    3. Interesting comment on little girl sold (seld indenture for x number of years) to Caleb Pusey. My Alexander Ross was stolen off the streets of either Scotland or Northern Ireland and was indentured to Caleb Pusey at age of 12. Alexander Ross became a man of great wealth. He moved from Chester Co with a whole group of Quakers to found Hopewell Meeting in VA. 2. Good morning, Thank you so much for this fabulous list, here is a little more info on the GAR & one that is not on the list SSMA. Yesterday, while volunteering at the DCHS in Broomall, PA, they asked me to identify a SSMA marker that has Marcus Hook (across the top), a number 12 (in the center), & SSMA (at the bottom) of the marker. SSMA stands for: S.S.M.A.--Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Association G.A.R.--Grand Army of the Republic: A society founded 1866 of Civil War veterans who served in the Union Forces. Happy hunting, Helen (DCGS)

    1. RE: [PACHESTE] funeral at train station
    2. Sharon Sheldon
    3. John, Perhaps your ancestor had many friends in Lancaster who wished to pay him a fond farewell, hence the service at the train station...it would have saved them the trip to Oxford. Regarding the use of the train station, I have something that's not completely different: "Upon his death in 1882 after a long illness, his remains were carried by a special W&N Railroad train to the Geigertown siding, where he was buried at St. Paul's Cemetery..." Of course in the above account it's not really clear if there was an actual viewing or funeral in the train car. From what I know, at this point in time (at least in Western PA) tradition was to hold the viewing at the family home of the deceased (a practice in one line of my family up through the 1960's!). Perhaps no one in Lancaster could host the coffin, hence the service at the station? Of course this is just my theory; perhaps someone with historical knowledge can shed some facts on this type of situation? Hello All, According to Microsoft Streets & Trips, the area known as "Freemont" is near Fremont Rd. & Leesbridge Road in West Nottingham, Chester Co., PA Believe me, I'm not affiliated with Microsoft products but have to admit this mapping program is slick to use and very handy to have. After rebate it cost us $10! My large Atlas & Gazeteer of PA hardly comes out of the file drawer these days... Sharon

    1. [PACHESTE] PA Birth & Death Certificates!
    2. Hi Ian, Here is an update on some incorrect info that was sent to you! << Ian: Before you go to all this trouble, it isn't clear why you need someone to look this stuff up for you? In what time period are these marriages and deaths? If before 1885, then yup, you need lookups. And you might find the information that way. [ If since 1890 something, you get the info by writing to Vital Records at New Castle, Pennsylvania (not Delaware). ] >> MY REPLY: The above info is not correct! You cannot get birth & death certificates from the State of PA until 1906. In Delaware Co. you can get marriage records from the Delaware County Court House & some birth & death info, too. Please read the following: Register of Wills: Births 1893-1906 Deaths 1893-1906 Marriages 1885-present To find out about the Vital Records for PA go to: <A HREF="http://vitalrec.com/pacounties1.html">PA Vital Records Counties Info< /A> http://vitalrec.com/pacounties1.html <A HREF="http://vitalrec.com/pa.html">PA Vital Records Info</A> http://vitalrec.com/pa.html <<This is not I don't know the address off hand, but someone will chip it in. 3. Freemont, PA is located South of Nottingham, near where Route #1 crosses the Pennsylvania border. Nottingham Park is located on the West side of Route #1. Freemont is located on the West entrance road to Nottingham Park. This information comes from the Microsoft Trip Planner. I have found it valuable in locating small places. Claude Nivens

    3. As many others of you, I have watched the list manager allow two somewhat troubled people ruin what was once a great list. I have continued doing lookups , sending the results to only the person who queried, for I certainly do not feel comfortable sharing things with the list in general, for reasons you are all painfully aware of. But, I kept thinking what a waste of good data, that could perhaps benefit so many. So, I am starting a new list, to be called the PA-OLD-CHESTER, and you will subscribe the same way you do to all the others. The interest of the list will be the ORIGINAL Chester County, and take in all lands encompassed in Penn's original Chester co. I also plan to be a list adm. who takes a positive roll in the list, and adds to the general knowledge of the list members, not just as an occasional disciplinarian.........the list is not quite up and running yet, and I hadn't planned to tell you all about it quite yet, but after Anne's post this AM I am afraid that many will drop out before I get a chance to let them know that there is soon to be an alternative to this nuttiness. So, please check periodically for us to get going, and join us when we once more get back to some "fun" genealogy.......just remember, the sign in the window says "N complainers or kooks need apply." 3. I've been reading the discussions tonight about "Blue Pig" and "Fremont" Pennsylvania. I've check my 1797 and 1853 Gazetteer and neither appear. Now what I've about to write is a wild, crazy hunch . . . and I have no idea where it came from. Just a thought . . . Could "Blue Pig" be the name of an old tavern or inn at some tiny little town or crossroads on a well-traveled road? Blue Pig sounds more like a name plate you'd see hanging on a tavern or inn and could very easily have been used to refer to a long-gone crossroads or village. The original post gave no time period, just his ggg-grandmother so I've no idea on that other than my 3rd gr-grandparents were born in the 1780's. If that's true, the tavern or inn could be a possibility. Remember . . . this is just a wild idea! Were/Are there any books on old taverns or inns in Chester County?
