Judy Charles E. Judy, 94, of Pittsburgh, a former resident of Lucinda, died Thursday, Sept. 13, 2007, in Pittsburgh. Among his survivors are a brother-in-law, August Stepura of the Golden Living Center, Shippenville, and numerous nieces and nephews in the area. Mary Evelyn Kespelher Mary Evelyn Kespelher, 82, of 327 Eddyville Road, New Bethlehem, died Thursday, Sept. 13, 2007, in her residence. Born Sept. 3, 1925, in Eddyville, Armstrong County, she was the daughter of Doyle C. and Sara M. Best Schreckengost. Mrs. Kespelher was a homemaker and a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church in Eddyville. She was a homemaker who loved animals, crocheting and gardening. She enjoyed being around children and often was their baby sitter. Mrs. Kespelher was married June 23, 1963, to Edward Kespelher, who died in 1977. Surviving are one daughter and her husband, Mary Beth and David Dunkle of New Bethlehem; two granddaughters, Audrey Donato and husband, Earth, of Tionesta and Kayla Dunkle of New Bethlehem; and one stepson, Timothy Young of North Carolina. She also is survived by two sisters, June McCauley and husband, Elmer, of New Bethlehem (Leatherwood) and Eunice McKinley of Corsica; one brother and his wife, Harry and Pauline Schreckengost of New Bethlehem (Eddyville); and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Ormel and Russell Schreckengost. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Alcorn Funeral Home in Hawthorn. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Mark Lutheran Church with Pastor Ralph Kilgore officiating. Interment will be in Eddyville Cemetery, Mahoning Township, Armstrong County. Helen W. McElhattan Helen W. McElhattan, 91, of South Second Avenue, Clarion, died Thursday evening, Sept. 13, 2007, in Clarion Hospital. Kirsten Renee Pettit Kirsten Renee Pettit, infant daughter of Tyler and Kala Beatty Pettit of Oil City, was stillborn at 12:28 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2007, in UPMC Northwest, Seneca. In addition to her parents, Kirsten is survived by one sister, Arianna Marie Pettit. Also surviving are her grandparents, Steve and Tina Beatty, Jessica and Leland Black and Robert Sibble; great-grandparents, Bertha Davis, Kate and Ed Beatty, Lillian Updyke, and Angelo and Margaret Port. "Peg" Russell, 85, of Paradise Valley, Ariz., formerly of Oil City, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2007, in Spokane, Wash. Born May 6, 1922, in New Castle, she was the daughter of Charles Ross and Alice Elizabeth Wicks Lutton. Mrs. Russell was a graduate of New Castle High School. She worked at Shenango Pottery and retired from Jamesway in Reno. Mrs. Russell was a member since 1968 of Grace United Methodist Church in Oil City where she was an active member of the United Methodist Women, lay leader for many years, taught "Open Door Class" for 20 years and was a Sunday school teacher for most of her adult life. She was a lifetime member of the Oil City Cycle Club and the American Motorcycle Association. On Nov. 21, 1942, she married Charles L. Russell, who preceded her in death Dec. 11, 1982. Surviving are three children, Elaine E. Wintersteen and husband, John, of Paradise Valley, Ariz., Marilyn Russell of Cheney, Wash., and Richard C. Russell and wife, Wilma, of Sligo; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Russell was preceded in death by two brothers, James F. Lutton and Charles F. Lutton; and two sisters, Betty J. Lutton and Jean K. Spencer. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the Morrison Funeral Home. "Curley" Miller, Greenville, formerly of Grove City, Franklin and Barkeyville Margaret J. Orsega, 97, formerly of 424 Fourth St., Franklin Violet Phillips, 425 Black Hill Road, Franklin Margaret May Lutton Russell, Paradise Valley, Ariz., formerly of Oil City Shirley C. Ekman, 73, of 1 Sycamore St., Oil City, died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2007, in her home. Born Feb. 17, 1934, she was the daughter of Daniel Patrick Cotter and Mary Leynaud Cotter and was raised in Houtzdale. Mrs. Ekman graduated from Houtzdale-Woodward High School and throughout her working years took accredited college courses and attended many seminars to enhance her knowledge of geriatrics, psychology, bio-feedback, relocation, cosmetology and relocation of people from abroad and inter-state. She was an avid reader who loved the classics, classical music, opera and the theater. She was an active member of Community Playhouse Inc. of Oil City for more than 30 years. She served two terms as treasurer on the board of directors. She directed and produced plays, wrote and directed many of the annual "Honky Tonks," worked backstage and was cast in many acting roles. Many remember her performance as Agnes Gooch in the musical "Mame." Her last role was in the 1997 production of "Morning at Seven." She was made emeritus member in 2000 but remained active co-writing grants to help renovate the Lyric Theater. Mrs. Ekman was employed for 14 years at Brody's Department Store in Oil City as a buyer of cosmetics. She served for eight years as program director of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program of Venango County. It was during this tenure that she instigated and