Houser, 205 South Park St., Franklin Kitty Allen Reddinger, Distant Getting it right - Jack Ray Schmader Ruth H. Bailey, 96, passed away Monday, Oct. 13, 2008, in Shallotte, N.C. Ruth was born in Mannington, W.Va. She was a graduate of Edinboro State College. She and her husband, Dr. John W. (Jack) Bailey, DDS, married and moved to Franklin in 1937, where they lived until 1977. While in Franklin, Ruth was an active member of the American Red Cross, Eastern Star, and the First Presbyterian Church of Franklin. She is survived by her son, John, Jr. (Jay) and daughter-in-law, Becca, who reside in Louisville, Ky.; her daughter, Karen and son-in-law, Dennis, who reside in Little River, S.C.; and also survived by five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Ruth is predeceased by her husband; her parents; two sisters; and one brother. Ruth will be remembered by her family and friends for her strong faith and gentle manner. Joyce A. Houser, 82, a resident of 205 South Park St., Franklin, died at 2:40 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, 2008, in UPMC Northwest, Seneca, following an extended illness. Miss Houser was born on Palm Sunday, April 18, 1926, in Long Beach, Calif., a beloved daughter of the late Eugene Curtis and Ruth (Oseau) Houser. She attended Woodrow Wilson High School and was a graduate of Long Beach City College. She had worked for the County of Los Angeles Red Feather Services in the City of Compton's Child Care Services Division. While in California, she was a member of the Belmont Heights Methodist Episcopal Church. She had taught both children and youth of the church. During World War II, she had served abroad with the U.S.O. Upon the death of her father, she had come back East with her mother to live in Franklin. While in Franklin, she was employed at Polk Center in both Residential and Habilatative Services for nearly 30 years. Miss Houser joined the First United Methodist Church in Franklin and was a member of the church for more than 50 years. She had held membership in the United Methodist Women's Group of the church and had served various positions by appointment. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She is survived by her special friend, Kathy K. Peterson, of Franklin; and several cousins throughout the area. Friends may call from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday in the Timothy E. Hartle Funeral Home, 1328 Elk St., Franklin. Funeral services will be conducted at 6 p.m. Friday in the funeral home with the Rev. David Jenz, pastor of Christ United Methodist Church, Franklin, officiating. Interment will be in Franklin Cemetery. McDonald Getting it right - Betty Long Wilt Marilyn A. (Hill) Boyer, 83, formerly of Oil City, passed away peacefully at 8:40 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008, with her family at her side, in the Lake Anna Elder Care Home in Bumpass, Va., near Richmond. Born May 15, 1925, in Dempseytown, she was the daughter of the late Forrest E. and Lottie Turner Hill. Mrs. Boyer attended Oakland Township High School and graduated from Oil City High School in 1943. She was an active member of the Oil City First Church of God, holding various positions including president of the Oil City Women of the Church of God for 20 years, Sunday School teacher, choir member, pianist and organist. She was still teaching Sunday School and playing the organ at age 77. She continued serving the church as pianist, at the Church of God in Richmond until age 80. In addition, to her service at her local church, she served as secretary for the Western Pennsylvania Women of the Church of God for 15 years. Mrs. Boyer worked in the offices of the Boy Scouts of America, Worthington Corp. and the First Church of God in Oil City. Her hobbies and interests included politics, girls basketball, reading, cooking, gardening, and attending Church of God camp meetings, both in Emlenton and in Anderson, Ind. She also enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially her grandchildren. She was married in Dempseytown on June 9, 1951, to Evan C. Boyer, who preceded her in death on July 2, 2004. Surviving are a daughter, Connie Boyer and husband, Thomas Rogers, of Richmond, Va; three sons, Ronald Boyer and wife, Polly, of Kettering, Ohio, Donald Boyer and wife, Diane, of Severn, Md. and Vaughn Boyer of