    1. [PACHESTE] correct subject in the subject slot.
    2. Sandra Ferguson
    3. This archiving also brings up the importance of putting the correct subject of the posting in the subject slot, rather that carrying one over again and again, or using those silly things like roll call, or genealogy. Once you visit the archives you'll instantly discover the importance of this, for without the actual subject being in the slot, you can't tell what the posting is about without clicking on it, waiting for it to load, and then reading it....just to see if it might be of interest. Whereas, if it says Joe Blow 1910 is the subject, then you instantly know if it is of interest or not, and can either choose to read it, or not.......but at least you know, up front, what it concerns. It saves a ton of time.......I'm as guilty as the next guy of forgetting to chance subjects each time, but is really is important to try to do it....visit the archives and see what I mean. You'll give up disgusted and frustrated in no time flat!

    3. Hi Guys, I think it is a good idea for Sandra or any other researcher/volunteer to post all answers to queries publicly to this board, assuming there is no invasion of privacy. It's my understanding that this list is archived somewhere, and perhaps a month or a year from now someone may access and search the archives, only to discover that they already have a cousin who was on the Chester board earlier asking the same questions. Every day someone new to on-line genealogy shows up doing searches for their surnames... It's only been in recent times that the light bulb for this has clicked on in my skull. I felt I would clog up a list if I posted a question about an ancestor when only one other person might have had a remote knowledge of them. However, I now understand that in the future someone may search the archives and will connect to me, and that's really the point, isn't it? 3. will of Betty Baily, dau of Joel and Ann Short Baily, per request. Someone has emailed me, asking why I post emails that came to me, personally. The answer is that I do too many of these lookups to try to Taylor and alter and edit things, before searching for answers and them sending them on. I always feel that it's a terrible waste of information to send it to just one person, and many times folks benefit from the answers to the questions asked by others..... So, if you don't want to see your question and my answer posted, for some reason, please let me know..... The Cope book says "The will of Betty Baily was dated 12 MO 8, 1775, but not proved until July 24, 1785. to grandson John Webster 5 shillings; to granddaughter Hannah Hayes 3 LB; to 4 daughters, Betty Swayne, Ann Hayes, Mary Mendenhall and Phebe Mendenhall my wearing apparel; to sons Joel, Isaac and Joshua 1/20th of my estate between them, and the remainder equally between my 4 daughters. sons Joel and Joshua to be executors." --

    3. Bruce, If you live near an LDS Family History Center, you can order the film ( I think it is $3.50 per film to order) that has the Burials at Brownbacks Reformed Church. The film # is 1294884. The people that transcribed this cemetery even listed the rows that the people are buried. I found it quite useful. I have some relatives that married into the Brownback family. Sebastian Root's daughter, Margaret, married Edward Brownback. I believe the Chrisman family married into the Brownback line as well. I have found the Genealogies of the Brumbach family to be very useful as well. I have not done much research on the Brownback line since it is a "cousin line". But I know there is some good information available on this family. Good luck to you. 1. [PACHESTE] Newspapers available during mid to late 1800's
    2. Chris Lehr
    3. I'm wondering what newspapers were available during the mid to late 1800's in the Chester Co. area. I know that the Village Record was around. Were there any other papers that would have been used to announce deaths, etc.? I'm specifically looking to find if there was an obituary of sorts for George Chrisman Sr. of Coventry (I think South Coventry by the time he died). He was a very wealthy iron master who died about 1864. Any help is greatly appreciated. Chris Lehr

