    1. Re: [PACHESTE] DR. FRANCIS GANDOUET, Chester
    2. Hi Jacqueline New Castle County is adjacent to Chester County and Delaware County formed from it), and the arbitary circular boundary was much less important in colonial times, when they were annexed to Pennsylvania, than after Jume 1776, when the three counties of Delaware separated from Britain and became a separate state. We often find wills probated in counties where the decedent owned property, in addition to the county where he resided. However, in the record cited, "Gandowett" is merely administrator of the estate, so not necessarily a resident nor a property owner. Donn Devine, CG, CGL Wilmington, Delaware, USA CG, Certified Genealogist, CGL, and Certified Genealogical Lecturer are service marks of the Board for Certification of Genealogists, used under license by board certificants after periodic evaluation, and the board name is registered in the US Patent & Trademark Office. --------------Original Message-------------- Date: Fri, 5 Oct 2007 15:20:53 EDT From: Jackisr@aol.com Subject: [PACHESTE] DR. 1. Re: [PACHESTE] Deciphering an 'Old Rights' survey.
    2. Lynda Davis-Logan
    3. Hi Carol, I can tell you about the '7ber'.... That would have been September in those days...and would have been the 7th month of the year with the year beginning on March 25th at that time....as the English countries did not officially adopt the Gregorian Calendar (as opposed to the Julian Calendar) until sometime in the early 1700's. Remember both of these calendars would have been Roman instigated and by the 1500's when the Gregorian Calendar was enacted and named for Pope Gregory, the English King Henry VIII would have wanted no part of anything Roman/Catholic. So it took the English speaking world until the early 1700s before they finally switched to the newer calendar as it just got to be too difficult having 2 different calendars for world travelers. So with the year beginning on March 25, April would have been the 2nd month and so on... with Sept = 7 Oct = 8 Nov = 9 and Dec = 10 There would have been NO January or February until we began using the the Gregorian Calendar so that is also why sometimes you'll see people (like George Washington) who were born during the transition period of our adjusting to the new calendar with birth years listed as Feb 22, 1732/33. (Year 1732 (MDCCXXXII) was a leap year starting on Tuesday (link will display the full calendar) of the Gregorian calendar (or a leap year starting on Saturday of the 11-day slower Julian calendar). HOpe this helps some. 2. Thanks to the recent access to Old Rights land records in Pa. Archives, I sent for and today received three surveys of my Thomas Garrett. I know nothing of where he came from in England or exactly when he arrived in this country, and so look for any clues anywhere.... The first survey mentions 'himselfe & wife' -- which was the first and last reference I ever found of her. I know now she made the journey with him. What I want to know is: according to this Survey, Were they then here in America??? It is dated ''7ber. 9th 1682' -- were they here before this date? And what month is '7ber.' ?? It reads: "Whereas I formerly sold two hundred acres of land unto Henry Reynolds for wch I have recd statisfaction ye said land lying next to George Andrews his land and there was likewise granted unto Tho: Garratt by the Comrs one hundred acres of land for head land for himselfe & wife and all soe ffour Hundred acres of land. I formerly sold unto Hen: Hastings & Richd Buffinton all wch land is yett unsurveyed although seated. Therefore I desire you will order one of yor officers to survey ye said lands for ye above mentioned persons. I am yor loveing ffriend. (signed) Wm Markhams. To Capt Tho. 1. [PACHESTE] How to get a cemetery's attention!!
    2. Good morning list,      One way to get attention & info from a cemetery, is to ask who is paying for "the perpetual care," (the up keep) of certain graves.   If the cemetery thinks you might be paying for any future up keep -- they unusually give info.      Ask questions like: 1) My g-grandmother is buried at your cemetery -- is anyone or has      anyone paid for "the perpetual care" of her grave? 2) How much is "the perpetual care" for one grave? 3) Well, how many graves have someone buried in, in that same lot      or plot? 4) I don't think I know all these people -- could you give me their names? 5) Who purchased this gave plot?      I used this ruse twice, when I was doing research on "Jack NICHOLSON" the actor & it worked both times! Specifically, "Which Thomas WOODWARD married Rebecca MILLARD?" Here's what I know. My great great grandfather was Lewis Woodward(b. 1/9/1808 in Berks-d. 4/29/1881 in Berks). He married Hannah KERST on 2/4/1836 at St. Thomas Church in Morgantown, Berks. They are both buried at St. James Lutheran in Geigertown, Berks. His mother was Rebecca MILLARD(b. 10/23/1770-d. 8/15/1849 in W. Nantmeal, Chester). The will of her father, Thomas MILLARD(b. 11/18/1738-d. 5/10/1817 in W. Nantmeal, Chester) names her husband as Thomas WOODWARD. The will was written 12/2/1805, but by the time it was probated on 2/21/1818, Thomas WOODWARD had died(in 1808). Rebecca was buried at St. Mary's Episcopal in Warwick, W. Nantmeal, Chester, (in 1849).. At the left of the row was her father, Thomas MILLARD. To her right were her uncle and aunt, Joseph MILLARD and Hannah Wynne MILLARD, and her cousin Jonathan MILLARD, who also was executor of her will. What I am missing is the burial place of Thomas WOODWARD, and the record of his marriage to Rebecca MILLARD, which would hopefully name his parents. There were several Thomas WOODWARDS in Chester in this time period. I have eliminated all that I know about except for the Thomas b.Abt. 1774 to Richard WOODWARD and wife Martha(?) Clayton. But I have no PROOF. I would appreciate it if you all would examine the Thomas WOODWARDs you know about, and see if you have any clues about which one could, or could NOT, have married Rebecca MILLARD between 1791 and about 1800? Joseph and Hannah Wynne MILLARD moved, about 1787, from Union, Berks, where he was born, to a farm near Elverson, where they were originally buried. There are stones in a burial ground on the farm, as well as the ones at St. Mary's in Warwick, Chester. I feel that there was a close association between Rebecca MILLARD WOODWARD, her father Thomas MILLARD and the family of her uncle and aunt, Joseph and Hannah MILLARD. If Rebecca and her father came about the same time, she would have been married in this area. I am told the names of Thomas and Joseph MILLARD appear in the records of Hopewell Furnace, among many others. There is a reference on the Hopewell Furnace web site to a Bethesda Church on the grounds there. But there is no evidence of where the records of this church might be found. This might have been the church I am seeking, where Rebecca would have attended before St. Mary's Episcopal in Warwick was formed about 1806. Can anyone on these lists tell me more about this Bethesda church and its records? Or any other church in this corner of Berks and Chester that might hold information on these families? On my official PA map, a dime will cover the area of Morgantown, Elverson, Warwick, Hopewell Furnace and Geigertown. What am I missing here? Oh, BTW, there is a Rebecca MILLARD stone at Caernarvon Cemetery in Morgantown, Berks, that says d. 4/19/1827, Age 87y, 7mo. This would have her born in 9/1739, and of the proper age to be the mother of my Rebecca MILLARD WOODWARD, but she is not mentioned in the father's will, though she was still alive. I wonder if they could have been estranged in 1805, and lived in or near Morgantown? I know of no other MILLARDS in Morgantown. Any thoughts on this matter? This got to be rather long, but I thought if I tell you all that I know, I would have a better chance of striking a chord with someone who can help me. I will be grateful for any guidance anyone can provide, especially about the records of Hopewell Furnace and Bethesda Church. 1. [PACHESTE] WOODWARD & MILLARD Brick Wall
    2. Bruce Fosnocht
    3. Hello, I have been working hard to get over my brick wall.
