    2. There is a Newtown Township in each county - Bucks and Delaware. There are a number of duplicate names around here. You get in the habit of listing the county when you mention them. In a message dated 9/11/00 5:55:40 PM Eastern Daylight Time, rick@dca.net writes: << Wilma, Newtown Township is currently in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. However, in 1752, all of Delaware County was part of Chester County, Pennsylvania. 3. Has anyone found out more about William Davies' ships? [REF: Egle's Notes and Queries, Annual 1899, p144] WELSH SETTLERS Nathan Evans was born in the year 1682,in Treve Eghlis, Montgomeryshire, Wales. He came to this country with the Welsh emigration before the year 1700, and settled with his countrymen in the Welsh tract at Radnor, where in the year 1709 he married Susanna, d/o William and Ann (Miles) Davies. William Davies was a merchant in Philadelphia. He owned vessels, and likely lived at Radnor, where he had a plantation. The following agreement (the original of which is in the possession of the descendants of Nathan Evans) sets forth their occupations: "Merandum: "It is agreed by and Between Nathan Evans, of Edgment, in the County of Chester, in the Province of Pensilvania, Mill-right, of the one part, and William Davies, of the Township of Radnor, in the County and Province affors'd, Merch't, of the other part, as followeth (vis't): "Imprimis. "In Consideration whereof the s'd Nathan Evans is to pay or Cause to be paid unto the s'd William Davies the full and just sum of Tennpounds of Current Money of Pensilvania for every whole passinger that shall venture as affors'd, and five pounds Like money for every half passinger, which s'd sums are to be paid within the Space of fourteen days after the arrivall of the ship where s'd passingers shall be Transported, at Philadelphia or Chester, the one-half thereof in Current Silver or gold money of Pensilvania, and the other half in Contrey produce (viz't): Wheat, flour, or Biscets, at Current Market price when paid; and if any of the s'd passingers shall happen to Die after they are Shipped as affors'd, it is agreed that the s'd Nathan is to pay the same sum or sums, and in the same maner and times as if they had Lived to arrive at Pensilvania as affors'd; And also It is agreed by the parties affors'd that the s'd Nathan Evans is to pay and Discharge the s'd William Davies from all such Charges as he shall be att Concerning ye s'd passingers from the place of their abode until they are Shipped as affors'd in maner following, this is to say: For every shilling English Money that the s'd Wm. Davies shall pay in Great Britain the s'd Nathan is to pay two shillings Pensilvania money unto the s'd William (p145) Davies, along w'th the passage money affors'd; To all which s'd Coven't and agreem't either of ye parties bindeth themselves their heirs execut's and adm'trs firmly by these presents. In Witness whereof they have thereunto set their hands and sels, Interchangably. Dated the 25th day of October, Anno Dom., 1714. "NATHAN EVANS "Sealed and Delivered in the p'sence of us. "HUGH HUGHES "MIRICK DAVIES" Note: Nathan Evans m. Susanna Davies d/o William Hugh Hughes m. Mary Davies d/o William Mirick Davies was a s/o William Nathan Evans had a b/Roger Evans (p145) who appears to have settled in Nantmeal Twp., Chester Co., and who could have been one (or more) of the following: 1-Roger Evans with possible s/Richard and s/Jonathan in MD. (last evidence c1737 survey, in 1763 not listed in b/Nathan's will) 150A, survey by Taylor, January, 1737. [p145] 2-Roger Evans m. Margaret JARMAN of Uwchlan, d/o Jeremiah and Mary JARMAN (Mary Jarman moved to Philip Evans' home in Nantmeal.) (last evidence 1735 release of Jeremiah Jarman's land to John Jerman by Griffith and Sarah Evans, Roger and Margaret Jerman, Philip and Elizabeth Rogers, Jeremy and Mary Piersoll. 1731 Roger Evans m. Margaret GERMAN (John Casper Stoever Records) 3-Roger Evans m. Mary had d/Eleanor w/o Morgan Jones & d/Lettia w/o Thomas Morgan & "possible posthumous child" [Will:Jan. 1739, Prov:Feb. 1739, London Britain--FTM Cd #209 B:34] If the above will lists 2 married daughters, and the possibility of a posthumous child, it might mean that the marriage to Mary was a 2nd or 3rd marriage. Are the above 3 Roger Evanses, 2, or just one man who married 3 times? I was curious about the transportation of the Welsh by independent ship owners such as William Davies, when it was mentioned on the list. Now, I wonder if this transport by William Davies is one of the reasons I can't find my Evans families' arrivals. Investigating who surrounded William Davies seems to be providing me with additional clues and a different perspective. Any suggestions on how to proceed; is anyone else still interested in William Davies' independent shipping of Welsh ancestors? Kathy <kfdix@yahoo.com>

    3. We would like to invite you to return to The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses) at http://www.poorhousestory.com Today we posted the link and list of microfilmed poorhouse records from the website of the Pennsylvania State Archives. These include records from this county. For those who have not been to the site, DIRECTIONS: homepage/POORHOUSES BY STATE/OTHER States...then PENNSYLVANIA from the table of states. I do NOT have information about how to view or obtain these microfilms...but perhaps you can find that information on their website. Hope you enjoy our site! Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)