    3. There isn't much on Betty...you probably have it all, but just in case not; Betty b. 1 MO 8,1727-8 n West Marlborough d. 11 MO 19, 1789 in Kennet.m. Francis Swayne of East Marlborough, b. 12 MO 18, 1722 d. Kennet 3 MO 23 1791 son of Wm and Elizabeth Dell Swayne. they first declared their intentions of marriage at New Garden MM 1 MO 26 1748. About 1761, Francis appears to have removed from E. Marlborough to Kennet Twp, and in 1764 he was assessed in the latter with 164 acres of land, 4 horses ,4 cattle and 13 sheep; but is is likely the young stock were omitted. He and wife were active members of Kennet Meeting, and were buried there. 2. Sandra Ferguson
    3. I just got back my book DESCENDANTS OF JOEL BAILY, by Cope. He lists the Wiltshire Friends records, all those mentioning Bailys, and the Records of Bromhan Parish....the earliest Balyly marriage listed was for William Bayly, of Catcomb, 2 MO 3, 1671, to Susannah Skeate of Foxham. The earliest death is of a William Baily, 9 MO 25, 1675, of Catcombe, carpenter. The earliest birth, as listed in the parish records of Bromhan, Wiltshire, is 1605, Oct 6; Joel, the sonne of Thomas Bayly and of Ann his wife Buryed. Our Joel Baily was baptized in 1658, Jan 29; Joel Baylie sonne of Daniell Baylie. It also lists the baptism 1567, March 7th ; Thomas Bayly, the son of Willm. Bayly...there is no record of any marriage of Willm. Bayly, and later, Cope simply lists the first generation as William...no wife mentioned at al.....so unknown it is! I can't remember the original question....something about who had what children. If you're interested in any particular one, let me know.......there's sure to be more....This is what Cope lists for the various folks; children of Thomas and Anne Bayly; Anne..bapt ..12-23-1598 Daniel bap 3-14-1601 Joel (perhaps twin of Daniel, being baptized on the same date) Thomas Bayly bapt 9-14-1603 Rebecca bapt. 3-2-1605 children by 2nd wife Jane; John pap 2-22-1606 buried 3-7-1606 John bap 3-29-1608 (perhaps the same John Bayly of Bromham, whose will proved in 1675) Children of Daniel and Mary Bayly of Westbrook; Thomas. Daniel.. broadweaver of Westbrook, died 1732, bought land in pa but remained in England Mary...mentioned in her father's will Dorothy....ditto Ann bapt 1-3-1654 died young Josias..bap 2-15-1656 died young or unmarried Joel...bap. 1-29-1658 Ann bap 11-30-1662 married ? Blake Isaac Bayly, bap. 6-14-1666 died 1727, leaving widow Jane and children Daniel, Ann (hunt), E;Elizabeth (Moore), Joel, John, Mary and Isaac children of Joel and Ann Short Baily; Mary Ann Daniel Isaac Joel Thomas John Josiah There is, of course, more on all of the above....if I could just remember what children were those in question!! S. An interesting aside I found, while looking through the book...A fella born in West Nottingham in 1717, was writing of his mother, who, when 12 to 14 years old, was forcibly taken, along with many others, carried on board a ship, and brought to Pa. She was then sold to Caleb Pusey, near Chester, and served him for 5 years, before then marring William Cole. Can you imagine?.....and what of the poor mother, who probably never knew what happened to her daughter...... -----Original Message----- To: Sandra Ferguson <ferg@intelos.net> Date: Friday, August 25, 2000 2:32 AM Subject: Re: William Baily >What do you think? George and Mary SAVAGE died there in 1884-7's and son Zenas returned to Chester Co, where he lived in Fricks Locks, E Coventry, Chester Co and died in 1913. Is anyone familiar with any of the MARCH girls? I have been trying to find the parents of each of them. I do not know if they were related. Zenas and Rebecca MARCH SAVAGE were my gr3grandparents. George SAVAGE was a brother of Zenas and also had a son Zenas. I cannot find any info about a MARCH family in Northumberland, where Rebecca was supposedly born. There is a Jacob MARCH who died intestate there but I have not yet gotten any papers from the court there for him and don't know if he is related. I know there were MARCH male members who were partners in the National Stove Works in Limerick Station in the mid 1850's in Mtgy Co. One of the partners was first a Michael MARCH in 1848 and then a Henry C MARCH in 1855. Then a Franklin MARCH joined as a partner in 1866. Does anyone know if they connect with Rebecca or Mary MARCH? 1. [PACHESTE] BROWNBACK, FUNK & KEELEY
    2. Sandra Ferguson
    3. "Garret Brownback, or Gerhard Burmbach, as it may have been in Germany, was one of the earliest settlers of that nationality in Vincent; was the founder of Brownback's Reform Church, and the fiest tavern keeper in that part of the county. He took up 1000 acres of land, partly in Vincent and artly in coventry, on part of which the church was built at a later date. He had 2 son's benjamin and ahenry, and daughters who became the wives of Richard Custarad, John Benner, Frederick Bingamen, John Munshower, and William Posey. Garret died about 1758, and was succeeded at th4e tavern by his son Benjamin, who continued in the business nearly 30 years. The latter served during the Revolution. His widow was robbed and murdered, and the murderer never discovered. " It's a cinch that if you have Brownbacks in your family, they descend from these folks. Brownback's Church was established in 1743, or at least that is the earliest record known.. The only Showalters I find were Mennonites, membersd of the church in Phoenixville, the church erected in 1772. Several Showalters were ministers of this congregation; Daniel and John. The Keeley family originated from Germany, and first settled in what is now Montgomery County, and then in Chester. conrad keeley, son of the imigrant, married Margaret Laugbaugh. There is listed, in THE HISTORY OF CHESTER COUNTY, a little bio of Daniel Keeley, b. 1824, grandson of the above Conrad, and son of John. do you ave any given names for the Keeleys, for there are quite a few in the index. 3. Believe it or not, I actually have some records on St. James Episcopal, in Lancaster, and found that marriage record on David and Mary. St. James was organized in 1744, and these records of marriages, baptisms and christenings start in 1755 and continue through 1796. I don't know whether there are any earlier ones in existence. You'd think it they were around, the folks who made the CD would have used all the records, rather than leaving off the earliest ones. Anyway, the only time the name Poston appears in any of the records, is the marriage of David and Mary. I thank you for all your efforts in trying to help others. Having been a lookup volunteer, I know this takes a lot of your personal time. In the year plus I've been on this list, I have yet to see the surname mentioned I am working. I know you like to have some dates, etc with requests. I am researching the COUNSELLOR (and variant spellings, there are several) families of DE, PA and NJ, 1690's-1850's William COUNSELLOR is listed: in Chester Co, Thornbury in 1820 in Delaware co, Thornbury in 1830 in Delware co, Thornbury in 1840 not found in 1850 in Delaware co, Thornbury in 1860 in 1860 his age is listed as 91 years. He was poor, poor people don't leave probate or land records, in addition, he is of color. Anything with this surname I would be interested in. Thanks for your efforts Chuck Counceller Connersville, IN