Tampa, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Dr. Robert Boyer of Boston, Mass., Angela Boyer of Columbus, Ohio, Heather Boyer of Kettering, Ohio, Christopher Boyer of Indiana, and Michael, Steven, and Rebecca Boyer, all of Severn, Md. Also surviving are a sister, Ruth Gricks of Oil City; a brother, Forrest Hill of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Bernice Martino. Born Aug. 5, 1926, in Cottage Hill, Porter Township, he was the son of Fredrick John McConaughy and Audrey Katherine (Wells) McConaughey. He was a laborer for Amos Dolby Company. Mr. McConaughy was affiliated with Oakland Church of God in Distant. He was first married to Marie (Wadding) McConaughy, and she passed away in 1993. He then married Cleda Virginia (Eckard) McConaughy, and she survives in New Bethlehem. Mr. McConaughy enjoyed hunting. He is survived by two sons, Robert B. and Pamela McConaughy of Hawthorn and James F. McConaughy of Rimersburg; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Marie McConaughy; one son, William McConaughy; and two daughters, Susan and Patricia McConaughy. Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Alcorn Funeral Home in Hawthorn. Born Jan. 30, 1909, in Grove City, he was the son of Andrew Montgomery and Bertha (Welton) Montgomery. Mr. Montgomery lived in the area his entire life. He was a 1928 graduate of Harrisville High School. He owned Montgomery Block Plant of Harrisville, where he worked from 1935 to 1973, when he retired. He also worked at Cooper-Bessemer in Grove City as a machinist from 1928 to 1945. Mr. Montgomery was a member of Harmony Presbyterian Church in Harrisville, where he was a former trustee. He was the last surviving Charter member of the Harrisville Lions Club. He was a member of Grove City Lodge 603 F&AM, a member of New Castle Consistory, Syria Shrine, and a former member of Grove City Sportsman Club. He was an avid bowler for more than 40 years, an avid hunter and an avid traveler, visiting all of the states except Alaska. Mr. Montgomery was married to Sarah M. (Renick) Montgomery on May 28, 1941. He is survived by one daughter, Cheryl Dee Strader of Harrisville; two grandchildren, Kimberly A. Bromley of West Chester and Douglas A. Strader and his wife, Theresa, of Baltimore, Md.; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Dorothy Hoffmann of Grove City. Mae Rothen, 69, of Emlenton died at 12:56 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008, in Butler Memorial Hospital, following an illness. She was born April 23, 1939, in Wexford, a daughter of William G. and Mary Elser. She was a long-time active member of St. Michael Roman Catholic Church in Emlenton, and she also was a member of the church's Altar Rosary Society, Soup Group and PURLS ministry. She enjoyed collecting prayer books and working puzzles. Mrs. Rothen was a homemaker and enjoyed the company of her family and friends. She and Carl F. Rothen Jr. were married Oct. 6, 1962, at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Cabot, Butler County. Mr. Rothen, whom she loved, adored and missed very much, preceded her in death on Dec. 19, 2004. Born May 23, 1924, in Kennerdell, he was a son of Ralph Sopher and Melissa Mae (Gadsby) Sopher, Rae served in the Army Air Force during World War II and was a member of the Air Force Cadets, training as a navigator and pilot. Following the war, he entered college on the GI Bill and earned his bachelor of science degree in metallurgy from Grove City College in 1949, and a master of science degree in metallurgical engineering from Ohio State University in 1956. Rae enjoyed a distinguished career as a metallurgist. He worked in mechanical and physical metallurgy at Battelle Memorial Institute from 1950 to 1959 and at General Dynamics Corp. from 1959 to 1962, where he worked on the development of ultrasonic inspection of submarines. He joined the I.B.M. Components Division in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. in 1962, and later became manager of Semiconductor Technology Development in Essex Junction, Vt. Rae received special recognition in 1967 for his research, and has received numerous invention awards and patents for his work on semiconductor device metallurgy. Rae retired from I.B.M. in 1995 to form a partnership with his son, Myron, as founders of Sopher Investment Management in South Burlington, Vt. Throughout