Is anyone researching the Coates family in the Chester County area? I have Samuel Lane, born 1755, died bet 1809 and 1814, who is shown in a number of online records as marrying a Phebe Coates. Samuel's will proved in 1814 does not mention a wife at all, so I suspect that Phebe dies before then. Their children listed in the will are Edward, Sarah (married George Chrisman), Mary (married John Buckwalter) and Priscilla (married James Erwin). The Lanes were originally in Providence township in Montgomery county, but many of the descendants of Sarah and George are found in South Coventry township, many of them buried at Coventryville Cemetery. I would love to know who Phebe's parents were so I can tie her in where she belongs! -Mary http://chester-county-genealogy.com

Please forgive if this doesn't fit Chester Co. ---- I'm passing it along without joining too many lists to do so.......... Elizabeth "Betty" Anderson died Sept. 7, 2007, at Expressions of Enumclaw. She was 95. She was born in Altoona, Pa., in 1912 and moved to Enumclaw with her husband Bob in 1961, where they created the Anderson Rhododendron Garden. She graduated from Penn State in 1932 and taught elementary school in New Jersey and then Enumclaw, until she retired in 1977. She was active in the garden club, Businness and Professional Women, PEO and Calvery Presbyterian Church, and served on the city's library board. She is survived by son John Anderson and wife Doreen of Enumclaw; daughter Nancy Carlson and husband Charles of Denver; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert in 1994. A memorial reception and garden walk is planned for 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, at the Anderson Garden. A celebration of her life will take place at Expressions of Enumclaw from 2 to 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14. Memorial gifts may be made to Plateau Outreach Ministries, 1362 Cole St., Emumclaw, WA 98022 or to a charity of the donor's choice. This was found in my local paper, the Enumclaw Herald for the week starting Sept. 12th. Personal note ---- if the Anderson Garden is the one I'm thinking of, it's about 5 acres of Rhody's. I've never seen it -- shame on me --- but hear it's truly beautiful. Hope this finds it's way to someone who can use it -- Terri in WA.
Hi lists, More questions: Does anyone know if the Brandywine Historical Guild still exists? Where is it? Where was it located? What did they do? Did they have anything to do with the reproduction of Civil War furniture? A man, last name of PEARSON, has contacted the Concord Historical Society -- he has a reproduction of the table GRANT used when General LEE surrendered. On the bottom of the table is stamped -- Brandywine Historical Guild & Concordville, PA. PEARSON would like to know some info about the table. Who made it & was he a carpenter in Concordville? Did the Brandywine Historical Guild sell Civil War furniture? What connection do they have to the table? Interesting!! Thank you very much for any help & suggestions you can give us to help solve this mystery. :) Happy hunting, Helen (DCGS) ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com

Hi lists, I received this about a month ago & forgot to post it. Happy hunting, Helen (DCGS) In the last few weeks, the Pennsylvania Archives has added some remarkable free online resources to the already-available Warrant Registers at: http://www.phmc.state.pa.us/bah/dam/landrec.htm "Scanned Land Records" These pages include instructions on how to search the records, and an abbreviated history behind the early process of recording the land transactions. I've been ordering these survey maps from the Archives for seven years for mapping purposes and it is truly a wonderful addition to online research to be able to avoid the cost and time of waiting for search results and photocopies of survey maps, warrants, and patents to arrive by snail mail. In addition, the Archives may, in the near future, accept volunteer help in transcribing the already easy-to-read records so in the future a database can be searched rather than having to review page-by-page hundreds (likely thousands) of pages. Possibly RootsWeb could help the Archives to organize this effort. Specifically the resources are: Warrant Registers Patent Indexes Copied Survey Books Patent Tract Name Index East Side Applications (Register) West Side Applications (Register) New Purchase Register Please pass on! ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com

Hello lists, I am looking for information on my gggrandparents, Garrett Brown Davis, b. 1816, probably in Berks County, PA. He was a metalsmith and his parents were a William and Susan Davis, but that's all I know about them. Garrett married an Elizabeth Keech, 1813-1904, of Chester County, PA, who came from a Quaker family. Garrett and Elizabeth moved to Philadelphia where they had seven children. Some of their middle names suggest possibly family ties: William Davis Charles Buckman Davis Caroline B. Davis Susan Davis Chillian Higgs Davis Joseph Kennard Davis (my ggrandather) Albert Davis I have found census records 1830-60 in Newtown, Bucks county, PA, for a Garret Brown, Charles Buckman and Chillian Higgs. Does anyone have information on those lines and possible marriages with Davises or Keeches? Garret and Elizabeth Davis and family moved to Iowa by 1856, though Garrett moved a few years later to Chicago where he had a second family. Elizabeth died in Iowa. I believe she was not the daughter of Aaron Keech and Rebecca Righter. Any leads or suggestions you might have would be much appreciated. Thanks much. Kathleen Holder

As a child my mother remembers her grandmother talking about going to Quaker church meetings. She wishes now that she'd asked more questions about this. Apparently her grandmother had Quaker roots. I'd, of course, like to figure out where these ties are, but have no idea where to begin. This lady, my great grandmother, was very much a Cecil County, Maryland girl. Born and raised in the town of Elkton as was her father before her. I believe that the Quaker roots must come from her mother's side. She was born in PA and *her* father had ties to Chester County. I know that the Quaker records are supposed to be excellent, but where do I begin? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Melissa F.
