Hmm...I always thought that the term "yeoman", which I have often found in the land records, meant more of a laborer type of occupation...like that of a yeoman on a ship. If you look in the tax records and find the term "freeman" then yes that means that they owned land. But I haven't found anywhere that Yeoman means a land owner. Sandra - Thanks so much for your work in posting the things you do. You have solved innumerable little family mysteries for me as I am sure you have for other people who were not the original requesters. Keep up the good work. It is enormously appreciated. Hello list, Does anyone know of an online ships list for the years 1710-1724. I know these years are prior to the 1727 Oaths of Allegiance. Hoping there may be lists for these earlier years, looking for Johannes Grebiel who probably immigrated around 1717-1726 to PA near Manheim Twp. along the Conestoga creek. I've checked the PAChester website but those ships are from the 1680s Thank you Marty Graybill ================================================= http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/g/r/a/Marty-Graybill/index.html ================================================= "Sometimes I eat the bear, sometimes it eats me" =================================================

Hi One & All, I can't remember who I have or haven't sent this to but it may be of help to anyone doing genealogy research--I wrote it for the Genealogy Workshops that I teach: Session #4 All about the Federal Census 1790-1920 1790 CENSUS Name of Head of household # males over 16 # males under 16 # females # slaves 1800 & 1810 CENSUS Name of Head of household # males under 10 females (the same) # males 10-16 # males 16-26 # males 26-45 # males over 45 # slaves * all free persons, except Indians 1810 indicates alien 1820 CENSUS (same as 1800 & 1810 Census except *) * # males 16-18 (military) foreigners not naturalized free colored & slaves 1830-1840 CENSUS Name of Head of household # males under 5 # males 50-60 # males 5-10 # males 60-70 etc. # males 10-15 # slaves # males 15-20 # free colored # males 20-30 # males 30-40 females (the same) # males 40-50 1850 CENSUS STATE or TERRITORY Names of all living in the household Ages Sex Occupation/School Place of birth 1860 CENSUS (same as 1850 CENSUS except *) * $ amount of Real Estate & Personal Property 1870 CENSUS (same as 1860 CENSUS except *) * W-White, B-Black, or M-Mulatto If person Votes Indicates if parent is foreign born 1880 CENSUS (same as 1870 CENSUS except *) * Relationship to Head of household Married or Single Where father was born Where mother was born Street address is given 1890 CENSUS Lost in a fire! Came out---1 March 1992. Census Indexes: 1. There are books with indexes for the 1790 Census to about 1860 or 1870 Census. 2. The WPA War Project did the census indexing. There are mistakes! Soundex: A coding System for Social Security---keeps together names of the same & similar sounds but of variant spellings. ex: WEBBER or WEAVER---W160 MANNER or MEHNER---M560 Soundexing: 1880 Census--only families w/ children 10 or 12 yrs of age & younger 1900 & 1920 Census---everyone is Soundex 1910---only 21 states are Soundex 1. Okla. 20. VA 3. The 1930 Census will not have a Soundex for all states --comes out ever 72 yrs. April of 2002 Locations: 1. Mid-Atlantic National Archives in Philadelphia--all state census. 2. Local Historical or Genealogical Societies--county census, that area. note: The DCHS does have census index books for Delaware County from 1790-1870 Census. 3. Mormon Library or local Libraries--county census, that area. STATE CENSUS About 42 States have State Census---not PA, (see book) COUNTY CENSUS There maybe a county census for the county you are researching. ex: Chester Co., PA had an 1857 Census Do You Know: 1. Do you know if a person could be index or listed in two different states in the same census year? Ex: Edward WEBBER in the 1900 census, was in Caroline Co., MD & Dela. Co., PA. He had left the farm & came to Chester to work. ex: Hitch was indexed in the DE Census but was living in MD Census ex: Waitstill WEBBER indexed in Cumberland Co., VA but was living in Cumberland Co., Maine! 2. The 1810 Census includes an inventory of the yard goods per household? The inventory is broken down into 3 categories, showing the yardage for each. 3. The 1920 Census--the weather was very bad. The census takers did not do a good job in getting to everyone & collecting all the info. The idea was all the farmers would be home. If born between Jan 1st & the 15th, the child was not included in the census. If a person died between Jan 1st & 15th, they would be listed as alive. 4. In 1900 there were other Census Schedules taken: Agriculture, Manufactures, Mortality, Crime. (note) These are not available at the National Archives 5. In the 1880 &/or 1900 Census they took an Idiot Schedules ex: John TUTTLE (idiot) 6. Be cautious, if all the children have the same surname but are not listed from the eldest to the youngest in age. Ex: Harry 9 Susan 6 James 12 (these maybe children of a deceased brother, uncle, Maria 8 cousin, etc.). By Helen M. Imburgia aka/ Happy hunting, Helen