his life, Rae was devoted to community service, serving as a school board member and Boy Scout leader in communities where he lived in Ohio, Connecticut and New York and as a deacon of the churches he attended there. In the 1970s Rae served as selectman and planning commissioner for the Town of Shelburne and was also a member of Shelburne/Charlotte Rotary. He was a director of Shelburne Farms from 1990 to 1998 and guided decisions as a director of the Lintilhac Foundation, for more than 20 years. Rae grew up on a small farm near Grove City, where he met his future wife, Jeanette. He loved skiing and the outdoors, enjoyed fishing, hunting, managing woodlands and always taught people to respect, revere and protect nature for future generations. He leaves his loving wife Jeanette, to whom he was married for 65 years; his three children, Joe and Julie Sopher of Bristol Vt., Myron and Lenore Sopher of Shelburne, Vt. and Crea and Philip Lintilhac of Shelburne, Vt.; grandchildren, Melissa and her husband, David Moran, of Bristol, Vt., Matthew and Lauren Sopher of Shelburne, Vt. and Louise, Will and Paul Lintilhac of Shelburne, Vt.; and great-grandchildren, William, Katherine and Caleb Sopher of Bristol, Vt. Guyton Sr., 87, of Millcreek, formerly of Oil City, passed away peacefully at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008, at his home, surrounded by family. Born July 4, 1921, in Oil City, he was the son of the late James and Madeline Karg Guyton. He was a 1939 graduate of Oil City Senior High School. Mr. Guyton entered the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1939. During World War II, he served as an airplane maintenance tech, attaining the rank of staff sergeant. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He was married June 28, 1952, in St. Stephen Church in Oil City to the former Teresa Schnepp. The celebrant of the nuptial was Mr. Guyton's brother, the Rev. James Guyton, C.S.S.R. While in Oil City, Mr. Guyton was employed by Oilwell Supply and Worthington Corp. At that time, he was a member of St. Stephen Church and sang in the male choir for many years. Mr. Guyton and his family moved to Erie in 1970, where he was employed by National Forge, Skinner Engine and Defense Contract Administration Services (DCAS), where he was supervisor of quality control operations. He retired from DCAS in 1987. He was a member of St. Julia's Church in Erie, and he was a life member of the Knights of Columbus in Oil City along with the American Legion, Sportsmen's and Siebenberger clubs in Erie. In his earlier years, John enjoyed traveling, hunting and playing golf. In later life, he enjoyed gardening, crossword puzzles and socializing with his friends at the Sportsmen's Club, where he was an avid pool player. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Teresa; and his children, John Guyton Jr. of Tustin, Calif., Gail G. Feerar of Exton and Michael E. Guyton of Kalamazoo, Mich. He is also survived by two granddaughters, Kelli Feerar and Amy Feerar; his sister in-law, Virginia Dabrowski of Oil City; along with many dear nieces and nephews. He enjoyed photography, especially when using his stereo camera and also enjoyed working around his house and gardening. He was a "do it yourself" type of person with the ability to build, fix or repair anything. He is survived by his wife, the former Dorothy Ann Brown, whom he married on June 16, 1945. He enjoyed woodworking, working in his yard and the company of his grandchildren. He was a truck driver for many years, having worked for various trucking companies. He retired from Gardenscape in Emlenton. He was a United States Navy veteran. He is survived by his wife, Esther L. Eckel Peth, whom he married in Slippery Rock Township on Aug. 11, 1962. Also surviving is a son, Richard A. Peth, at home; a daughter, Tammy L. McGarvey and her husband, Arthur "Buddy", McGarvey of Emlenton; two grandchildren, Dani McGarvey and James "Jimmy" McGarvey of Emlenton. Also surviving are a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was married to Louis Pope of Pittsburgh, former owner of the Mayport clay mines and an accomplished jazz musician who preceded her in death. Sons Louis Pope Jr. and Sean Pope also preceded her in death. Rebecca traveled around Europe and lived in Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Atlanta, as