Hi lists, I have been contacted by the above online genealogy data base asking me to subscribe. Does anyone know anything about them? Are they legit.? One time fee of $45.00 to use the site forever. Sounds like one of those "if it sounds too good to be true...."! Thanks, Alan
General rule of thumb, Alan, is to put aside anything that costs money until you first check out the Free Alternatives. :) I take several issues with this site. The most important issue is that it seems someone is trying to charge people for items which are public record and a part of the Public Domain. Theycan be found Free elsewhere. In the US, you can not charge for public records, but you can charge for your time and services which you invest in obtaining those records for someone. For example, the county, state and federal offices can charge you for research time and cost of materials, but they can't charge you for the information on that record. You may have to visit the office to see the records yourself and you may even have to make an appointment, but viewing the information is Free. Remember, this refers to only those items which are a part of the public domain. I suggest going to the records office, an LDS FHC or even buying the disks from Family Tree, the LDS, the government agencies or even a historical society. This organization you are asking about just don't seem right to me. :( ----- Original Message ----- From: "Alan Townsend" <art4dodger@earthlink.net> To: <PACHESTE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, October 06, 2000 4:11 PM Subject: [PACHESTE] Familydiscovery.com > Hi lists, > I have been contacted by the above online genealogy data base asking > me to subscribe.