initiated the literacy program into Venango County , a feat of which she was proud since the rate of illiteracy is high in the county. She was a relocation recruiter for eight years for All Points Relocation Inc. in Atlanta, Ga. She returned to Oil City in 1992 and worked for Green Thumb of Pennsylvania. She later worked as a home health aide for VNA of Venango County. She sat on advisory boards for the American Cancer Society, Human Services and the March of Dimes Walk-a-thon in Atlanta, Ga. She also helped serve meals to the needy for Salvation Army holiday meals in Atlanta. Mrs. Ekman loved to travel and learn about different cultures. She traveled to England, Wales, Ireland, Spain, South America, Africa and 40 of the 50 United States. Surviving are her three sons and their wives, Christopher and Susan Stewart of Oil City, James P. and Ruth Stewart of Shippenville and C. Michael and Debra Stewart of Kinston, N.C.; and five grandchildren, Rachael and Ryan Stewart of Oil City, Benjamin and Gabrielle Stewart of Shippenville and Erin Stewart of Kinston, N.C. She also is survived by her sisters, Catherine Smith, Evelyn Tubo, Patricia Wulderk and Frances Hagan, and brothers-in-law, Raymond Wulderk and Gerald Hagan, all of Houtzdale. She also has 23 nieces and nephews and many grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Louis, Daniel and Eugene Cotter; a sister, Florence Kost; a sister-in-law, Kathryn Cotter; and three brothers-in-law, James Tubo, Andrew Kost and John Smith. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in the Morrison Funeral Home, Oil City. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 noon Saturday in St. Stephen Church where she was an active participant. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Oil City. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of one's choice or to the Oil City Library. Donald Edward Fulmer Donald Edward Fulmer, 89, of 1231 Otter St., Apt. 1, Franklin, died at 6:55 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2007, in his residence. Born March 2, 1918, in Foxburg, he was the son of John L. and Maude Stover Fulmer. He served as a U.S. Army medic during World War II. Mr. Fulmer was a retired truck driver from Jones Motor Freight (Erie Trucking). He was married Aug. 23, 1952, to Geraldine Anne Doran, who survives. Also surviving are six children, JoAnn Paden and husband, Dennis, and Melissa Brunton and husband, Ralph, all of Franklin, Cindy Smith and husband, Paul, of Endeavor, Jennifer Stoyer and husband, Rex, of Aurora, Ohio, Carol Bevington and husband, Larry, and Tom Fulmer and wife, Joan, all of Maple Heights, Ohio; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Elizabeth 'Betty' Kurpis Hantz Elizabeth "Betty" Kurpis Hantz, 78, of Jefferson Street, Clarion, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2007, in the Clarion Hospital. Born June 27, 1929, in Monroe Township, Clarion County, she was the daughter of Stanley and Martha Vitka Kurpis. Mrs. Hantz was a homemaker and a beautician. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Clarion. Mrs. Hantz was an avid gardener and loved working with her flowers. She was married Aug. 5, 1950, to Harold Hantz, who survives. Also surviving are one brother, Stanley Kurpis of Hubbard, Ohio; and one sister, Helen Warner of Warren, Pa. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hantz was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Donahue; and an infant brother. He resided in Barkeyville for more than 50 years. Born April 5, 1923, in Jefferson County, he was the son of Wilbert F. and Hazel L. Smith Miller. He was in the Conservation Corps serving in Idaho and New Mexico. Mr. Miller was a welder at Joy Manufacturing Co. in Franklin, retiring Oct. 30, 1986, after 18 years of service. Born Sept. 26, 1909, in Newell, Allegheny County, she was the daughter of Michael and Margaret Costello Orsega. Miss Orsega lived in Franklin much of her life and was a member of St. Patrick Church. She worked at the Manifold as a laborer and retired after 36 years of service. Miss Orsega enjoyed walking around the community and visiting with family and friends. Surviving are two nephews, Harold E. "Gene" Baker of Franklin and Wendell C. Baker and wife, Ruth, of Franklin; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. Born April 17, 1923, in Franklin, she was the daughter of Harold and Harriet Patton Baker. Mrs. Phillips was employed for 27 years by the Franklin Area School District as cafeteria cashier and teacher's aide at Sandycreek Elementary School, retiring in 1995. She was a former member of the Eagles Auxiliary. Mrs. Phillips enjoyed bingo and the friends that she made while playing. She also enjoyed playing cards and belonged to two different card clubs. She was married April 18, 1943, to Clair W. Phillips Sr., who preceded her in death. Surviving are two children, Clair W. He married Helen Vera Long, d/o James Long and Lilly Wilson, was born Nov 20, 1896 in Sanilac Co., MI, but was raised near Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I am trying find when and where they married. Since they lived so far apart, it is difficult to determine the "when" and "where" of the marriage. Any and All help will be appreciated. Orsega, formerly