well as cities in Florida. As a young woman, she worked as a model. Later in life, she worked at the Cape Kennedy Space Center for CBS News and was curator for the Mel Fisher Gallery for recovered sea treasures. She was the owner of several bar/restaurant businesses in Florida. Mrs. Pope was a talented artist who painted wildlife and specialized in hunting dog portraiture. She was an animal lover who rescued and adopted many abused dogs. She is survived by a daughter, Sheila Kay Pope of Clarion. He was born June 6, 1925, in Tionesta, a son of the late Harry M. and Katie I. (Blum) Jaun. He is the last surviving member of his family. He graduated from Tionesta School in June 1943. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps that same year during World War II. He served in the 9th Air Force and flew on six B-26 bombing missions over Germany. His tour included England, France, Holland, Belgium and Germany. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Air Metal, E.T.O. Ribbon, Victory Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, and the Presidential Unit Citation. He was honorably discharged in 1946 as a staff sergeant. Mr. Jaun was employed by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation for 30 years as a municipal service specialist, retiring in 1992. He was also employed part time by the Forest Hills Restaurant of Tionesta for 26 years as a maitre'd. He was a life member of the Olive Lodge 557 Masonic organization of Tionesta. An untimely automobile accident brought on her disability and forced her into early retirement. She was of the Protestant Faith. Her hobbies included flower gardening, and she was an avid reader. She was a member of the United Methodist Women, the Lawsonham Street Circle and the Fidelis Sunday school class. She enjoyed reading Agatha Christie mystery novels, swimming, all animals (especially her two house cats, Lady and Cookie), and the crossword and Sudoku puzzles in the daily newspaper. She was married Aug. 15, 1953, in Aliquippa to Donald A. Stemmerich, who survives. Shawn Michael Sferzza, 22, of Madison Street, Sligo, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008, as the result of injuries suffered in a one vehicle auto crash earlier in the day in Clarion County. He was born in Erie, on Jan. 6, 1986, and was the only son of Neva Mae Sferzza of Madison Street, Sligo. He attended the Union Schools and enjoyed playing the guitar and spending time with his friends. He was discharged from the U. S. Army's National Guard in June 2008, after receiving his advanced training at Ft. Benning, Georgia. He was a former employee at the Clarion Wal-Mart. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Neva Mae Sferzza of Madison Street, Sligo; step-father, Randy L. Mr. Feely was born on Aug. 29, 1949, at Oil City, to the late Jack and Dorothy Vogus Feely. He married Karen Winters on Dec. 7, 1987 at Titusville. He was a graduate of Titusville High School, class of 1969. Mr. Feely served in the U.S. Army. He entered the service on Sept. 11, 1969, and served with 502nd Infantry division. He was honorably discharged on Sept. 5, 1971. He was employed as a truck driver for 34 years with Pennsylvania Deptartment of Transportation, until his retirement in 2004. Mr. Feely was a member of the Bruce Shorts Post 5958 VFW. He loved spending time with his grandsons. He also owns two draft horses, which he previously used to skid logs out of the woods. O'Toole, 83, a resident of Tionesta for 57 years and a well-known West Forest High School principal, died Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, at his home in Tionesta. Mr. O'Toole had formerly lived in Homestead. He was born March 12, 1925, in Homestead, a son of the late John E. O'Toole and Mary Catherine O'Brien O'Toole. Mr. O'Toole was a 1943 graduate of Homestead High School and a 1951 graduate of Clarion State Teacher's College. He received his master's degree in education and his high school principal's certificate from the University of Pittsburgh in 1956. He taught in the Forest Area Schools from 1951 to 1957 and was principal of West Forest High School from September 1957 until his retirement in April 1988. In addition to teaching at West Forest, he coached basketball on the junior high and high school levels. He also coached basketball at Clarion Immaculate Conception