Hello, you wonderful list people. I need your help. I recently lost my hard drive, and along with it, my inbox, which contained will information on my Chester County Thompsons and Maxwells. Could someone who has the Pennsylvania Wills CD (Sandra comes to mind) please send me wills for the following people: Elizabeth Thompson, widow of John, West Nantmeal Township Catherine Thompson, daughter of Elizabeth, also West Nantmeal Archibald Thompson, died 1799, wife Isabella, West Nantmeal John Maxwell, died 1781, Tredyffrin, daughter Isabella Thompson mentioned The names below also are on my line, and if there is any information on them I would love to have it: John Bowsman Smith (husband of Mary Anna or Anna Maria Ross Thompson, married 1806) David Milligan, husband of Jane Thompson, married before 1800 Anyone with the last name Ross who is connected with Smiths or Thompsons in any way. I really appreciate this. I have learned my lesson and plan to PRINT these things on PAPER as soon as I get them. My ancestor Peter Dix (Dicks) (1654-1704) and his wife Esther Maddock (1662-1709) arrived in Pennsylvania in 1684. He had 25o acres of land on Crum Creek, two miles above Chester PA, purchased originally from William Penn by James Dix of Chester England in 1681. I would very much like to find more information about Peter as well as James. By way of information: My full name is John A. Dick. I prefer being called Jack. I come from Michigan but now live in Belgium where I am a university professor. My email address: jad@chello.be Thank you for your attention to my note.
Sandra, Do you know anything about Deborah CLARK who supposedly married Nathan DIX, Peter's son? I have been looking for some info on her so that I can possibly tie her to Jonathan CLARK. Jonathan left some belongings in the custody of Nathan DIX and Nathan was the Administrator after Jonathan died intestate in 1726. I'm working on a CLARK line in Union Co. SC (Quakers) and think this Jonathan was their father. I would like to identify other siblings. Thanks, Sandy
Sandra, I am glad I was sitting down when I read your post, that included "Pennsylvania Wills, 1682-1834 Bucks Co Page 14. John Worthington of Parish of Cheadle in Old England on Ship Friendship of Liverpool. " I am really interested in this information. Do you have other Worthington information in that book? What is really interesting, your short response hit a number of places in my family files. Birmingham Meeting, Darlington, etc. Not to mention Worthington. I am aware of a Worthington line that is in Buck County, specifically in Byberry. I'll have to see if I can find this book. Thank you, -- _____________________________________________ Russ Mailto:rworthington@worldnet.att.net
I am DESPERATELY seeking information on this couple: George Adams married Katherine Dixon on Mar. 15, 1727 in Philadelphia at the First Presbyterian Church. I can't find them again until 1741 when he is granted land in Caernavon Twsp in Lancaster Co. In 1747 he wrote his will (Lancaster), in 1748 made a donation to his Presb. Church, and died about 1751. They were the parents of 4 children: Ann, Sarah, Jane and William (who married Susannah Martin, dau of Moses Martin and Margaret Battin). This is the END of my knowledge. Can anyone PLEASE help me find anything further? I would really appreciate the help. Thanks Willie Krug

Peter Dicks, of the city of Chester, England, flaxdresser, purchased 250 acrs of land in PA August 16, 1684, from James Dicks, who had bought the land from William Penn in 1681. Peter, with his wife Esther, arrived about 1686 and settled in Birmingham, where hedied in 1704. In 1708 his widow married John Mendehall. The children of Peter were Hannah, m to Jonathan Thatcher; Elizabeth, m. to Richard Tranter 10-2-1714; Sarah m to Joseph Pyle 4-`6-1715; Esther m to Francis Swayne. 1724; Deborah m to Jonathan fincher 1726; N athan; and Peter who married in 1716 Sarah, widow of Joseph Powell, Jr, and daughter of Joseph Hayes of Cheshire England. (which child do you descend from.....perhaps I can find more on that one) There were many iron-works in chester, and tghis is a quote in the History of New Sweden, written in 1759; "curm Creek belongs to Peter Dicks; has 2 stacks, is worked sluggishly and has ruined the Crosby famioly." (my family was the Crosby family, so I eexpect an apology from you!!!!) from F & C; "The works of Peter Dicks were estalished as early as 1742, by John Crlsby and Peter Dicks whose dam on crum Creek koverflowed Thomas Dell's land and caused the latter to complain to chester MM, 8th MO, 25th of that year." Peter Dicks is listed as a land-holder in 1689...he had 250 acres at Brandywine Creek. Below are some wills that contain the name of Peter Dicks...perhaps you will find some of interest.....
