    2. Helen - For one thing to be accomplished, it will help research a female ancestor who would have changed her name when she married the first time and then again when she married the second time - - - -a researcher may think he is researching two different females? "She" would have been born under one name, married #1 and became a different name, died under still a different name. I don't believe anyone is particularly interested in gory details of a divorce, just names and dates and perhaps name changes? JMHO Dori **************Ideas to please picky eaters. 3. Oh I totally disagree. There were mysteries surrounding my grandfather. I found where he was married to one lady in 1916 but in 1920 he is listed as Widower in the census. There was a 3 year old child listed buried in the same cemetery as he but no wife listed as buried there. There were "other" mysteries surrounding him which are not relevant here but I found a researcher who found this lady with a new marriage to another man a few years later. AH HA, she didn't die, they were divorced. Could this divorce explain the mystery surrounding his relationship with my grandmother. It was all very seedy. So I applied for the divorce papers and OMG.... it got even seedier than I had ever anticipated. HE filed for divorce because of her many infidelities. My grandfather even NAMED the gentlemen involved. He got custody of the child who died shortly after the divorce. There was another child involved whose DOB didn't seem to then match the time periods involved..... AND this child was not named in the custody matter with the other child..... which then tells me this 2nd child's birth was NOT before the divorce date as indicated by the information I had for her. So it pretty much concluded that she was probably a product of one of the affairs and not the child of my grandfather. IS all this gory information relevant? Absolutely. We may not like what we find but if it helps to prove births, deaths, marriages, parents....... it is most definitely relevant. I believe that you can never have enough information when doing genealogy. Because they are no longer here to tell the story. And most times a lot of stories were covered up and people can go on believing forever that someone is of a certain line of descent, but finding proven documents to dispute that can change EVERYTHING. I believed I was of a certain line of descent, only to find out there were not one but TWO illegitimate births in this line. So who do I now belong to? I will probably never find out especially when during this time period births weren't recorded as they are now. Gory details YES, but the information means everything.
