There are certain databases that are free; but the majority are part of the subscription services. I am a subscriber to Ancestry.com and will gladly perform searches for others who request it. I have found the service to be worth it's cost (about $55 year). Found this on one of my other mailing lists: Ruesch International In the USA there is a much more economical source for foreign draft Money orders. Try --- International Currency Express, 427 N Camden Drive, Beverly hills, CA 90210 1-888-278-6628 Main office Washington, D C 1-888-842-0880 This company accepts Credit - Cards Visa or Master Card charges only $5 US fee for any country currency and any amount, and are fast and very obliging. I am not affiliated with this company, but as a retiree it has saved me a few "bucks". Best wishes to all fellow researchers. Was it *this* list that someone recently asked about the prices for a foreign draft from Ruesch International? If so, I phoned them today. Their price has indeed risen to $15.00 per draft ($30 to have the draft wired). They still provide the service to individuals (rumor was they have restricted their service to companies .... not so).
Would it be possible for someone to look up the will of DAVID TITLOW, of North Coventry, Chester County? His will #9531 is dated 10 April 1837 and prorated May 1837. Thank you very much! Ray
For those of you who are starting to follow your immigrant ancestors back to England you should find the following map site a big help. http://uk8.multimap.com/map/places.cgi And if you hope to plan a trip to England as a genealogy search and vacation you can type in a place name, up will pop a map of the area, and below the map will be a list of hotel accomodations, etc. You can click on one of the hotels and up will pop its information, room rates, etc. AND an option to check current currency conversion rates! For instance: I clicked on one hotel listed in Ilford, the room rate was 30 pounds single, 40 pounds double. So I checked to see what 30 pounds single converted to US $ was at today's rate: $44.95 Judy in MI
Sandra, you are a peach! Thanks for all of the help you've given me over the past couple of months ...!! Anne Laukka
The American Legion Posts &/or family members can get these flag markers & flags from the Veteran's Affairs Office & place them on the Veteran's graves. They are the one who places a new flag in the flag holder on Memorial Day. This is being very difficult-- American Legions are closing & there are fewer Vet's. If you think someone else, that you do not know, maybe visiting your relatives grave, leave a note in a ziplock plastic bag taped to the gravestone--YOU just may find someone else doing research on your family!! :) There are index cards at the VA Office--I have used these files many times over the years. From the dates on these cards, for the Revolutionary War to the Spanish-American War, it appears there were cemetery surveys done in the 1930s on Veteran's graves. I have found mistakes & incorrect info on some of the index cards --but I'm sure you know gravestones can be very hard to read! At any given time these makers may be moved, when cutting grass, people trying to be funny, stolen, etc. I had a woman contact me last week, while doing genealogy research she found a marker on her forefather's grave but does not believe he served in the Civil War-- this is not uncommon it happens all the time. My husband died in 1960, at the age of 23 & I have replaced his marker more than 5 times over the years & I probably could have replaced it even more times then that! Where did his marker disappear all these times? I just ordered close to 80 of these markers for the graves of the Veteran's from the Revolutionary War, The War of 1812, The Mexican War, The Civil War & The Spanish-American War that are buried at St. Martin's Cemetery in Marcus Hook, PA. A large order of this nature has to be placed in January, that is then the VA Office places there yearly order. Happy hunting, Helen

Thanks, Sandra (again!) - I have that book & found the same, but can't find the middle 100 years or so between the two. I know you're a wealth of info - where can I look for the 1803 birth of Cadwallader Foulke or his marriage, to see who his parents were? Thanks - again! Anne Laukka
Hi list, the following site has some great info on early school houses. Also, the site on Derry, Westmoreland, Co. shows mining sites & pictures of coal mines. Enjoy. Jean Platt Click here: One-Room Schoolhouses in 50 States
this is from Futhey and Cope..pg 551; "I, Edward " Foulke, was the son of Foulke Thomas, the son of Evan, the son of Robert, the son of David Lloyd, the son of Madock, the son of Jerworth, the son of Madock the son of Ririd blaidd of the Poole, who was Lord of Penllyn, one of the northern divisions of Wales. My mother's name was Lowry, the daughter of Edward the son of David, the son of Ellis, the son of Robert, of the Parish of Llanvor of Merionethshire. I was born on the 13th day of the 5th mo, 1651, and when arrived to mature age, I married Eleanor, the daughter of Hugh, the son of Cadwallader, the son of Rees of the parish of Spyter, in derbyshire. ..... This account is by Edward, aged 85 years, and buried at Gwynedd, in 1741....there's more ....send me a SASE and I'll copy it all for you. I remember looking Francis up for you, Judy, but the original email is long gone,,,,,,,,I find a listing for Francis Smith, as one of the first to take up land (this is in Pennsbury), formed from the eastern part of Kennet, and made of the earliest settled part of the township..[.pg. 200 F & C]....this is probably the same Francis who, in 1686, took up 200 acres of land at the mouth of Pocopson Creek, within the original limits of Kennet[this is mentioned in both F & C and the Immigration of the Irish Quakers into PA]...He came from Devizes, in Wiltshire...the land was surveyed in 1686. there is another mention of a Francis Smith, as a landholder in 1689, with 300 acres. I can't find any other description of a Francis Smith, other than the bit about being from Devizes, etc. Sandra -----Original Message----- From: Judy Ardine <downeast@tir.com> To: PACHESTE-L@rootsweb.com <PACHESTE-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Friday, August 11, 2000 8:47 PM Subject: [PACHESTE] PENN Leases and Releases >Quite some time ago now SOMEONE sent me an e-mail with a reference that >listed TWO Francis SMITHs as purchasing land from Wm PENN on 8-9 Sep 1681. >One was identified as having purchased 500 acres and one was identified as >purchasing 5000 acres. There are few Swain/Swains/Swans listed in the index of Futhey and Cope, but I noticed a ton of Swaynes, the earliest being Francis Swayne, who died in 1693, Ockingham, England, and seems to have been the progenitor of the Chester Swaynes......Have you thought of looking for Peter among the Swaynes, rather than the other spellings? I didn't see him in the index, but it is a really big family that seems to have intermarried with lots of common Chester families; Woodward, Cope, Pennocks, Thomases, Wichershams, Bailys, Yarnalls, etc. Sandra -----Original Message----- From: Cheryl Taney-Sandstrom <tansands@voicenet.com> To: PACHESTE-L@rootsweb.com <PACHESTE-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Friday, August 11, 2000 2:47 PM Subject: Re: [PACHESTE] Swan/Swain/Swaine > >Hi fellow listers, >There had previously been discussions regarding settlers within Coventry >Township, Chester County. > >Is there anyone out there researching the Swan/Swain/Swaine family who once >resided there. > >Looking for a Peter Swan who walked this earth in the late 1700's. >1760-1787? >Possibly married an Elizabeth or Marie Elizabeth? > >If you have a connection, please contact me. > >Cheryl > > > >==== PACHESTE Mailing List ==== >Stop by our associated website for Chester County Genealogy at >http://www.rootsweb.com/~pacheste/chester.htm > > > > >
Hi fellow listers, There had previously been discussions regarding settlers within Coventry Township, Chester County. Is there anyone out there researching the Swan/Swain/Swaine family who once resided there. Looking for a Peter Swan who walked this earth in the late 1700's. 1760-1787? Possibly married an Elizabeth or Marie Elizabeth? If you have a connection, please contact me. Cheryl
