In case this was someone's family member, his WWI dog tag sold on eBay in November. Here is the description: This item is a .835 silver French 2 Francs coin from the time of World War I. On the reverse of the coin, it has been smoothed and engraved, Wm. R. Lawrence, 1274204, U.S.A. After doing some research, I determined the number to be a WWI era Army serial number. After doing a little more research, I think I have found the original owner of this item but I am not sure. I have no way to search the serial number. His name was William Ross Lawrence and he was a private from Clarion, Pennsylvania. After joining the 16th(112th) infantry in 1917, he was sent to France where the 112th was part of the first army under John J. Pershing. On October 1st, 1918, at the age of 23, during the battle of Argonne Forest, he lost his life. According to national cemetery records he is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. Once again, I do not know this to be fact without checking the serial number. This coin was found in an estate lot with other french coins from 1916-1919. I don't think there was any direct connection with the estate, so I don't know how this found its way to Virginia. If you have any questions or information, please do not hesitate to ask! I do have a few more details about the possible owner. This is what I found from records, a book, and from a couple old newpaper articles. William Ross Lawrence - Private - Company D 16th Infantry Enlisted July 14th, 1917, Oil City PA. From Clarion, PA. Killed in Action, October 1, 1918 on the west front in France in the battle of the Argonne Forest while under the command of John J. Pershing and while in the first army. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lawrence, he was born January 18, 1895 in Port Norris, NJ. Worked in the glass industry prior to enlisting. Enlisted in Company D, 112th Infantry, July 5th, 1917. Brothers and Sisters: Charles Mason Lawrence and Mrs. Monroe Langly of Clarion, PA C.E. Lawrence, Westville, NJ. L.E. Lawrence, Woodbury, NJ. Brother B.R. Lawrence, private in 319 Infantry in France, reported missing Oct. 5th. Mr. Lawrence was a member of the First Methodist Church of Clarion and of the Upper Room Bible Class.
