 1946, in Moriah, N.Y., she was the daughter of Arthur and Dorothy Pooler Carpenter. Mrs. Swartfager was a homemaker. She was married March 25, 2000, to Terry A. Swartfager, who survives. Also surviving are three sons, Eric A. Sherman of Saranac Lake, N.Y., Jeffrey W. Sherman of Essex, N.Y., and Brian A. Sherman of Albany, N.Y.; and three grandchildren, Thomas E. Sherman, Adam N. Sherman and Zachary Sherman. She also is survived by her father and her stepmother, Arthur and Honora Carpenter of Westport, N.Y.; one sister, Bonnie Lawrence of Clarksville, N.Y.; two stepchildren, Michelle Lynn Dileo of Harmarille and Brian A. Mr. Conner was employed as a laborer for Crawford Furniture in Fairmount City. He was a member of St. Charles Church in New Bethlehem and the Knights of Columbus. Mr. Conner was married Oct. 12, 1940, to Kathryn E. Biehm, who died Aug. 20, 1989. Surviving are three sons, J. Michael Conner of Nicktown. Raymond D. Conner and wife, Jean, of Mayport and Jerome F. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, playing cards, taking trips to Atlantic City and was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers. He also was an avid reader of western novels. During her tenure there, she not only touched the lives of many young people but also aided in fostering in them and their families hope and guidance for the future. In 1986, Mrs. Prestridge left her position with Easter Seals to become a social worker for Venango County Children and Youth Services. Until declining healthy forced her early retirement, she thoroughly enjoyed being with the children and aiding in their welfare. She will be remembered by those, especially the children, who had come to know and trust in her. Mrs. Prestridge was a faithful member of the Sugarcreek United Methodist Church where she enjoyed singing and taking part as a member of the church choir. She also was a long-time member of the Valley Grove School Board. As her health permitted, she enjoyed gardening and especially raising flowers around her home. She especially enjoyed spending time with her labrador retriever, Angel. Mrs. Prestridge was married in Tucson, Ariz., Aug. 9, 1980, to Tom H. Prestridge, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Kelli L. Prestridge of Franklin; and a special uncle and aunt, Harold "Buzz" Hoover and his wife, Alice, of Mercer. There was a Finnefrock in Franklin in the 50s and following. He was written up in the Derrick two or three years ago. Seems he was a rather well known inventor. You might check the archives (www.thederrick.com ) The family had roots in the Clarion/Armstrong/Jefferson County area. The Derrick, July 9, 2007: Kyel L. Haney, 207 E. Fourth St., Oil City F. Miriam Hummel, Guys Mills Mary Lou Kritikos, Port Vue Carol L. Prestridge, 325 Sugarcreek Drive, Franklin Kyel L. Haney, 80, of 207 E. Fourth St., Oil City, died at 7:31 p.m. Friday, July 6, 2007, in UPMC Northwest, Seneca, following an extended illness. Born Aug. 21, 1926, in Franklin, he was the son of Leo P. and Leona V. Greggs Haney. Mr. Haney attended Franklin area schools. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army as a MP, with duty in the European Theater of Operations. Mr. Haney's working career started at the General Manifold in Franklin and from there he went to work for the Pennzoil Refining Co. in Rouseville, retiring after 35 years of service. He was a member of St. Stephen Church. Mr. Haney was a loyal member of the Oil City Eagles Club where many acknowledged him as one of the best card players around. In earlier years, Mr. Haney enjoyed dancing, fishing, bowling and playing pool and cards and the camaraderie with his family and friends. He was the 1961 duckpin bowling champion of the Oil City Merchant League. He was married Aug. 12, 1950, in St. Joseph Church to the former Sebastiana Zamora, who survives. Also surviving are six children, Gary Haney of Millbrook, Ala., Michael Haney of Oil City, Mary Lockwood and husband, Howard, of Tampa, Fla., Patricia Young and husband, Robert, of Arvada, Colo., Cindy Bennett of Roanoke, Texas, and Theresa Ragon and husband, Matt, of Oil City; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Marion Simonis. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the Reinsel Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Stephen Church with the Rev. Matthew Ruyechan, pastor, presiding. Military honors will follow in the church after Mass. Miriam Hummel, 81, of Guys Mills, died Sunday, July 8, 2007, in Wesbury's Grace Health Center, Meadville, where she resided for the past six months. She had resided from May 1954 to October 2006 on Route 27 in the Village of Black Ash, Guys Mills. Born May 25, 1926, in Norristown, she was a daughter of Christian and Lydia Hemighaus Huber. She graduated in 1943 from Eisenhower Senior High School in Norristown and graduated in 1946 from the Philadelphia General Hospital School of Nursing. She was a member of the Cadet Nurse Corps when in training. Mrs. Hummel worked as a registered nurse at Philadelphia General Hospital for one year before briefly working at Franklin Hospital and then was employed until 1974 at Titusville Hospital. She and her husband owned and operated Hummel's Gun Shop from 1981 to 1995 from their home in Black Ash. Always putting others before herself and trying to make a difference in the field of medicine, Mrs. Hummel participated for decades in Nurses' Health Study of Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, Mass. In January 2005 when having difficulty swallowing and later in speaking she was diagnosed with progressive bulbar palsy, a nerve disorder that left her speechless by May 2006. Never losing her sense of humor, she laughed in the face of adversity by using the e-mail address of "speechless" after learning about computers at age 77. In December 2006 she was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's Disease, received a feeding tube in January 2007 and soon after went to Wesbury. Always being independent and able to fend for herself, her biggest difficulty throughout these times was needing others to do for her. Mrs. Hummel was of the Protestant faith. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and doing crossword puzzles prior to her illness. She was married March 7, 1949, to the love of her life, Harold E. Hummel, who preceded her in death Feb. 22, 2003. Surviving are four children, Kathy A. Huber and husband, Gary, of Norristown, Larry E. Hummel and wife, Marjorie, of Lakeland, Fla., Bruce A. Hummel and wife, Deborah, of Kent, Ohio, and Lynn M. Hummel and companion, Roger W. Kaelin, with whom she briefly lived in Conneaut Lake after selling her home; seven grandchildren, Crystal M. Huber of Norristown, Yvonne Hummel Hickey and husband, Lonnie, of Cincinnati, Ohio, Melissa Hummel Sasser and husband, Aaron, of Monetta, S.C., Eric Hummel and wife, Karen, of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, Bryan Hummel of Kent, Ohio, Michael Rhoades and wife, LeAnn, of Meadville and Matthew Rhoades of Mount Hope, Guys Mills; five great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Hummel was predeceased by her stepfather, William P. Aker Sr.; her sister, Margaret "Peggy" Huber Lee; and her brother, William P.