of 424 Fourth St., Franklin Memorial set for Jerry F. Boyles Jack V. Dibble Jack V. Dibble, 84, of 428 E. Walnut St., Titusville, died at 10:05 p.m. Monday, Sept.10, 2007, in his residence. Born July 19, 1923, in Titusville, he was the son of William and Elsie Harvey Dibble. He attended Titusville High School and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946. Mr. Dibble was employed as a block operator by the Pennsylvania Railroad for 22 years, worked as a forest fire warden and retired in 1984 from Oil Creek State Park where he was a foreman. During those years he also started several businesses either as a partner or sole proprietor, including Dibble Excavating, Dibble's Grocery, the Deluxe Carwash on Central Avenue Ext. in Titusville, Church Run Orchard and Church Run Belgian. He was a member of St. Walburga Church, Titusville, a past treasurer and member of the Oil Creek Beagle Club, a member of the Belgian Draft Horse Association, Farmers Bureau Association and a board member of the Crawford County Conservation District. Mr. Dibble was married May 14, 1949, in the Assumption B.V.M. Church, Oil City, to Mary Gill, who died Feb. 21, 2007. Surviving are three children, Alan Dibble and wife, Mary, Lorraine Schwab and husband, Charles, and Susan Dibble, all of Titusville; nine grandchildren, Lisa Bruette and husband, Matt, of Hagerstown, Md., Jessica Diamond and husband, Pat, of Richmond, Va., Katherine Hartshorne and husband, Joseph, Jason Dibble, Benjamin Dibble, Alison Dibble, Kyle Schwab and Adam Schwab, all of Titusville, and Nathan Schwab, a student in Texas; and three great-grandchildren, Adeline Hartshorne, Ava Hartshorne and Isabella Bruette. He also is survived by one sister, Lillian Becker of Leeper; two brothers, G. Thomas Dibble and wife, Agnes, of Titusville and Merle Dibble and wife, Peggy, of Pleasantville; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Dibble was preceded in death by an infant son, John Dibble; two granddaughters, Stacey Dibble and Emily Dibble; and two brothers, Ralph Dibble and Harvey Dibble. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the Gordon B. Garrett Funeral Home, 303 N. Washington St., Titusville. A vigil service will be conducted at 3:45 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday in St. Walburga Church with the Rev. D.G. Davis III, pastor of the Catholic Community of Titusville, presiding. Interment will be in St. Catharine Cemetery with full military rites accorded by officers and members of the VFW Bruce Shorts Post No. 5958 of Titusville. The family requests memorial contributions be made to a charity of one 's choice. Shirley C. Ekman Shirley C. Ekman, 73, of The Luther Place, 1 Sycamore St., Oil City, died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2007, in her home. The Morrison Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. A complete obituary will be published Thursday in The Derrick. Janet L. Gates, 74, of 239 Grant St., Franklin, died at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2007, in UPMC Northwest, Seneca. Born Oct. 27, 1932, in Canal Township, Utica, she was the daughter of the Rev. Chester C. Beggs and Harriet Boughner Beggs. Mrs. Gates was employed in the warehouse at Polk Center. She was a member of the Franklin Church of the Nazarene. She also was treasurer of the Franklin Free Methodist Church where she also had been the organist for a number of years. Mrs. Gates previously sang with "Songs of the Night." Surviving are a daughter, Janet L. Gourley of Franklin; three grandchildren, Brandon L. Gourley and fiancée, Rebecca Deeter of Pittsburgh, Janet L. Gourley of Cedarburgh, Wis., and Danette E. Gourley of Jackson, Wis.; and one great-grandchild, Lorelie L. Gourley. She also is survived by a sister, Joyce E. Moriarty and husband, Johnny, of Franklin; a brother, Gerald A. Beggs and wife, Lucille, of Kent, Ohio; and a special friend, Alice S. Resinger of Franklin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Harold D. Beggs. Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the Robert W. Gardinier Funeral Home, 1315 Chestnut St., Franklin. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in the funeral home with the Rev. Donald Chamberlain officiating. Interment will be in Peters Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Venango County Humane Society. Condolences may be sent to gardinierfuneralhome.com. Margaret J. Orsega Margaret J. Orsega, 97, formerly of 424 Fourth St., Franklin, died at 8:35 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2007, in Sugar Creek Station, Franklin. The Reinsel Funeral Home, Oil City, is in charge of arrangements. A complete obituary will be published Thursday in The News-Herald. Memorial set for Jerry F. Boyles A memorial service for Jerry Frank Boyles, 77, of Ashland, Ky., a former Oil City resident, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the First Presbyterian Church, 215 E. Bissell Ave., Oil City. Interment will follow in Grove Hill Cemetery, Oil City. Mr. Boyles, a 1948 graduate of Oil City High School, died Aug. 21, 2007, in his home following an extended illness. Among those preceding him in death were a niece, Nancy Boyles, and a nephew, Scott Sowers, both of Oil City.
