I'm beginning to feel like a babysitter here, and that is NOT a good thing. So, just in case anyone here has forgotten, this list is for Chester County genealogy. Let's do a quick review: 1. If you are contemplating posting something that is not directly related to Chester County genealogy, please refrain from posting it. There are other lists for other areas and they are more appropriate for such postings. If the post is not of general interest but is merely in response to an individual on a more personal basis, please email that person privately rather than posting your response publicly. 2. Not every post will hold interest for each and every one of us, even if they are related directly to the purpose of the list. Delete keys are a wonderful device. And patience and tolerance are still virtues. If you have a problem with someone else's post, send your comments to me mhharris@pcbank.net ) rather than to the entire list. Onlist complaints about off-topic posts are no more on topic than the original offending post and generally create nothing but negativity. Why not lead by example instead and post something on-topic instead of a complaint, hmm? -Mary

I am so glad, that it is over with. We don't take any chances. And we always listen to weather advisories. I had a couple small tree branches blown off, and my lawn chairs, were in the next door nighbors yard. We still have wind, but it is pretty much over with now.It has been downgraded to a tropic storm, going 70 miles per hour. It should be over Levi County about now, (that is a few counties above us) and heading northeast. But anyway I am back on.Thank you for your concern. Bright Star

Hi All, I think it is safe to say that no one is in "grave" danger down here in west central Florida (aptly marketed as the Nature Coast).....for anyone who lives right on on the Gulf Coast, there are plenty of shelters available and all have been encouraged to evacuate and use them. Gordon was just downgraded to a Tropical storm, but is still sustaining 70 mph winds. They have closed bridges and causeways in the Tampa Bay area and we have been asked not to venture out unless absolutely necessary, but there is no legal prohibition for general driving. I am in SE Hernando County, about 40 miles north of Tampa...the eye is virtually parallel to us now. It is very breezy and we have been experiencing on-again, off-again rain, sometimes quite heavy, but not terrible, since last evening. The danger will be the ensuing storm surges, especially a bit north of here because the tides will be coming in about the same time Gordon approaches landfall. Ironically, SE Florida (down near Lake Okachobee) is being hit a bit harder than us here due to the "feeder" rainbands associated with the Storm. There have been tornado reports down that way. Technically, the entire Florida peninsula is under a tornado watch. Folks don't realize just how broad these systems are and how much havoc they can wreak even a couple of hundred miles form the storm center (I have explained this all-too-many times to new Floridians upon purchase of their first Florida Homeowners policy, because the premiums are huge! They'll say "I'm in Orlando and that's not coastal, so why is that premium so high?" I then explain about wind modelling and feeder bands, tornadoes, and trees and powerlines coming down everywhere....even a hundred miles or more from the coasts......) I also understand the Tropical Storm warning has been extended to the North Caroline/Virginia state lines...... Thanks for listening! BTW, in the interest of genealogy....anyone have any information on Chester Co ro Philadelphia BOWENS? Chester County Historical Society has material for cemeteries. Many cemeteries don't have records, and some that do are not indexed or otherwise recorded. If someone want;s a project, you can start with Greenmount in West Chester. They have records of who is burried where, but it is not indexed at all, only by date. It is time I try again to find information on my mysterious Gr.gr.gr grandfather Thomas Powell. I and searching for Thomas Powell, b. 07 Aug. 1793, died Chester Co. PA., 13 Aug, 1873. Married to Catherine Wright 16 Dec. 1816, at Old Swedes Church, Delaware. No earlier Powell listed at this Church. Thomas was drafted into War of 1812 from Black Horse, PA. County of Chester on 5 Sept. 1814, he served with Capt. Steele's 5th Bat'n. Thomas and Catherine had children, John Powell, b. 1821, d. 1868, Samuel Powell, b. 1823, Joseph Powell, b. 1825, Thomas W. Powell, b. 1828, Lewis Powell, b. 1830, d. 1897, William Powell, b. 1832, Jane C. Powell Rothrock, b. 1835, Allen Powell b. 1839. Samuel, Thomas W. and Allen Powell moved to Ohio. WHO is this Thomas Powell's parents and siblings? I have been searching for thirty years. Thomas, Catherine, William and Joseph buried "Ancient Burial Grounds and Original Site of St. John's Episcopal Church. On road to West Grove to New London." Thanks for any help. Mary A. I am hoping someone on this list can help me with more information about the painting which I mentioned in the last Newsletter for The POORHOUSE STORY website. Comments about the painting are quoted below: On the Wisconsin page you can find "Monroe County Almshouse and Insane Asylum, Sparta, Wisc." at http://www.poorhousestory.com/poorhouses_in_wisconsin.htm Go look at it now! Despite being larger than most, that layout is quite typical. I had not realized until I got more involved in this research that the mental hospital as a distinct institution quite literally grew out of the poorhouse physical plants. (The need to separate the insane from the rest of the poorhouse population was what gave rise to the development of special facilities and later specialized treatment for the mentally ill.) The starkness and isolation of these side-by-side institutions is very strongly evoked in this postcard image. But even when the setting was more rural and pastoral the emotion was the same. Andrew Wyeth painted a picture entitled Chester County Farm. . [Note: Prints of the painting are available at many sites on the internet. Just go to your favorite search engine and enter the title of the painting together with the artists name. But the best on-line image to which I can refer you is http://biggallery.com/art/byimg/A0DA4000.htm <http://biggallery.com/art/byimg/A0DA4000.htm> Please go look!] While I have not yet been able to get more information about the painting, it seems to be the portrayal of a solitary couple with very few belongings walking up a country lane to a poor farm.. The similarities between the two images illustrates the universality of the atmosphere of despair. Do any of you know if this was based on a real poorhouse in YOUR Chester County? I love the painting and would dearly like to know more about it. Thanks, Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)
To Malinda and Bright Star: Let's hope the very sincere apologies to the Aborigine people of Australia by the Government of Australia - and the lighting of the Olympic Flame ( cauldron) by Miss Freeman, an Aborigine - and 400 meter track champion, will have some further effect in our Country, and make our Government Officials feel shame for what THEY have NOT done along that same line. Perhaps we need to write to our individual elected Senators and Congressmen. A little joke I saw recently: "If pro is the opposite of "con" - then what about "promote" and "congress"??? Sen. My phone book for Chester Co. is 10 years old, so I hope the number hasn't changed since then. Fairview Cemetary Supt. Office 786 Oak St. Coatesville, Pa 19320 (610)-384-2027 Fairview Cemetary Association 2 & Chestnut Sts. Coatesville, PA 1932 (610)-384-6260 Hope this helps. Fairview sits above Oak St. on one of two hills above Coatesville. Good Luck! My paternal grandfather, Joseph Gibason, is buried there. Hi, Listers, I am researching my G-Grandfather, Francis J. Hollingsworth (emigrated England to Phila.) and G-Grandmother Louise (O'Rourke?) emigrated from Ireland (County Donegal?) to Phila. The couple married and raised a family in Coatesville, PA. Louise died in approx. 1934 and Francis died in 1971. They are buried in St. Cecilia's Cemetery, Coatesville (the other hill above C-ville), as is my father, Francis J. Gibason (died 1988). I live in Hummelstown (outside of Hershey), My husband & I moved here 10 yrs. ago. We formerly lived in West Chester & also in Downingtown. Greetings to all!
