Hi JC, I don't have an answer, just a direction you may want to explore. James Stewart, about whom I know nothing except what is contained in his will, was of Goshen. His will was dated May 19, 1817 and proved May 15, 1818. His will does not name a wife, presumably she predeceased him. Children named in his will - John Stewart; Ann wife of John Grangee; Hannah wife of JOSEPH MERCER; Naomi wife of John Bale and Phebe wife of August John. Also named is grandson Riley Stewart. Phebe Stewart was born Sept 25, 1783 and is the last named child in the will, one may presume that she was the youngest, at least of the 4 daughters. This gives a good match on time period for her to possibly be the aunt of your Stewart Mercer, born 1803. Only a few other things that I know. This Joseph Mercer was a descendant of the Quaker immigrant Thomas Mercer and that Joseph was disowned for marrying out. Also, I have seen the name spelled Steward in one source.
