    3. Thank you very much. There is so much I am just starting to learn. I will certainly follow up and look at the information you pointed me to. I am really hopeful that I will find a marriage record somewhere....you never can tell. Right now, I am guessing that the marriage occurred in the first half of the 1700s. Thanks again for your suggestions, Regards, Suzanne

    3. I am researching my ancestry and enjoying it quite a bit!!! I am hoping to find further information on a Jonathan Golding. He may perhaps be my GrGrGrGrandfather. According to ancestry.com the informationI read said: Golding, Jonathan, Chester, E. Nottingham Township, 1830 Fed. Pop., Page 266. I am hoping someone may be able to give me further information on him. Hopefully who his wife was and also his children. If one of his childrens' names was Jane Elizabeth, then I am definitely on the right track. That would be perfect since we are about to enter the Thanksgiving Holiday and I am most grateful to everyone who has helped me, even in the smallest way!! Looking forward to hearing from someone SOON. Thank you in advance and have a nice Thanksgiving. Carolyn Showers dreamer549@prodigy.net

PA. > Hello Listers, I'm beginning to regret having left town for the three day weekend we just recently had. Not only was I bombarded by many helpful posts to the list, I collectively received a lot of them! Seems as though there was some information regarding the 1790 census and slaves posted to the list. What an interesting topic. One I struggled to understand several years past until I befriended an individual who is on the board of the Amity Heritage Genealogical Society. It wasn't until this person explained the circumstances of those tick marks under the slave column that I finally came to some rational understanding of people who would come and go within a tax list. Yes, there is that possibility that those who skip the tax sheets from time to time may have very well been serving some sort of indenture or sorts. But then there are the others who simply lived on the land of a relative or sorts who were referred to as a tenant. It is those people who have little representation (Or should I say, no representation) on the 1790 census. You see, I'm told that in many counties within the eastern side of Pennsylvania the census takers were uncertain as to where to list these people. So in many cases, a tenant to the land was simply noted as a tick mark under the slave category. So now, hundreds of year later, we are left to interrupt it all. Not all notations to slaves were for the African-America immigrants but some were for those indentured and tenants too. As a small child, being dragged along side my mother, to the Archives in Washington DC I met a man who told me, "If we were to take all that we know of history through all the books that we have, we would only know a small portion equal to the head of a pin as much is left for interruption." You know...........I begining to understand that guy some 30 years later! Well then again, maybe 40 years............ I'll allow you to interrupt. Cheryl

    2. Judy Ardine
    3. Add another to the list of those who are interested in individually owned ships between England and New Castle, Philadelphia, West Jersey in the 1680's. My ancestor, Robert EYRE, apprenticed under William ROGERS, a merchant of Bristol. William ROGERS was a Quaker and may have been a member of the Quaker Society of Free Traders. Robert EYRE was :30 Jan 1648 so was probably apprented to William ROGERS circa 1660. He probably would have completed his apprenticeship circa 1666-68. He was said to have made several sea voyages as a supercargo before settling in Bethel twp, Chester (now Delaware) county circa 1683 in which year he began serving as Clerk of the Chester County Court until 1690. We can find no record of Robert EYRE's arrival in this country and this might be an explanation. William ROGERS was also said to have had two brothers, I "think" their names were Francis and George ROGERS, who were referred to as "Irish traders". I'd also be interested in knowing if there is an on-line site regarding the Quaker Society of Free Traders and any ships they may have owned or were owned by members if anyone knows of such a site. Robert EYRE was said NOT to be a Quaker but several succeeding generations were, including his son, William EYRE, from whom all known EYRE's descending thru Robert EYRE come. Judy Ardine in Michigan

    2. Nadine Holder
    3. Yes, I too am interested in privately owned ships as I cannot find most of my ancestors on ships lists. However, there is another possibility - Baylin in his Westward Migrations book tells of the regulations imposed by England on early ship captains - for example, each adult had to be allowed a space at least 18 inches x 6 ft and a certain amount of provisions had to be supplied (and this was after things got better!). To get around the regulations the ships regularly pulled into bays, creeks, and byways of all kinds to pick up extra passengers who were then not listed on the ships manifest. These kinds of stops were regularly made along the coast of England and Scotland so no doubt took place in Ireland too. Judy - I find a reference to a deed dated 22 & 23 March 1681 where Francis Rogers and his brother George purchased 5000 acres of William Penn. An interesting concept that the Society of Free Traders might have owned ships - they were certainly more interested than anyone in bringing new settlers. 1. Re: [PACHESTE] Davis - Griffith - Phillips
    2. Dear Sam and Georgia, I'm afraid I can't add anything to the converstaion on the Phillips and the Davises. Samuel Owen's father Samuel came from Whiteland Twp., PA and settled in Lancaster County; he was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Owen. Thomas died in Whiteland in 1720, Elizabeth in Willistown in 1741. [Thomas and his wife and family came from Rhydwillam, Carmarthenshire (circumstantial), Wales to Whiteland Twp. in 1710\11. They were members of the Baptist Church in the Great Valley. Samuel died before his mother, in 1740. He was farming in Lancaster County (which may have become a part of Cumberland Co. -- I don't know a lot about the history of these two counties) but may have died in Maryland (indicated by his will abstract). Samuel and his wife Margaret (maiden name unknown) had Ezekiel, Hannah, Sarah, Owen, and Samuel. Their daughter Sarah married Owen Davis (is that right, Sam?). Samuel (I) had a son Ezekiel who left a will in Cumberland County which mentions Uncle Thomas (Samuel Owen's younger brother) and Thomas's son Eleazar. Samuel (I)'s brother Owen married Catherine _____. Her second husband was Evan Phillips. I have no idea if they had any children. Evan's first wife was Margaret Thomas, and they had Margaret, Ann, and John Phillips. I konw nothing about these children. If you want additional information on the Owen, let me know. The years I am looking for are 1840 & 1850. Leonard's parents were Thomas Roberts DeLong and Sarah Apler/Epler. I am desperately looking for info on Thomas's & Sarah's parents, who were they? 3. You're the person I've been trying to contact, Karen. I wanted to ask you about the Samuel OWENS, Owen DAVIS, Meshach JAMES. These are my people. I found THE HISTORY OF THE TONOLOWAY CHURCH. It mentions "TWO" Owen DAVISES. One is mine, Owen DAVIS who married to Hannah JAMES, dau of Meshach and Mary. The other was married to a Lititia PHILLIPS. Karen, bless you, can you tell me anything at all about these people? Do you know of a Griffith PHILLIPS and Catherine ROBERTS, or maybe a James DAVIS born abt 1761 who married Keziah PHILLIPS, a dau of Samuel PHILLIPS and Keziah ABRAHAM? They were of the Valley FORGE area in Pa. Well, actually, Samuel PHILLIPS was from Upper Merion, Montgomery Co., Pa. But, I/m especially looking for James DAVIS who was living with an uncle in the Valley Forge area when General Washington wintered his troops there. Any help at all is certainly appreciated, Karen.
