    1. [PACHESTE] Deciphering an 'Old Rights' survey.
    2. Thanks to the recent access to Old Rights land records in Pa. Archives, I sent for and today received three surveys of my Thomas Garrett. I know nothing of where he came from in England or exactly when he arrived in this country, and so look for any clues anywhere.... The first survey mentions 'himselfe & wife' -- which was the first and last reference I ever found of her. I know now she made the journey with him. What I want to know is: according to this Survey, Were they then here in America??? It is dated ''7ber. 9th 1682' -- were they here before this date? And what month is '7ber.' ?? It reads: "Whereas I formerly sold two hundred acres of land unto Henry Reynolds for wch I have recd statisfaction ye said land lying next to George Andrews his land and there was likewise granted unto Tho: Garratt by the Comrs one hundred acres of land for head land for himselfe & wife and all soe ffour Hundred acres of land. I formerly sold unto Hen: Hastings & Richd Buffinton all wch land is yett unsurveyed although seated. Therefore I desire you will order one of yor officers to survey ye said lands for ye above mentioned persons. I am yor loveing ffriend. (signed) Wm Markhams. To Capt Tho. Holme surveyor Generall of Pennsylvania. 7ber. 9th 1682" Any suggestions appreciated. Thank you, Carol Garrett ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com

    3. Hi Carol, I can tell you about the '7ber'.... That would have been September in those days...and would have been the 7th month of the year with the year beginning on March 25th at that time....as the English countries did not officially adopt the Gregorian Calendar (as opposed to the Julian Calendar) until sometime in the early 1700's. Remember both of these calendars would have been Roman instigated and by the 1500's when the Gregorian Calendar was enacted and named for Pope Gregory, the English King Henry VIII would have wanted no part of anything Roman/Catholic. So it took the English speaking world until the early 1700s before they finally switched to the newer calendar as it just got to be too difficult having 2 different calendars for world travelers. So with the year beginning on March 25, April would have been the 2nd month and so on... with Sept = 7 Oct = 8 Nov = 9 and Dec = 10 There would have been NO January or February until we began using the the Gregorian Calendar so that is also why sometimes you'll see people (like George Washington) who were born during the transition period of our adjusting to the new calendar with birth years listed as Feb 22, 1732/33. (Year 1732 (MDCCXXXII) was a leap year starting on Tuesday (link will display the full calendar) of the Gregorian calendar (or a leap year starting on Saturday of the 11-day slower Julian calendar). HOpe this helps some.