High School from 1950 to 1952. While he was principal, he was a member of the Pennsylvania Association of Secondary Principals and the National Association of Secondary Principals. He was also a member of the Board of Trustees of Clarion State Teachers College from March 1961 to October 1965. Mr. O'Toole, a veteran of World War II, served in the South Pacific Theatre while in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946 as an electrician mate, second class (EM2/c). He was also a member of VFW Post 8803 of Tidioute. He was an active member of St. Anthony Roman Catholic Church in Tionesta, serving as an usher and as a member of the church finance committee. He was married in Clarion on Aug. 19, 1950, to the former Mary Catherine Schierberl, who survives. In addition to his wife, Mr. O'Toole is survived by six sons, Michael J. Heffernan, 90, of 1220 Chestnut St., Franklin, died at 6:20 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2008, at Sugar Creek Station. A son of Charles Walter and Daisy Mae McMurdy Heffernan, he was born in Franklin on May 4, 1918. He attended Rocky Grove High School. Mr. Heffernan started working at an early age for the Buchanan Funeral Home and Wygant's Grocery Store. He then worked 32 years at the Amalie (Witco) Refinery until it burned in 1970. He held many positions at the refinery, finishing his career as a machinist. He then worked several years at the Franklin Hospital in the purchasing department and retired as a warehouse clerk at GTE in Oil City. Mr. Heffernan was a sports enthusiast and participated in baseball, softball, horse-shoe pitching, bowling and hunting, but his favorite sport was golf. On Oct. 14, 1939, he married the former Alice C. Harrah; she died Dec. 10, 2002. Surviving are a grandson, Mark Berringer, a son-in-law, Paul Berringer; and a sister, Dorothy Gibbons, all of Franklin. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a daughter, Sara "Sally" Berringer on June 25, 2008; and two brothers, Charles and Paul Heffernan. Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Huff Chapel, 312 W. Park St. Private funeral services will be held in the funeral home, conducted by the Rev. Philip Conklin. King, 69, of St. Petersburg, passed away early Wednesday morning, Oct. 1, 2008, at the Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. Born on Jan. 22, 1939, he was the son of Harry James and Hellen Annette Barto King. He married Barbara Lee Timblin King on Feb. 10, 1964. Donald worked for the former Glass Plant in Parker for 18 years. Afterward he was employed for Tom Seigel Strip Mining and later Snyder Associates Strip Mining, where he retired two years ago. He was Protestant by faith. Donald loved attending NASCAR races with his sons and very much enjoyed spending time with his grand children. Surviving are his wife, Barbara Lee Timblin King; three sons, James M. King (Sharon) of Frederick, Md., Donald Eric King and Michael T. King (Marcia) of Hermithee; two sisters, Marsha Fulmer of West Freedom and Donna Kinney of Parker; one brother, William "Bill" King of West Freedom; two granddaughters; one grandson; and a number of nieces and nephews. Born on Dec. 30, 1922, in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of Otto J. and Gertrude M. McCosby Strouse. Mrs. McDowell was a member of St. Michael Roman Catholic Church in Emlenton and the Scrubgrass Senior Center, where she enjoyed the company of her friends and playing bingo. She was a talented and creative homemaker who enjoyed flower gardening. She was an excellent mother and grandmother. She attended St. Michael Roman Catholic Schools in Pittsburgh and moved to the family farm in Kennerdell in 1938 and attended the Rockdale School. Mr. McDowell was married in Winchester, W. Va. on Feb. 27, 1941, to Willliam P. McDowell. He preceded her in death on Jan. 8, 1992. Mrs. McDowell is survived by three children, Eileen R. Gordon and her husband, Howard, of Emlenton, William P. McDowell Jr. and his wife, Debbie, of Coal Center and Kathleen "Kap" Conti and her husband, Joseph, of Emlenton. Four grandchildren survive, William P. McDowell III, Christel McDowell, Jennifer L. Gordon and her fiancé, Thomas Harrington, and Crystal Conti. Also surviving is Mrs. McDowell's longtime friend, Paul Fleming of Grove City. A number of nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.
