    1. [PACHESTE] More Pierce Trial info Chester Times, Jan 25, 1900

    3. THEORY OF THE AUTHORITIES The theory of the authorities is that the murder was committed soon after they left Chester and that Jim Pierce came back to Chester and went to work at the Consumers' Ice Company without pay for the purpose of establishing an alibi if there was any trouble over the disappearance of Eyre. The finding of the L ___mus boat in the possession of Pierce, or the admission that he had it and was holding it for a reward will not go with the police on account of ironings and trimmings taken..... (obviously this is a misprint in the newspaper for the information following seems to come from two different sentences) Eyre gave all of his old clothing to the blood in the bottom of the boat and the experts say that is was human blood all point in a damaging way to the Pierce boys. There was a heart-rending scene at the door of the old lockup this morning early, when the father of the boys left them. He first spent some time with Amos who was on the second floor with tears in his eyes, a scene that brought tears to the eyes of some of the spectators. He said, "Goodbye, my boy, I will be with you again early in the morning." He then turned his attention to James who was in one of the lower cells and gave him an affectionate farewell. The police were kind and considerate and gave the bed there was in the station to Amos Pierce, who is sick. He will have the best of care while he is in the charge of the city and county. (FOURTH column starts) in this case are that after the hearing Friday, the two Pierces will be held for court without ____ for the murder of George B. Eyre. Joseph H. Hinkson, Esq., who will represent the Pierces will make a strong fight and will want bail. The chances are that if he does not get it he will prepare for a writ of habeous corpus and make an effort to get the court to _________ in the case. BELIEVE THEM INNOCENT The friends of the Pierce boys are firm in their belief that they are innocent of harming a hair on the head of George B. Eyre. They claim that Eyre gave all of his old clothing to the Pierces, he went gunning with them and was said to be worth several dollars a week to the boys alive. They break the line of circumstantial evidence presented by the Commonwealth by claiming that there was no motive for the crime. ___ morning it is said that a woman heavily veiled called at the office of the Chief of Police and from a small satchel she produced a watch which is said to be the one that was torn from the person of George Eyre at the time he was killed and that the part of the chain that was missing from the vest was with the watch. This could not be verified as there was no one who would confirm it. There is also another allegation. It is claimed that Jim has been estranged from his family over a woman in Wilmington and that it was this woman that Pierce and Eyre had a rupture about which resulted in the shooting. This would furnish a motive for the crime and would be the lacking link in the chain of evidence that even the friends of the Pierces would not be able to set aside by their unbelief. The truth or falsity of these charges will come out at the hearing or in the court. It is said still further that Samuel Kees, a driver for the Consumers' Ice Company, said in the presence of a number of witnesses that "If it was not for the fear of losing work in going to the court he could tell some things, not what he heard, but what he saw." He said he had seen something that would be of benefit to the police but that he did not want to get into trouble or get any other person into trouble. This information has been given to District Attorney Smith and he will have full protection of the law and will be paid for his loss of time.
