For some years I have been attempting to determine which of the immigrant ancestors my family belongs to. I have a couple of questions perhaps someone can help me straighten out. 1. My ancestor: John Shunk, B. 28 March 1785 in Centre County, PA, supposedly the son of another John Shunk. Wife's name is Hanna. No information about her. Several of their children were baptized at Rebersburg and Aaronsburg Churches. John Shunk died in 1853. He was living with daughter,Elizabeth Kepperling, in Mifflin County when the 1850 census was enumerated. Now -- which of the Shunks are his ancestors. (John) Conrad Shimer's will leaves his entire estate to his six grandchildren and one great grandchild (Charles Guss). The grandcildren listed are: Isaac, Peter, who are to receive shares of the estate before it is divided equally among the others. Baptismal records then show that the children of Simon Shunk and Maria Magdalene Scheimer are: 1. Anna Maria who married Chrles Guss and was deceased prior to the will. 2. Catharina Elizabeth b. 21 march 1744 3. Conrad, b. 26 Oct 1746 married Mary Barker 4. Anna Margaretha b. 2 April 1749 5. Simon b. 6 April 1751 6. Isaac B. 7 Sept 1753 7. Peter b. 20 Feb. 1755 (possibly 1756) 8. Infant b. 23 Jan 1759 died same day which was also the date of the death of Maria Magdalene. At first I believed Anna Maria Guss had predeceased her father and therefore her son Charles Guss, Jr. received an inheritance, however further searching shows that Anna Maria died on 30 April 1821 in Spring City, Chester County so she must have been one of the six to inherit. It now seems we have one too many grandchildren. It is possible that one of the children died prior to 1799 without issue therefore would not have inherited. I have found very little information on the descendants of these grandchildren other than many notes that indicate this family was related to Governor Francis R. Shunk. Especially the Guss descendants. Herein lies the problem. Governor Shunk's father is John Shunk b. 1 May 1757 who married Elizabeth Rawn (Rahn). John's father is given as Francis b. 1714 son of Johannes Capser Shunk who immigranted in 1715 from Mutterstadt Germany. (I believe this reference comes completely from Virkus). Several sources give Francis' wife as Elizabeth Reimer. Some researchers are giving Peter B. 20 Feb 1755(1756) as a sibling of Francis, therefore making the connection and accounting for Peter being the Uncle of Governor Shunk. If this is the case, either Francis cannot be the son of Johannes Casper from Mutterstadt or there were two Peters and the incorrect Peter has been linked. Simon, son in-law of Conrad Shimer is said to have been born ca 1713 at Sankt Wendel, Saarland, Germany (This may be suspect) so if this is true it is unlikely that Simon was a son of Johan Caspar, although the dates do work. Can anyone shed any light on this. Particiculary whether or not new research has disputed the Virkus information. Karen McKellar
